Whether we are looking to grab drinks on the weekend, or a bite to eat, Cole's has always been a place we can rely on. The location is very convenient. I have been coming here since college,and it's within walking distance from the Delevan dorms at Canisius (granted- it's a pretty long walk). Their food will always hit the spot and their water refill game is STRONG! I have never had bad food or bad service. It's usually loud, usually busy, usually a little dark inside. More times than not you won't have someone immediately greet you when you sit down because of how busy they are, but they will always be friendly and accommodating. They have an extensive list for wine and beer. If you are going to the bar, it's small and gets crazy on weekend nights so expect to wait. Won't be long before another "what do you want to eat? We go to this iconic restaurant every time we visit our kids at UB. Food is delicious (classic bar food), but the atmosphere is what brings us back every time. Cozy, classic, warm and inviting. Old school pub style with quirky decor. Staff have always been great and accommodating. Parking can be challenging, but worth a block or 2 walk. I absolutely LOVE the food here. I've been here probably 50 times (no exaggeration needed) and this place is consistent. They have some of the BEST wings in town, but my usual is the Chipotle Chicken with upgrading the fries to loaded. I order this 95% of the time. The Chipotle Chicken- it has avocado, pepper jack and a Chipotle spread, what else could a California girl like me want? It's always cooked perfectly, the Chipotle has a slight kick to it but not overpowering so that all the flavors work together. The Loaded Fries- hands down my FAVORITE fries in Buffalo. They never disappoint. The fries themselves are perfectly crispy with a nice potato inside. They then pile on the cheese, bacon and scallions and are served with a side of ranch. The bacon is cooked to perfection. It's not those pathetic bacon bits by real, good sized, bacon chunks with fantastic flavor. I shouldn't write this review while being hungry... might have to go get these fries for lunch. My only complaint is that service is extremely slow. But the food is worth the wait. I try to practice my patience whenever I come here. I usually ask for a carafe of water because those glasses are tiny and I don't like waiting for refills. 5 of us went for Sunday brunch which starts at 11:00 it looked promising with at-least 30 people waiting to get it but that might have been the problem . Three of us had Luke warm food 2 had nice hot food ( maybe go layer after the rush) 2 of us had the Colorado hangover burrito they were the like warn and bland did not taste any chorizo . I'd call it Old School Buffalo Pretty sure it's one of the oldest restaurants in the area, & it really has that old Irish Pub charm to it. Noise level is incredibly loud in the restaurant. Almost painfully so. The food is really good, the beer selection is spectacular, I would highly recommend it for a group of people proficient in sign language -- what a blast it would be. If no one ever told you, Cole's is the best bar in the world. I started coming here years ago when a ex girlfriend introduced me. Since then I have enjoyed every minute I had here. The drinks are delicious and fairly priced. The staff is friendly and happy to be there. The food has always been good and more than you would expect from a bar. Cole's also has a patio. This was supposed to be a birthday celebration for my 50th birthday but ended up being bad service and bad burgers. Our server took a while to take our order but the wait for our food and our check was even longer. I ordered the buffalo combo best part of the dinner. Wings were great and beef was tender. My husband and son ordered burgers. Ordered medium. They were dry and well done. Needless to say thank god for ice cream cake at home. Our waitress did ask for pop refills after all glasses were empty. Most waitresses just come with refills considering our meals haven't arrived yet. Our food was delivered about half hour later by another waiter whom asked if we needed anything. That was the last time anyone bothered with us until we tracked down our waitress for the check about 40 minutes later. There were even tables that waited almost 20 minutes just to place there order. If it was busy I would have been ok, but it was quite empty. When we got there there was only 3 tables with people and one already had food. So good and service should have been better. Cole's is an Elmwood staple and is a hit for college students as well as locals looking for a good meal and a night out. Their food is always delicious, its perfect American/Irish pub food; burgers, fries, chicken tenders, you name it. They also have the Buffalo staples of Beef on Weck and chicken wings. Their wings are some of my favorite in Buffalo as they are crispy and well seasoned. Their late-night scene is always fun, especially Ladies Nights on Tuesdays, where you can get discounted drinks and a reusable cup. They have a full bar and an extensive drink selection of bottled and on-tap beers, wines, and cocktails. This review is for their Sunday brunch only. We walked in shortly after noon, it was pretty busy but not packed. We were seated right away. I personally think they squeezed in one too many tables in the bar area, and with the heavy wooden chairs it was very hard to maneuver them around and also they all made horrible loud screeching noises. We got the $10 pitcher of mimosa. I don't know what kind of champagne they use but I barely tasted it and it was completely flat - waste of money. My one friend ordered their original Bloody Mary and liked it. Moving onto the food... I got the crab Benedict - it came on toasted and buttered English muffin which was yummy, but I feel like the eggs were slightly overcooked, and the sauce was just ok. The whole thing tasted only slightly warm, like it was ten seconds away from it being cold. The home fries that came with it was completely cold and inedible, like it was leftovers from last night. So, old cold home fries and stayed-out-too-long crab cake Benedict = very bad in my book. Our waitress was ok. She came by to ask how everything was but before any of us could say anything she was already walking away, so even if I wanted to say anything I didn't get a chance to. Not that I was going to say anything though, cause I typically only do that at fine dining restaurants since I'm also paying triple the price... I tend to think that they are less likely to spit in my food - but really, who knows. Anyway, I'm very disappointed in the brunch here and won't be back for it. Our server was fantastic, greeted us with her name and was "Johnny on the spot" with the refills. Food was great (always is). But we were seated in the booths not too far from the host stand and my girlfriend and I witnessed a male server berate and talk down to the host over polishing silverware. I used worked in the restaurant business for a long time and got my fair share of tongue lashings but never ever were they in front of customers. I understand it can be a cutthroat industry but nobody deserves to be talked down to like that. As the server was yelling at the host he said something along the lines of "it's a bad look on our business when you sit here and do fucking nothing". It's a million times worse for the business when a server is yelling at a host in the middle of the dining room. So i finally partook in Sunday Funday, and i was not disappointed! We started at Cole's and i woke up my liver with a Moonshine Mimosa. It wasn't as heavy of a hitter as i expected but tasted amazing and started my buzz off right. As for my meal, i did the Smoked Salmon with Potato Latke. Let me just start off by saying, i have never tasted something that did what this meal did to my taste buds. The smokey flavor of the salmon nicely paired with the creaminess of the poached egg and cream cheese. Good lord. I can't wait to go back. I decided to stop in and have a fish fry for lunch around 2 p.m. I ordered a beer battered haddock fish fry and it came with french fries, and coleslaw. I have had one fish fry in the past and it was very good but this time the fish was soft and Soggy and it appeared to be a few days old. Fish is supposed to be firm and Flaky but this definitely was not. I love coleslaw so I asked him to make sure I get a good bowl full but after having a taste it was terrible. Over the years I've been to Cole's several times for lunch and dinner and many times for drinks. This past Sunday, I finally made it for brunch. Drinks: the bartenders are always good but if there is any crowd, the bar area is pretty impassible. There is this partition between the bar and the dining room that doesn't leave much room in between. It would be improbable to hang out with a large group at the actual bar. Best bet at night is to get your drinks and plan on taking a seat elsewhere. Lunch/Dinner: I've always enjoyed everything I've had, and I've been too many times to remember specifically everything that I've ordered. But I do recall a burger and a pasta dish in particular that I really enjoyed. No problems with service either. They seem solid on this point. Brunch: was a bummer. It was on my to-try list for a while and I had heard really good things. Maybe that set my expectations too high. I ordered the steak and eggs which would have been a good value, but the over-easy eggs were over-done and the homefries were the cubed, from a bag in your freezer type. Based on my dinner and lunch experiences, I would have expected better from Cole's. The steak however, was done medium perfectly and was fantastic. Overall, not bad. We asked to be seated outside and she took us to the alley. My wife asked if we could be seated by the sidewalk instead and the hostess rolled her eyes and huffed. She stated that table was for large parties (5). The place was dead because it was 5:00PM, she could have seated us there and about a half hour later she allowed a young black lady to sit there and dine alone. But I've since moved out if buffalo and have no idea if they fixed those benches.*** Last night (Sat Jun 23rd at 7 PM) my husband and I ate at Cole's on a whim. We've dined there before, gotten takeout, we both enjoy the food (especially the burgers). We arrived and decided to sit inside, and when asked whether to sit at a table or a booth, we chose a booth (we'd sat in one before). On sitting down, I stepped in (didn't slide or anything) then leaned back like normal to settle into my seat and BOOM hit my head on the back hard wood of the booth. There was an odd piece that was high up and protruding out, which is why I hit it even though I was sitting back normally. It HURT. The employee that witness this was the young man pouring our water. When he saw me grabbing the back of my head and wincing in pain he said "Hit your head?". I replied yes. He quickly said "Yeah, it happens all the time." WTF My husband quickly asked "If it happens all the time, why hasn't anyone done anything about it?". The boy didn't reply. My husband asked the question again. Still no reply. We should have just gotten up and left but at the moment we didn't know the severity of my potential injury. FAST FORWARD 18 HOURS - After deciding not to have alcohol due to the head hit, and sleeping with the help of Tylenol PM, my Sunday morning was rough. Pressure in my head, dizziness, fine motor functions seemed off. So my husband took me to the Sisters hospital ER (1 PM Sunday equals 18 hours from hitting my head). After a physical exam which warranted a CT scan, the diagnosis was a mild concussion!! I feel like CRAP and run my own business and know this will interfere with my work schedule for the next few days (hopefully not longer). All because Cole's has been negligent about a hazard that's been present in their restaurant for who knows how long and has done zilch about it. Even with people hitting their heads "all the time." I am writing this review ahead of speaking to management because I find it ridiculous that their is no manager/supervisor present on a Sunday. In a RESTAURANT. Seems extremely odd for that industry. All this typing is hurting my head further. But hopefully this review provides a warning to patrons (and you don't get concussion). This is where you go for all your cheap clothing needs. It used to be called "Kohl's" but only make up artists could remember the spelling of the store name. OK, I can't back any of that up. A really beautiful girl who is a good friend of mine named Stefaney, took me here, when I was stranded in the area and my car had stopped working. Thank you so much Stefaney, you are the best. It will not be forgotten. Except for the name of the place. Which I did forget, for the longest time. But it finally came to me and here is the review. The food was okay. The company was excellent. A great pub with an excellent section of drinks, delicious food and a cozy atmosphere. Cole's is a great place to hang out with friends, stop in for lunch and has some of the most amazing burgers that Buffalo has to offer. I recently had the pot-roast burger and my mind was absolutely blown as my taste buds exploded with delicious flavor. Their burgers really do inspire that sort of passion. After reading some of other reviews, I can't wait to come back and try some of the other burgers as well (Huey Loui Andouille? yes please!). Protip: ask to substitute the fries for a German Potato Salad. It is also one of the most delicious potato salads I have ever tasted. And for those that don't know, a German Potato Salad is not cold and does not have a mayo-base. Instead, hot potatoes are coated in a delicious beef broth with bits of bacon on top. Yum. With some great menu options and a decent atmosphere, Cole's is a great place for a lunch, dinner or to just drop in after work. You'll find a lot of Buffalo locals here, with the lunch crowd being particularly older than the night time crowd. You can choose to sit at the bar or walk to the adjacent dining room area, which has some great natural lighting when it's sunny. Not a bad place to people watch either. read more

I visited Coles last night for dinner, I haven't never eaten dinner here before and considering how I pleased I am with their brunch i was quite skeptical. As soon as we walked in we were pleasantly greeted by the hostess and we asked to sit close to a TV since the hockey game was going to be on. She sat us in the dining area directly in front of a TV. There were 3 menus on the table, your normal menu, a paper menu with specials and then a menu specifically for beer/wine. For beer I ordered the number 26-zombie killer and I LOVED it! My date got number 22-alpine hoppy birthday, also enjoyable. We didn't try any appetizer, just didn't cross our minds. For dinner I got the duck burger that was on the specials menu that has a cherry chipotle ketchup and goat cheese. My date got the lamb burger that is available on the usual menu. My duck burger was perfect in every way, I still can't stop thinking about the cherry chipotle ketchup. It turned a simple burger into a masterpiece. Could not have been any more perfect! I'm not a huge fan of lamb, but it looked very good when it came out! My date said he did like it, only complaint was that it was a little too undercooked in the middle. Pretty much raw in my opinion. Overall service was good and food was good. I would come back for sure for dinner. Probably shooting for the beer on weck next time! read more

My bartender is very excited about the baseball game. He keeps yelling "Whoo!" I mean like really yelling...but that's ok. It's the kind of neighborhood bar this is. I know one reviewer was laughing at the random stuff hanging everywhere but I think when you come in here you have to take note of some of the really cool things like the giant ornate chandeliers and epic crew boat suspended overhead. The bar has that nice dark-wood -beat-up feel. They have a good beer list and their burgers are well prepared - their fries however are a miss- they are the ones I despise the most. The ones with that bubbly fried coating on them - I took a picture - I just really hate those f****ers and my meals are always lowered a peg when those show up on my plate. But the burger bun was toasted nicely and overall it's an easy place to hang out. Coles offers a variety of experiences; brunch, dinner, late night bar scene and each leave me with an entirely different taste in my mouth, both literally and figuratively. So we've got dinner, large menu, bar food you know, we've got burgers, salads, quesadillas, sandwiches. Stuffed banana peppers weren't what I thought they were going to be, they are in a marinara sauce which I didn't think complimented the peppers well and were overly salty similarly to the spinach and artichoke dip. We were given a pitcher of water and it tasted really bad. Not sure why, maybe the pitcher wasn't cleaned properly or something. Service was friendly but kind of nonexistent for the most part. Then we have brunch. I love brunch at Coles, it is fabulous. When there's a 20 minute wait at Panos, come to Coles, or even better, just come to Coles. I have never had to wait here on a Sunday for brunch, they really do have a lot of seating. Well, never had to wait for a table, waiting for the food to actually come out is another story. Their Bloody Marys are so delicious, possibly top 3 best one's I have had at a restaurant. (I make the best Bloody Marys, IMO) I had quite the decision to make however, as they offer so many different kinds with different ingredients, flavored vodkas and various liquor choices. Some sounded nasty, like a bloody with alaskan salmon flavored vodka....say what!?!? Could be awesome, could be awful, who knows....not me, because I didn't try it and our server told us he had never sold one. Then we had bloodies with tequila, bacon infused this, cilantro infused that, it all sounded tempting. I went with the Chipotle Bloody Mary and not only did it come out within 3 minutes of me placing the order but it tasted SO good. I got a second one and the second needed to be shaken because i just sipped straight up vodka towards the end which was too much for my stomach to handle at that particular moment. The food all looked so good. My friend went with the Huevos Rancheros which was this mexican style dish that tasted amazing. Black beans, salsa, avocado, eggs, tortillas, holy mackerel the flavors were spot on. She also got a side of fries which was wimpy for $4. I got the Araxi which was a three egg omelette with mushrooms, roasted red peppers and feta. It came with "whole wheat" toast which was in fact "multigrain" there is a difference, regardless, it was splendid. The home fries were amazing too, not overly salted, just perfect. There was an upcharge for egg whites which I understood. Both dishes were MASSIVE, FILLING and straight up DELICIOUS. SLOW food service though, we were waiting a long while for our food to come out. Over 30 minutes ish which was too long I thought. Our server was great, patient with us and gave honest recommendations which was very much appreciated. $24 each for brunch, not too shabby. But then we've got the night vibe at Coles. The 1 am, crowded, waiting forever to get a beer and when you finally do get one you need to trek through the crowd to get back to your table. The struggle is real. Get two drinks at a time because it'll save you the aggravation of having make your way through the mess of people. The bar is set up in the worst way. The booths provide such an annoying barrier. There are only three openings, one on each end of the bar and one right in the middle so it's just a mad house trying to squeeze by. Once you do get a bartenders attention however, they are friendly as can be. So many beer choices, so many. Super impressive, something for everybody, tad more expensive than other bars but you're paying for the quality of the beers here. I have never come here and not banged my head into the wall, they have these ledges that jut out and happen to be right at skull level for me when I sit at a table so you've been warned. I think they need a renovation. Take the booths out that cause the annoying barrier between the bar and booths. You can't even people watch when you're sitting at the tables because you can't see past the barricade. I'm all about the people watching and it can't happen here. There is plenty of seating in the dining room on the left that I think they can afford to change things up a bit. Just a thought, I'm not interior designer or anything. I heard their trivia night is a great time on Wednesdays. Looking forward to checking it out sometime. Another thing too, I thought the bouncer checking IDs at the door was really friendly. Sometimes you get those bouncers who are grumpy as heck and utter three words and three words only, "ID" and "FIVE BUCKS" This guy was cool, laid back, just doing his job, living life and there was no cover, HOORAY. Last time I visited, we had a GIANT party of family members and friends, and they seated us without issue, even finding an extra table and chairs for a few latecomers so we could all sit together. So nice! I also had a friend with me from out-of-town, and when she wasn't mowing down on her first beef on weck (so delicious here!), she was staring at the decor: old posters, signs and carousel horses mounted above the booths. Love it! Cole's doesn't appear to have brunch on Saturdays, or at least they're not sellin' it very hard, because we only received the lunch menu at around noon on a Sat. That said, the lunch menu is solid, with a nice mix of the expected (burgers), the twists-on-an-old-staple (stuffed banana peppers with marinara), and the whoa-that-is-actually-a-brilliant-idea (lamb burgers with feta and arugula, "banh mi" pork burgers with ginger, scallions and pickled vegetables). I do wish they had more interesting salads, and maybe more than one kind of tea, but this is obviously not a health-food restaurant. Previously, I had only been to Cole's for their well know Tuesday ladies night which is just okay. The cover is still $5 for everyone and it brings in a younger crowd. The drinks are decent for a dive style bar but this is certainly not a weekly event I would rave about. I had heard from friends that they serve a pretty decent American style Sunday brunch so I decided to give it a try. We went in with a larger group of six around 2:00 on a Sunday. We asked if we could sit outside as we had a dog. We were told that even though there were ample available tables, that only a max table of four could be seated. We asked if we would be able to combine two tables in the corner, out of the way, and we were politely told this was a fire hazard. I do understand this point, however, rearranging the two tables would have freed up more space for people to move about in the off chance of a fire. We then all ordered drinks and I ordered a coffee which came with a few smaller cream containers. I mixed the cream with my coffee and noticed a few floating chunks rising to the top. I lifted one out with my spoon and was surprised to see an unmistakable green floating raft of mold. This was a little shocking and everyone who had eaten at Cole's previously was surprised. I understand this can happen at any restaurant and therefore was very understanding when alerting the waitress. She quickly took my coffee back and changed it out with a container of fresh cream. I assumed I would not be charged for the coffee as I did not ask for another after the first floating creamer mold situation. However, when the check came, I was still charged $2.50 for the coffee. I was very taken aback and quietly determined I would not be coming back for a meal again. The food was nothing to rave about but certainly much better than the coffee. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and have no complaints. One of my friends ordered the chicken and waffle sandwich which looked amazing. Over all, I tried to be open minded about the moldy coffee creamer and how it was dealt with but am still not impressed. The food was average to good. I love Cole's. Sure it's cheesy, loud, sometimes impossible to read what the hell they have on draft, and really awkward and narrow up by the bar, but the place has charm and quality products. Win! I've been to Cole's at all hours - weekday nights, weekdays, weekend days, weekend nights. Varying levels of crowdedness. I've hever had serious difficulty obtaining a drink. You just have to know where to position yourself and how to make some eye contact. If it's too overwhelming by the door, I'll cut through the dining room around to the other side of the bar to order, because there's usually less people down at the end by the men's bathroom. The selection of beer, and the pricing, are remarkable. From IPAs to barleywines to porters to seasonal ales, this place has the gammut covered and you can't be a beer lover in Buffalo and not go here. As for the food, it's excellent and very reasonably priced. The beef on weck is great, and everything from salads to burgers to french onion soup have been good. No, we're not talking gourmet food, but we're talking decent pub food. And when you just want to chill out and drink some good beer and watch a few football games, isn't that all you want? Tried the Clancy sandwich yesterday - shaved roast beef with melted provolone on toasted garlic bread with au jus dipping sauce on the side. It was awesome. I only ate half of it because I split it, but I could have eaten a whole one. It was the bread -- toasted on the inside on a grill - that made it fantastic. Highly recommended sandwich. Cole's is great for large parties too. I was there last year with a party of 15 and they handled it like champs. There's also an upstairs private function room. I've been to Cole's a bunch of times over the year - for drinks, burgers, wings, entrees, etc. Everything is consistently good, including the food, service and prices. Most recently we took my in-laws to Cole's for Mother's Day brunch because Cole's is listed as "one of the top 15 brunches in Buffalo). First, I was super appreciative that they fit us in a week prior to Mother's Day. (My in-laws were originally supposed to be out of town so we were late planning.) The service was good, very attentive and efficient. We each got a drink - two people had a beer-mosa, one had a mimosa, and one a mixed drink. All of the drinks were well mixed and pretty strong. I had the brunch burger - complete with a fried egg on top and bloody mary ketchup. The burger was delicious. However, from the moment you cut into it and then picked up the first half, you could not put it down. It completely disintegrated in your hand. The fries were good - fresh, crisp on the outside and soft inside. I loved the specialty ketchup (!) and will apparently be trying a bloody mary at some point, even though I don't like most of the ingredients. My husband had am omelette and home fries, both of which were quite good. My in-laws both had the eggs benedict, which were reported as a little over-cooked. Cole's is a classic Buffalo pub located on Elmwood, surrounded by other bars and shops. They have a deliciously compact food selection and a mile long beer menu. It's cosy, dimly lit atmosphere makes for a great first date or fun place to bring adult family members. My most recent trip, I chose the field greens and goat cheese salad with grilled portobello mushroom. Delicious. Roasted red pepper, toasted walnuts. The balsamic dressing was tossed, perfect amount. The person I was with chose the Colorado lamb burger. Loved the tzatziki. read more

I love Coles. It's very conveniently located and the people are great. Bartender gave me a sample of the IPA's I ordered before giving me the full thing, and I didn't have to ask. Not a lot of places give that courtesy lately. It's dark and there are usually candles on each table. The bar area is kind of small, so when it gets busy, it's kind of insane to try and walk to the bar and get a drink without entering the personal space of everyone in the bar. I always see someone I know there, but I guess that's just Buffalove in general . Overall, very nice place to go out. Also they have BANGIN food. And brunch! Who doesn't love brunch!? X's and O's! Damn, this brunch is great! If you like a loud pub vibe on a Sunday with a great beer list and really creative brunch dishes you will love this place. I was told by the locals to skip over Duff's and give this place a try for the "authentic" experience. It was a late night at work and I ordered their food on grubhub. I got wings; half medium and half BBQ. They were some of the better wings I'd had, but not the best. It comes with blue cheese, carrots and celery. The portion sizes are pretty large as well. God, I hate this place. Bad food, snotty bartenders and (wait for it) a,sandwich board sign out front last May that read (I am not making this up): "Happy Memorial Day!
