The Squiers Manor is an experience. No detail left undone. The proprietors are masters in their field...from the abundance of period pieces furnishing the Manor, to the home-cooked meals, down to the complimentary toiletries; including eye makeup remover wipes. It's in the fine details like these that the love of hospitality shows. Thank you Nathan and Rud.

Recently, I needed to be in Maquoketa, Iowa, for a wedding, and I was glad to learn of the highly reviewed Squiers Manor B&B. With short notice I was able to make a reservation in the Beulah Room, named after one of the Squiers daughter's who grew up and was married in the house, whose father the house was built for. It was a lovely room with a twin bed for our 9 year old daughter, and at a most reasonable price too. The furnishings in our room and all the others we were able to see, were stunning. This may have been the finest B&B I have ever stayed in anywhere in the US and Canada. But not only was the building grand, and furnishings fantastic (Kathy and her husband are antique dealers and have searched high and low for the most amazing furnishings for their B&B), the hospitality was grand too. Kathy accommodated our need to check in a bit before standard check in between 4-8pm, and kindly greeted us and gave us a full tour of the house. If we have any disappointment at all, it was that we could not stay longer, enjoy the evening dessert or partake of the morning breakfast. We have heard it is great. We can't wait to get back to Maquoketa again and visit Squiers Manor again, and we would tell you to make a reservation here if you are passing through or staying for a few days in the area, it is a MAGNIFICENT B&B.

The room for the half assed breakfast is in no way large enough to accommodate the number of guests being dupped into staying hear. However, it was so disappointing and gross to have to sleep in our booked room for three nights. A few things-- 1.) There was NEVER anyone at the front desk!!! Who are we supposed to direct questions or concerns to? 2.) The "free" morning breakfasts consisted some type of greasy meet, watery eggs, and stale blueberry muffins, bagels, etc. We didn't even bother to grab breakfast there on our way home. 3.) Our room smelled of cigarette smoke and I had a near anaphylaxis reaction to SOMETHING in our room all three nights. Every night we came home, there was about a 2-3 hour window where I was fine... and then just like that the hives would return with a vengeance. I haven't had a rash/hive or issue with my breathing like that in a long time. I have severe allergies to both dust and mold... 4.) The note (see photo) was left on our bedside table sometime on Saturday. What the hell...? They wouldn't touch the bed because it had one of our blankets from home on it. I travel extensively for work and have spent many a nights/days in hotels for conferences, advocacy work, clinical trial panels...you name it. I always bring a blanket and no one has ever refused to tidy up my room or change out my linens because of it. Yes, that happened. The hotel cleaners didn't even bother to take our dirty linens?! 5.) I have a disability/handicapped placard as I have a rare condition that causes significant changes in blood sugar and blood pressure. I also have rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. We utilize the placard ESPECIALLY when out of town because of my personal luggage, food, medical supplies, medications, etc. on top of my partner's. The entire time we were at the hotel, some asshole was parked like an asshole and took up TWO disability/handicapped parking spots (there were only two). Now, why am I FURIOUS about this? Because there was absolutely no placard or documentation on the truck's dash, taped to a window, displayed in the back, on the license plate, etc. etc. etc. NONE. AND THERE WAS NO ONE TO REPORT IT TO. We have good friends in this area but will never, ever stay here again.

We ended up deciding to stay an extra night because of the weather going outlr direction. We did not try the restaurant here though, so that I can not speak of. The place was an old textile mill back in the day, so the industrial atmosphere is still evident. In more pleasant weather, it's close enough to walk up to shops or other restaurants. The lobby is warm and inviting. It was a nice place to go out and sit in front of the fireplace and relax. We will definitely be back!!! We love this place.

At 3pm, still no room.......we had four rooms, but the party had pretty much the entire hotel. At 4pm, still no room....but someone walked in the door at 4:05 and they received a room. At 4:15 again, I went to the front desk. Up to this point "Dave" was helping us. He was busy and an older taller lady with long dark & gray hair "helped" us. This is where it got ugly. The lady was the rudest hotel person I have ever met. I asked for answers to why and when. All she did was give me a nasty smirk and I actually told her to remove that smirk. I asked for the Manager, she said the Manager could not do anything about it. I asked again, within 15 minutes we had the Manager. We explain the guarantee we received when booking the Wedding and that we had a pre-wedding party to get to an an hour. She said they were having staffing issues and our four rooms have not been released yet. I informed her, I went to our rooms and the doors were open. The rooms were clean. She explained they have been inspected as complete yet. I explained to her that people have walked in and received rooms. I explained to her she needs to swap out rooms for people standing in the lobby vs. people who have not arrived. 15 minutes later we had three rooms. While standing with the manager as she clicked on her computer, I heard another guest ask the tall long haired lady, "What is going on?, Why aren't rooms ready" The same rude lady behind the counter which smirked at me...........Told the other guest, "It's none of your business." Wow. I thought her husband was going to jump over the counter at Ms. Tall & Rude. The next day I caught a room cleaner in the hallway and said they did not have to do a complete clean on our room. Just give us towels and coffee. We received NOTHING. Hotel Millwright way over promised and way under delivered. I'm shocked at the lady behind the counter. Dave (behind the counter) was nice.. The Manager did not have her arms around the operation. She made people stand in the lobby for an hour and a half while rooms were available, just not reassigned. Regarding the reception.......the facility was nice. However, certain food items ran out before all guests were fed. The bar was understaffed and the lines were long. Hope this review finds many people and saves you from the Millwright.
