Went here for some March Madness basketball on tv and some good food and drinks. Really wanted to try something new on the menu and brought a friend to check it out. The restaurant was running a "limited" menu for March Madness- which had 6 items from their regular menu. The place had less people than when we ate on a regular weeknight so I thought the smaller menu was not warranted. Our friend who was vegetarian was a bit taken back by the lack of options because of the limited menu. My wife ordered the burger again and I got the wings so we could split. The wings were ok, but they only gave you six. They didn't have any dessert options and I left hungry. Samantha was a great fun server, but once again I left this place wanting something better. When it comes to new bars, I'm usually attracted to them like a moth to a light. As if one couldn't tell from my reviews and check-ins, I am very much a fan of imbibing establishments. I ended up here as some friends that live in Roscoe Village wanted to check it out while my friend and I said, sure. I came here on a school night, but, shit happens. Immediately I liked how the bar was. Everything was in the right place and it felt like a place that you wanted to drink at. It also has a newer feel, but it isn't so modern that you feel like you're in some wannabe bar where you are just wanting to be seen. While I mostly focused on the cocktails during my trip, I did like what I saw from the tap list. It was a smaller list, but it was focused and got to the point with some excellent brews across the board. This was the perfect case of having something for everyone and not having some overly giant list for the sake of having a giant list. As far as my drinks go, they were very good. I mostly focused on negronis, but the small list had several classics while also having their own cocktails. Commonwealth is definitely on the return list for me. It's easy for me to get to and I liked the overall vibe. The next time I'm here I'll have to try some food as I was here later in the night and wasn't all too hungry. Given that they already had me at the word go, I'm sure I'll enjoy even more of what Commonwealth has to offer. read more

Great place to share a game with fellow Cowboyz fans. Food is good and atmosphere is better.

Decent food, great beer list...limited food options. So I've been here 2 times now. The first time was during the week they opened. The Owner was great, he stopped by our table to ask if we had any questions, suggestions, etc. I told him it would be very helpful to have the Gluten Free items on the food and drink menu's annotated. Fast forward a few weeks and boom, they are marked now! Love that. What they still need a little work on are the options. The options for sandwiches and entrees are quite limited but I think that's pretty common or a new establishment. They need to figure out the menu and what their patrons are looking for. My husband and I both ended up ordering a cheeseburger (mine was sans bun) and the burgers were cooked well and tasted great. We did bring our kids and they have a decent selection on their kids menu. It's not just fried bar food as many are nowadays. They even had a gluten free pasta dish for the kids. The establishment is well decorated and visually appealing inside. We're excited to have Commonwealth in the neighborhood and look forward to what they have to offer up in the future. Came here on a Tuesday night and had a pretty bad experience. My Shepherd's Pot Pie was extremely disappointing. Watery, weak-tasting gravy/vegetables with a tough (but decent tasting) crust. My wife's Prime Denver steak ($19) was even worse. A thin, fatty piece of meat. Requested medium, arrived well done. Service was also poor. Unfriendly and inattentive despite the small number of people in the restaurant. They were also out of 2 of the appetizers we were interested in. Even though its less than a block from our place, we probably won't be back. Sad, because we need more high-quality establishments in the area. read more

Brand-spanking-new place! Congratulations on getting this gem up and going! I am sure they are still working out the menu and I am looking forward to going back and checking it out again. I can't tell you how much I want this place to be a 5 star destination in our neighborhood, and I think it can deliver with some tweaking. Longman & Eagle chef plus Owen & Engine chef should = amazing. Staff is extremely friendly, even with the place being slammed. Best steak tartare I have had outside of Paris. It is REALLY hard for a chef to prepare this dish excellently, and I was very impressed--great job! I think the kitchen should toast all the accompanying crostino --it needs that crunch. Crab dip was a little watery and off on the seasoning. I would not order that again unless it gets an extreme make-over. Meatball sandwich was very good! You can tell these meatballs are house-made and with love. The bread was perfectly crunchy and not overwhelming. The marinara was delicious. I just had a bite of the shepherd's pie and I thought it had a great, gamey lamb flavor. The menu was very limited and I'm down with that. I heard there was going to be fried chicken on the menu, but it wasn't the night we went. I think it would be a great addition. I hope they are able to add a few more things to the mains and sandwiches portion of the menu as I think it would help. Flatbreads, too? Extensive beer list, de rigueur these days. I'm not a beer fan, but I found a couple that I liked. The Rita cocktail we had served was too heavy with the sriracha sauce and drowned out the other flavors. The cocktail list was wanting, and more options would be greatly appreciated (: I feel like Roscoe Village didn't need another sports bar, but if we must have another, Commonwealth is taking it to the next level with its farm-to-table execution. I hope that Commonwealth becomes a wild success and that more adventurous chefs/restauranteurs will change the dining scene here in Roscoe village. No more sports bars, though. Very unfortunate brunch. Got a table right away a little before 1- I was surprised because they were busy but didn't have a wait. We had one waitress take our order for and then bring drinks, then we sat around for 15 minutes or so before a new different waitress came to take our food order. She did so...then 40 min later came back to tell me a substitution I had asked for was not possible even though she had said it was possible. Fine, I understand special accommodations are not always an option. But...40 minutes...did you put our food order in earlier and the kitchen was that slow or did you not put our order in until 40 minutes after you took it? Either way...40 minutes is a long time to nurse a coffee without a refill or any further communication. Then, 20 minutes later still no food, the waitress came back again to let us know they were out of ham for the Benedict...they offered an alternate meat. Fine. Then maybe five or so minutes later the food finally came. Sad brunch. My eggs were cold. Not cool, not room temp...actually cold. The other person in my party had a salad that he liked. The fruit was had a weird vinaigrette flavor to it. The restaurant owner (per the waitress- we never saw or heard from him directly) comped our entire meal, which was a nice gesture, and the waitress was apologetic, but it was a bummer of a brunch and I definitely won't be going back with so many better options around like John's Place and Victory's Banner. Also, I think when things are going that badly for a meal, a little more communication and personality would have gone a long way. read more

Commonwealth totally kills it on atmosphere and decor. Lots of TVs and seating which would be great for groups. Could really hang out here for a while. I came on a Sunday because I really wanted a great burger and lots of reviews hyped Commonwealth's burger! Unfortunately I thought the burger was bland. It was a good size topped with bacon, tomatoes, cheese, and onions but just didn't pack a big punch. The fries however were really tasty so I actually stuffed some fries into the burger under the bun. I would come back and try something else because I want to like this place. Drinks looked great but a little pricey. $11 for a specialty cocktail so it better be good. Beer list was pretty long too. read more

Roscoe Village needed a new sports bar with decent food and a good beer list like this. This place had a chance to become my neighborhood sports bar (I live a few blocks away). Then they hung a Dallas Cowboys flag outside. Now I may never go back again. (Disclaimer: I'm a Philadelphia Eagles fan). I'll try to give an impartial review though: 4 stars for fun sports bar atmosphere 3 stars for food...it's okay, not great 3 stars for their uncomfortable seating and odd table arrangement 2 stars for their lack of decorations and creativity with the space (pretty sparse...hire a decorator, yo!) 0 stars for their affinity for the Dallas Cowboys Overall, not bad if you need a place to watch the game, but nothing special. We have been waiting for Commonwealth to open for awhile now, and today, headed to another local spot, we noticed them open for business, and decided to stop in. We sat at the bar: sharp looking wooden bar, and overall decor was cool. Although they have a decent beer selection, development is needed with their specialty cocktails. I chose the 'George Washington' which was a refreshing, tasty shaken cocktail...BUT not worth $11!! Bloody was quite tasty ($7 and worthy!)....however the $5 negro modelo side car my guy chose, seems pricey.... As for the food... Burger w/ house fries, and Benedict were delicious. Surprising that we weren't asked about the food ONCE as known first time patrons tho. Bartenders were 'nice,' but it was pretty nuts seeing to employees, including one of the cooks wearing her white apron, drinking at the end of the bar next to us...I heard an employee request a Bloody Mary with shrimp, which isn't even included in the house Mary!!! I have hard time thinking the owner/management would be keen on this, with the observed cook, finishing her beer, tossing the bottle in the trash and hollering "can I get another one!"??? Would we go again-yes, as the dinner menu looked appealing. But, I think we'll get a table next visit. read more

We had a blast this past Saturday at Commonwealth Tavern. Our large party of 12 was not a problem for the staff and we were seated right away. However, we did get there right after opening. This was certainly important for the few children we had who tend to be impatient. While the kids attempted to stay in the lines and off the tables with the crayons, we indulged in the awesome buffet style mimosa and bloody mary bar. You buy the drink and you build the drink to your liking. Whether that be with the aged beef jerky and sausage in the bloody mary or fresh fruit in the mimosa's - it's totally up to you. Very cool concept though and beautiful presentation - see posted photo. Atmosphere was an easy A++ and the food did not disappoint. I had the steak and eggs with arugula salad and it was quite delicious. Also, can we talk about the bacon? The bacon was friggin' awesome! You can easily sniff out the places that use plain Oscar Myer and this was not one of them. It was thick cut right off the farm fresh bacon. For me that makes a big difference and tends to dictate the rest of the quality of food. The rest of the table loved what they ordered - almost everyone had the steak and eggs, eggs benedict or breakfast burger. Anywho, if you are looking for a fun way to start a Saturday, Commonwealth was a great place that took the weeks stress's right away. My boss took us for a goodbye lunch because one of our team members was moving to California. It was FREEZING out and this place had the heat all the way turned up. I am always cold and this is the first bar/restaurant i been to where the heat was really nice and cozy! It was about 1pm so there wasn't anybody really in there. They have an extensive beer selection (i don't drink beer so i really didn't give a shit) and i didn't want to order a drink because i didn't want my boss to think "yes she got a problem". LOL so i stuck with water. I would have loved a DRINK LOL. Our server came right away and was talking way to fast for my liking and i didn't understand what the burger of the day was. I opted for the chicken sandwich, fries and a side of MAYO! Now they didn't have any regular mayo so i was i was a bit turned off with that fact. Also my boss wanted his sandwich a certain way but BECAUSE IT SOME TYPE OF SIGNATURE SANDWICH, WHOEVER PREPARES IT DOES NOT CHANGE IT FOR ANYBODY! i mean seriously, it was basically you order it the way it comes or you can order a different sandwich. BIG TURN OFF! Our sandwiches came out at a decent time. Everybody enjoyed theirs and i was so so impressed with my chicken sandwich. I was in love with this special mayo they have and the yummy home made fries. You get two stars for being the designated Dallas Cowboys bar. Otherwise, shame on you and your less than professional customer service. To associate yourself with my hometown is appalling. The saying, "don't mess with Texas" is true. Texans don't treat people in this manner. Arrived at 11 for a 3pm game and was told I couldn't sit at an open table because the table was reserved for the day but, "you can't make reservations." On what damn planet does that make sense? You can't reserve a table but someone reserved the table. A simple rephrasing to say "reservations are for brunch only" would be more than sufficient and understandable. When I brought this to the manager's attention his attitude was of unconcern and apathy as he informed us that the table I wanted was permanently reserved for their VIP guests. read more

Commonwealth has a great atmosphere and good drink selection. The reason I took a star away is after a few visits I decided to order desert. It was $9 for an ice cream sandwich. It was described to be extravagant and for that price large enough to share. It was disappointing to say the least. I can't believe it's taken me this long to review Commonwealth. I've been here at least 6-7 times. I live up the street and have a friend who lives right next to it, so we frequent Commonwealth for brunch. The breakfast burger is unmatched, I've had the schitnzel which was delicious, the CUBAN oh god the Cuban... the chilaquiles are magical. The service is great, the atmosphere is great, mimosas are $3 for brunch and they let you make your own - they pour you a glass of champagne then have a little bar set up where you go over and add your juice - OJ, cranberry, mango, etc and there's cut up fruit for you to add to your mimosa. My girlfriends and I came here for Sunday brunch and fell in love with this place. They have an amazing bottomless mimosa bar with any juice you could imagine... my favorite was the mango! They had the windows open which was perfect for the Chicago spring weather we are finally getting! I had the breakfast sandwich with bacon for brunch it was awesome, grilled onions were a plus. My girls loved the French toast. We ended up staying through dinner and watching the Bulls game. As you can see from my photo the Pork Chop was AMAZING!!! Went for brunch. That is now my preferred time to go here. Everyone was really happy with what they ordered. Be warned though, they do change the menu. I had brunch schnitzel which was delicious and came with the tastiest potatoes. My friends ordered the falafel frittata which is not authentic falafel but they really liked it. My other friend ordered the papusa, which was good but the schnitzel and frittata were our favorites. We have been back again and I learned this...Do not, I repeat, do not order the bacon. It is only 1slice cut into small pieces! And it barely has any flavor. Servers are really nice and helpful. They also do $12 bottomless mimosas which are good, they have different flavored juices, yay! read more

I came in skeptical - this is Chicago. There is no other football club but the Bears. As my first choice in Roscoe doesn't open until 5pm, I walked in for lunch at this "Cowboys bar" with my papa. First, the decor is great with its rough pine wall panels and complementary metal furniture. Second, country music is generally terrible and it should never be the first choice for dining. Third, Tom was the only person working at noon and he absolutely killed it. I'm holding onto the 5th start because food was whatever and forgettable. There are four sandwich options that are $7 before 5pm. I chose the Cubano and dad had the Abe. The pork shoulder on my Cubano was really dried out and tough. It went well with the Krakus ham on it though. Unlike most Cuban sandwiches, this one is different as it comes with Havarti cheese, bread and butter (sweet) pickles and onions. It seems to be baked instead of pressed, too. So definitely not a great Cuban sandwich, but I ate the whole thing so you figure it out. Dad had the Abe which is definitely not a burger. It's a bacon-flavored chopped meat sub. Overall, it had a nice flavor, and he too finished it. Both came with out of this world awesome fries. I want those fries with everything. There are daily daily specials - Tuesdays are $4 Blue Moons. I skipped it and ordered a Right Bee Cider, because THIS IS CHICAGO. Order local! read more

I have to give this place a big ol' "meh." I don't want to, but I have to. First off, this bar is right in my neighborhood. I was anticipating its opening for what seemed like 4 years. I went, I ate, I conquered. It was awesome. It was a full-on restaurant with a great beer list and drinks menu. I loved every bite, no matter how pricey or how long it look to come out of the kitchen. Then the bar took a turn. They decided to become more of a bar than a restaurant. They got rid of a bunch of menu items and replaced them with quicker, more bar-y foods. I wanted to cry. Not only is there less variety in the food, but there's no flavor. I've given feedback to the staff that the food is not as tasty as before. And hence, why I won't be frequenting it anymore. I will still stop in for a drink, however! This is actually a great spot to grab a pre-dinner moscow mule or a pre-bar craft brew. Their selection is still great and ever-changing with the seasons. The short of it: I go in for a drink, but not for dinner. Not even for an appetizer. I miss the old you, Commonwealth. I miss what we used to have :( read more

Every year my family has a big St Patrick's day party. This year we decided to host it at Commonwealth, and I can say we will be coming back for years to come. The owner and managers went out of their way to help us set up to the point they made a welcome banner for us. The wait staff was awesome. Not only were they very helpful, but had patience when it came to dealing with some of our "special" guests. Drinks were on point and so was the food. the food was good but the service is TERRIBLE. It seems like there are a million people working there but nothing is getting done, and what is done is the opposite of efficient. Our waitress came to us after 5 minutes when we ordered coffee to tell us there was no skim milk so we ordered 2%. The coffee came.. one cup at a time, and then ina different trip the milk and sugar. 3 other tables next to us ordered coffee or latte with skim and she took their orders to come back 5 mins later to say they are out of skim. How about applying what you already know from a table before? They bring plates out to table one at a time. And not even right after each other. And you see the cook come out, hand a dish to a random wait staff that it may or may not belong to, then figure out who is for then the next wait staff bring it to the table. I sat for almost 10 mins with my plate before my husband got his. Food was really good, but it seems to not have an identity and they really need to figure out their processes. I live down the street so I may go back for sheer convenience, but if it wasn't so close I would never return. read more

I like the wood-planked exterior and I've been excited to try this place. We stopped by recently for a weeknight dinner (during a Hawks game). Not surprisingly, the place was packed for the game and we were sat in the back dining area. The volume back there - from the TVs, from people talking, from everything combined - was exceptionally loud. There seemed to be some kind of an acoustic malfunction / echo chamber / nowhere for the sound to go - I can't explain it, but it was quite louder than it seems like it should have been. Food was pretty good, I ordered the turkey burger with fries. Burger patty was thick and well seasoned, juicy - yummy. Fries were on the thin side, which I'm not a big fan of, but they tasted good. I'd go back when a game is not on the TVs to see how the sound levels are in that back room. read more

This was one of the closest establishments to myself while staying in Chicago recently, so naturally I made it here a few times. I ate off of each menu (brunch/evening) and while both were good, I have to give the breakfast sandwich I had the nod. Brisket and bacon, egg... I'm forgetting a few ingredients but they are rendered unnecessary given the first three IMO. It also helped that it was Saturday so I had the Irish game day specials for drinks. Stopped in here for brunch with a friend. It was 10am, sign said it was open until 11, but the door was open. We walked in, they were open, just hadn't updated the sign. Did the bloody mary bar, which was a good deal. Breakfast was fantastic. My friend tried to order shrimp and grits, which was on the menu, but no longer was served by the restaurant. Came here during Retro on Roscoe for some drinks and wanted to get a snack to tide us over from lunch until dinner. But... absolutely nothing on the menu appealed to any of us. You know how sometimes menus are written with your exact preferences in mind? This place wasn't that x3. We did have drinks which became a few drinks which became quite a few drinks. The beer list was great but they didn't have three of the wines I tried to order and I'm still not sure what I actually ended up getting. I went there with a group of friends a couple of weeks ago for brunch. Although service was slow (we had been warned that a large group had just ordered) we had a great time! What made time fly by was the great mimosa bar! Unlimited mimosas and you get to pick what flavor you want with each refill... Mango, strawberry kiwi... I tried 6 of them and loved them all! Best Cowboys bar ever! I was flying to Chicago on business Sunday morning and I was looking for a place to go watch the game. I found this place on Facebook and the photos of Cowboys fans and the $4 tecates looked good. I caught a cab right from the airport and went directly there. They had a huge raffle at halftime and gave away shirts hats beer beer stuff and the owner is hilarious. Locals were very welcoming too. All in all great place to watch a cowboys game on a Sunday. Food was serviceable with great ingredients but a bit ambitious for a bar. read more

I really like Commonwealth. It's a solid choice for good food and drinks. My favorite thing on their menu is their burger and their fries. Those fries are perfectly fried. Each individual fry is crispy and they also use both salt and pepper to season. Their queso fundido is a close second. As for the booze, they have a crazy extensive beer list and some fun cocktails. Their margarita on the cocktail list has some serious spice and their Moscow Mules are pretty tasty as well. read more
