The Stargazer was a bit plain without vanilla, but after adding a tiny bit of simple syrup from a side they gave me, it tasted much better. The Fixer Upper was good, though it had a sweet aftertaste, but I really liked it. Lady is Always Right was really good again--definitely spicy. The Sage Pear Gimlet was too sweet by the end. The mussels were too salty and fishy, though the bread that came with it was great. The beet and ricotta was fresh, but I feel it should've come with crackers. The Brussels sprouts and cauliflower were really good. The crab pasta had a fishy taste, and the salmon was covered in too much salt, but it tasted better once I took the skin off. read more

Time to update my review. The inside of the restaurant is very modern but still cozy. I didn't catch our servers name but he went above and beyond and provided amazing service. I ordered the meatloaf with no mashed potatoes and it was the best meatloaf I've had at a restaurant. The glaze on top was the perfect balance of sweet and savory. The carrots were cooked perfectly. We were staying at Ventana Canyon Resort and wanted to experience something near by for dinner. After looking at options near by, this seemed like an obvious choice. Made a reservation on Open Table for 6:30pm on a Sunday night and there was hardly anyone there when we arrived. Reservations were not needed. The host was friendly and seated us right away. Our server was Alex and he was extremely polite and attentive. He gave great recommendations and guided us to our choices. I started with a glass of wine, the Carmel Road Cabernet Sauvignon that had a decent rating of 3.7 out of 5 on the Vivino app which didn't disappoint. We chose to not have an appetizer and ordered our entrees. I had the orchiette crab pasta which was delicious. He had the meatloaf that came with mashed potatoes and carrots, which he thoroughly enjoyed although it was more than he wanted to eat, he definitely recommendeds. We finished off our meal with the olive oil cake dessert. When he initially mentioned the two options I wasn't particularly swayed either way, but he wanted a piece of cake and when I tell you I was surprised at how moist and delicious it was. During our time here the restaurant filled up with other patrons, but it was never uncomfortable. He did mention that he agreed with other reviewers as far as the noise level and the acoustics, I didn't even notice. Overall, it was a great experience with exceptional service. Came here for a special occasion and, unfortunately, the best I can give it is ok. We ordered several appetizers and while they were all very good, they were very small even for appetizer size (each one barely served 2 people). I ordered the salmon and the server asked if serving it medium was ok. I asked him to make it medium well and he said no problem. Unfortunately, it ended up be served medium rare and no one at my table wanted it. I brought it home and will just cook it through myself and serve it on a salad for lunch tomorrow, but either the server put it in wrong or the kitchen doesn't know the difference between medium rare and medium well! Others at the table said their food was good, but no one seemed to be raving about it as they often do when we dine out. I think they were just trying to be kind and likely found it ok as well. At first I thought the prices seemed very reasonable, but when the plates came out, I realized they are about half the portion size of many other places and that's why the prices were what they were. So, unfortunately, it ultimately seemed overpriced for what you got. When the food was ready, the server brought the first 3 plates out and then it was at least 7-10 minutes before the other people at the table were served their dinners, so the first people to be served ended up with cold food. The server never came back to ask how everything was and we had to ask him to refill the water carafes and to bring the check. Only 2 desert options and neither seemed that exciting, so we skipped it. It's a beautiful restaurant; it just didn't live up to what I was hoping it would be! We used to live right down the street so it was a frequent spot for us but now living in OV we don't get to go as often but still make an effort to grab a bite here. Happy hour is a great time to go and try out some small plates. We love to sit at the bar. There's a few TVs to catch the games. Overall love the space and decor of the restaurant. Service is always great and the food and drinks are really good. Our favorite appetizer is the Thai curry mussels; we ask for the broth to go and eat it with rice the next day. They have a great selection of wine and cocktails. We started with a bottle of wine and the wildflower sourdough & honey cinnamon butter yum . They were both very fresh, but we preferred the taste of the Kale Caesar Salad. As for entrees, I had the salmon filet, beluga lentil, root veggie and virgin sauce. They brought my husband's order and apologized that my order had not been cooked yet. Somehow, the cook overlooked it. I watched my husband eat for 15+ minutes only to have another server (where was the manager??!!) tell me that the dinner was still not cooked, perhaps I would like something else with a short turnaround?? We spent 1.5. hours, most of it spent with my waiting to eat something. I was so hungry I was sick to my stomach. No apology, no comp, no gift card for the next time. Commoner was our first proper dinner outside of the resort we were staying at and it was kind of a "meh" experience. Upon arrival, the restaurant seemed pretty all right - it was nestled in a strip mall, but looked pretty decently attended and well, rather loud - I think there were a couple of rambunctious celebratory groups in attendance that night. We sat at the bar, after the hostess couldn't find our reservation, which was fine - it was likely our fault the reservation somehow didn't get booked. The service was quite good - the bartender kept our drinks filled and regularly checked on us. We ordered the roasted Brussels sprouts with the cheese on the side and while the flavor was decent, holy smokes it was like consuming a salt lick. We also tried a beet salad selection and that was thankfully far more palatable. I ordered the vegan entree and it was a lot of black beans and veggies piled onto of a bland-tasting liquid. I mean, it wasn't inedible, but it was very underwhelming. Like I just shoveled it into my mouth for sustenance. I think my dining companion felt similarly about her entree - it was just okay. It is a generous serving and we ended up asking for more bread to dip. The beef bolognese was flavorful and just melted in your mouth. The meat for all of the entrees were dry yet the fries were soggy and greasy. All plates were bland. We were charged for club soda that had a bad tap water taste and never got refills. Also surprised to see they didn't have a dessert menu when they're branded as an upscale option. Ambiance was neat on the bar side. There are pretty views from the dining room but but inconsistent ambiance, felt a little like sitting in someone's formal dining room that isn't ever used. This was my first-time visiting Commoner & Co. and the experience could have been better. The food is okay, but the ambience and customer service are lacking. The main dinner tables are placed along an uncomfortable wooden bench. It seemed like the bar area with the high-top tables probably had better seating. Now for customer service. When we were first seated, we had three different employees stop by the table to tell us they would grab us some water. It took at least 10 minutes before one of them finally returned with any water. When our meals were finally delivered, I had asked the waiter for parmesan cheese to sprinkle on the pasta. He said he would be right back with that and just never came back until it was time to bring us the bill. The restaurant was not super busy but did seem to have some sort of special event booked for the party room, so I do not know if that threw off their customer service or what. We stayed in the Catalina Foothills for a week and dined here twice during our stay because the food and service was terrific. Our first visit was on Tuesday evening, which is their fried chicken night. We made an early-ish reservation (6:30) to get there before it sold out. It's that good. So is the biscuit- it was among the best I've had. The brussels sprouts were also excellent - crunchy and tangy. The only item we loved less was the vodka poached prawns. The server had described the dish and told us the shrimp were not served whole, but rather more like a more uniform cerviche. We decided to order it anyway. It was fine once but I wouldn't order it again. Cocktails had some interesting combinations. Our server asked a few questions and help us select ones we'd like, as some of them are were on the sweeter side and not what we were looking for. We returned on Christmas eve land tried their goat cheese tart (yummy - on the lighter side with a fruit preserve on the side), another plate of the brussels, a Caesar salad, and shared the beef and pork meatloaf, which was served with carrots, mash, gravy and onions. The mussels were served in a rich and creamy thai curry with a hefty side of fries. Odd combo, but it worked well. I fell in love with the maple vinaigrette that accompanied the commoner salad; it was really refreshing. Unfortunately, I didn't totally love the entrees. The shrimp scampi fell flat for me; it tasted a little bland. The braised beef had a fun kick to it, but nothing to write home about. It's been awhile since we'd been to Commoner, so we decided to give it another try. We were excited to see an expanded patio / deck area and asked to be seated there. It was a bit chilly, and a friendly staff member got the patio heater next to us going after two requests. We started with the Local Libation, a smooth blend of gin, vanilla, cranberry, orange, lemon, and anise. Lovely to sip. We were pleased to find the goat cheese tart still on the menu and even more pleased to find it just as tasty as we remembered. For the entrée, I selected the togarashi crusted salmon that came with forbidden rice, bok choy, charred scallion crema, and honey. The togarashi had a pleasant heat that was balanced by the crema and honey. My partner selected the cioppino with tagliatelle, shrimp, mussels, and salmon. There was an ample amount of fish and the sauce was light and not too salty. We shared a pumpkin chocolate tart for dessert; small, but just the right amount after a filling meal. It's great that they offer maple glazed tempeh on the menu for the vegans; it would be awesome if they offered one more option. My dinner partners enjoyed the shrimp cocktail but paying for bread and butter ? Really? As an appetizer ? Since when. ? The pasta was undercooked and my friends did not finish. My salmon was ok but the lentils were a distasteful distraction. Why lentils? It would have been better without them. The root vegetables were 7 pieces of carrot. ??? This was the most unique cocktail I have ever had- the flavors went perfect together. Sweet, sour and a hint of herbs. I was not a fan of the Mushroom and Marrow and I love marrow. There was very little in the bone- the waitress even brought out a second since the chef agreed it was a shallow marrow. I was bummed about that. But the salmon was great! I have finally come here twice so I can leave a review. The first time I came here I tried the braised beef dish with cheese polenta and it was great. I just recently went again with my daughter and we went right at opening at four and they have a pretty nice little happy hour menu that is from 4 to 6. There was a fried chicken sandwich on it and that's what I got it was delicious and completely worth the price. My daughter got the shrimp scampi pasta dish and it was fabulous. The drink deals looked good, but was there just for the food. The service was great, the table was wobbly and they fixed that quick. Never had to wait for anything. The prices range from really reasonable to what may be expected for the type of dish. First we got the artichoke dip which was on happy hour prices. It was fantastic, just the right gooey and cheesy to satisfy. My wife got their tomato soup and grilled cheese, I liked them both. She thought the tomato soup was a little too acidic but still good. I almost popped for one of the happy hour sandwiches because what I seen the other patrons eating looked good, but I went for a steak so I got their filet. It was fantastic. In the end we got their butter cake or butter bar as some called it. My wife did not like that, I thought it was interesting and tasty, but a cake it is not. More like a solid block of something, but with the ice cream and berries I thought it was good, but maybe I'll opt for a different shareable desert in the future because I am coming back for sure. read more

My experience here was pretty exceptional. I dined here with my husband on our 9th wedding anniversary and we were given two glasses of bubbly to celebrate. It was a very nice gesture. The food we had was delicious. We had the goat cheese tart, beet salad, flank steak, and salmon. I don't think I can properly describe each thing we ate, but the only thing I thought was lacking was that there could have been more goat cheese in the beet salad. Everything was prepared well and all flavors were balanced to where we just wanted more bites of each. The service was also top notch - we didn't have to wait for anything.
