This is a long-standing family business in exceptionally good hands with the younger generation who're nurturing it currently. Over multiple visits, I've selected a combination of different chocolates and have found consistently high quality and freshness - these may be my favorite chocolates from anywhere I've traveled. I especially like all of the dark chocolate ones with nuts in them. The prices are extremely reasonable, too, for this high level of quality. When we get up the Hudson anywhere nearby, we strategize to make a stop here. read more

I thought this place was a bakery but it's obviously a chocolatier, duh! I stop in for special occasions because it is pricey though the chocolate is fresh and amazingly good. Their most popular item is probably the chocolate covered strawberries; my wife absolutely loves them. In the winter around Christmas time they open up their baking area to do a candy cane demonstration which is great for the kids, though the adults act like children running to the front of the presentation before the kids. read more

I was passing though Newburgh on the way from New Haven to Binghamton (maybe there is a song in that), needed to find fuel, and guess what popped up in my smartphone browser: Commodore Chocolatier! My smartphone is typically not very smart, but in this case, her IQ was very high indeed, because she found me the fuel of fuels: fine dark chocolate! As others have pointed out, the neighborhood around this store has seen better days (and so have I), but entering though the doors took me into a whole different world dominated by delicious odors and a glass vitrine that ran back the entire depth of the store. Best of all, the vitrine was full of beautiful chocolates. The owner was serving a couple ahead of me, placing dark chocolate truffles into a gift box two by two. When it was my turn, I chose to order the same assortment, and the friendly owner invited me to sample a marzipan truffle and a double-chocolate as well. The flavors welled up and swirled in my mouth like little sonatas of taste, and the textures were superb as well. It took him a while to fill my box, but the results made the wait worthwhile, and my girlfriend and I are still savoring this assortment, two by two. Next time I return, I will stock up on gift boxes to delight my friends. I must quibble with previous reviewers about the "high" price-point of Commodore's chocolates. The price there for a half pound of truffles is $15, which is well below the cost of equal chocolate from Belgium, and given that Commodore's cholcolates are both handmade and supremely fresh, I consider them to be a bargain by comparison. read more

I have to admit that the Commodore is a sentimental favorite of mine. It's a wonderful family run business that's run out of an old soda shop - you know, the kind of shop where they spell it "Shoppe". Marble floors, wood furnishings and all sorts of yesteryear charm. And the owner, John, will talk to you about chocolate for as long as you like. And it's so nice to be around people who love what they do. The chocolate is pretty spectacular across the board. I prefer their dark chocolate, not because one is better than the other, I just like dark better. This is simple and outstanding chocolate. Get their samplers if you like nuts or jellies but honestly, the best thing they make is the straight ahead chocolate. They have very nice boxes for presentation do gift wrapping, which is always great - especially around the holidays. Every time I think of a special occasion, I think of the Commodore. read more

I don't go to the Newburgh area very often, and have been to this store only twice. Be warned, it's very expensive! I bought gifts for people here and got a few things to try myself. So far the only item that stood out enough to be worth the price was the milk chocolate covered pignola (pine) nuts. I really liked those. Otherwise I had chocolate covered marshmallows and marzipan, both okay, but not exactly worth the price. It hasn't deterred me however, from going back to try more! So far the staff I've encountered have been very nice and efficient. Its a family owned business, and usually staffed by family. I just wish it wasn't quite so expensive. read more

Totally depressed environs tot he point I was concerned about parking the car but once past the initial impression and inside it was obvious this was a family run hand made chocolate shop with likely some history in the neighborhood. A very nice find! I've driven past this place almost daily for the past year. Today I finally went in, and I am very pleased I did!! The owner is very nice and helpful, answering my ever question with patience! I had a lot, because I basically wanted one of everything. They're probably filler because there is no possible way these people went to the same store I went to. I'd rather pick up a Hershey bar than use my hard earned money on this sub-standard, expensive garbage. Very good quality chocolate at reasonable prices if you are into quality. I would say that Commodore is one of the last standing remnants in a town that that seen better days. Located on Broadway next to J&F pizza(yum) , across from the post office you will find a great little piece of heaven in the middle of Newburgh. I have always walked by and smelled chocolate, The smell of fresh chocolate is heavenly, thought, interesting, I bet it is way too expensive.. After my friend mentioned I try it for my lady friend. I recently went in a few days before Valentines day and was surprised at the selection and the Chocolatiers packaging each box by hand. I would recommend this to anyone who is a chocolate connoisseur or someone who just wants a taste of something sweet with high quality. I would compare on par with the likes of Godiva or Lindt chocolate. Though unless you are going to the Godiva or Lindt factory who knows how long the chocolate has been sitting.. Blows away any Hersheys, Whitmans, or Dove chocolates.. Support the local community and a great family owned business. read more

Grew up appreciating the Commodore. There is a very good reason the price is higher than Hershey's...the ingredients are the real deal. No imitation or flavoring....real vanilla for example and made by hand. It's about quality and the fact that it's a family run business....small business we should be supporting them in this economy! The chocolate is very rich. A solid piece of chocolate really is solid. You might have to use a hammer to break it. The prices at the Commodore are more than the local Walmart, but it's worth it. I'm happy to see that it is still open. read more

I've been coming here for years. They have great artisan chocolate and candies. I typically buy gift boxes for clients here and they always love them. The only off putting thing about this place is the workers behind the counter. They are always either bitchy or pompous. Anyway, I go in there to buy about $200 in chocolate and candy as gifts. It was a fairly simple order as half of it was pre-packaged chocolate or candy. I wanted two boxes of chocolates (one 2 lb. and one 1 lb.) They were busy for the holidays and the guy behind the counter says "you know we have pre-packaged boxes behind you". I respond with "I know but I really want to pick my own as I have some favorites". You would think this would be enough but he says "There are some really nice selections in the pre-packaged boxes". I said I'm sure but I would really prefer to select my own. Keep in mind that this is $30 per pound chocolate, not Hersheys. He begrudging gets out the boxes, weighs everything, and ties a nice bow on them. I get home and open the small one and the chocolates are strewn across the box in a jumbled mess. Every other time I purchased these in the past they were neatly arranged. The 2 lb. box has a huge hump in the middle of it. I can only imagine what my client will think when he opens that box. Never again! Too bad as their chocolate is really good. Now I have to go to NYC for some good chocolate. read more
