This coffee shop is cute and kid friendly. They even have a small box of toys for the littles. My son loves it, especially because Potato Head is in there. The coffee is good. Always hot. They have a small menu but good coffee doesn't need to go big or have extremely weird drinks. They also have a small cooler with juice and pop. If you're in the Mexican War Streets this place is a nice stop. read more

I love the vibe of this place which begins before you even enter the shop. Its located in the Mexican War Streets, right in the middle of residential homes, giving you this feeling that's hard to describe..something I've only seen in movies. Friends sitting outside chatting over coffee, people walking their dogs--just a true neighborhood feel. There are large windows that carry in sunlight, giving life to the whole place. This is such an awesome part of such a cool, hidden neighborhood! My first experience with commonplace was actually in Indiana, PA & since living in Pittsburgh I've been dying to try there other locations. On a beautiful, early spring day, it's the perfect place to enjoy a wonderful cup of caffeine! Most of the walls are windows, so when the sun shines in, it radiates. Such a cool atmosphere and a great place to bring your laptop and get stuff done! Their coffee is excellent and the latte art is top notch (if you're into that, which I totally am.) there is outdoor seating which is I'm sure a hot commodity during the warmer months, but they give awesome views of the Mexican war street! read more

Big fan of Commonplace Coffee in general. I proclaim it now, best pour overs in the city, by far... And I'm not even a big coffee drinker! You know what else makes this place great in my eyes? They make their own chai mix. I'm a chai snob, and hate when local shops just end up buying Oregon Chai concentrate (it's gross). See, I told you I was particular! They're also now making their own pastries too! I tried the scone, which was good, although a little dry. I believe scones are usually made that way, but I prefer a cake like scone (probably not the traditional scone recipe!). I also tried the coffee cake, which was very good, and probably would be my go to choice. Can't beat this neighborhood too, it's so beautiful. Loved this cute place - randomly got in there as it was pouring outside but the space is very quiet, lay-back and trendy. I ordered the chrysanthemum tea which is comforting, warm, and good for my stomach. My friend had white tea. Will definitely come back as this is located in my favorite area of Pittsburgh. read more

Stopped in for a hot coffee before heading over to the Mattress Factory. We got 2 large "ready to go" filtered Papua New Guinea coffees. They were hot, strong, flavorful, and did the trick. It ended up being $4.50 for two large (12oz) coffees - I do wish it was a 16oz, but I was still satisfied. Located on a corner in the Mexican War Streets, there is free parking around. The coffee shop is small, but has a decent amount of shared and separate seating, as well as some minimal outdoor seating. There is so much natural lighting, which I absolutely loved! read more

Commonplace is one of my local favorites in North Side! I've been to multiple locations and this is in my top favorites. I've met the owner and he is awesome! TJ makes everyone feel at home at Commonplace and the prices are so affordable. Anyone I'm with from out of town/area I take to get coffee or tea here. No one is ever disappointed with their experience. It's good coffee done right! I usually just order whatever is already brewed. I usually ask the baristas what to order and they always give good advice. I come and get coffee sometimes once a week (not daily) and the baristas typically remember me. It's nice that they keep up with the neighborhood regulars and not so regulars. There is food and donuts along with other drinks in the cooler along side the bar. All I know is if you live in Pittsburgh and you have not enjoyed their coffee you're missing out! read more

I had a regular coffee from this place and I wasn't very impressed. In fact I got very sick after I had a cookie and coffee here. I am not sure if it was the milk in the coffee, or just the cookie. The cup looked very dirty after I inspected it. The cookie felt pretty hard like it was left out for some time. This tiny coffee shop is very boring on the inside and has the feel of going to someones run down apartment to go grab a coffee. They keep the cookies in the typical plastic wrap that I have seen at many very ordinary coffee places around town. Yes, the name really fits this place perfectly. This place is terrific. Simple setup and super clean with pricey but high quality brewed coffee plus friendly staff. It's like a random gem in the middle of the Mexican War Streets, away from the major corridors and part of the local neighborhood. It's popular with the locals too. The staff seem to know the regulars well, and almost everyone who came in was so chill and friendly. If I lived in PGH I'd totally come here all the time. If I ever move here this place alone is heavy incentive to find a place in the Mexican War Streets. read more

TJ Fairchild and Randy Gilson. Those guys are the two responsible for the revitalization of the North Side. For me, at least. Previously, my main pull to the North Side was Randyland. But what was I expected to do, stand there and listen to one of his massive stories withOUT a cup of coffee in my hand? Now TJ all fixed that. The new Commonplace is not even a five minute walk down from Randyland. The barista told me a bit about how it came to be that Commonplace opened shop in this location. Apparently it had always been some sweet little girl's dream (gotta make it sound protagonistic, ya know) that a coffee shop would go into this building and Commonplace went ahead and fulfilled that dream. And look, it wasn't just another Crazy Mocha or Starbucks. If you wanted better, then you're a thankless ruffian. The space is simple and beautiful. It's a very relaxed but inspired vibe consisting of white walls and natural lighting along with some rugged wood pieces here and there. The coffee obviously is roasted by Commonplace, which has been a bit too roasty tasting for me lately and as my Guatemalan pour-over confirmed. But hey, it's still good coffee and I love what Commonplace has done for Pittsburgh. And if I can give the Commonplace in Squirrel Hill five stars then this one definitely deserves it too. I would even say it's my favorite of the three locations in Pittsburgh and that I'd go to this shop quite often if I had half a chance. read more

First of all, I saw no wars happening in the street and as a matter of fact, no Mexicans come to think about it. Outside of the misleading advertisement, the coffee was fucking boss!!! The people inside smiled at me and this made me feel great! The barista chatted with me and spoke in casual tones about the north hills. Commonplace in the North Side is finally open, as a North side resident I'm so happy to finally have some good coffee nearby. I stopped in on the 3rd day they were open and grabbed a latte to go and really enjoyed my drink. The inside is a bit smaller but it is a great place to drop in and grab a coffee with a friend and chat with the friendly baristas. You can grab a great cup of coffee for $2 and under or an espresso for around $3. They also have chemex pourovers. If Joe isn't your thing, they have a variety of teas to choose from. I strongly dislike commonplace's coffee. It is so bland. They brew it so weak. And it tastes like municipal water supply. So when I asked for a little cream to add to it, the barista gave me a dirty look, sighed and rolled her eyes and just looked at me for a second. You'd have thought that I asked her to go out back and milk a cow for me. Funny thing is, I've been to other coffee shops that brew commonplace roasted beans. And I like their coffee.
