My experience with Closets by Design has been extremely disappointing. The salesperson never explained the company's cancellation policy or other important contract terms before asking me to sign. Shortly after signing the contract, I called to cancel the project. I was told someone from the office would contact me, but no one ever did despite my efforts to follow up. Now I am being told that my $1,200 deposit is nonrefundable, even though I tried to cancel immediately and relied on the information I was given. I feel this situation could have been avoided if the cancellation policy had been clearly explained from the beginning and if the office had followed through as promised. The lack of communication and poor customer service have been frustrating. I expected transparency, professionalism, and timely responses, but unfortunately that was not my experience. Based on how my situation was handled, I cannot recommend Closets by Design. read more

I hired Closets by Design for a custom 6 year old's closet. They had a promotion and the catalogue looked promising. Plus- my interior designer referred them as a moderate priced closet shop. The first designer (a young woman- seemed inexperienced) rendered a design that was fine as far as I could tell- but left a ton of negative space (e.g. 5-6 feet) above the cabinatry. When the installers did the job, the drawers bumped up against the doors- so a full redesign was required. On the 2nd design, the final option was TOO HIGH for my daughter to reach much of the hanging + shelving. The job cost $2,200 with little to no quality control or oversight of the design process. The company uses HAND DRAWN designs (haven't integrated to digital design tools) and it was nearly impossible to verify the design was right. For this kind of hassle- I recommend going to IKEA a working with a specialist there. You'll save both time AND money. read more

Everything was just great! We bought our Condo and the closets were being held up by shower rods and wires. Closets by Designs came in and gave us exactly what we needed and did it in under an hour. ordered display & storage cabinets for my sitting room. paid over $6,000. when installed I questioned how some of the drawers seemed unstable. also the drawers didn't all line up. asked installer about it & he said to call service to have them come out & check. which I found odd as he was onsite & just installed the units. Sue G., sales rep., never called to see how we liked the unit nor if we had questions. A few days later we noticed about 50 screw pops in an exact outline of the new installed cabinets on the adjacent wall. Service didn't come out to see it, only said installer did a good job & then offered to MAYBE PARTIALLY REIMBURSE US if we get an estimate to repair wall. I suggest everyone simply buy standalone furniture rather than use a questionable company like Closets by Design. read more

We had a a great experience with Closets by Design for our entire home and I particularly love how our primary bedroom closet turned out. Kathy Cappas, our designer, had very helpful ideas and was meticulous about getting all of the measurements correct for each closet. She was also patient and thorough with any change I wanted to make. Even the installers, said that she did a great job making it easier for them. And speaking of installation, Paul, lead installer, and Joe, assistant, worked very hard (even working through lunch) to get our big job completed in only two days. Paul's efficiency in having prepared materials ahead of time and skill in his fast, yet correct, calculations were impressive. Overall, the shelving material is absolute junk. DO NOT ALLOW THIS COMPANY TO PERFORM YOUR SHELVING REMOVAL! THEY WILL DESTROY YOUR WALLS! Read your contract very very carefully. I am letting everyone in my hometown of Rockford, Illinois know how this place does business. Despicable! Check out these pictures and see for yourself! Yep, I know, partly my own fault for not doing my own shelving removal, but just look at these pictures.....lol....I mean ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS! This company is a joke. Once they get your money its GAME OVER! Buyer beware. Don't forget, read your contract or better yet, take your hard earned money somewhere/anywhere else! You have been warned. I had someone at my house for a consult, I have never had anything like this built for me before so I of course had some questions. the lady that came was very overpromising when I asked how custom we can get. promised me everything I wanted. and then proceeded to shoot down everything I wanted and said "we can't do that.." she asked me for a budget and I said I am completely new to this so what is a ballpark price range? she said "I can make it whatever I want" giving me absolutely no frame of reference to go off of. we sat down and she put something together which looked absolutely nothing like what I have envisioned. So I said this is a bit of a compromise from what I want, how long is this quote good for? she then got very rude for the rest of her visit. made it a point to let me know that she doesn't get paid if she doesn't make a sell. by the end of her drawing up what they could do, it looked just like 2 bookshelves against the wall. for 5,000$. no thanks. she also scratched my freshly painted walls that we had just professionally had done when she was measuring. read more

We recently moved to the Chicagoland area and bought a new home in Hawthorn Woods. I absolutely loved everything about the home, except for these awful wire shelving/hanging units that were in all of the closets. They are the worse, look cheap - and totally not functional. I contacted the builder, and they referred me to the company that installed them as they also do custom closets with shelving, cabinets and drawers. I was happy to know that we had other options, but that turned to not-so-happy after they came out and gave me an estimate for just the two walk-in closets in our master bedroom. The quote was so expensive, and I just couldn't justify spending that much on two closets. I had received a mailing from Closets By Design, so I decided to get an estimate from them, and I'm so glad I did! The sales consultant, Jen came out to the house and listened to my concerns about the cost. She didn't make any promises, but I showed her pictures of what I liked, and she said she was pretty confident she could come up with a design that met all of our needs, and within our budget. She measured all of the space in both my husbands walk-in and mine. We talked about how much hanging space, shelves and drawers we needed. Then, instead of leaving and just e-mailing me something, she sat right down and drew up the design, and priced it out on the spot. Her design and ideas were so good and I liked it even better than the previous one we had gotten. Best part of all was it was about 1/3 less than the estimate from the other company! Jen showed us different options for the type of finishes, colors, etc. and explained the benefits. We decided to upgrade one level up from the standard finish and also added a belt rack for my husband's closet. We also picked out beautiful chrome hardware which was not extra. From the date we signed the contract, to the date of the install was not even three weeks. The installer, Mark arrived right on time and went to work. He professionally removed the baseboards without damaging the section that would stay, and it looks perfect. What a transformation! We absolutely love our new master bedroom closets! I told Jen, that with the money we saved, we are thinking of upgrading the guest room closet as well. I don't want anyone reading this review to think that because the estimate was less, that the finished product was somehow inferior. Absolutely not the case. We are having the builder do some other upgrades on our home unrelated to the closets, and when I showed them what Closets By Design had done for us, even they were impressed! Great Job Jen on your design and for helping us stay within our budget. Thank you Mark for such a seamless installation.
