I had caught the ferry from the Downtown Terminal in Auckland. My destination was Devonport Chocolates on Wynyard St, Devonport, solely to buy some their delicious handmade morsels. I disembarked the ferry and began meandering up the picturesque street, a mere minutes walk from the wharf. As I did, smell of food and coffee wafted towards me. Distracted from my origami purpose, I followed my nose and with rumbling tummy stepped into Lily Eatery! I had not been or even seen this establishment before, possibly because I may have mistaken the lovely cottage housing this business as a private residence. There are tables and chairs on a grassy area in front of the cafe and these were full of people enjoying their food and drink al fresco. I immediately forgot chocolate as I eyeballed their display cabinet of freshly made wraps, rolls, quiche and salads. On the wall was a menu for those prepared to wait as the kitchen fulfilled orders. But what impressed me most was the colourful and very eye catching display of plated sweets - cakes, tarts, slices and other baked goods, all freshly prepared and looking most edible!
I ordered and paid for my food at the counter and seated myself. A waiting person placed a small carafe of iced water on my table. My food was duly delivered; it did not disappoint in any way! The mocha was hot and robust, the quiche moist and flavoursome, the green salad crisp and splashed with a touch of French dressing! But it was the service that was most memorable. From the young chef who came to ask if I needed anything more, to the young lady who smiled recommended the brownie to go with my coffee. And the waiting staff - attentive and distractedly charming without being intrusive.
A great place to visit...just walk slowly and follow your nose.
