I used to grab a sandwich at Cold Spring Cheese Shop quite often on my trips to cold spring, but lately I haven't really been enjoying my stops here. This time around I ordered the salami and blue cheese and the roast beef special. The cheese and bread are all super fresh, but that didn't stop the roast beef sandwich from being a bit bland. The salami and blue cheese sandwich is a favorite of mine, and again was super fresh, but the sandwich was small and doesn't come with any veggies. I think the reason I am giving this two stars, and not three of four, is because of the ambiance and service. This time we waited around 20 minutes just to order our sandwiches, as there was only one person in the front, and they spent 15 minutes letting some people ahead of us sample cheese. The shop was packed, but the line was barely moving. We also saw the employees stick his nose in some mortadella and sniff it... not sure if that was a quality check but it was a bit of a turn-off. The shop itself is cute, but it has no bathroom or indoor seating, which is a must after a long car ride or hike (the area is famous for hiking). There are two outdoor tables, but they are extremely cramped. We sat down with our baby and there just wasn't enough room for us and the three ladies next to us, so my husband ate standing up. The cheese itself is quite nice and the staff is quite knowledgeable about what they products they offer. However, I like to stop here for lunch, and the lunch menu is limited to sandwiches. There are only a few sandwiches offered (maybe 5 and two specials) and they don't rotate through menu items very often, so I feel like I've tried each sandwich they offer multiple times over at this point. The sandwiches are usually quite bare and don't come with many veggies or variety. So that being said, I've been returning less because I'm a bit bored by the offerings. read more

Fantastic sandwich. My dad and I went in yesterday and we got the mozzarella with prosciutto and the turkey and both sandwiches were excellent. I especially liked the fig preserves and my dad loved the lemon dill spread on his turkey sandwich. The bread was soft yet crunchy and all the ingredients were very fresh. Got here on a busy Saturday morning, maybe around 11 am. It's a quaint shop with a small sandwich menu, but lots of meat and cheese selections. They seem to pre-make all of the sandwiches so it's pretty fast to checkout as they just grab it from a basket. They were about to close the store temporarily after us though so they could make more sandwiches. Proscuitto & Brie ($12) - solid sandwich on a baguette. The bread was a little tough but could still chew through it. Simple, but all the flavors worked well together. Saw the charcuterie boards as well, but they looked underwhelming. I loved this store! The young gentleman behind the counter was wonderful! He helped me create a small cheese platter for two, and it was fantastic! He was very knowledgeable about the products, and there were a lot to choose from. He asked me questions about our preferences, and took that information and filled our small cheese platter (around $25) with delicious cheeses, and sprinkled in some water crackers, nuts and dried fruits. I also picked up a package of walnut date crackers which went so well with the spreadable blue cheese. Oh, and he also threw in plastic knives for us to spread the cheese! I loved this place and highly recommend it! The picture I took isn't great, but it was great how he marked the lid with the particular types of cheese we chose. read more

They are selling sandwiches and precut cheese. Went there and was given a old sandwich on stale bread with wilted greens and stale cheese. Asked if it was made yesterday (it clearly was not made today) and though was told they "make the sandwiches daily" it was made yesterday. When I asked if they could make a fresh one was told no. I'm sure the cheese is good and I definitely want to support local businesses selling local product, but a $12 sandwich should not be sitting in the refrigerator overnight and sold the next day. so let me say that for my experience i would give this place 5 stars but we really only bought meat and cheese so i want to give room for the extra star when i go back and try their sandwiches that looked really good. the workers were friendly and knowledgeable when we had questions. they had a big variety of meats and cheeses to choose from. even their pre packaged food seemed well thought out and logical. very unassuming outside that packs a punch when you get inside. we left buying too much meat and cheese because we couldnt pick just one or two options.........and then we had to suffer through more days of eating delicious meats and cheeses with crackers. whoops. hope everyone makes the same "mistake" we did. read more

I had a question about offerings at the Cheese Shop and sent a message via Yelp. The owner, Timothy, responded quickly even with the holidays, which was impressive. I stopped by the next day and stocked up on some more Hudson Valley Chocolates, which were just about out. SInce then I heard from my best customer that his wife loved the chocolates, which was great to hear of course. The shop has a wonderful array of cheeses as you would imagine, but there also a number of local products like pickles, cookies, and peanut butter. I picked up a jar of the latter and it was delicious. I see Cold Spring Cheese Shop as the perfect stop before heading to something like a Shakesapeare performance. We'll stock up on cheese, crackers and local snacks, grab some wine down the street and be on our way. By the way, if you haven't been to Cold Spring, it's definitely worth the trip, even in winter. Having never been to Main Street in Cold Spring, I decided to check it out. Cold Spring is expensive and this shop reflects that. After recovering from minor surgery and having a bad case of cabin fever, I paid $4 for a brownie (seriously???), **$8** for a small container of chopped chicken liver (come ON), god knows what for the cheese. I got two empanadas. One was cheese and whatever cheese that it had *been* filled with had all gone into the side of the empanada, leaving the "pie" totally empty, no taste of cheese at all, an air filled empanada. The chicken empanada was filled with dry, fairly tasteless, shredded chicken. If you want great empanadas try the ones at the Ossining Farmer's market on Saturdays. They are awesome. I also got some crisps of some kind...all totally impulsive buying due to boredom, I admit. My bill came to $40.00 The woman who waited on me was very nice and friendly but I have no desire to return to Main Street in Cold Spring. I'll stick to hiking in the area and leave the shops to the tourists. read more

I don't know how I missed this place on other recent visits, since a storefront that says "CHEESE" is pretty much my idea of a good time. But I did. And so, Yelpers, I'm writing to make double sure you don't make the same mistake. This place is cheese heaven. Amazing selection (especially of local cheeses), great prices, and a super-friendly and knowledgeable team. After gabbing a bit with Timothy, the owner, we bought a couple of whole, small cheeses--the kind that are already wrapped--on his recommendation. But then I said, "Man, I can't believe I'm walking out of here without tasting anything," and BOOM: Timothy starts whacking off slice after slice of his favorite cheeses. This is the kind of thing that makes me deliriously happy, and deliriously happy I was. All in all, we ended up walking out of there with three local cheeses: a gouda, a triple-cream, and a truffle-y semi-soft. Each one of them perfect versions of their style. Shops (and shop owners) like this deserve all the love, Yelpers, so if life takes you anywhere near Cold Spring's sweet Main St. anytime soon, go give some love. And get some cheese, which, as we all know, makes any day better. read more

Travelling into Cold Spring today with a companion and the store front caught our eye. Also the signage on the side walk boasting specials and kettle mac and cheese. Upon entering, we weren't greeted and weren't readily helped. The place looked great though! Cheese cheese and more cheese! I ordered the 50$ cheese board and the woman who was standing at the counter looked at me like I was insane... her words were, "for now?? That takes way too long to put together" I thought that was the strangest thing..... she just threw away a fifty dollar order.... I ended up getting the "special sandwich" which was brie cheese, ham and sundried tomato with a delicious balsamic oil mix. My friend ordered a chicken empanada and a grilled cheese. She asked if she could pick her cheese for the grilled cheese and the woman said, "well, we decide what cheese you get." This woman made the entire experience to this quaint shop uncomfortable and extremely awkward. I was taken aback by the fact that she didnt even want to be bothered with making us a cheese board and nailing that sale. It took over 20 minutes to get our grilled cheese, empanada and the "special sandwich" No sooner was our food handed to us, another employee walked in and the woman serving us exclaimed, "thank god....i was so hangry" and went to go sit in the ONLY seats in the place, by the window to eat her lunch. We left the shop feeling like we did something wrong...and we sat outside in the blistering cold because she had herself all spread out on the only seats in the place. The food however was very delicious. Good food. Terrible, terrible service. The only reason I'm putting 4 stars is because the "special sandwich" was BOMB. I probably wont be back anytime soon though. My friend and i left with a bad taste in our mouth with how we were treated. read more

Went and tried to order at this place but we were met with a nasty attitude and decided to not give our business to them. Their black board writes in ALL CAPS BOLD "Sandwiches" on the top and when asked about items, 2, 3, 4. We were met with, no they are not sandwiches and that "I cannot write everything on the black board". Just saying they were not sandwiches was probably enough to let us know, but she went out of her way to give potential customers a taste of her nasty attitude before getting food shows a lot about the culture of this establishment. Great cheese selection, but couldn't stand the atmosphere. Their main cheese monger is a nightmare and needs a serious lesson in customer service and basic respect for others. after yelling at us for not being cheese experts she forced some terrible blue cheese on my friend insisting they would like it. Sometimes people know what they like and don't want to be bullied into trying something they don't enjoy. It took us half an hour to get our order because he female owner was busy gabbing instead of working in the store she owns, she seems to be running for mayor of nothing. We did not get a chance to meet the husband but what we experienced was plenty. I was pleased with my cheese but the whole experience and smug attitude left me angry and it took so long to get our order that we almost missed our train. Mom and Pop shops should be welcoming and not such a trial. with some much needed job training this place could be truly great. read more
