It is so home and cozy, seriously the ideal breakfast spot. The staff was super friendly and helpful with questions/allergy concerns. If the weather permits, I'd recommend snagging an outside table. I ordered the Eggs Benedict Florentine with a GF english muffin and was blown away. I can be super picky about my benedicts and was not expecting much at all. The eggs were cooked to perfection, the hollandaise was rich and tangy, and both the spinach and tomatoes were super fresh. Dipping their potatoes in the yolk/hollandaise reminisce was delish. I really made the dishwashers job easier that day, haha. Obviously one needs to get french toast or pancakes for the table. I totally get the hype around this french toast. So thick without being dry, even if you don't go the cinnamon route. Do be warned it's a lot more feeling than you might anticipate, I'd say one person won't need more than 2 slices! Added bonus: really well mixed chocolate milk.

They are planning on opening another venue down in Tylerville in a couple of months. They indicated that the menu will have different options than the current restaurant. We can't wait!

The staff there were very nice and worked hard to get our order to us quickly! There was maybe one table inside, but it was tight. There are several tables on the outside patio, so it's a great spot to sit on a nice day. There are a couple more full service breakfast spots in the area, but Brewed Awakening is a great option when you just want to grab a coffee or a quick bite!

I was driving from Hartford County to Mystic and Yelp-searched for a highly rated coffee shop near…read moremy route. Brewed Awakening stood out as having a good rating and being close to my route. Brewed Awakening does not present as a craft coffee shop focused on bean origins and things like that. It's a small, old school coffee shop, with limited inside place to sit and stand. The space is not fancy. It's more functional. But I'll tell you something . . . almost every usable inch of that space was occupied by people who seemed like long time regulars. Maybe like 5 to 6 people, but people who were happy to be there. The coffee was reasonably priced. The food, included hot dogs, donuts, breakfast sandwiches, classic sandwiches. Also reasonably priced by modern standards. There seems to be a New York connection to the shop because they use Nathan's Hot Dogs and the donuts on the counter came from New York. The woman who I assume was an owner was the only person working. She was very nice and helpful. I suspect she's a reason why they have a loyal customer base. I thought about ordering a hot dog at 8 a.m., but I had food plans in Mystic. I just ordered a Black Iced Coffee. The ice cubes were that thin round tube style with holes on the top and bottom, that you used to see a lot in restaurant fountain soda. The iced coffee itself was about average. If I just wanted a high end black iced coffee, I probably wouldn't return. I would definitely return to check out their reasonably priced food in warmer months when you can sit outside. In any event, if you're looking for a place with a lot of character, Brewed Awakening would be a good choice. It's close to the Route 9 Exit that you take on your way to the Clinton Outlets. 3.5 Stars

I do wish there were more signs, as both the parking lot and the entrance felt a bit vague and easy to miss. Once we finally found our way inside, we were pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere reminded me of another local tavern. Staffed by friendly people. The food was good, and the overall experience was enjoyable. My only disappointment was the lack of information about the history of the establishment. There is a lot of marketing that references its connection to a jailhouse on the menu, but very little information is actually shared within the tavern itself. I found myself wanting to learn more about the story behind the place. I also think it would be fun to add a photo-op area--perhaps even outdoors--with a set of mock jail bars where guests could take pictures. It would fit the theme and add a memorable touch. The tavern itself is fairly small, so I can imagine it gets quite crowded during busy times. Overall, it's definitely worth checking out.

Inside, the tables are simply yet tastefully decorated with candles throughout, creating a cozy atmosphere. Even the bathrooms were thoughtfully decorated and adorable and no detail was overlooked. They offer a great variety of seating options, including bar seating, high top tables, standard height tables, and window seating, so you can really choose the vibe you are going for. During the winter, they even have lit igloos outside so you can stay warm while sitting by the river, which is such a unique touch. My waitress was also tending bar, yet she remained prompt and attentive the entire time. She gave me space to look over the menu without making me feel rushed, but never disappeared long enough for me to wonder where she was. Even as it got busy, she handled everything seamlessly. The service was excellent. However, I honestly wish I could say the food lived up to the atmosphere, because the ambiance definitely sets high expectations. I ordered the short rib risotto and would probably give it a 6 out of 10. The risotto itself was fine but could have used more flavor, maybe something earthy like mushrooms to bring it together. The short rib was cooked well, but it lacked the depth of flavor I was hoping for. Overall, the dish did not quite come together as a cohesive plate. It was not bad by any means, it just felt like it was missing something. I also ordered the Italian Gabagool Sub with salami, capicola, mortadella, provolone, lettuce, tomato, roasted garlic, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. It had all the right components and sounded amazing on paper, but it ended up tasting fairly bland. Typically an Italian sub has bold dressings and seasoning that really make it pop, and this one just did not quite hit that mark. Honestly, the fries and pickle were probably the standout items food wise.
