Walking into Author's Kitchen + Bar in Appleton, WI feels like stepping into a warm memory. The…read moremoment we opened the door, the creak of the original wooden floors greeted us alongside the cheerful hum of a bustling kitchen. Laughter rang from somewhere behind the counter, a sound that immediately set the tone for a visit rooted in hospitality and heart. Kailin welcomed us with a smile that matched the inviting aroma wafting from the kitchen. After guiding us to our table, we settled into the comfort of the cozy dining room, accompanied by the subtle percussion of footsteps on those charming old floors. Within moments, our server appeared, effortlessly balancing warmth and efficiency as they presented a glass of fresh-brewed iced tea, beads of condensation catching the afternoon light, and a steaming mug of coffee rich with the scent of roasted beans. We began our lunch with a bowl of tomato cream soup. It arrived piping hot, its vibrant color promising comfort. The first spoonful delivered on that promise: velvety and rich, with a gentle heat balanced by a quiet sweetness, each bite coating the palate in layers of flavor. Before we could fully finish savoring the soup, our empanadas made their entrance. Today's lineup included cheese and quinoa, chicken and cheese, and beef. The empanadas were a feast for the senses--golden, flaky crusts that crunched delicately beneath the fork, releasing steam fragrant with seasoned fillings. Each bite was a perfect contrast of textures: the crisp pastry giving way to molten, well-seasoned centers. The trio of sauces elevated the experience--the truffle aioli luxuriously earthy, the tomato cream sauce echoing the soup's comforting warmth, and a third option adding a playful zip. From the first creak of the floorboards to the last satisfying bite, the meal at Author's was a five-star journey. It wasn't just service; it was service from the heart, guided by intuition and a genuine love for the craft. In a world of transactional dining, Author's stands apart as an experience where every sensory detail is curated with care.

The rarity time off we snuck over here and could not have been more impressed! Very much a unique place in Appleton but takes you to a big city like NYC or Portland. The vibes, decor, overall environment was welcoming. Food was delicious! We got BYO omelette and Cheese risotto cake with braised beef short ribs. Both were cooked to perfection and flavors aplenty. Not overly salted which many places can be. The perfect portion size that we didn't even need to take anything to go. Honestly impressed. Even more cool is they try to source ingredients locally when they can so it's helping our community. Very excited to have found this place and will be back for more! We did try some of their specialty drinks and will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu whenever we get the chance. We came back for a second visit fairly quickly because we kept thinking about the food! We got some breakfast bowls and added protein to it. Again, this place did not disappoint in the slightest! Happy eating!

Bazil's Pub & Provisions is one of those places I can walk into without needing a plan--and that's…read moreexactly why I love it. Established in 1993, Bazil's has that classic old-school pub personality that you just don't manufacture. Dark wood, vintage bar vibes, a relaxed atmosphere and a massive beer selection that gives you plenty of reasons to hang around for a while. And honestly, the beer selection is the star of the show. Bazil's is known for having one of the biggest craft beer selections on College Avenue, and it's easy to see why people make this place a destination. Whether you already know exactly what you want or you're standing there thinking, "Okay...what the hell am I drinking today?" there's plenty to explore. But what I appreciate most is that they don't overcomplicate things. Good basic pub food. Cold beer. Comfortable surroundings. No need to dress it up with a paragraph of adjectives and culinary buzzwords. I went with the burger and fries, and it was exactly what I wanted from an old-school neighborhood pub: simple, satisfying comfort food that pairs perfectly with a cold beer. And then there's the fish tank. Seriously. That thing deserves its own Yelp review. There's something ridiculously relaxing about sitting at the bar, having a cold beer in front of you and watching the fish cruise around behind the glass. It adds this weirdly peaceful element to a classic pub environment. Bazil's is the kind of place you don't necessarily go to "experience." You go to hang out. And sometimes those are the places you end up remembering most. Brews. Views. Food. Repeat.
