Just stopped by for the first time and was impressed by the large selection of bagged whole coffee beans. So many flavors it was hard to choose what to get. This is hands down the best coffee shop in Durham! Not only does it have great coffee, but it's over all a great local business that I'm so happy to be supporting. The coffee menu has your typical fare- lattes, iced coffee, espresso. However, they also have some equally unique and tasty drinks like their shipping chocolates. My usual go to is their iced coffee, and I find that the coffee is always high quality. It never tastes bitter or watered down! In addition to coffee, this location sells pastries from local bakeries. The selection is always good and they even have a section of discounted pastries from the day before. This location has a small parking lot, including a few spots reserved for coffee pick up. The shop itself is small, but they have definitely optimized the seating with sofas, chairs, and tables. The best coffee I've had in Durham, by a long shot. I swung by Cocoa Cinnamon for a study session and tried their maple pecan latte off the fall drink menu. We liked the Matcha latte and ice cream w/ Churro we had on the last visit many months ago. We didn't return because this rather abrupt blah server took it upon herself to add a $3.50 tip which we only noticed once we left. That has never happened in any establishment in my life. My daughter did want to return recently and I was skeptical, but like some of the reviewers said the quality of some items & the experience turned out to be subpar. The Iced Chai Latte was one of the blandest ones I ever had from any coffee bar. I only tasted the milk and politely asked if I could have a little more of the Chai spice. I didn't want to bother them so I just tried to improve on it w/ cinnamon & cocoa powder & some honey-like liquid at the station. My daughter had to add sweetener to her Matcha which she said had zero honey in it & she mistakenly only located granulated sugar & that left her sipping crunch granules. Then the ice cream & churro was totally downsized from the normal sized portion we had had before . The scoop was like a rounded tablespoon full and the churro was skinny?! & unremarkable. It was served on a large oval platter unlike the tall Cup we had before... It looked lost on the large plate. Before we even took it away to our table , puzzled, I asked if we could have a standard scoop of ice cream. I think it was the same woman who added her own tip in the last time & w/ devil may care attitude said, No, that is how we serve it. I said well it was an actual scoop when we were here last with .....she said , we don't do that anymore. Great place to stop by for a drink and get some work done! The place itself isn't huge and most of the seating is on sofas, and there's only one real large table. Be prepared to sit with strangers! The parking lot also isn't huge so you may need to pay for street parking nearby. The wifi was great while I was there but there was a sign that said it gets turned off at 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays. I had the durm fog as well as a butter croissant, and both were great. They've gone from selling coffee from a bike (it's on display at their Chapel Hill Rd. location) to three local brick-and-mortar operations with a good following. This is the original location offering coffee, tea, pastries, sipping chocolates and specialty drinks. There are a lot of people hanging out in groups or working on their laptops. I understand they do cut off the wifi after a certain time on weekend nights (somewhat controversial) to encourage more conversation and connectedness. They've also attracted the occasional out-of-town celebrities performing at DPAC or the Carolina Theatre. This is my favorite coffee shop in the triangle. There is great outdoor seating that is quite picturesque on a sunny day. The best coffee (in my opinion) is the Syrian Spice (it comes iced) the flavor is so unique and refreshing. The coffee is high quality so $4 for a 20 oz is worth it to me. The staff is also really nice and knowledgable about their product. The atmosphere is very chill and a great place to study or catch up with a friend. The coffee should drip, not the condescension. 1. Very simply, they're racist. I've personally witnessed multiple counts of subtle and, often, overt racist behavior towards brown people. 2. I was SO appreciative to get a really good cup of tea here, I got the sencha green tea brewed perfectly for me here at the Gear St. CocoCinnamon location. Not sure if I got lucky with good staff, but I will definately be back . Local drinks & treats in a hipster hangout, good spot for a rainy day. I enjoyed my brownie & cocoa with coconut milk. Plus for having alternatives for those of needing it. My visit was on a rainy day with the mood just right for sweet treats. I like the eclectic furniture and the hipster vibe is fine. If you're a traveler you know how to just be chill and fit in anywhere. I lived in NYC so this place was fine for a small city. The kublal khan drink was a more nutty chocolate with coconut milk and not super sweet. That was fine with me, more hints of flavors of ginger, vanilla and cinnamon, subtle seasoning. Being a non-coffee, non-tea person, it is so hard for me to find a place that serves these many variants of hot chocolate and good ones at that! I absolutely love their hot chocolates as well as their sipping chocolates. I don't often go to this particular location but, on one of the cold fall evenings, I went there for a cup of hot cocoa. I got the traditional kakawas with macadamia milk and it was perfect for me. I also got the ginger molasses cookie and it went well with my hot chocolate. I am giving this place four stars because of the wait time. After I placed the order, it took forever to come out. The place was packed but there were still enough baristas. I would avoid this place during peak hours on weekends and stick to their Lakewood location where the service is much faster. During a quick whirlwind tour of Dham on a cold rainy night, I stopped in the well-acclaimed Cocoa Cinnamon looking for just that! It was too late for coffee but I needed something warm. Small foyer up front opens up an l-shaped coffee bar with a galvanized tin facing. Baristas in back doing espressos and pour-overs, garage doors on the side and a plethora of Durham hipsters banging away on their Macbooks and chilling out. Cocoa and Cinnamon has a really interesting menu of coffee, tea and cacao based drinks, I go with a hot cocoa, non-dairy and I can't even remember the name. But it was cool and foreign. It takes 10 minutes but I get a nice ceramic cup full of chocolatey goodness spiked with anise and other spices. Takes a while to get used to the chew of ingredients (and yeah, I had to chew through the drink) but it's definitely flavorful and interesting. I can see Cocoa Cinnamon being a cool hang-out spot with its wifi, interesting drinks and pastries for those who love artisanal drinks. Only drawback to this hand-crafted deliciousness is it all takes a while. Super nice staff but it took me about 10 minutes to get my order in and another 10 for the drink and the place was not busy at all. Not a big deal if you intend to lounge but I think this place is built for a slow savor. Which is fine by me, just know what you're getting into... read more

"Excellent cocoa by downtown Durham" Really enjoyed our first visit here (especially after a slightly disappointing dinner experience across the street). It's clearly a mom & pop sort of place, and we were impressed that, even though they've just opened, they have a large section of their website devoted to giving back to the community. They had various coffees, cocoas, and chocolates, as well as a selection of desserts. Setting is a bit quirky, as it's clearly a painted-over/ renovated garage, giving a sort of "hipster" ambiance. Neat seemingly hand-made ceramic mugs, too, with the name of the store on them. Positives: + Outstandingly tasty hot cocoa. My wife and I had a 70% 8-oz dark hot cocoa, and our kids went with the 40%. Price was $3.25 each, which is not cheap but not unusually high. Everyone was VERY happy with the taste of their choice. + Very friendly service. Speed was adequate, too... we got our drinks within 5 minutes. + Lots of comfortable couches on which to sit, as well as cushy chairs. + Late hours. Open 'til midnight (on Saturday)? Wow! Cons: - Layout. Not their fault, but the place is small, and the way it's laid out, just a few people already there can make it such that a "group" can't sit together. As with many coffee shops, when we went, there were a lot of individual people with laptops in the store-- they were each sitting in the middle of large couches, so there was no spot for our group of four to actually sit together. Synopsis: Very happy with our visit. Would be "thrilled" if it were just a bit cheaper, but they do have bills to pay and are providing an excellent quality product, so I understand. This is a little neat and popular coffee shop but I can't quite understand the hype. I've been here three times to use my gift card, given by a friend and didn't find anything that I like. During my second visit, I accidentally​ ordered one of the refreshers with some sort of homemade syrup and it was basically sparkling water with syrup because they ran out of lemonade. It was almost $5...holy! Also, during this visit; the person taking my order was super moody which didn't give off a good vibe. I'm glad that I'm done using my gift card here. It's a vanilla latte with maca root and ginger powder, topped with black lava salt. It's $3.75 for 8oz or $4.25 for 12oz. The latte art is beautifully spectacular. It wasn't too heavy on the coffee, like most lattes. However, it does have a unique rim of salt - not on the cup itself (like a margarita), but in the drink itself. Strange, I know. Do I like it? ummm....no. It's like being at the beach, then accidentally gulping a mouthful of that awful saltiness because you were unprepared for a wave. Pleasant? I think not. Still, the drink was good overall. This place has a very hipster vibe to it. Not too much seating (including the outdoor seating), and this place tends to get very crowded with a very long line. Love the ambiance of this place, and a GREAT place to get some work done. I enjoyed sitting outside to get some Vitamin D and work simultaneously. I had a specialty iced tea, and it tasted good, but I'm not sure how much I'd get it again. Keep in mind, I'm not a caffeine drinker at all, so I'm biased in my review. BUT, I feel those who do enjoy trying different teas and coffees would go nuts at this place, the combinations are unique, and I've never seen them in any coffee shops ever! There's this one place in my college town where everyone goes to hang out with friends, study, and/or people watch. I've been looking for the longest time for a replacement coffee shop in my new town and I've got to say Cocoa Cinnamon is the closest thing I've found. It's got the community feel which I love. You do see lots of the same faces which can be comforting. I also had a couple of interesting (but pleasant) encounters with strangers here too. If they had better and wider selection of beverage options, I'd give it a 5. Also, I wish they would re-stock their punch-cards. Stopped by on the way to the Farmer's Market to grab a coffee. This was our first time, and I liked the way the have things set up for a Covid safety. We ordered a hot chocolate, and a Chai Tea with Oat Milk. They also had some amazing looking croissants in the case, so we decided to grab the special potato and egg one. I failed to get a pic of it, but it was so buttery and flaky, all the things you would want a croissant to be. They charge 20% automatic gratuity, so just know that in advance. That is typically what I leave anyway, so it was perfectly acceptable to me. The chai was room temp and I am more of a hot beverage kind of person, so that's what the one star off was for. If I order it hot, I'd like for it to actually be hot. The hot chocolate was the same way, but perfectly fine as it was for my son. I thought it to be a bit expensive at $16..so not sure that it will be a go to spot when I'm in the area, but it was fine for a once over. read more

Two words: DR. DURHAM. What a beautiful specialty latte. Most speciality lattes are overly sweet. This is not. This is like a chef's latte. The smaller, 8 oz, size is not even really a latte.
