Its been a wee while since I have managed to devour the populating Auckland food scene. Looking through my list of bookmarked eateries, Sunday called for brunch. Removing myself from the usual spots in the city we tried Crave in Morningside. Situated in a pretty quiet spot, the site itself was light and airy with tall ceilings and is a lot larger than the pictures presented. Extremely busy upon arriving, we added our names to the list, and as accurately estimated by the host the wait was only around 15mins for a table. Between the four of us eating, there were a few hits and misses. Upon being served, two of us received our meals before the other two with about a 3min wait between dishes served which is always a tad awkward watching other people eat before yours is served. Almost after always ordering the Mushroom on Toast dish today wasn't too far from the norm by choosing the Fungi from the menu. Instead of your standard toast option, it was served on a delicious kumara and feta cake, however the herb garlic cream was very lack lustre. It didn't give me that feeling that I wanted more and really missed that umph and body and was fairly under seasoned. It's a shame because the concept was there and presentation was a beaut. If I could make one recommendation, please serve it on a plate and not a bowl, it's frustrating to try scoop the last few bits with a fork and knife. The rest of the dining party were happily pleased with their tasty meals, with each dish having a modern switch up to your classic eggs bene and scrambled eggs. We agreed it would have been great to have a slice of toast or a hash served with the Cottled Egg just to tie the dish together. Otherwise overall the service was on point and friendly topping off a satisfied feeling upon leaving. I love everything about this place. The food and coffee are both excellent. I love the fact this place is a collective (it's explained enough in the other reviews, I won't go into it here) I love the vibe of the place. It's somewhere I could happily spend time just sipping a mocha and reading my morning emails (or Facebook news feed) Really tucked in the middle of an industrial area, Crave is a real diamond in the rough. Looks like a great place! The people behind the cafe sound like a great community aware group. They wanted to address local poverty in their area and opened up a cafe with good food and good coffee, and then use their profits to assist the locals in need! Great to see there's still people in the world that still care for others! Now for the food! I had the Fungi with Kumara (sweet potato) and feta cakes (very tasty)! Side of bacon cooked well with a sweetness to it and poached egg! Filled me completely and enjoyed it thoroughly. Now for the coffee! Oh yes elixir of life, my one true savior from the savages of the night, how will thee greet me? With over burnt milk? With a bitterness from too long a drawer, with a cheap over sweet almond milk set to send my senses reeling from diabetes onset? I thank the island gods that this is not the case. The coffee was fantastic! Smooth... good crema, great almond milk and hot (not scalding) and I can feel my humanity return to its sense of serenity... I think I'll have another one ;) Now for the service! It was busy here, packed in fact! Great atmosphere, good tunes with plenty of natural light. The wait time was a lot better than I was expecting with so many patrons seated. I had my breakfast under 7 mins (and it was hot and fresh). My coffee came about 5 mins later. The staff were friendly and all were smiling (makes you feel welcome). I was checked on and had water delivered to my table before I needed to ask. In writing this I note that two girls next to me had been waiting for their food for closer to 20 - 30mins.... (but they said it was worth the wait) The place was clean and tables were cleared very quickly (a necessity I would say due to demand), but nonetheless clean tables conveys a well run place... and it was. I would definitely recommend Crave to all travelers and locals, good food and good coffee regardless of waiting time. I can not adequately describe how freaking incredible this spot was. Came here on a recommendation from Kiko's Coffee and we were not disappointed. I forget the name of it, but I ordered the mushroom breakfast dish and customized it with an abundant number of add ons (which the restaurant accommodated with no issues)! This was quite possibly the most mind blowing breakfast I have ever eaten at a restaurant. My level of happiness is matched only by the depth of my devastation that I'll never get to eat here again (small issue of an 18 hour flight to get there)! read more

Across the board, this is a great café. Crave puts so much back into the community (see their website) that even if their coffee was utterly sub-par, they would still deserve a few stars. But the coffee and the food is really nice. I'm not just saying that - I roast my own beans at home, and would rather get hit by a bus outside most chain cafés than go inside and buy a drink from them. There's a lovely casual feel to the place too. You can sit in the normal seating area, or up on the couches by a play area for the areas (which includes a few shelves of children's books). The service is warm, friendly and I couldn't fault them. There was a slight mix-up with our order, but they handled it extremely well. It WAS a busy public holiday when I visited, so that mix-up was no slight on Crave. In a world where soulless consumerism seems like an indelible mark on our communities, and with cafés so often being a prime example of that spirit, Crave is a wonderful, warm change in the right direction. read more

Crave is a local delight situated right next to the Morningside Train Station with limited street parking out the front. With its vintage furniture and decor, Crave is warm, inviting and cozy. Perfect for a late breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea. They offer a full menu all day long (my favourite is the Beetnut - a vegetarian extravaganza ! Those candied walnuts blow my mind every time!) as well as a selection of sweets and salads in the cabinet - perfect if you're in a rush and need something to take on the go. I always appreciate a business with branded coffee cups - and Craves coffee not only looks the part - but smells and tastes just like perfection also. The barista will happily banter with you as you wait for your morning brew - customer service that can be lacking in a lot of Aucklands rush hour coffee spots. Crave is a great cafe located in a semi industrial area of Morningside near Kingsland. Crave is a collective cafe - it was created by a group of locals and was never designed to make anyone rich. Instead all the profits go straight to combating poverty, so every time you grab a coffee or some food from Crave you feel like you're doing your bit to help. While located in quite an industrial area, Crave itself is also quite industrial looking - concrete floors, beams, quite a lot of open space - it fits nicely with the location. The decor however is quite miss-matched and eclectic; stainless steel stools, coffee sack tables, a blackboard menu, lots of bright orange decorations, retro couches and lamps - while pulling off the industrial look, this decor adds an element of comfort and familiarity that reflects the community based, friendly atmosphere of Crave cafe. As well as having a great vibe and attitude, Crave also has great Supreme coffee. It's all fair-trade - and smells incredibly delicious. Whenever I walk past on my way to the gym I have to work very hard not to be lured inside! Bonus: Crave also hosts little exhibitions that show local artists work. This cafe is all about the community and giving back - they're even looking at hosting a street party sometime soon! Heard about Crave and been by on occasions but never a park available for the car. Today was the day ,a park nearby and right on lunchtime. We sat at the Big communal table with a very friendly bunch of patrons who appeared to be working. We took a while to select from a great list of option as all so appealing to us who enjoy healthy choices. My friend went for the heirloom tomato and I chose the avo and chick peas. Both very tasty ,fresh and satisfying. Didn't have coffee but must next time around with maybe a piece of very delectable looking baking. A big busy place however we were made to feel special even in the hub bub of the lunchtime rush. 25 May 19 Returned today with family for lunch and found the whole precinct buzzing. The CRAVE CAFE is beautiful, nicely tucked on the corner of Morningside Drive and Mc Donald Street a simple idea that works like a Community,even though sometimes it feels like you're an alien from another world. The staff are friendly and make you feel at home. The regular locals go about their daily business enjoying each other's company .THE FOOD itself is heavenly the last food on earth you would like to eat before you die. The chefs cook with love not because they have too its because with every mouth full it's like your Prolonging the last bite till the end. Came here for a late lunch... we have pick a seat outside as we have our dog with us , however since it's almost 2 we are quite hungry and was hoping to get our orders in , but the service is so slow. We have waited so long to order our food . And food turn out to be okay taste wise but pretty petit to what I expected. Since moving near Crave, I've heard rave reviews about the ambience and food. Finally, I was able to visit on a Friday morning with an out of town friend. Coffee was delicious. They also carry almond milk, which gets bonus points from me. Food was delectable - eggs Benedict with bacon for my friend and eggs on multigrain for me, with bacon. The multigrain bread was nutty and divine. Flavourful and cooked perfectly, as evidenced by the scraping sounds our forks made on the plates as we tried to get the last morsels of yummy. I love this place because it isn't simply another cafe, it's a collective set up by a group of neighbours who were all looking to create a better neighbourhood for them to live in. It's a charity, they don't keep any of the profits it all goes towards poverty. They also offer the walls of their cafe as a gallery space for local artists to display and sell their work. Now the cafe itself is super cool, really trendy with industrial style décor and the best part? Their tables are made out of old coffee sacks! Their coffee is great, they use supreme coffee beans which we all know taste uh-mazing. I have always received such friendly service here, I'm not sure whether the people who started the collective actually work in the cafe but either way the staff are fab. Crave doesn't just stop at coffee either, they offer smoothies and cabinet items, an all day breakfast menu and a lunch menu. As I walked up to this bustling corner Cafe in Morningside at 11am on a Sunday I was already dreading the inevitable. I was overwhelmingly intimidated by the overflowing masses of hipsters and good looking people laughing and chatting as they spilled out onto the deck and surrounding seating. It was at this point im ashamed to admit I pre judged what I anticipated to be a painful experience. What a total shock when my party of two was attended to straight away and seated within a few minutes. Attentive staff were with us instantly making us feel like we too were young, cool and relevant once again. Great food, great coffee and great conversation ensued making for a most memorable experience. This place does the best coffee in town so be warned, it may ruin you! The brunch menu is diverse and everything sampled is delicious. The cafe has a really nice vibe with a good range of seating. Love the projected menu on the wall. Most amazing to us is the speed at which the food is served. Even as a group of 5 we've never waited more than 10 min for our brunch. This is a little cute cafe in Sandringham, I've been here 2 times now! It is a very busy cafe during the weekends I've had a smoothie which was nice and their coffees are good! Went today and I ordered a banana loaf which was meant to be toasted, we returned it to get heated only to go up again five minutes later and it was forgotten in the microwave. My partners smoothie took 20 minutes to come out because the staff didn't know what table it was meant to go to (?). However they did take this off the bill which was nice. The food was delicious, coffee okay. I would struggle to return based on the bad service which is a shame. There needs to be some major changes to the table system, we didn't seem to have the same waitress either. We also noticed a lady return her coffee because it was too cold. read more

This cafe is a great hideaway in Morningside just down the road from busy Kingsland. It is owned by a cooperative who put the money back into the community, and is an excellent place for coffee, lunch, or brunch. Their food is excellent, and their coffee even better. Looks nice waited 20 mins asked twice to be served but no one bothered!!!!. Others getting served, got up and left and went to an old favourite where we got service with a smile. Gave them a second chance and just as bad. Waited again did get served but then came back to say kitchen closed for 40 mins after taking our order.
