I arrived at the Lafrenaie location inside the Roaster's which has its own entrance on Atwater Ave on my sister's birthday. Moreover, I was looking for a last minute cake. All the while FaceTiming my mom and sending pictures of cakes to my brother in law, Roxanne waited and smiled patiently and even chipped in with recommendations. We finally came to an agreement and she offered to personalize the cake and asked me if I was going to eat it that evening or the next day because the strawberries would be frozen . She went in the back and replaced all the frozen berries on top pf the cake for fresh ones so that we could enjoy it the same day. She went above and beyond and exceeded my expectations. The Tonkotsu Black had a rich broth with prominent garlic oil. The Tonkotsu+ was really the show stopper. With 3 different styles of meat: Smoked pork pastrami, meatballs & chashu. The truffle oil was fragrant and earthy. But the biggest surprise was shiitake mushrooms. They were marinated/seasoned to perfection, with a hint of sweetness. The Long Version: My husband and I came here for dinner on a Friday night. The restaurant was packed. We snagged the last table available. The restaurant is in the heart of the Concordia University area and we were the only people in the restaurant, other than staff, not of typical university age. Lol. We both got soup dumplings. I got the juicy pork ones ($10.99 for 10) and my husband got the pork and shrimp ones ($14.99 for 10). They were a good size. The dumpling skin was a bit thicker than at other places and maybe a bit tougher too. That did make them hold the soup in better though, lol. They were tasty, but similar in tastiness to other dumpling restaurants we've been to in Montreal (that were less busy and even cheaper). I expected them to be better due to their popularity, but I still enjoyed them. Service was pleasant and efficient. Decor is casual. There are steps down to enter the restaurant.
