That being said, yesterday I was charged about eight dollars for a 20 ounce quad iced breve. This morning, I ordered a 16 ounce quad iced breve it was told I'd be charged almost $12. Apparently, these guys charge three dollars for an extra double shot of espresso. The price justification being that the 20 ounce comes with a quad shot while the 16 ounce comes with a double shot. Their pricing is totally screwed up and I never get charged the same thing by any one employee. I even used their mobile order app for a while with the highest price subscription, which is supposed to include two free drinks a day. I still couldn't get a simple quad iced breve 16 ounce without being charged for extra shots. When I asked why, they explained people were taking advantage and ordering 12 shot drinks. I understand that abuse needs to be mitigated, but put a cap on the number of shots you can add instead of railroading customers operating in good faith. To tell people they get two free drinks per day and then charge them for doctoring up their drinks is false advertising. There's plenty of seating and a really cute area near the front of the shop. The area is spacious and doesn't feel crowded or cramped. COFFEE: I got their Honey Bloom Latte which is seasonal. Coffee comes through well, not too overwhelmingly sweet. The lavender is floral in the perfect amount with the honey bringing some sweetness to round out the latte. The women working were extremely welcoming and shared a great deal about the philosophy of Cariño's. Specifically the desire to create a space for sharing Mexican culture and building community. Being from the SGV in So Cal, it was comforting to see that aspect of my roots being shared here in the PNW. The Drinks: Dirty Horchata: I've been around the block, and this Dirty Horchata is no joke. One sip and I was literally shaking my head; ¡ay, guey, te la volaste! It's the perfect balance of home cooked flavor flavor and a solid caffeine punch. As a So Cal güero loco, I'm telling you, the Dirty Horchata is on point. I'll definitely be ordering this again. Habanero Mexican Mocha: I'll admit, I need to level set my spice expectations now that I live in the PNW. For me, there was only a hint of habanero. I would have enjoyed much more of that smoky, spicy kick. However, the chocolate they use is a massive step up from the "Abuelita" brand familiar from my youth. It was delicious, though next time I'll ask them to up the spice to a level reminiscent of an LA local. Overall, I love the philosophy, the space, and the general acogedora of the shop. It has been hard to find that authentic flavor this far north, but they killed it. As a So Cal güero loco, this place is officially on the map for me. There's comfortable, shaded outdoor seating and a sweet little balcony overlooking the Columbia channel. There's limited indoor seating, too. The interior is spotless and charming. The staff is friendly and rightfully proud of their cafe. They are open daily, 8 am to 3 pm. It's also dog friendly, at least for the patio. I just had a tea with honey to go--it was delicious. I'll be back for a London Fog and a longer stay, maybe even something to eat and see if I can bump up to five stars. I noticed they also offer bakery items from Portland's wonderful Gem, if you're seeking a gluten free treat. I'll definitely be back for more.
