I discovered Hare and the Turtle via twitter. A local kiwi personality tweeted that she was asked where one could get great coffee. She said, "Go down the road. Turn left...and catch a plane to Wellington." She was in Auckland and the amount of people who concurred with her was actually quite surprising.
Reading through the replies, and being quite loyal to Auckland, I searched in the hope that someone in Auckland would retort with a great coffee house in response. So when I read of one such tweet, recommending the Hare and the Turtle, I just had to drive and check for myself...before I started work that day.
Thankfully I didn't start until the afternoon. So I drove 52km and arrived at the Hare and the Turtle during the mid morning tea time.
I was greeted with a friendly smile. The layout is open and light and the large shop windows allow an ample amount of light into the cafe.
With wooden floors and tables fairly close to one another, I didn't feel claustrophobic nor did I find it noisy.
Drinks on offer were Phoenix cola, ginger beer, lemonade, tap water and obviously coffee in all of its variants.
After having been to Wellington and taking my flat whites as triple shots I did the same here.
The blend was fantastic. Loved the roast and even the milk they used was steamed and frothed to perfection. Whoever tweeted about this place was definitely on the money.
I've been back several times now. Once to buy their sumptuous toasted sandwiches for a friend post-op and also to take my mum for a coffee and a toasty.
If you love coffee and toasted cheese sandwiches, his place is great for eat in or take out. I can't recommend this place enough. Superb. read more
