I have given Cody's a few chances to redeem itself, but, it seems the owner is not interested in keeping customers.
My friend and I have breakfast together every Sunday morning, usually at Cody's because he lives in Wooster Square, as a way to escape the stresses of graduate school. The first time I went to Cody's, the service was exceptionally slow, especially given the diner was, maybe, two-thirds full. But, it was Sunday and I didn't really mind waiting. The food was what you would expect for $8 or $9, so I decided I would go back the following weekend.
That is where the problem started. After having breakfast, there were four of us that day, we went up individually to pay the bill. After I paid, I went back to my table to get my coat so I could walk home and, upon leaving the diner, I was immediately chased out by an older woman, who is a poor substitute for Tammy Faye Bakker, frenzied that I had left without paying. Thankfully, I had my receipt, so after she stopped screaming and threatening me, I was able to show her that I had, indeed, paid my tab. She threw her hands up and called me a 'stupid kid' and returned inside the diner without so much as an apology for the misunderstanding. I have never in my life been as embarrassed as I was in that moment. She made me a spectacle, being watched by other diner patrons from their window seats, even traffic slowing down to watch the unfolding one-woman-circus.
But, this morning was the last straw. I chalked up Tammy Faye's outburst to a combination of a bad morning and old age, and had been returning to Cody's every Sunday, mostly without major issue. But, this morning, my friend got there at 10:25am as our plan was to meet at 10:30. He sat in an open booth and, much like one of the other reviewers, was asked to sit at the bar to open the booth for a larger party. As he knew neither of us were in a hurry, he graciously moved to the bar to have a cup of coffee while he waited for me to get there. I arrived at the diner at about 10:45am, twenty minutes after he had arrived there. As I was walking in, he had been instructed by the waitress to take the open booth because I was there and we were going to eat. Tammy Faye, however, had other designs. After a shockingly unprofessional gesture towards my friend, she balked at the waitress' insistence that we be allowed to sit in that booth to order our breakfast. When I asked Tammy Faye why we were not able to be seated for breakfast, she proceeded to outrightly lie and say that my friend had been sitting alone in a booth since 10am and that he had, originally, refused to give up his booth for a larger party.
What is most disturbing about this experience is not so much the availability of the booths. I completely understand the logic behind not wanting a single person to occupy an entire booth, especially on a Sunday morning. But, I do not appreciate being lied to. Had Tammy Faye offered us the next available booth, I would have been perfectly happy to sit at the bar and have a cup of coffee while we waited. But, instead, she decided the best course of action was to lie about the time my friend got there to justify her unprofessional behavior.
I will not be returning to Cody's. For everyone who reads this review, my friend and I discovered this morning that Atticus offers a similarly priced, less greasy alternative for breakfast. Two egg sandwiches, four cups of coffee, and an array of toasted artisan breads with butter and a selection of jams came to under $25 in a much better atmosphere with exceptional service. Maison Mathis also offers an excellent brunch for a similar price. As a student, I do not have a lot of extra money to take myself out to eat everyday, so, when I am able to indulge myself and go out to eat, I appreciate a pleasant and agreeable dining experience. Cody's is not the place for that. read more
