I'd fiddled and adjusted and just wasn't happy so I brought in a pair of boots that I'd bought months before and asked for a refund. There was no drama, no issue, no problem. 10 minutes later I had a new pair of shorts and $40 or $50 refunded to my credit card and I was back in the car. An older lady with long straight grey/white seemed to have been following me. I was in several parts of the store, and no matter how long I was in an area she kept popping up and "working" right around and even behind me. Once I started noticing I would start browsing at a new area of the store and then poof! There she was again! Made it very uncomfortable, and being a POC I hate that it had to feel like this was racially-charged. NOT ONCE did she ask how everything was doing or if me or my partner needed help. This is a much smaller REI than usual, so they don't have as much of a selection. It's REI, so a lot of their inventory is higher priced. They can have some good promo deals, but their customer service is terrible.

I wish I remembered the employee's name, he was the only one there on a Sunday morning, but he was excellent. He helped answer all the questions we had about our fishing trip to Castaic Lake for the first time. He showed us all the recommended baits/lures/tackles, educated us on different casting setups, and took the time to show us how to efficiently and effectively tie everything together. With his recommended products and setup (that he helped put together) on my daughter's toy fishing pole, she caught her first fish (bass!) within 10minutes of being on the boat. He has the attitude, professionalism, and customer service skills to carry that location and make it an amazing place to do business. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about my experience with the current General Manager. In my opinion, the Bakersfield location would be much better served with someone like Drew leading the team. Drew stood out to us as someone who knows how customers should be treated and how a business should be run. Bought a travel trailer June 25 ( 16 months ago ) it LITERALLY has been at their shop for a…read morecombined total of 8 MONTHS for repairs and warranty work. Some of the work had to be redone multiple times because they simply could not do it right the first time or ironically there was new damage while in their possession but was told it was manufacturer defects and they had to get it warrantied. Had several upgrades like an inverter installed. Had to take it back the day after I brought the trailer home as they couldn't wire it / install it correctly. It took them three tries to set up the weight distribution hitch correctly. Had a battery disconnect switch installed ( this was supposed to disconnect the trailer from the batteries to prevent any parasitic draw and allow the 400 watt solar system to keep the batteries charged ). What they did was wire the switch to disconnect the solar charging system from charging the batteries and allowed any draw from the trailer to kill the batteries over time. One visit for warranty work the trailer was at their facility for 3 1/2 months straight. Their follow up and communication regarding status and update is horrible. Currently have been asking the finance department for assistance in cancelling the extended warranty and other addon's. Been 3 weeks now and virtually ZERO REPONSE...!!! AGAIN, WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. BUYER BEWARE!!!

Unfortunately, the manager refused to make an exception, even though it was only two days past the return period. I ended up having to purchase another pair for my son for his birthday. What disappointed me most was the way the situation was simply handled and that the final decision had been made. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this location. Good customer service starts with good management, and a good manager can make a big difference in keeping customers coming back.
