To be honest, I'm relying on a Viva article for the second part of that statement, because I only went to Salvation Kitchen post-sale and the coffee was bloody awful. Don't go. Sweetie, on the other hand, was lovely and just like Little Sister, its counter-top teaming with sugary treats - like a goddamn Willy Wonka scene. Impossible to resist. My husband had arrived on the hideously early flight from San Francisco last week (yes, he came bearing gifts, and the gifts he did not manage to secure I promptly ordered online), where he was hungry and in desperate need of New Zealand milk, coffee and more importantly, eggs! Given that Little Sister is only open weekdays, this was the perfect chance to #supportlocal and head somewhere I had been dying to try out. First problem: check the bloody details, Vanessa. Little Sister does not open till 7.30am. I had assumed 7am, so we hung out in the car park for 15 minutes like losers. There's lots of parking, with very definite 'Little Sister' named spots, so unless you're absolutely blind, it's quite clear where to park up. The morning menu was quite brief, and I wasn't offered another one to check out what they offer for lunch. That's not to say I'm offended by brevity, quite the opposite. As you may have noticed, I get terrible FOMO so I appreciate obvious choices. My morning meal was therefore a hearty one - pork and fennel sausage, perfectly crisp bacon, slow cooked tomatoes with just the right amount of sweet and tart, a wonderfully spiced (yes, spiced!) potato and carrot rosti, a very large mushroom that had been bathed (and appropriately drained, leaving the sticky and tangy remnants) in balsamic vinegar, and two glorious eggs with the most vibrant orange yolk. And, of course, a knock-out latte to wash it all down.

I can see why the hype was high, with it being near full on a Friday lunch. We both actually ordered the same dish, but again with the lack of the menu options that didn't contain eggs, I swapped the eggs for avocado. The dish was good, but I think it just lacked flair and seasoning. It was just a small step away from being that much better. Also, the menu item is listed as a mushroom stack, so it implied that it was more like mushrooms on toast, so I wasn't quite expecting one large portobello mushroom, however all was cooked well. I also ordered the green smoothie - sorry this may have real name which i can't remember, it was actually really good but was not cold! It just isn't quite the same when its not cold, I suggest they add ice, or frozen banana. The cafe is chic and modern, the service could use a bit more training, just with their communication skills and acknowledgements but overall it was pleasant and I think it's a stepping stone of what can come of Henderson. In all honesty, I was surprised to find such a open spaced, clean and good looking café in Henderson (and outside of it's Westfield mall). While the coffee is average, the prices are a refreshing change to what you come to expect in the CBD. Wide windows are splayed open to the sun, the TV chatters the morning news over the ample amount of seating. Mydonose could easily fit in as a café in the city or in Newmarket. All I can deduce from the name though, is that it is a bastardization of the Turkish word for "parsley".

The coffee is also one of the best you can get around this shopping district, with just a few close contenders nearby. It is great to see more like this in Henderson, it lifts the place up and feels more inviting. The Westfield Mall is super close by, but I prefer to grab my coffee break from here in between all that consumer purchasing! I haven't tried their meals (yet) but I am aware they do breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plus you can eat indoors or out and apparently these guys also own/run Mozaic kebab. They are on Facebook too, worth checking them out if you haven't done so already.

Though this is true, it wasn't until I told my boyfriend I'd been there that I learnt it is famous. Having won awards for their quality meat and presentation, as well as peoples' choice awards including the 'Gold Plate' in 2012, The Falls is known to the majority of West Aucklanders as the best place to eat. I'm not sure if I would go quite so far as to say it was my best meal ever, but I did really enjoy my experience at The Falls. I sat out in the newly renovated courtyard with a pot of tea and a ham cheese and tomato omelette. The ambience was lovely, the wait-service was brilliant and the food was delicious - what more could you ask for? Tip: The Falls also caters for large groups and business meetings, and though I cannot say this from personal experience, I believe they would do a brilliant job at hosting such events and can't imagine anyone being disappointed with the food or the service.

When we arrived they had the option to sit inside and outside, so we decided to sit outside as the sun was out and it was a beautiful day. The falls had an overall great atmosphere with a friendly staff, putting me in a good mood. We both found the food to be delicious and were extremely satisfied with our meals, beverages and overall price of our breakfast. I will definitely be back again.

Corban Estate Arts Centre had been on my radar for a while to go visit, so earlier this week I made a lunch date with my husband at this cafe. I didn't quite know what to expect, from the cafe, not the date, as it doesn't really give much of a clue from the website or brochures, but I was very pleased to see, taste and purchase some great brunch fair for the two of us. Hubby bought the 'big brekkie' which came out with even more than we expected - get this - free range eggs on sough dough bread, ample marinated mushrooms, a super tasty (home-made?) hash brown with a touch of mustard, cooked tomato, pumpkin AND eggplant! He only just managed to eat it all with a bit of help from me; it is the best eat-in breakfast or brunch in Henderson! And If I recall correctly that meal was under $20. I got the cajun chicken wrap, also very yummy, but a bit watery which made it a tad soggy. My coffee was super duper, hubby indicated that his was only a-ok, which between us probably implies it wasn't quite strong enough. But I loved it! Now, moving on to the decor, that gets five stars for sure! Retro funk all out, bar stools, original art on the walls, and lovely, lovely wall paper. The guy serving was friendly and tried his best to be calm under a mini rush of people that entered at the same time as us (secrets out?). I also give this place five stars for not succumbing to the world of coca cola for sales - they had alternatives that are much more ethical, thankyou.
