A coworker told me about this place for good sandwiches. He was right about that. My husband had a small salami and provolone and since it's the holidays, I decided to cheat on my diet and had a small prosciutto and fresh mozzarella with roasted peppers. The bread is nice and they put a fair amount of meat on the sandwich. They have a great deli counter with a variety of Italian treats - marinated olives, artichokes, appetizers, salads, etc. The bakery side looks good too but we didn't have any of the sweets this time. The more that I talked to people there, I went around and purchased more. A real treasure. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because I have only been there once. The sub I ordered was 5 star, but there is so much more on the menu I need to explore. I arrived just before closing. Everybody was busy cleaning but at least 3 people asked if they could help me. Everybody was very pleasant. They obviously enjoyed their work. They gave me a nice sample of the house made mozzarella which was delicious. I asked around Hackensack Medical Center who had the best suds and everybody said Clemente Bakery". I used to work the other side of the street and this place is getting better and better! As other people say, their business is making and selling good homemade foods w/ authentic ingredients. You can't expect "super friendly customer care". Also they are distributor of Italian foods. So, this deli started as "outlet", I believe. Great Cafe in the weirdest location. You drive through a weird industrial area near the train tracks and there it is. It's a pretty big store, all sorts of imported good; beverages, meats, cheeses, pastas; Fresh baked bread, sfogliatella (?), brioche, and everything in between. The espresso is pretty good here too, not much crema, but still tasty. The wife ordered an egg and cheese sandwich, it comes on a small ciabatta roll, perfectly cooked eggs, awesome bread; I had a brioche, light and sweet, and an espresso. At a glance the gentlemen working behind the sandwich counter are evidence enough of the authentic Italian quality the products will provide. The younger ladies aren't very warm and fuzzy to talk to, but I appreciate how efficient they are in getting customers taken care of. Pastries = Amazing. Sfogliatelle was crisp, flaky and delicious. Biscotti come in two sizes, and are the perfect accompaniment for coffee to have as breakfast. Sesame cookies are a bit lightly sesamed, but burst with flavor. Sandwiches (specifically mozzarella and roasted red peppers) = blissful. I've had Many homemade mozzarellas in my day, and this one topped them all. Soft, with a hint of buttery saltiness, but not too sopping wet. Pair it with roasted peppers marinated in olive oil and a hint of garlic and you know you have a good thing. Sandwiches come in small sizes ($5-7) and large ($1-2 more). I ate half a small for breakfast (with cookies) and the other half for lunch (possibly with more cookies) and was satiated. Bugger appetites would be pleased with even just the small for a meal. The market area also offers taralli, pastas, sauces, Italian sodas (try Sanpelegrino's chinotto- if you like Campari, you'll love this alcohol free refreshment!), cookies and other sundries. Simple table and chair seating occupies half of the large store creating room for the many people who stop on for breakfast or lunch. Not many outlets available, and no wifi, but they'll let you sit for hours. read more

Since I work in Hackensack, I end up eating lunch here about 3-4 times a week. I haven't been to that many Italian deli-bakeries, but of the few I've been to, this is by far the best. You know it's a good sign when you walk into an Italian deli and hear the staff talking in Italian, after all. The fresh mozzerella cheese is nothing short of incredible, especially in their signature sandwich, the Clemente Special. The hot food is also excellent, as they usually have gnocchi, rigatoni, orrechietti, or some other wonderful pasta ready, with sides of vegetables, and the portions are huge. The perpetually cranky staff really grows on you after a while too, and sometimes I think it wouldn't be quite the same if they were actually in a good mood. read more

Slightly out of the way in the industrial area of South Hackensack but definitely worth the slight detour. They just renovated and it looks great on the inside too. The food is amazing and I haven't had anything that I didn't absolutely love. I usually just get a sandwich and the two guys behind the counter are always friendly but to the point. The prosciutto di parma and fresh mozzarella are the best you can get. Sausage and pepperoni breads are always fresh and delicious. The Italian market inside sells everything that you would need to make the delicious feast. I used to work in South Hackensack and most of my co-workers swore this place was the place to go for sandwiches. I've never been a fan. The bread is always tough, just like Jerry's in Englewood. I opt for the pizza whenever I get out numbered by my co-workers. The pizza isn't terrible but it is greasier than any other pizza I've ever had, EVER. The crust was flimsy and floppy, but the after I soaked up the cheese oil with a handful of napkins, the slice tasted decent with the sauce saving it all together. One other thing, half the prices on the menu have a ghetto white label that they slap on to show the price increase. You would assume that the price was being updated to reflect the current price. You'd be wrong. They have a price on the menu and then they have a price on their register. If you question it, they will point to the generic print that says "Prices are subject to change, blah, blah, blah." With the price increase and tax, the slice ends up costing you $2.50. Most pizzerias in Hackensack and most North NJ sell slices for less than or equal to $2.00 with no tax. read more

Clemente's isn't just a bakery. Their bread is excellent, to be sure, but I come here for their Italian specialty items like their cold cuts, cheeses, olives, and the ever evasive "00" flour. They have things like porchetta and speck, when a lot of Italian pork stores carry just your basic generic Italian cold cuts like capocolla or salami. Well Clemente's has all that and more. I travel here from Rockland County, NY simply because the pork stores by me, whether they be in Rockland or just over the border in NJ, don't have what Clemente's has. Which is to say they don't have what they SHOULD have. I'm from Brooklyn and I lived in Astoria so I've been spoiled when it comes to good pork stores. And then came a complimentary pastry( St. Joseph Zeppola or San Giuseppe) from the very sweet Maria that is always helping sis out w/her purchases every time she goes. I am not in NJ all the time anymore but everytime I come home to visit I must stop by Clemente's for some goodies. When you first walk into Clemente you may be a little confused. The signage reads "Bakery" but it looks more like a cafeteria/deli. Don't let their looks fool you, Clemente is a full service bakery. You'll be able to judge the quality of their product when you order a sandwich. While the cold cuts may be outsourced, their bread is made in-house. And it's the quality of their baked goods that will bring you back. My reason for frequenting here is the quality of their cappuchino. It's perfect. If you're a fan of Lavazza, then you'll feel at home here. Parking will be difficult during busier hours. Don't make the mistake of parking in adjacent lots, your car may not be there when you come back out. Or worse yet, you may be met with an irate manager or warehouse owner. We were heading from NYC to Saugerties in upstate for a wedding and picked this place because of its easy access from the highway. We were a bit worried when we found ourselves in an industrial park, thinking we might be headed for a bakery without any retail storefront. Luckily when we found it we discovered that their storefront was big huge and awesome. They have a deli, a pizza station, an olive bar, a pastry station and lots of authentic italian gourmet items for sale on the shelves. They also make breakfast sandwiches that that is exactly what we wanted. My sandwich was a bit over salted, but they ask you if you want salt, pepper, and ketchup, so just tell them no salt and add it to your own liking. We also got some pastries. One was a lemon flavored dough pocket with ricotta cheese inside sprinkled with sugar. That was good. The best things were the fried dumplings though. They tasted like home made doughnuts.
