Wanted to try somewhere new and this place just amazing!! The atmosphere is simple but relaxing with light piano music in the background. I ordered the rotti for an appetizer and it tasted really good! A light crispy pancake thats served with something that was like chili with potatoes. They complemented each other really well! Now the best part was the sarang burong. It had a ring of fried taro and the middle was filled with a mix of chicken, shrimp and veggies. The dish was elegantly prepared and tasted phenomenal. I was surprised by how much they filled it up! Now the biggest surprise was the fried taro. I've enjoyed taro before for the mild taste, but the one here was bursting with flavor! I was absolutely surprised the rush of flavor and was great eating with the meat and veggies when I ran out of rice. 5/5 I will be coming back! :D read more

Thanks to Naz B, I had the wonderful experience here at our last International Supper. The menu has reasonable prices, and you will leave with leftovers if you order some plates with friends to share. My favorite was the Beef Rengdeng. I am going to be honest, it isn't a beautiful colorful dish, rather brown and lumpy...but it is awesome. The sauce is delicious, and it comes with some cucumbers and white rice. The Roti Canai is quite delicious as well. Naz informed us that it is a typical breakfast dish, and good for those who have had a few too many drinks the night before. Doughy and crispy all at once. The Sambal Kangkong was very shrimpy tasting, which was not what I expected, but I really enjoyed it. Gil noted that being able to find a dish like this here is a special treat, and hard to find locally. I also really enjoyed the Char Kway Teow. The noodles with shrimp and cashews were such a delicious balance of sweet and savory flavor. I will definitely be coming back when I have a hankering for some different flavors. The service was really great, and the place was very clean. I am excited to try some of their bubble teas next time. read more

I have been wanting to try this place since my fellow Yelpers have raved about it especially Naz. We were seated in the booths. I ordered the Malaysian hot tea which tasted like a milk tea, not too sweet, I really liked it! Boba/bubbles would have been great addition to the tea! I ordered the roti canai based on everyone's suggestion. The roti came out hot and delicious. It was so light and fluffy. The small bowl of curry was enough with the roti, the curry tastes very similar to Vietnamese curry with a potato and piece of chicken. I could eat the roti by itself all day! Next up came the satay chicken appetizer, the chicken on a stick was grilled to perfection. The sauce to dip was sweet like a peanut sauce but very tasty. The Malaysian style ribs were basically fried ribs, nothing too special. I wouldn't order it again. The waitress suggested we try this but honestly she didn't know what to suggest. The pineapple fried rice was very tasty, it consisted of chicken, shrimp, and cashews. There was no pineapple at all. I would suggest ordering this. I love dessert and per everyone's suggestion ordered the ABC, I love sugar but this was way too sweet for me. The dessert had palm seeds, corn, peanuts. I was not a fan of this at all. There's plenty of parking. The staff was very friendly and the food came out hot which I loved. I'm excited to come back here and try other dishes. read more

I tried Coco Garden for the first time last night as part of the Yelp International Supper Club. I am very pleased with my first experience. Coco Garden is located in the back right corner of the Jefferson Plaza on Jefferson Rd. If you're familiar with the old Mariachi Mexican Grill restaurant, Coco Garden has taken over that building. It sits right behind the Golden Corral, so it is a bit difficult to see from the road. As part of the International Supper Club, a lot of food was ordered and shared, so we all got a good taste of the menu. The Malaysian Sweet and Sour Pork was very delicious as was the Curry Chicken. One of my favorite dishes was topping the sticky white rice with the Beef Rendang. After filling my belly with all of the delicious treats from last night, I am so glad that we went here for our event. I will definitely be coming back here again. read more

Coco Garden - Sweet and Sour Pork - Malaysian Near Me - Rochester, New York

My go-to is coconut fried rice [with shrimp]; it is in fact very difficult to not order coconut rice if I drive anywhere near Coco Garden restaurant. But, I have loved their noodle soups and other dishes with their ample vegetables, and light fruit flavors. Interestingly, here is the second time I have ever made the observation that the way the food is prepared 'features' salt, in my opinion. I'm NOT calling the food salty. It's just I have only rarely enjoyed salt as an actor before, you know, in an authentic or creative dish [I'm not talking about tortilla chips or popcorn; heh ~ I like pretzels withOUT salt...] in a fine, FINE French restaurant [in France] where salt was specially layered in a shepherd's pie featuring duck as the meat ingredient, trending between bottles of introductory rose' and table white dinner wine. It's as if all the other flavors are conveying this nuance, or perhaps ancient Malaysian wisdom in the preparation, and the food wouldn't taste 'right' without this soft spotlight. I haven't had anything that wasn't delicious at Coco Garden, and have ordered here throughout the pandemic. I have wished that take out orders were ready sooner, but I guess you can't rush awesomeness! I miss eating in! and, am excited that we will likely soon return to it. I would like for this business to do well! and, I will return again and again. ~ K read more

This was a fun find - Malaysian food in Rochester! Beef rendang is kind of famous so I had to try it. Super flavorful, rich, lots of spices, and very tender meat. I can see why you might save this for special occasions. The coconut rice was a really good choice as it added extra nice flavor. The lunch portion was very filling so if the dinner portion is any bigger you will almost certainly have some to take home. The broth was light and tasty, too. I loved that you could get the Malaysian tea cold since it was really hot out. I look forward to coming back and trying more dishes, especially the bah kut teh. Hopefully, they have the strong tea to go with it. I'll save that for when it's colder outside, though. Meanwhile, while it's hot it might be a good time to try the ABC and the chendol :) read more

Thanks to Naz B.' S review and others my friend and I decided to come for dinner. Good to see some of my Yelp Elite Friends who were here for the monthly "International Supper Club" Hi! I've never had Malaysian food and after reading so many positive reviews I thought it was time to come for a visit. This is a non de script kind of place. It's clean and tidy. Efficient service. Get an appetizer for yourself don't share. We both got the Roti Canai- a crispy pancake with a curry dipping sauce. YUMMEH! Seriously don't share this get one for yourself it's so savory and the warm goodness of that pancake! We both got an order of the Beef Rendang it's flavorful not really hot but with lots of interesting spices; it's simmered in cinnamon, cloves and lemon grass in coconut milk. It's got a warm and umami taste to it. Make sure you ask for coconut rice with it instead of regular rice which you can have anytime. I seriously I need to come back and have more of this fabulous food. read more

An incredible new addition to Rochester! Like any new business, there is some room for improvement with service so I'm sure this place will be 5 star worthy in a few months. They don't have any vegetarian soups which really bothered me... why have vegetarian lunch special options if the vegetarian crowd can't eat the soup it comes with nor any other soup on the menu? Soup aside, all of the entrees we had were absolutely incredible! They were all very unique and their menu was so big that we'll definitely have to come back and try some more dishes out. The veggies in my curry mee were very crispy and fresh. I'm so glad we came here and tried it out! The one man that worked there was such an awesome person! He was energetic, happy, and helped create an awesome ambiance. read more

Found this gem is a plaza while I was looking for another restaurant. I am glad I did. Had the Rendang beef lunch special and it was good. I wouldn't say it the same as what I have had in Malaysia but is pretty close. You won't be disappointed. It was promptly served so if you are in a hurry, this is the place. Will def return the next time I'm in Rochester. read more

This is a very solid restaurant! My husband and I were in town visiting and based on the other reviews gave it a try! We took the advice of other reviewers and tried the roti appetizer. It was very good but I don't think it was anything that special or different from Indian naan and a curry that you can get at an Indian restaurant! We also got their traditional noodle dish and a coconut chicken curry dish. Both were good and I would have loved to try other dishes as well! Maybe next time we visit! read more

Stopped in for for lunch today, and I can't stop thinking about how good it was. I used to frequent a Malaysian restaurant when I lived out of state, but hadn't had Malaysian food in a few years. I was absolutely blown away by the food. I had the roti canai and the chili chicken lunch special, all in, it was under $20. The appetizer came out quickly, followed by the entree. Both dishes were appropriately spicy and had tons of flavor. read more

Close your eyes and walk in, the decor does not do the place justice!! This is my go to restaurant in Rochester, there has been a couple of weeks where I go 3 times. A small family owned restaurant specializing in Malaysian cuisine. Which is very similar to Chinese food. I have had authentic Asian cuisine my entire life, my parents are chefs, and I visited NYC almost every other weekend. But this place was able to enhance their flavors and surpass some of the best Asian restaurants in NYC. The dish that caught and trapped me is the Kari Ayam, chicken and potatoes in a coconut curry. The curry is super rich in flavor, which is the perfect combo with there coconut or chicken rice. It is super filling but there is no way you are leaving without finishing that entire bowl. I have tried almost all of there main entrees and I have yet to find one that did not make me satisfied and happy. Some of these other dishes include: Malaysian Buddhist - Assortment of vegetables mixed together with a light sauce. Malaysian Spareribs - Deep fried pork with a sweet sauce on the side. King Pork Buff - Large slices of pork in a sweet bbq like sauce. A little strong on the flavor. There are a ton of more dishes, and each of them will catch you off guard. On top of that the service is very good even during rush hour. They might even remember you if you come often enough. Give the place a try, I promise you wont be sorry. I plan to be back the next time I go out and eat, I just feel lucky that I found a place like this. read more

We went here when we were practically dying of hunger. Two restaurants we had been to before decided to stop taking orders almost more than an hour before they close. So this wasn't even our first choice to begin with. We ordered roti canai and spring rolls as appetizers, and Pad Thai and basil fried rice. There was absolutely nothing to complain about. I absolutely loved their roti canai and pad thai. The quantity was also generous for the price and we ended up sharing two main course dishes among four people and we were super happy eating such good food. Last time Rochester had a snow storm and almost every other restaurant was closed (or closed early), this restaurant was open till 10 pm. All the other restaurants close around 9 pm and this restaurant is always open whenever I get hungry late at night. I can rely on them for this. Even when you walk in 10 minutes before they close, they are welcoming and will not ask you to take takeaway. read more

I would love this place to open in my hometown...this is truly a gem to find in Rochester. Malaysian food is mostly A few great dishes that we ordered today: +Roti Canai, amazing thin bread that is crispy outside and tender inside. Served with curry chicken dipping sauce. +Beef Rendang, beef chunks with a spicy sauce, it's sort of a combination with curry, spices, and satay peanut sauce. Amazing tenderness and solid meat. +Hainanese Chicken, authentically prepared with a sweet chili sauce, unlike the Beef Rendang which came with a spicy sauce, the Hainanese Chicken is on the more refreshing side. Pair it up with the Chicken rice! On top of these amazing dishes, this seems to be a family-operated with very friendly staff. Great service and good portion too! I also think it's very reasonably priced for such authentic Southeast Asian cuisine, especially not in NYC--but here at Rochester! read more

I ordered half chicken and sesame beef but my chicken is only 1/4 with no chicken thigh , the dark meat part is only one wings with little meat on it , other is fat skin with bone I think it's chicken belly part, no drumstick , no breast white meat and that 's all and I have to pay the price for half chicken . It is not a big deal but the chelf should pay attention in menu order 1/2 chicken more than serve whatever leftover. read more

First time having Malaysian cuisine. Found it very tasty. Friendly service. Food arrived quickly and was plentiful.

In a different city, I'd give this place 4 stars. But it's Rochester, so I'm willing to bump it up to 5. Most non-western restaurants I've been to in Rochester have ranged from average-but-ok to just bad; Coco Garden is a noticeable step above them and deserves to be reviewed that way. Malaysian food is really hard to find in North America. Good Malaysian food even more so. My parents lived in Singapore at one point, and I visited them for a month or two, and we got very accustomed to some of the food there, and tried a lot of different varieties of laksa. Coming back to the US, restaurant laksa was only ever a pale imitation. Until this place. The waitstaff were skeptical of whether we, a table of Americans, would really like laksa, and I can see why---when it came out, it was so pungent I was briefly alarmed. But then I started eating, and it was pungent because it was actually correct. Not quite the same as eating streetside at a night market in Malacca, but a much closer and sharper approximation than we've found even in more food-y cities like Portland or Toronto. Roti canai was also excellent, but prata isn't quite as hard to find (most Indian restaurants have a version that's not quite the same, but close enough) as laksa. read more

A great go-to Malaysian restaurant in Rochester! Their roti canai alone is worth the visit, but pretty much anything you get is worthwhile. Prices were manageable as well. If you're on the fence between two restaurants, and you pick this one, you won't regret it. read more

Very enjoyable first meal. Next time we'll be more daring and try something labeled with the chili peppers.

Horrible! I ordered pad Thai and they gave me 90% noodles and 10% vegetables and tofu! The ratio didn't even come close to half. I was given probably 3 pieces of broccoli and 4 pieces of small tofu. I will never come here again! read more

DELICIOUS! Everything I've ordered from here has not disappointed. I highly recommend the Roti canai appetizer.

Went on memorial day 2023. Place was deserted. We ordered beef satay, chicken satay, spring rolls, Sambal beef, bubble tea and a coke. The satay, both beef and chicken ($9.25), were the size of my pinky finger in girth, and maybe 3 inches long...the smallest portions we ever encountered in our long-lived Asian dining experience. The satay were served with a side of peanut sauce (very good hence my 2 star rating instead of 1), and misshapen pieces of cucumber and red onion instead of the traditional cucumber sauce. My bubble tea was hot at the bottom with ice dumped on top. Not pleasant. The shrimp spring rolls ($7.95) were small, about 4" long and as wide as my thumb. They lacked salt, had a whole shrimp inside, and were fried (not steamed). The Sambal beef special ($11.95, regularly $17.95) was downright slimy and tasted "off". It's by far not our first time ordering this dish, yet the older woman (possibly the owner) told us "I know, it's just the way the sauce is" (read: you just don't know what we are talking about). I told her it's not the sauce, but the beef itself that tasted "off", and she kept insisting it's the sauce, so I asked point blank how long the beef had been in the fridge. No reply. I then told her we won't be eating it, and asked for the check. Sure enough, the lousy beef was on the bill. I said "Excuse me, you're charging us for the sambai beef?" she said "Yes" and I said "Why?" She made a face, huffed, left and eventually took it off the bill. The restaurant is clearly struggling both with making ends meet and with retaining cooks who care about what they serve and, most importantly, how they store pre-cooked ingredients. It was our second time there. We certainly won't be back. Ever. read more

My go to Malaysian spot when I'm homesick! This is the closest Malaysian restaurant to Buffalo (not counting Canada for now)! Don't get the regular food like teriyaki and stuff if you are looking for a Malaysian food! Their service is great. They give you some soup for free as an apparent and the soup is really good! I always get the Hokkien mee! I have been here many times and the food holds up! Also the claypot tofu is good too and the curry fish is amazing! read more

I love how they give you chicken soup before your meal. Really reminds me of home. I would be going back a lot more whenever I have time ^.^

I love Coco Garden Prices are great!! Staff is good & friendly but doesn't speak much English but that's fine. The only thing is, I always have to flag someone down to refill my water & they're kind of stingy with napkins lol. They always start with a broth soup with radish which I love. So yummy I always get seconds of the soup. Appetizer - Roti Canai I love this!!!! The roti is delish. The curry dip is great but it isn't spicy. I say that because it has a red chili pepper next to it. Appetizer - Golden Calamari It's yummy I really like it. Appetizer (I have them bring it out as a entree) -Crispy Chicken Wings The wings are great. Fried gold & crispy!! It has a pine leaf wrapped around it. Idk what that's for but I eat it and it goes very well with it. The wings are nice and juicy. Entree - Spare Ribs Malaysian Style Very good! I burn the roof of my mouth every time I get these. This is one of a handful of restaurants we return to. The food more than makes up for the location and decor. The menu is expansive, well-priced, and can accommodate many tastes -- we always try something different and have been well-satisfied. The one constant has been the salt/pepper eggplant (which my husband affectionately calls "eggplant fries"). Overall the profile is Malaysian-Chinese, family-style. When I'd failed to make any plans for Chinese New Year's eve, I came here for some traditional dishes that fit the bill. I would be thrilled to see this humble place succeed for many years to come. read more

We just moved to Rochester from Kansas and we were craving for some Asian food. We visited this restaurant based on their Yelp reviews. At first, we we' were a little skeptical. Why? Two reasons: 1) hardly any cars in the parking lot, 2) the exterior looked a little rundown. We decided to order their take-outs instead of eating in just because we have two young ones. Oh my goodness! The food was sooooooooo good! We had Pad Thai and their Seafood casserole. We were so impressed! The flavor is very authentic(I liked the seafood casserole better) How do we know that it's authentic? That's because we have eaten the same type of food in Asia! Definitely going back again! read more

If you like to wait over an hour for mediocre food this is the place for you. My boyfriend ordered a SINGLE order of fried rice from here. When he went to pick it up they made him wait an ENTIRE hour and a half. They did not provide him with any updates. If he knew it was going to be so long he would have left. 45 minutes into the wait they asked him what kind of rice he wanted--clearly there is some disorganization in the kitchen because the place was not even that packed. They would not even give him a refund...what a joke. If I could give the place negative stars I would. read more

This is the only place in Rochester I've been able to find authentic Beef Rendang. It's a favorite of mine when I'm feeling a bit under the weather, not sure why but the combination of spices and beef seems to help me get over most colds. They make a great Beef Rendang! Finally got to try this place and it did not disappoint. I got the Malaysian Sesame Beef with coconut rice, great flavor and service. We found this restaurant by luck. On the way back from Niagara Falls to New Jersey, thus restaurant was near the hotel with very high reviews. Never tried Malaysian before but decide to go due to high review. Location wasn't ideal but food was excellent. Never tried curry food before but their curry chicken was exceptional. Their vegetable dish was very good too. Didn't have many customers even though it's Saturday night. It was a corner of a mall which had not many cars parked. If they were in New York or New Jersey, this restaurant could be a big hit. In addition, the staff were very courteous and helpful. Don't miss it if you are around the area. read more

This is one of the best Asian restaurants in Rochester. It's in a strip mall, but that doesn't reflect on the quality of the food at all. It is Malaysian, but has aspects of Chinese, Indian, and Thai. I went with a big party and everyone liked their food. I would highly recommend the roti appetizer and the chicken randang, but almost everything is delicious. The only dish that wasn't great were the spare ribs. Also, our waiter was so great and checked in on us regularly all night. I will definitely be coming back here soon! read more

TLDR : nice food, large quantity, safely hidden away from plain sight I ended up visiting this place since my roommate was bored eating the usual food for lunch. First of all, as almost all the review says, its tucked away in Henrietta right down to the end of the mall - so you do have to search for it. There are booths where you can sit (usually get seated) or you can opt out for sitting at the bar as well. The most popular dish : roti canai (Its a must try!). It is served hot and fluffy - and tastes as good as it looks. A small bowl of chicken curry is served with the roti - the seasoning reminded me of food back home (that's a new!). If I had known how this tastes, I probably would have just kept on ordering this dish right here and wrapped up the lunch rather than going for entrees/soup. We ordered Chicken Curry Mee (noodle soup) and Sambal Chicken - the portions were sufficiently large to take 'to go'. They both were very tasty and the chicken was well seasoned compared to other counterparts in the area. My roommate ended up having Sticky Mango rice - as he puts it, the Mangoes tasted very nice, though I've had better sticky rice at other places. Definitely worth a try though. Overall, its a good restaurant with a huge menu to try out. read more
