The East Market - Another crep

    The East Market

If you're looking for a place where you can literally walk in hungry and leave planning your next…read morevisit before you hit the parking lot -- that's East Market. This place is a food lover's playground. The vibe is energetic but relaxed, with a collection of food booths serving everything from comfort eats to globally inspired dishes. It's the kind of spot where everyone in your group can order from a different vendor and still sit together -- which I love. First up for me was Saba's, and wow... I ordered the Mediterranean brisket cigars. These were smoked brisket, shredded super fine and infused with BBQ and Tennessee whiskey, wrapped in a wonton wrapper, then deep fried to crispy perfection. They were served with a cilantro cream dipping sauce that took them over the top. The outside had that perfect crunch, and the inside was smoky, savory, and just a little sweet from the whiskey infusion. Absolutely incredible. One of those bites where you pause and go, "Okay... this is special." Then I headed over to Buck City Sammies and ordered the Bodega sandwich -- and let me tell you, this sandwich does not play around. Wagyu beef grilled and shredded, layered with aged sharp cheddar and American cheese, topped with garlic confit sauce, lettuce, tomato, and red onions on a baguette. The beef was rich and flavorful, the cheese melt was on point, and that garlic confit sauce tied everything together beautifully. Every bite was balanced, hearty, and ridiculously delicious. East Market isn't just a place to eat -- it's a place to explore. Multiple booths, huge flavors, and something new to try every time. If you're in Columbus and love great food, this is a must-visit. I'll definitely be back for round two.

Even though I grabbed my actual meal next door at Local Cantina Trolley Barn, I still walked through to get the vibe, take in the energy, and check out who's serving what. Vendors you'll spot inside: * Creole 2 Geaux -- Cajun/Creole comfort dishes * Just Chicken -- crispy chicken sandwiches & tenders * Koso -- ramen, noodles, and rice bowls * The Pitt BBQ -- smoked meats and sides * Hisham's Bakery -- Middle Eastern pastries * Reverie -- cocktails & spirits * The Plant Gays, Poke Bowl, and dessert spots like The Cheesecake Girl (Perfect for groups that can't agree on anything.) Good-to-know for first-timers: * There's no single line -- each vendor has its own counter. * You'll order your food, grab your tray, and then find a seat anywhere in the building. * The bar inside stays active, especially evenings and weekends. * On busy nights, seats turn over fast but not instantly -- be ready to do a little "table scouting." * The building itself is renovated with a historic trolley barn feel -- lots of natural light and exposed brick. * Great place to bring out-of-towners: you can sample multiple Columbus spots without driving all over the city. Even without eating inside this time, it reminded me why East Market works: It solves the "What are we eating?" standoff better than almost anywhere else in the city. Save this if you want a go-to Columbus spot with options, drinks, and an easy setup for groups. Question for the community: What vendor are you loyal to in here? I'll try them on my next actual eating visit.

Pretty big menu of bar classics plus a lot more. Wings are up under the appetizers, and they are pretty basic: Buffalo or barbecue, baked, with blue cheese and celery. No other options. But, simple is sometimes best. They came out steaming, 10 pretty good-sized meaty wings. The sauce was heavy, but not dripping off, although you are going to need the napkins and wet naps they bring. The barbecue was tangy and sweet, but not overly so. I really enjoyed them. Could've maybe used a little more celery to give me some kind of a health balance. Service was excellent. Prices are decent. It's hard to tell what's high anymore, but they are competitive. The atmosphere in the place was cool. People eating, drinking, talking, watching games. I would definitely come back.

So let me just start by saying the portions here are GENEROUS. And when I say generous, I mean…read moregenerous. We ordered two meals to split between two people and I think we had 8 meals between the two of us. Anyways, the restaurant itself is super easy to miss. Its right off of Cleveland Ave and if you aren't familiar with the area, you can drive right past it without noticing. Google maps does help but if you're like me and have no idea what "on your left in 1000 feet means" then best to try and look out for the sign and be prepared to make a u-turn. There is a small parking lot out front but again, very easy to miss, especially in the dark. As it is still COVID times, I can't rate the interior dining experience. I do have to admit, it didn't seem like the nicest area but the best food always comes with a journey and a story. We parked, went inside and were greeted with a wide array of tantalizing scents. The staff was friendly and had our food ready for pick up. Basic COVID measures were in place, masks, social distancing, cleanliness. With our food they included soda and bananas, more on the bananas later. We also got a couple cups of soup, so protip, ask for soup if they have some! So we took this behemouth bag of food home and finally sat down to try it. I'll start with the soup, it was such a great flavor. Heavy on the goat/lamb flavor if you've ever had that but not in any overwhelming way. It was just so flavorful! The chicken kalankal also was just bursting with spices and was a great accompaniment to the yellow rice it came with. It was a very warm dish and very reminiscient of South Asian curries. The goat cubes were also delicious, fairly tender and again all those spices and sauce was very well soaked up by the rice. There are bones that come with the goat cubes so if you aren't used to eating things with bones, be careful cause there could be little pieces here and there. Overall, the food was amazing and I'll definitely be coming back to try more dishes in the future. So about those bananas. My friend and I, being ignorant, had no idea whether the bananas were dessert, appetizers, whatever so weren't really sure how they fit into the meal. However, I do have one friend who told me he eats bananas and rice so I tried a piece of the banana with the overall dish. It actually worked really well, the sweet creaminess of the banana balanced out some of the spices from the meat very well. Whether or not I did the right thing is up to y'alls interpretation. Anyway, this was a very long review but in summary, Darbo is a great restaurant to try if you want some flavor heavy food. Also ensure you come with an empty stomach cause you can eat a meal for days!

The kind of spot where you expect a solid beer and maybe some decent bar food. What you don't expect? One of the best Detroit-style pizzas of your life hiding behind a window in the back like some carb-based speakeasy. And when I say hidden, I mean hidden. No flashy signage. No "best pizza in town" ego. Just a quiet little window cranking out square pies that deserve a standing ovation. I ordered the classic red top -- already a bold move -- and added pesto because balance matters and I like to live a little. The result? Beyond reproach. Fresh, loaded toppings. Sauce with depth. And that crust... that beautiful Detroit crust. Crispy edges with that caramelized cheese halo, but still chewy and pillowy inside. The textural contrast is what separates amateurs from legends -- and this? This was legend-level execution. Easily top 3 Detroit-style pizzas I've had. And that's not a casual statement. If you don't understand the life-altering power of true Detroit-style pizza, I regret to inform you... you have not been living. Go find the window in the back. Trust me.

It was shortly after a huge snow storm so parking was not easy to find but somehow we lucked out and found a spot on High St right out front. Once we made our way through the doors the host greeted us and they actually had a table available right away. Score! We sat down and our waitress was also at our table right away. She told us about their lunch special (pizza and a salad), gave us recommendations, and went to grab our drinks. Now, I cannot come here and not get their kale caesar salad. It's seriously amazing! So I went with the lunch special and the roasted garlic pizza. Everything was SO GOOD and came out pretty quickly. The pizza was a nice size and I was able to take a few slices home to enjoy later. While there isn't a location super close to me, I definitely won't be sleeping on them again.
