A lovely corner-store coffee shop with an artsy vibe. This is the kind of coffeeshop I wish I could walk to from my house, or even had in my town. My wife and I stopped here on our way to the Any Warhol Museum and had seen this place recommended as being a great little coffeeshop to stop in. It's not a large place, but it's got a very cool vibe. It occupied by a very artsy crowd of regulars (people on laptops, guys with vintage film cameras hanging around and looking cool - that kind of crowd) . The kind of place that makes you wish you had a screenplay to finish out in the open on a laptop just so you could drink coffee all day and chat it up with cool people. My wife and I both got lattes. I got a honey latte and she got a vanilla latte. Both tasted excellent and were priced accordingly for a place like this and came in environmentally friendly cups. We were in and out pretty quick and this was in the morning so there were a couple people in line but things moved very quickly. The staff was very nice and friendly, which sometimes you honestly don't get at little coffee places like this. There's an assumed dismissiveness with a place that serves very good coffee. There's ample street parking in this part of Pittsburg and you just kind of part wherever. It was very easy to get in and out of here. I'm super into this type of coffeeshop and I always like seeing what things they do differently than the little coffeeshops in my area or the big brands like Starbucks. There's just something so charming and unique about the vibe a place like this creates in the community. I'd easily come here a gain. Highly recommended if you're passing through Pittsburgh or a local. read more

This is a real jewel. Everything from the Covid protections to the pick-up window and all interactions along the way were perfect. read more

Commonplace Coffee - Bill & Barbara - Coffee Roasteries Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

This coffee shop is cute and kid friendly. They even have a small box of toys for the littles. My son loves it, especially because Potato Head is in there. The coffee is good. Always hot. They have a small menu but good coffee doesn't need to go big or have extremely weird drinks. They also have a small cooler with juice and pop. If you're in the Mexican War Streets this place is a nice stop. read more

These guys are the greatest. Great coffee and pastries. If you are in the war streets stop by. Even if you aren't, it's worth the drive.

I really enjoy this neighborhood coffee shop. Prices are reasonable and coffee is good. They stay open longer than others during Covid so that afternoon coffee pick-me-up is clutch read more

This coffee shop is super cozy and in such a cute area. It's small on the inside but don't let that deter you. I had the lavender latte and blueberry muffin. This was by far the best latte I've ever had. Not to mention the presentation. The blueberry muffin was pretty good too! Bonus: the staff is friendly too! read more

love this place. great little neighborhood coffee shop with rotating art. they make beautiful lattes and are always friendly

Same great coffee as at the Squirrel Hill location but with a cozier, neighborhood vibe. Small selection of baked goods, good WiFi if you're there to work, and prompt service. read more

This coffeeshop has a great vibe! Located on a sunny corner with street parking, the space is beautiful. We saw a lot of people with laptops, clearly regulars. I got an oat milk latte, which was cool- I've never been anyplace that offers oat milk. The wood everywhere, and the logo/branding was on point. nice place for a caffeine fix. read more

There aren't enough nice things I can say about this place. The vibe is amazing, the staff is knowledgeable, kind, and accommodating of any weird request I could throw at them. Commonplace is like the corner coffee shop that everyone dreams of having when they move into a new neighborhood. If you're in the North Shore definitely check this place out - you won't be disappointed! read more

I love the vibe of this place which begins before you even enter the shop. Its located in the Mexican War Streets, right in the middle of residential homes, giving you this feeling that's hard to describe..something I've only seen in movies. Friends sitting outside chatting over coffee, people walking their dogs--just a true neighborhood feel. There are large windows that carry in sunlight, giving life to the whole place. Although limited, there are tables of all kinds to sit at. And most importantly, the coffee is excellent! read more

This is such an awesome part of such a cool, hidden neighborhood! My first experience with commonplace was actually in Indiana, PA & since living in Pittsburgh I've been dying to try there other locations. On a beautiful, early spring day, it's the perfect place to enjoy a wonderful cup of caffeine! Most of the walls are windows, so when the sun shines in, it radiates. Such a cool atmosphere and a great place to bring your laptop and get stuff done! Their coffee is excellent and the latte art is top notch (if you're into that, which I totally am.) there is outdoor seating which is I'm sure a hot commodity during the warmer months, but they give awesome views of the Mexican war street! read more

Big fan of Commonplace Coffee in general. I proclaim it now, best pour overs in the city, by far... And I'm not even a big coffee drinker! You know what else makes this place great in my eyes? They make their own chai mix. I'm a chai snob, and hate when local shops just end up buying Oregon Chai concentrate (it's gross). See, I told you I was particular! They're also now making their own pastries too! I tried the scone, which was good, although a little dry. I believe scones are usually made that way, but I prefer a cake like scone (probably not the traditional scone recipe!). I also tried the coffee cake, which was very good, and probably would be my go to choice. Can't beat this neighborhood too, it's so beautiful. You should absolutely make this your North Side coffee shop. read more

Loved this cute place - randomly got in there as it was pouring outside but the space is very quiet, lay-back and trendy. I ordered the chrysanthemum tea which is comforting, warm, and good for my stomach. My friend had white tea. Will definitely come back as this is located in my favorite area of Pittsburgh. read more

Stopped in for a hot coffee before heading over to the Mattress Factory. We got 2 large "ready to go" filtered Papua New Guinea coffees. They were hot, strong, flavorful, and did the trick. It ended up being $4.50 for two large (12oz) coffees - I do wish it was a 16oz, but I was still satisfied. Located on a corner in the Mexican War Streets, there is free parking around. The coffee shop is small, but has a decent amount of shared and separate seating, as well as some minimal outdoor seating. There is so much natural lighting, which I absolutely loved! read more

Love this place! Family of 5 visiting from out of town and looking for a quick place to grab a snack while waiting for a museum down the street to open. We had some breakfast sandwiches that were perfect and awesome. The person working there gave us pirates tickets for a game that afternoon. We ended up having an awesome day thanks to this coffee shop. Thanks Commonplace coffee! Cool vibe, good food, and nice people. read more

TJ Fairchild and Randy Gilson. Those guys are the two responsible for the revitalization of the North Side. For me, at least. Previously, my main pull to the North Side was Randyland. But what was I expected to do, stand there and listen to one of his massive stories withOUT a cup of coffee in my hand? Now TJ all fixed that. The new Commonplace is not even a five minute walk down from Randyland. The barista told me a bit about how it came to be that Commonplace opened shop in this location. Apparently it had always been some sweet little girl's dream (gotta make it sound protagonistic, ya know) that a coffee shop would go into this building and Commonplace went ahead and fulfilled that dream. And look, it wasn't just another Crazy Mocha or Starbucks. If you wanted better, then you're a thankless ruffian. The space is simple and beautiful. It's a very relaxed but inspired vibe consisting of white walls and natural lighting along with some rugged wood pieces here and there. The coffee obviously is roasted by Commonplace, which has been a bit too roasty tasting for me lately and as my Guatemalan pour-over confirmed. But hey, it's still good coffee and I love what Commonplace has done for Pittsburgh. And if I can give the Commonplace in Squirrel Hill five stars then this one definitely deserves it too. I would even say it's my favorite of the three locations in Pittsburgh and that I'd go to this shop quite often if I had half a chance. read more

This place is terrific. Simple setup and super clean with pricey but high quality brewed coffee plus friendly staff. It's like a random gem in the middle of the Mexican War Streets, away from the major corridors and part of the local neighborhood. It's popular with the locals too. The staff seem to know the regulars well, and almost everyone who came in was so chill and friendly. If I lived in PGH I'd totally come here all the time. If I ever move here this place alone is heavy incentive to find a place in the Mexican War Streets. read more

Commonplace is one of my local favorites in North Side! I've been to multiple locations and this is in my top favorites. I've met the owner and he is awesome! TJ makes everyone feel at home at Commonplace and the prices are so affordable. Anyone I'm with from out of town/area I take to get coffee or tea here. No one is ever disappointed with their experience. It's good coffee done right! I usually just order whatever is already brewed. I usually ask the baristas what to order and they always give good advice. I come and get coffee sometimes once a week (not daily) and the baristas typically remember me. It's nice that they keep up with the neighborhood regulars and not so regulars. There is food and donuts along with other drinks in the cooler along side the bar. All I know is if you live in Pittsburgh and you have not enjoyed their coffee you're missing out! read more

Great coffee, great space, quiet, chill, and great neighborhood. Just get there early enough for a seat!!

I had a regular coffee from this place and I wasn't very impressed. In fact I got very sick after I had a cookie and coffee here. I am not sure if it was the milk in the coffee, or just the cookie. The cup looked very dirty after I inspected it. The cookie felt pretty hard like it was left out for some time. This tiny coffee shop is very boring on the inside and has the feel of going to someones run down apartment to go grab a coffee. They keep the cookies in the typical plastic wrap that I have seen at many very ordinary coffee places around town. Yes, the name really fits this place perfectly. It is horribly commonplace and boring. The coffee is not very good and the food sucks. Don't go and I will not be back ever. read more

Fantastic cup of coffee. Rivals some of the best Coffee Houses I've been to in my hometown of San Francisco, and we take coffee very seriously. Service was awesome. If you're into high quality coffee that tastes like coffee, this is your place. If you like sweet, sugar filled drinks, try another coffee shop. The menu here is limited, but they'll make most anything you request. They offer a small selection of syrups, one of which is lavender, to die for! They also offer baked gods, but I've never tried them. The decor and artwork are simple to compliment their vibe, also with limited seating. Best place on the north side to get coffee. read more

First of all, I saw no wars happening in the street and as a matter of fact, no Mexicans come to think about it. Outside of the misleading advertisement, the coffee was fucking boss!!! The people inside smiled at me and this made me feel great! The barista chatted with me and spoke in casual tones about the north hills. It felt good to undo my flac vest and just sit back and enjoy my latte. It did, it really did. When I left the house that morning, I wasn't sure if I'd make it back alive, I was ready to met my maker but nothing happened. I went and drank coffee and came home and kissed the wife and kids and as they hugged me, group hug style, I looked up into the sky and mouthed the words, thank you. read more

Commonplace is a solid, neighborhood feeling coffee joint. Good Cappuccinos without exception.

Commonplace in the North Side is finally open, as a North side resident I'm so happy to finally have some good coffee nearby. I stopped in on the 3rd day they were open and grabbed a latte to go and really enjoyed my drink. The inside is a bit smaller but it is a great place to drop in and grab a coffee with a friend and chat with the friendly baristas. You can grab a great cup of coffee for $2 and under or an espresso for around $3. They also have chemex pourovers. If Joe isn't your thing, they have a variety of teas to choose from. I'll be back! read more

Great coffee, cute atmosphere. Walkable in the neighborhood. Breakfast burrito was good and cheap ($6)

Slow paced. Good cold brew. Good aesthetic. Only one choice for espresso but it's not bad.

Awesome coffee, really great space! Would love to live closer in MWS, would be there every day.

So happy to have such great coffee in the War Streets! This cozy, light filled space has quickly become one of my favorite neighborhood spots. Frank makes beautiful, tasty, precise coffee drinks. They stock my favorite donuts from Gluten Free Goat Bakery. There are only 5 tables in here, but the vibe is so welcoming that strangers often sit together. I love that I can come in with my laptop and do some work while also enjoying a great cup of coffee and a lovely neighborhood space. read more

One of several locations in Pittsburgh, but I personally like this one the best because of the large tables and good lighting! They have yummy grilled cheeses and I've heard their quiches are delicious! It's right around the corner from Mattress Factory and Randyland so if there's no space then it's a great area to walk around! When the weather is nice, there's also a nice garden/park across the street where you can take your coffee and sit. read more

Tasty coffee in a clean modern looking cafe. I had the chai latte and it was flavorful and warm on a cold winter day!

Big fan of Commonplace, they make excellent coffee and I buy their heartmender espresso all the time for home use. I was disappointed that this location in the Mexican War Streets is not handicap / wheelchair accessible. That's a deal breaker for me anyway, and something folks with physical issues should know about. So plan accordingly. (Its weird there's not a check box for this attribute on the page? Or am I missing something?) read more

Amazing local coffee shop brewing up tasty espresso drinks and more. I don't do dairy so I appreciated that they had oat milk. My mother and I ordered the vanilla/lavender latte and it was magnificent. The art and decor made this a cozy place for a snowy Sunday afternoon. If you're not looking to sit inside, take your coffee to go and look at the amazing architecture on the surrounding streets read more

Do you like watered down coffee? What if it's served with some attitude? Do you like it cream in your coffee? Yes? Great! Then you'll love the extra attitude that you'll get with it! I strongly dislike commonplace's coffee. It is so bland. They brew it so weak. And it tastes like municipal water supply. So when I asked for a little cream to add to it, the barista gave me a dirty look, sighed and rolled her eyes and just looked at me for a second. You'd have thought that I asked her to go out back and milk a cow for me. Funny thing is, I've been to other coffee shops that brew commonplace roasted beans. And I like their coffee. But when they brew their own coffee I hate it. read more
