I tend to frequent this place quite often so this review is more general based than off my last experience. The rooftop bar is cool and can be lit at times like when they have events going on. The facility is narrow so it can get pretty crowded up there when they have a big name dj in the house. The drinks are good, flavorful and strong and the staff is always super cool. They sometimes host big parties and have the alley blocked off which really gets this placed packed when they close up the alleyway. If you stay up to date with their Instagram then you will find out about their events which every one I've been to has been super fun. An alternative to other rooftop locations, which offer drinks, food and a gorgeous view of the ocean at sunset. But beyond the view, I can't find another reason to return. The service was painfully slow and incompetent. The music was too loud to have a pleasant conversation (no one was dancing), and the food took quite a while to arrive. We ordered the Jerk Chicken Taco plate with rice and beans. The tacos, came out first, and a several minutes later, we got the rice & beans. While we where waiting, some of the servers where at the back of the bar chatting away, while another was busy handing out awful tasting shots, served in tiny little plastic medicine cups (the shot tasted like a mixture of Jägermeister and nyquil). I get that they are trying to create a spring break, liquor-bomb, body shot, type of vibe (take a look at their website), but that doesn't mean that the service needs to suffer . . . does it? In addition to all that, Cococabana tacks on a 5% 'Living Wage surcharge' to every check. What the hell is that? At least they give you an option to have it removed from the bill. Unfortunately, the service was so slow, that we were't going to wait any longer to have that nonsense removed from the bill. It's a one-and-done for us, I'm afraid. This restaurant is hands down one of Oceanside's top spots. No one can convince me otherwise! My husband and I visited a couple of weeks ago while on vacation and had an absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. Our server, Sophia, was incredibly knowledgeable about the cocktails and gave thoughtful recommendations based on my preferences. She suggested the Caribe Welcome, which was delicious, and the nachos were just as impressive, filling and full of flavor. She also recommended several spots around the area, which really made our trip and helped us feel like locals. Also, probably freshly, if that, 21 year old server decided we had two drinks and were ready to go. She dropped off the check without a word when we were ready to order another (both of us are locals and not driving, also we were stone sober so no, if you're wondering, we weren't unruly or anything,) so we felt rushed out and left to go downstairs instead. Maybe there was a shift change? But then tell us that and I'm happy to close. Instead, my first impression was feeling so unwelcome that I'm actually taking the time to even type this review out. This place has such a super cute tropical aesthetic and the rooftop bar has pretty good views of the beach! Making reservations online was super easy and we were seated right away upon arrival. The seating was a little awkward (we were a group of 4) with not a lot of leg room but the couches were so cute it was worth it. The atmosphere was lively and fun with a live DJ and we ordered the Havana cocktail. It came in a cute giant flamingo cup and our waiter warned us that the drink had 3 cocktails worth of alcohol (I felt like this drink had way more alcohol than that!) It had a sweet grapefruit taste with a slight vodka aftertaste, which was very addicting. This place is a MUST visit. It's adorable from the moment you see it on the street. The elevator is so nice lol and then you go to the rooftop bar and bam! Adorable! Our group of 5 visited the Cococabana on a Sunday evening. Immediately upon entering, I noticed my feet sticking to the floor, which truly portended the evening ahead of us. After being seated directly in front of the speaker system (which was exceptionally loud and led to complaints from other patrons until it was finally turned down), we realized that the seating and "table" were woefully inadequate. We were, in essence, crammed together on an undersized padded couch and various seats no bigger than tiny barstools. The "table" itself was no more than about a 15" radius platform and nowhere near big enough to put our drinks down, let alone food. As for the food itself, words cannot express my utter disappointment (though I will try). Everything on the menu is simultaneously overpriced, undersized, and lacking in flavor, creativity, and presentation. I ordered the shrimp, and what I received was four shrimp (the ones with the heads and eyes still attached) with no sides, etc. (again, THIRTY-TWO DOLLARS for four normal-sized shrimp and nothing else). My friends fared no better. For example, my husband ordered the tenderloin skewers. The meat itself was chewy and flavorless and was accompanied by potato/hash fries that were so dry that he thought he was chewing on tree bark. Astoundingly, the restaurant also charges a 5% surcharge for God knows what, before you even get to tipping the server. We ended up walking out hungry and $300 poorer. Our server was, at best, inattentive and, more accurately, entirely absent from our excursion. She received a 20% tip based on our pre-conceieved notion of social convention, not because of anything she did. Finally, the restaurant gets 2 stars, instead of 1, because: (1) the ambiance is kind of cool, and (2) the drinks were very strong (which, in retrospect, helped us tolerate the overall feeling of being supremely ripped off). In sum, I cannot recommend the Cococabana, and we will not be returning. There are various rooftop restaurants in the downtown Oceanside area with better food, service, and views that are more economically practical. read more

We visited with a group total of 6 for my sisters birthday and had a reservation. The views looked beautiful so we had high hopes of a great brunch. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst experiences I have had a restaurant in a long time. I have already reached out to the restaurant over a week ago and still have not heard back which is why I am forced to now write this review. After ordering our meal and receiving it no one was given utensils. After requesting napkins and utensils we were only given 2 and told someone would bring us more. 10 plus minutes went by and still no utensils were given. We asked our waitress and she said "I'll give them another 2 minutes and if they don't come I'll try to hunt them down". Another 5 min goes by and we finally received the additional 4 napkins and rentals. At this point all of our food was cold and no one has been asked if we needed more water or even drinks replenished. Two of us split the tri tip breakfast burrito and it was truly unedidble. There were huge thick pieces of meat that were chewy and between the cold eggs and the meat we did not eat it. Our friend had the breakfast toast and the egg at that point had wilted the lettuce and was also not good to eat. We received our bill and asked to be refunded for the breakfast burrito and breakfast toast since we did not have napkins or silverware to eat them with (both of which was necessary since the meat was huge and fatty and unable to be eaten in a normal bite. We were told over 10 min later that we could only get 1/2 off since "technically you can eat this without utensils". We were also told at this point of a 25% gratuity already charged to each of our 3 bills (each couple had a bill). When making the reservation and on the menu this charge was never mentioned, we felt this was unfair since the service was below par. This was also on top of an already 4% surcharge. After waiting even longer to finally get our cards back all of us girls were starving to actually get food and service else where. I called the restaurant two days in a row but they are not open Mondays and did answer on Tuesday. I also left this same message on their Contact Us page of their website and it's been over a week with no response. I worked in the food industry for a long time and honestly this was one of the only times I've ever had to request a refund and also the only time it was actually denied. Had our waitress checked on us or even cared to ensure we were able to eat our food we might have just asked for another menu item but the staff was having their own food time and did not care about paying customers who just wanted to celebrate a birthday on a nice day. We expect and deserve better when the bill is so high and the food quality and service is so poor. Know better, do better. Two stars: the view was pretty read more

The Cococabana is located on top of The Brick Hotel in downtown Oceanside. It is a great addition to the O'side Drink Scene and allows for its patrons to partake in some nice bites with decadent drinks, all while enjoying a sweeping view of Downtown O; typically with a breathtaking sunset. I like coming here for their Taco Tuesdays. They've got a nice menu selection that is filled with jerk chicken, jerk octopus and a cauliflower taco that are all memorable. The tacos range from $3 to $6 and while they are "street taco" size, the flavor array is truly pronounced and stand out amongst any other "typical" taco. They also have drink specials, with margaritas and other cocktails for $7. Typically, throughout the week this is a nice place to go for that intimate date if you sit in the back. , north corner. But normally, if there's a crowd, it tends to get noisy up front where it faces the streets, South side. Their other menu will be considered "pricey" to most locals and although their cocktails are great, they fall into that category as well; even though they aren't as expensive as other rooftop locations. So, overall, this is a great place to go celebrate an occasion or maybe go on a date, but maybe not as your "run of the mill" watering hole. I still recommend experiencing them at least once when in Downtown Oceanside. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. I came here for an ugly sweater event and was extremely disappointed in the lack of decorations. Some staff members were really sweet and welcoming, while others were rather rude and seemed like we were bothering them. The elevator had a very foul odor that really made entering an awful experience. As for the event, there was suppose to be drinks specials and again....was expecting it to be festive, but sadly they weren't . There was also suppose to be a contest for best ugly sweater, but never heard anything about a winner. I was excited when I had heard about this event, but felt completely let down by the outcome.
