Not sure why everyone seems to like this place. I went for the first and hopefully last time last night to see a friend's band play.
The first thing that I did was take a seat at the bar, and got to listen to what I have to assume are either drunk college kids or young pirates screaming at each other from across the room. This, coupled with the fact that sound echoes off of the walls of the room, really put me on edge.
Aside from the screaming pirate children, some crazy guy was hawking bracelets, and another crazy/drunk guy that smelled like a sewer started talking to me about how the bracelet guy is a "perv who wants blow jobs", then proceeded to ask me if I have any cigarettes.
Another thing that seemed kind of strange was that 90% of the people were drinking PBR. WTF people, the place has good beer, what are you thinking!? I began to think that maybe I'd stumbled into some alternate, socialist reality where PBR was the national beer.
I'm not too familiar w/Logan Square. Maybe crazy, smelly, loud, inconsiderate, drunk people with no taste are the norm. So, I can't judge the place purely by it's clientele, and will focus the rest of my review on the bar itself.
I ordered a "Cain and Ebel" (one of my favorites), which they had on tap. I was thinking that this was a good sign, until I tasted it and realized that it was a bit off, and maybe stale. Boo.
The area behind the bar was incredibly disorganized. Liquor bottles were scattered or lumped together here and there, without any discernible pattern. There is a beer bottle display on one end of the bar, and a few scattered bottles sitting elsewhere for reasons unknown. The lighting was too bright initially. Thankfully, someone eventually dimmed the overheads, but there remained a bright light with no shade behind the bar that blinded me whenever my eyes passed over it.
The stage area where the band played was oriented so that a lot of people ended up having to crowd around the men's bathroom door, which made it so that if anyone needed to get in, they'd have to wade through people, and open the door so that everyone can see inside at whoever else might already be at the urinal.
All of that being said, it seems like the proprietors are trying hard to have a decent bar. They have a decent beer selection, and maybe just don't get a chance to sell enough of it. If that's the case, maybe if they put more thought into the layout and environment of the place, and kicked obnoxious people out, they'd attract more of the people that would drink the good stuff. read more
