We decided to try a new place while we were in town - glad we did!…read more The place has a bit of an upscale vibe but folks were dressed from dressed up to somewhat casual. Our server was Sublany and she was awesome. Very personable and her recommendations were spot on. We decided to start with the Calamari with sun dried amogio. The calamari were large and prepared perfectly. The sun dried amogio was amazing - great flavor and some heat - the perfect pairing with the calamari. Great start! We tried the soup of the day which was something we'd never heard of much less eaten. It was a green bean soup - the beans were puréed with cream, some cheese and red pepper flakes. We weren't sure how it would taste by Sublany highly recommended it so we went for it. It was really good - the flavor was subtle but great; nice and creamy. We would definitely order it again. For our entrees my wife tried the salcicce which was pappardelle, fennel sausage, roasted red bell pepper, marinara, caprino and red pepper flakes. It was also very good - the pasta was prepared perfectly and the flavors all worked very well - another hit. I selected the lamb chops which were frenched lollipops, blue cheese cream and an arugula salad. The chops were perfectly prepared and the blue cheese cream on top was amazing - made very good chops excellent. The arugula salad also had a great flavor. I would also order this again. For dessert we decided to share a Hand Pie which was an apple pie with caramel drizzle and ice cream. The texture of the dough was great and the apples had a great cinnamon flavor which worked well with the caramel drizzle and the vanilla ice cream. This place was great! I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a bit more upscale than the run of the mill restaurants!

GREAT LITTLE PLACE! Overall first impressions....it was a…read morelittle hard to find the front door. We parked in the back and walked through the back patio and were escorted by a very friendly server who knew the history of the building (impressed). She led us to the front door. Then we had to climb some very steep stairs. For the average individual it wasn't bad. But we had two seniors with us that found the steps challenging. Once inside we were greeted by the hostess and a very not so good odor (we almost walked out, it smelled musty and very old, our thoughts were the bathrooms. These need to be renovated badly). But once you get into the dining room there was no more smell. Tino was our server for the evening he did an amazing job. We ordered classic pasta (honestly it had good flavor but the sauce was very watery), the Duck (that was very good), and the Prime Rib (that was huge, that would be perfect for two people). We finished dinner and proceeded to go outside to the patio (mind you this is in January, when the weather is perfect for sitting el fresco) and had dessert. We ordered the Banana's Foster (Santana did an excellent performance, best part of the dessert) or Platanos Cajeta (huge difference) and the Flan. They were both good. This was a Saturday night and they had a duet playing acoustic guitar music (this helped top off the evening). We ended up spending a good amount of time here and enjoyed each other's company in a very nice atmosphere. Will definitely be revisiting.

I have been to McAllen TX ... and have even eaten there (1 of 2)…read more This is yet another one of those places you've been to or experiences you've had that seem sort of surreal because you would have never imagined being here. I was in McAllen for a day or two when I spent some time on South Padre Island. Enter Sweet Paris Creperie and Cafe. It's in what seems to be the area's biggest shopping mall and on the side closest to the 2 Expressway and its frontage road, and very close to the airport. I went in one evening and the mall was hopping. You will immediately see this understated store and restaurant ... a French creperie. (I don't remember where to put the circonflexe, accent grave, and accent aigu from 3 years of Catholic high school French, nor am I going to look for them on the keyboard.) So, while a little different from the other chain goings-on in this area, Sweet Paris is tastefully decked out. Crepes tend to be slightly expensive in general. It's all about marketing ... I'm going to sell you something "French" and charge a little more for it. However, I was very hungry. I would be ordering 2 crepes - a dinner crepe with chicken and a dessert crepe with Nutella. Both of the crepes were very good. They offer quite a few options on their menu. From the photos, I saw that they have these "nifty" coffees with a foam design shaped like the Eiffel Tower, but I would not be partaking later in the evening. The service was good. Most people in the Rio Grande Valley tend to be more polite than in most American places I've lived or visited. The interior is very clean and inviting and you should definitely eat in. The mall is so popular, which is a good thing these days, that I had to go out toward the edge of the parking lot to get a space. There was also one of those "blue lights" (not as in a "blue light special") positioned in the parking lot ... and I don't see those too often. Like everything else in this area, things and places are spacious and spread out. But let me get back to Sweet Paris Creperie and Cafe. The crepes here were the real deal. Again, they were indeed good. I also like that, in this smaller urban area, they offer a unique concept like this, hence I'm going with 4 stars for this restaurant.
