Looking for lunch recently, my date and I decided on the Commerce Cafe. I had the Chicken Fried Steak, with green beans and potatoes cooked in duck fat. It was totally awesome, although the potatoes cooked in duck fat is rich. One of the other things I enjoyed, was watching the chef and sous chefs busily, preparing and plating the food in unionism, it was something you would see in fine dining. Great food, great staff. We haven't had any issues the times we've gone to eat here. Small menu, so you can try everything! Everything has been spot on! This is one of the usual spots to hit up in Lockhart when we don't feel like cooking. It's a must try. read more

Horrible service!! We were seated 30 minutes later still no food however, the couple who came in and were next to us were served 20 minutes later while we waited for our meal. No excuse for poor service. read more

What a small gem of a place. The quality of the food ( we had the roast chicken and the chicken fried steak) is remarkable at this price point. The care and attention to the vegetables accompanying each dish is impressive: carrots in molasses sauce, duck fat fried potatoes and the best roasted cauliflower I've ever had. Alcohol prices are reasonable. The only comment was that service was a bit rough...we had around 3:30 and they were obviously prepping fir the dinner service. But we'll be back!!!! read more

We have eaten at Commerce Cafe quite a few times since it opened. It started out GREAT but honestly the last couple of times (recently) the food has been SO salty we couldn't eat some of it - which was not the case earlier. New chef with a super salty palate? Not sure but unless they dial it back we will not be eating there again. That said, if they get the salt issue handled we will definitely head back in ... and update our star rating. The service is always super friendly and prompt and the space is cute and welcoming. Hopefully they will correct their issue! read more

Great new place in Lockhart. The owners also run one of the best restaurants in all of Austin called Foreign and Domestic. It's one of my favorites in Austin and to have a very similar restaurant of there's here in Lockhart is a freaking blessing. Try the risotto it's a dish you can't get many places and they do it perfect. The pork chop. Spaghetti. All of it is awesome. Super glad they are here. read more

Spent a week on Austin and the Hill Country and the best meal we had was at The Commerce Cafe. Everything about this place is 5 star. We had chicken fried steak which was superb and the Caesar Salad was so fresh and the best ever. Absolutely don't forget the grueyer cheese popovers. You'll want to come back just for them. My wife and I had the pleasure of trying this cafe tonight on a quick trip from San Antonio. The staff was extremely friendly and the service was terrific. We ordered the puff pastries for an appetizer which were very tasty. For our entrees, my wife ordered the chicken sandwich special with homemade chips. I ordered the chicken fried steak with smashed potatoes that were pan-fried in duck fat...DELICIOUS! To add to our enjoyment, the price was extremely reasonable for great food. Lockhart is known for its BBQ restaurants but Commerce Cafe is a real contender for great food and experience. read more

I just wanted to say that I've only been to Commerce Cafe in Lockhart once, and I had the most amazing server. His name is Isaiah, I have had the honor of having him serve me but most of all for being my friend. He taught me so much and was patient even when it seemed he wasn't, but if you've ever been served by him I'm sure you feel the same way. I know I know, most people like to think the customer is always right but be nice to your servers especially if they take the time to be courteous and nice as well. Thank you Isaiah, those were the best potatoes and popovers I've ever had. My compliments to the chef, but you made them that much better with greeting me with that big smile of yours, so thank you it means more than you know. read more

I always hate it when my husband and I dine out and afterwards he tells me "he wants his money back." First of all the meal was not bad. We ordered the Roasted Chicken with mushroom au jus and molasses glazed carrots ($17) The chicken consisted of 2 scrawny legs the size of my thumb with a strip of breast meat attached. The legs were probably Rock Cornish and not chicken judging from the size and I am guessing the attached meat to be breast as it was white and not dark meat. Also overcooked/dry. Au jus was salty. Legs sat atop a mound of lengthwise quartered carrots. These were crunchy at the thick end and gradually soft as you neared the carrot tip. Glaze was undetectable as salty au jus also covered carrots. Other selections seem to have more positive reviews. We also gave dessert a try. My husband loves cinnamon rolls, usually for breakfast, but as choices were limited ordered one for dessert ($4) He said the cinnamon rolls from HEB Bakery are better. Also ordered a Brownie ($1.50) which was saved from total dryness by being warmed so that the large chocolate chips were melted and gooey. There is no ambience. Just a large room which would be very noisy if busy. You place your order at the counter before sitting down. Food is brought to your table. You can sit at a counter and watch your meal being prepared. Employees (3--2 cooks, 1 waitress ) wore masks. Tables are spread far apart and there is outside dining at tables out front of the building. Parking is free on street. read more
