Went here during restaurant week to save some money, and it was not too bad. Codex is in Norfolk by Granby Street and it serves modern American cuisine. We got to try three courses for $45 during Norfolk restaurant week. I tried the tocino skewers and they were pretty delicious. for the main entrée, I got the pork shoulder. Although they gave us a lot of food, the shoulder wasn't really flavorful and required some more seasoning when I got back home. The fettuccine was pretty good, really tasted cheesy and mushroom. Finally for dessert the olive oil cake with lemon was awesome! The toffee pudding was not sweet, even though it's caramel. Not sure if worth going again, but it was a unique experience.
Total Gem in Downtown Norfolk! Perfect for a cute date night or a girls' night out! The vibe inside is intimate and welcoming, making it the ideal spot to unwind with some great apps and drinks. The entire meal felt like an elevated eating experience. The menu is packed with unique pairings and simple yet incredibly dynamic flavors that work together perfectly.
Came into codex on a very cold January night of restaurant week and was blown away by our experience! The servers do a great job of explaining the restaurant week menu and were very open and knowledgeable about their menu. Codex itself isn't much, very much modern and industrial but still finds a way to feel warm. Our food was next. level. We really enjoyed our appetizers- the pimento cheese dip and the oyster mushrooms. I'm STILL thinking about the oyster mushrooms. Our entrees were good too! Very different in portions- I only had three scallops but my husband had a good sized steak with a PILE of fries. I was happy with my meal but something to note for sure. The sticky toffee pudding. I am speechless. Some of the best dessert I've ever had, but like that doesn't even do it justice. I can't believe we've had Codex in our neighborhood for so long and I've been sleeping on it. Don't make the same mistake as me!
Farm to table in downtown Norfolk! 4.5/5 stars overall, reservations recommended but bar seating available. Onion tart was DYNAMITE ($13, 6/5 stars) and I dislike onions; it's a must get! Thai salad was excellent ($13, 5/5 stars). Fresh ingredients including carrots, onions, cabbage, peanuts and cilantro. Brussels ($13, 6/5 stars) were top 5 all time; seriously, perfect char yet soft on the inside, with tangy and mildly sweet finish. Burgers with fingerlings were pretty good ($14+$4, 3/5 stars); I'd recommend the burger from Le Grande over theirs but it was a two patty, made to order burger. Perry was a very nice server; our apps dropped before our drinks but the gin cocktail presentation was worth it. FYI, 20% gratuity automatically included on all parties. Gender neutral bathrooms onsite. Classic parking challenges, onstreet id you can find it or pay to park garage. Indoor and hybrid outdoor (counter w 4 chairs next to sidewalk) seating;
Not our first time, and won't be our last! Stopped in for a quick date night meal before seeing a movie at the Naro. Started (after being greeted by the lovely staff!) with a Grizzlet (a gin/vodka and fruit based drink) and a Firing Squad (their take on a margarita) and both were fantastic. We weren't super hungry by the time we rolled in, so we got four apps: a delicious prosciutto and onion tart, oyster mushrooms fried tempura style, a wonderful Thai salad that my partner raved about, and some toothsome focaccia bread. All are staples of the menu and well worth it!!
Once again, Codex never disappoints. We stopped in for some cocktails and small plates before a movie. It's the perfect date night spot, intimate and delicious! Both cocktails were creative and refreshing. The four small plates/apps we shares were all great. The Thai peanut salad was SO good and probably my favorite, the fried oyster mushrooms were perfectly fried and flavorful, and the bread and butter was so well made. Don't miss this downtown Norfolk gem!!
Codex is a small, casual spot off of Granby that offers Brunch on the 1st Sunday of the month and let me tell you, if you aren't there by 9:30am waiting outside in line, you probably won't get a table when they open at 10am. Thankfully, my friend and I were able to be seated at the last two, available seats at the bar to dine in. Since the place was packed, we were encouraged to order our food and drinks at the same time. The Baklava Focaccia peaked our interest so we decided to have them bring that out first. We also decided on the Corned Beef Hash, Classic French Toast and of course, Espresso Martinis. The Baklava Focaccia was baked perfectly and paired wonderfully with the pistachios and sweet drizzle but there was a particular flavor that I tasted that I wasn't a fan of. The Corned Beef Hash was by far, the best I've ever had!!! I absolutely loved the over easy fried egg on top of the corned beef, potatoes, onions and peppers! It was perfection!!! The Classic French Toast was also just as delicious!!! Unfortunately, we were underwhelmed with the Espresso Martinis along with the size. They were served in what looked to be a miniature cup and wasn't worth $14, in our opinion. Overall, I would highly recommend stopping for brunch at Codex. The food was amazing!!! Sitting at the bar was a bit tight and the service could've been better but with how busy it was, we understood. Codex has Tuesday Pasta Nights and Wednesday Burger Nights so I plan on returning to try their other menu items as well!!!
From start to finish, this was a wonderful experience! The overall ambiance inside is very comfortable, upscale but not stiff! The wait staff were all so friendly and accommodating. The food itself was all hot and incredibly packed with flavors and came out hot. I would definitely come back for the Burger Night and take advantage of a farm to table style menu. My brother also enjoyed the cocktails and their dessert for his birthday!
Codex's Sunday Brunch was a special treat while visiting Norfolk! It only happens the first Sunday of the month. We were told it's first come first served, but now it's reservations only. They were able to accommodate us but we're on it next time!
The food is outstanding, the service is fun and friendly, and the restaurant is super cute. (only issue is parking!!! yikes!) My husband and i split two appetizers (the pork belly and the onion tart.) Both were so full of flavor and served piping hot. We could have eaten the entire tart! We split the rockfish for our main dish, and our server delightfully had it spilt on two plates for us. It, too, was hot, and it was cooked to perfection. We will definitely be back-it's perfectly located for a meal before a show at Chrysler Hall!
Once a month, there's a brunch that goes down in Norfolk on the first Sunday of each month at Codex apparently it's very popular. I heard about it while at another brunch a couple weeks prior. I was informed that it is a must go to little did I know how popular it was. They did not tell me that I should get there early to get a spot in line prior to them opening. It was a little intimidating when you arrive. The line was very long. It went down the street probably about four or five businesses. Soon as the door open, they started letting people in. It filled up very quickly. We were very lucky me and my friend that is we got the last two open seats at the bar. We started off as we typically do ordering espresso martinis. They were a little on the pricey side at $14 a glass. The glass was very small. Honestly it probably was the smallest espresso martini I've had while out enjoying espresso martinis, however it is packed with flavor! Our waiter informed us that we should order all our food at one time considering how busy it is we started our meal off with like a breakfast appetizer so we decided to try the baklava focaccia bread. It sounded extremely interesting. It tasted good. There's some sort of spice in there I can't really put my finger on it that I'm not a fan of. I had to try it though cause I am a fan of focaccia bread. I did take the leftover home and ended up turning it into a very good French toast. Moving on, I ordered the French toast typical brunch item for me to order. I also had to order the home fries and bacon. The French toast was very big portion. The bread was very large, but very good. I loved how crispy the outside was had lots of flavor. The bacon was just your average bacon nothing special. The home fries were OK, but they were on the cold side. They had peppers and onions in it which I do like which gives it a lot of flavor. While sitting at the bar, we got to chat with quite a few of the regulars that come quite frequently some of them come for dinner and some come on the weekend for brunch. They really enjoy the vibe there. They also love the food I was told I need to go back and try their burger night and their pasta tonight so they're on my radar to go back so look out for another review when I go back for burger night which is coming very soon. So if you're wondering if I'll go back again to this place, of course I will. I have to try their burger night. .
Codex gives a great culinary experience. The atmosphere is very calm and inviting. I came here with a friend. Our app of choice was the scallion funnel cake which was unique and very tasty. I chose the steak frites as my entree and those were some of the best fries I've ever had. The steak was cooked perfectly and came with a decadent butter on top. Finally we shared the sticky toffee pudding for dessert and all I can say is wow! Definitely up there for dessert in the area. My only request would be more ice cream on top. My friend and I really enjoyed our dinner here. It was a great treat.
This was by far the best experience of my visit to Norfolk. Everything from ambiance & service to food was stellar. I was in with a group of five and we were able to be setup with a last minute reservation. Our server was top notch! I wish I caught her name to give her a proper shout out. On arrival, she brought some wines for our group to taste and quickly had us setup with drinks. Since we were lucky to catch restaurant week, we sampled our way around the price fixe menu. We ordered a house made focaccia for the table and it was well enjoyed. Beyond that we had brussels and the prosciutto onion tart. The tart was excellent! A great touch of savory and sweet. For the main entree, I can't speak highly enough about the spaghetti and clams. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce was light while flavorful. We had all of the three desserts on offer and the table agreed that the olive oil cake was best! But of course, everything was a delight. I highly recommend Codex and I will definitely be returning next time I'm in Norfolk.

This was an amazing dining experience in every way possible. All of the food was top notch, creative, delicious, and executed to perfection. I'll start with the highlight. The Duck breast was probably the best duck dish I've ever had. The fat was slowly-rendered, making the skin unbelievably crispy and delicious, while the meat was still cooked a perfect medium temp. The accompanying vegetable medley was also really nice. My wife ordered the pork schnitzel, which was also cooked wonderfully with a crispy and tasty exterior without any dryness at all in the inside. The lemon caper sauce was also delicious, and the spinach salad on top was a nice touch. For dessert, we lucked out that they had a last minute replacement, because the chocolate-orange sponge cake was amazing. I rarely get excited about desserts, but this one was so special, we ordered an additional one to take home for tomorrow. Codex did everything flawlessly tonight. Their wine selection is excellent, with many quality choices in my public schoolteacher's budget. The service was also perfect: friendly, welcoming, well-informed and attentive. Our server Isaiah was really great, and the whole staff worked very well as a team. The atmosphere was comfortable, casual, and classy with any hint of pretentiousness. This was our first visit to Codex, but it certainly won't be our last. This is one of the very finest restaurants in the 757!!!! read more

Chef Ian Hock formerly of Shiptown and Esoteric opened Codex in mid January and is the Executive Chef. The restaurant shares space with Pendulum Fine Meats in the Ghent area of Norfolk. The hype has been strong after a soft opening in mid January. The business has its own parking, but it rarely seems to be enough. Off street parking is permitted on Shirley Ave. The lot on the few occasions I've visited has been clear of debris. The space is quiet and cozy with a long table in the center of the room that can seat 8-10. Diners most likely will share in a family style manner. A few other two seater tables are available. The building is old, maybe 1920's and provides a nice setting on the first floor. Wood floors and tall windows with crimson colored walls. The joint definitely has a warm atmosphere and is better suited to adults in my opinion. A huge refrigerated case contains beer and wine. The craft beer selection is excellent. My waitresses Stephanie and Kaitlin were helpful with recommendations and friendly the entire night. Even though I arrived 30 minutes prior to close I never felt rushed. Check-in and clearing was done after each course. Water refills were slow at times. My order...Main course / Pork Shoulder / salsa rojo, cilantro lime slaw, peanut. Paired w/ a Black Ridge Cabernet. The pork was so tender a knife was not required. The price point of $19 bargain. Scrumptious and 5 stars. First course / Chicken Liver Tart / pistachio crust, reisling glee. This was incredible and light. This could have been dessert. I loved it! 5 stars. Second course / Farroto / anson mills farro, mushrooms, ramps, carrots, peas, parmesan. The bowl had such depth a pop to each layer. A creative and well thought out dish that was a highlight. 5 stars. Dessert / Flourless coconut cake / chocolate ganache, sea salt & whipped cream. The presentation seemed off, but no denying the amazing taste. The strong coconut flavors with chocolate made this a memorable treat. 4/5 stars. As I finished off my glass of wine the owner of Pendulum Dylan sat beside me with his daughter. It was great to see his smiling face and reminded me I'm overdue to visit his quality meat shop. My bill was brought to me and processed without delay. I popped in the men's room located on the street side of the room. I found it clean with proper supplies. Hours Wed-Sat 630-10. It was a pleasure seeing you again Chef Hock and your hospitality was greatly appreciated. read more

Ate here for the first time. The food was excellent, I learned something new about the cuisine on the menu. The service was great! The waitress was so polite and suggested dishes that were superb. The ambiance was perfect for dinner. read more

After reading the reviews we chose this place for my husband's birthday dinner. Service was good with friendly staff. But in a place this small do you really need a receptionist, floor manager, two waitresses plus a bartender? Small menu is fine. Unique items and those that we had were tasty. But the thing that we found irritating was adding the 20% gratuity for a table of 2. We normally tip 20% but don't feel it should be forced on us or anyone else. read more

I'm so grateful I discovered this Norfolk GEM! The atmosphere is adorable - a downtown house with exposed brick. The food was INCREDIBLE. I ordered the brussel sprouts and the mushroom risotto. Both were cooked to perfection and packed with flavor. My friends ordered burgers and after one bite, I was sold. We were busy talking and enjoying ourselves, but according to our server, we had to wait a few minutes longer than usual to get our food. Even though we didn't complain (or for that matter even notice!), our server brought us a FREE dessert. The dessert was so damn good we ordered a second. I absolutely love this spot and would highly recommend! I'm going to return soon to try more menu items. read more
The service at this place was amazing! Highlights were definitely the schnitzel and the sticky toffee pudding. My husband and I both said the schnitzel need a side of lemon for another of acid. It had lettuce on top and it they had more acid or the sauce covered more than it would have been perfect. The sticky toffee pudding not pictured was so good my hubby said only one bite but we cleared the plate. The wine selections we tried the cab, the Pinot noir, and some kombucha sort of funk wine, were all just okay. Honestly, they should do a Noah River Pinot. I'd either go alcohol free or try cocktails next time. The cauliflower was interesting with Sous vide and curry and mint and yogurt sauce. It make me want to sous the cauliflower and try different spices. I also liked the pickled Serrano. I'd come back again to try more veggie plates. The black truffle pasta was 8 gnudi. It was more herby with huge pieces of dill and parsley than black truffles. For $28, It wasn't really a strong black truffle flavor. The sauce also seemed too thin. The gnudi were perfectly acceptable, just not craveable. I find most of my black truffle dishes are so good and I want to go back and have more. This dish was a never order a black truffle dish from here again. I preferred the cheaper dishes. read more

We made reservations for two on a Saturday night. We walked in and were promptly seated and greeted by our server. I cannot say enough great things about the service here. Everyone is very attentive. My wife and I ordered drinks and the pimento cheese to start. 10/10 would order this again- they sell the amazing house made crackers to take home as well! For our main course I ordered the harissa half chicken and my wife ordered the pork shoulder and then we got crispy Brussels to split. We wanted to try so many things on the menu! Online the chicken dinner was to be served with root veggies. It showed up without them. I asked our server about it and showed her the online menu. She was fast to grab the manager and figure it out. I guess the change hadn't been properly updated online. They brought me root veggies as a side anyhow which I really appreciated however they were incredibly under cooked and flavorless and I thought maybe they were last minute rushed due to my inquiry. My chicken was so salty and dry. I had trouble eating it and ended up leaving most of it on the plate which really bummed me out. I learned it was prepared sous vide which Is a style I personally do not care for. I wish that had been added to the plate description on the menu as I would not have ordered it. My wife's plate was absolute perfection. Everything was so good. THOSE BRUSSELS. I could have just made those my dinner honestly. Because I didn't eat much of my actual dinner we sprung for dessert. The sticky toffee pudding was toe curling good. The toffee wasn't overly sweet and the cream was fresh. Such a unique dish and so delicious! Overall, I do find this place to be a bit pricey it it's great for a casual date night spot and the staff are so wonderful. We will return for sure! read more

Codex is a quaint little spot, and during the day it is Pendulum. It was so neat to see how Codex transforms the space in the evening, to a higher end dinner spot. The staff was super kind and amazing, and seated us right away - due to us having reservations ahead of time (which I highly recommend). The spot is extremely small, and the tables are VERY close together, so it is very easy to hear conversations that are not at your own table. Also, there is a community style seating as well - where you can sit with folks who you may not know. My husband and I opted for a two top table, which was much more preferable for our date night. The food was decent. I ordered the Salmon entree, which was pretty good - the Salmon was on a bed of assorted vegetables - tomatoes, radish, cucumber - it was a perfect light salad that's perfect for summer. Also, their homemade sourdough croutons were absolutely delicious. My husband, ordered the ribeye special, and he stated that it was just OK. The sauce that was used was a bit sweeter than he preferred, and his veggies were served on top of the steak - which is typically not traditional when dining at a standard chophouse. The cook on the steak was great - but the pairings were a tad off. We ordered the creme brûlée for dessert and it was very good! Also, the wine selection for the evening was solid - we ordered the Michael Shaps Cabernet Sauvignon, and that's always a winner for us. We'll maybe return in the future, but our first visit did not blow us away. For the price and how much we spent that evening, we were a tad underwhelmed on our overall experience. read more

New favorite for a special night out. The vibe is upscale industrial hipster in an intimate dining room. The food is imaginative. The service was excellent in every way. If unsure what to order, the server has great suggestions and can recommend wine pairings, which is unusual to find. Will definitely be back. read more

A perfect date night spot! By day, you can tell it's a deli which makes the evening atmosphere feel casual but classy. I personally felt the vibe wouldn't be out of place in Brooklyn, New York. I wore jeans and a blazer and didn't feel underdressed but if you wanted to wear something dressier you wouldn't be overdressed either. There is a mix of communal and private tables. We shared a table with 2 other couples and it was wonderful. If you'd like a private table, I think you just need to ask. The menu was straightforward and broken into 3 "chapters". We started with the burrata and ravioli. The burrata was served warm with fresh bread and topped with arugula, garlic and olive oil. It was a good size and easy to share. The ravioli was a special for the night and very good. They were stuffed with mushrooms over a reduction with apples. For the main dishes we tried the boneless short rib and the rockfish. Both were good portion sizes and delicious! The short rib was cooked perfectly and was very tender. The rockfish filet was about the size of a salmon filet and served over sweet potatoes. I wouldn't have thought of this pairing but it totally worked. We can't wait to come back and bring friends! read more
Finally had dinner here on Valentine's Day and it was wonderful. The atmosphere is so intimate and to be honest, a tiny bit crowded but I didn't mine. We had our own table but you may be seated at a communal table. We had the burrata to start and it was wonderful. It's served with toasted bread that is soaked in olive oil. It's crunchy but soft and melts in your mouth. I almost think I liked the bread more than the burrata! For dinner I had the boneless short rib with celeriac purée and confit potatoes. The short rib was cooked perfectly, very tender and the potatoes had the perfect snap but were cooked through. I liked the celeriac purée but my boyfriend didn't care for it. With dinner we had a bottle of Tempranillo that was only $20! We didn't finish the bottle and we're able to take it home. If you get a class of wine here, definitely split a bottle because it's so affordable. The server also told me they sell most of the bottles on their menu during the day at Pendleton. So I'll be back for it! read more

To be honest, this is my favorite restaurant. I've moved nine times and have never been to a restaurant that is so constantly incredible. Every single dish I've been served at Codex was memorable to say the least. Everything has been so perfect, it would be pointless to review every dish I've had. However, the pimento dip with the everything crackers is a noteworthy staple of the menu and you owe it a try. Take my advice and try this place next time you want a fancy but casual dinner, or go on a Thursday and get the burger deal: $10 for a burger and a beer. It's a fantastic burger and they've got a nice beer list. You can't go wrong here read more

Wow. Been here 3 times since they've opened the new spot and I'm never disappointed. First off, the atmosphere is like something reminiscent of a fun restaurant you'd find off the street in NYC which I love. Just a totally classy but laid back energy and I love it. First off is the great service. Everyone is so nice that has sat us, brought us drinks, etc. However, if you are lucky enough to get Bri as a server then you're in for a real treat! Somehow we have gotten her all 3 times dining here and we are so lucky! She remembers our common drink orders, my boyfriend's shellfish allergy, and even some of our food orders. She's always great at pointing out what's amazing on the menu & just never disappoints. She also is wonderful with not making us feel rushed to order and talks with us like humans rather than robotic servers that seem uninterested or fake. She's the best!! Menu is small but items are changed frequently which is great! I love a small menu because usually everything is so perfected compared to a huge menu of mediocrity. The best thing on the menu by far (IMO) is the Brussels. I order two orders each time because I could literally drink the sauce out of the bowl. I've never had better Brussels in my life- you will NOT be disappointed. Same goes for the Sticky Toffee Pudding. If you do not order this- you haven't experienced this restaurant lol. Even if you have to take it to go and eat it at home- ORDER. I have dreams about the date cake they serve it over. Anyways we will definitely be back. read more

I truly wanted this place to work being it's walking distance from my apt. I was Interested to try the food after seeing the Incredible reviews. I booked a 5pm reservation and walked in at 5:01 lol. Extremely excited for this experience being I'm a chef as well and can appreciate a fellows chefs plating skills that looks like art! The drink I order was ok. The service was Incredible! I ordered the steak and Demi glacé with the delicious burger and potatoes. The steak was YUMMY! A bit salty for my liking but tender and a good cut! Took the remainder of my food home, which is when the disaster happened... The burger was Tasty yet missing something--Then bam, a hair imbedded in my meat :( Thought it was mine, truly until I looked closer-- Impossible to be mine. Again, as a fellow chef, I understood how it got there and that truly pissed me off knowing there's no hair nets being worn or proper measure to ensure food was handled to the best of its ability. read more

Codex opened in mid-January this year as the new pop-up restaurant located inside Pendulum Fine Meats, They are currently open in the evenings from Wednesday through Saturday from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm. Their executive chef, Ian Hock, has previously worked at a number of highly regarded restaurants, including Terrapin, Esoteric, and Shiptown. The name of the restaurant was derived from his late father's art collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Chef Hock's creations utilize locally sourced produce and ingredients as much as possible, and he has his own aspirations of eventually moving into a brick and mortar location. Their menu, which makes slight changes each week, is divided into three sections labeled as Chapters. Chapter I is devoted to their starters. Chapter II is devoted to plant based dishes. Chapter III is devoted to meat centric entrees. A dessert menu is offered at the end of your meal. I have tried the following so far: CHICKEN LIVER TART: With Pistachio Crust and Riesling Gelee. This is a Chapter I starter and one I would have never tried if I had not heard so many rave reviews. Chicken livers have never agreed with me, and I usually spit them out when they accidentally get into my mouth. This one was a game changer for me. It delivered a subtly sweet flavor and rich texture that oozed with a delicious and decadent taste. Its combination with the pistachio crust and Riesling gelee was sheer culinary magic. My Rating: 5 Stars. ROCKFISH: With Squash Puree, Black Garlic, and Kale. This Chapter III dish was ordered during my first visit. The rockfish was succulent and delicious, fine tuned even further with the notes from the black garlic. The kale imparted a fresh and refreshing taste and texture. The squash puree was flavorful but a bit lukewarm. My Rating: 4 Stars. BOLOGNESE: Beef Heart and Ground Pork With Rigatoni and Micro Parmesan. This was another Chapter III dish and one that exploded with an intensely delicious homemade medley of flavors. The beef heart and ground pork combined beautifully with the rigatoni and parmesan. I can't remember enjoying a more profoundly flavorful bolognese dish. My Rating: 5 Stars. HALF CHICKEN: With Greens, Radicchio, and Chimichurri Sauce. This was another winner from Chapter III. The chicken was roasted with a delicately crispy skin, coating the most succulent and juicy chicken meat I've had in some time. The addition of the Chimichurri sauce formed a remarkable taste combination. The greens and radicchio provided a nice contrast of flavors and texture. This dish would have paired nicely with their Potato Pave, which I will try during a future visit. In any event, I still had enough left over to take home and enjoy for a second meal. My Rating: 5 Stars. Service has been friendly, efficient, and accommodating. Chef Ian Hock greeted me during each of my visits and checked up on me during my meals. During my future visits, if still on their menu, I would like to try their Beef Carpaccio from Chapter I, their Roasted Cauliflower from Chapter II, their Butcher Steak with Potato Pave from Chapter III, and one of their desserts. Codex is a most welcome addition to the Ghent dining scene. Loving the pop up restaurant life. We both had the butcher steak just because the menu is quite limited but that's to be expected. The butcher steak cooked med rare and it was cooked precisely to order and it was delicious and the servings size is perfect. The potatoes were a good compliment to the steak. We ordered a side of Brussels (enough for 2 people to share) and they were great as well( the sauce was on the sweet side but it was fine). The service was excellent. Zero complaints. read more

How often is brunch offered and do they require reservations?
Brunch is the first Sunday of each month. Brunch is walk in only, no reservations. For regular dinner service, reservations are recommended and available via Resy.
Bar seating at restaurant?
There is not a bar... one large communal table and limited seating BUT this place is worth checking out! Food is superb! And great beer selection!
