Next time you break your glasses and are also craving yogurt, look no further than Clear. I never in the world thought that I'd use both services on one visit but I had a pair of Smith Sliders that mysteriously lost a screw on one of my cycling outings. I knew Clear didn't sell Sliders but they were able to find a screw that worked. Even better, they only charged me $5. While I was waiting for my glasses repair, I enjoyed a fantastic Mango yogurt with some coconut sprinkles on top. I have to say, Clear makes some of the best yogurt I have had in the bay area, and at a pretty reasonable price. To me, yogurt is all about taste and consistency. Lot's of places make good tasting yogurt but they often fail in the consistency department because the yogurt is too watery. The perfect yogurt has to be firm enough to hold the spoon up and Clear delivers. My only knock on Clear is that they have menus all over the place. You have to look one place for ice cream and another for yogurt. If you don't believe me, just look at the person ahead of you in line and watch them try to figure out what in the world to order. A consolidated menu board would be nice. I also wish they had a few chocolaty offerings as they are very heavy on fruity options. All in all, this place well deserves 4 stars! read more

I haven't worn glasses for close to ten years after having lasik surgery, but I wanted to get a pair for distance. Every time I look at frames I can never find any that I like. This place has so many glasses and their staff will work with you to help you try on as many as you want. I probably tried on over a hundred, and set some aside as I went. Narrowed it down to 5 or 6, then spent time going back and forth between them all before finally picking out a great pair. They said it would take about a week, but then they gave me a call to let me know they were ready early. I love being surprised like that. You get a free yogurt too, and that is also delicious, but it's a little strange to have a split yogurt and optometry place. read more

As many times I've been here I haven't wrote this place a review. I found this place on Yelp 2 years ago when I was looking for IC Berlin frames. I was comparing prices and this place was the cheapest out of all the places I was checking out. Since then I have referred my parents there because of their outstanding service and selection of frames. I recently bought prescription Dita sunglasses and having my lenses updated in my old frames, and of course the service was excellent. I love that this place also offers froyo which is very good too. From the looks of Clear Optometry, you would never guess this store would serve froyo, ice cream, gelato, coffee, milk tea, and cupcakes here. The store is very clean and modern-looking. It actually looks pretty fancy/stylish. When you enter the store, you'll see the refresh bar on the left side and the eyeglasses section on the right side. I originally came here because I wanted to try their froyo; however, Ici Ice Cream caught my eye. Ici Ice Cream in San Mateo?! I was surprised, yet excited because I no longer have to go to Berkeley just to get Ici's. There was a good amount of flavors to pick from. Between the two of us, we shared a single scoop of Ici's Earl Grey. It was a pretty big scoop. You can definitely taste the earl grey flavor. It was very delicious, light, and refreshing. This is my NEW favorite froyo place in downtown SM (although I believe there is at least 1 other froyo shop opening on B street...). Yogurtoulle of course has the 10 different flavors and self-serve and all...but self-serve does have some drawbacks, specifically concerning sanitation and crowding. Last couple times I was there it was just a madhouse...kids poking their fingers in the spigots etc, toppings not clean and so forth. It's more of a kids' place than a restful refreshment break. Next door to Clear is Quickly which serves (amongst many other items) tart froyo with your choice of toppings. Their tart is more tart than Clear's actually, but they only have plain mochi - and for me at this stage, it's all about the mochi! Now as far as CLEAR goes - their tart yogurt is more of like a 'hint' of tart, rather than really tart like Quickly's. Clear only serves 2 flavors - tart and one other than rotates (today it was lychee, which my nephew, who is a Yogurtouille fan that I am attempting to convert, opted for - other days it's been mango, guava, etc.). However, it's really all about the TOPPINGS here. They have a vast array of mochi choices - someone said 6 but I think they have more...just from memory: 1) plain 2) Ghiradelli chocolate 3) green tea 4) strawberry 5) cherry 6) iberry (haven't tried it but it's a new flavor) 7) lemon 8) orange Plus a plethora of fresh-cut fruits, the usual granola, cereals, chocolate and yogurt chips, chocolate-chip cookie dough, M&M's, nuts, syrups etc. etc. Like I said, it's ALL about the toppings and I'm all about MOCHI! The Ultimate Starter is highly recommended - comes with 3 toppings of your choice. Flavorful and the combination of the mochi along with the creaminess of the yogurt (I think someone earlier said it was similar to a tart DQ ice cream mix) especially this weekend which has been hot, is the bomb! BTW I always pick all mochi for my 3 toppings. The yogurtistas (?) always do a great job of making a beautiful presentation and ensuring that plenty of toppings are included! Love the way they create a 'well' in the center of the contaner to place the toppings in. Gorgeous and easy to eat with the toppings evenly distributed in each bite. The ambiance is CLEAN, quiet, restful, grown-up. And of course all that cool eyewear along the wall is fun to look at - I was there at 9:15 this Friday and darn if they didn't have an optician there helping folks look at frames! Other folks were sitting on comfy chairs/sofas, eating their froyo and reading magazines. The only drawback is that at this point, the froyo side of the business is cash only. After a year without glasses, my eyes were starting to dry out from constant contact lens wear. They were also a really old prescription, so I needed to get them updated. I stumbled across a Groupon for $150 off of frames at Clear Optometry - after seeing all these stellar Yelp reviews (and the potential for froyo), I made an appointment. The storefront is very clean, sleek, and they have the latest technology. I was very pleased with my interaction with the optometrist, who was very accommodating and honest with me about my crappy, neglected eyeballs. I was too poor to order both glasses and contact lenses, so she sifted through a box and gave me one pair of lenses with my new updated prescription. Then, I went to go shopping for frames! The frames they carry are very high-end designer (who knew that Tiffany & Co. made prescription eyewear?). They have a decently-sized selection, but it's not very huge (compared to, say, Kaiser). I narrowed down 5 that I liked, then I asked for price checks. A couple were priced at over $400, so I nixed those immediately. I eventually picked red Chanel frames - with the $150 Groupon, the price wasn't too bad. The turn-around is amazing! I ordered my glasses on a Saturday, they called me for pick-up the following Wednesday. AWESOME. Because I was a patient, I got a voucher for some free yogurt! I had mango with fresh mango topping, and it was delicious!!! They also have Ici ice cream (the owner picks up tubs every week), but I live in Berkeley so I can have Ici whenever I want. :) read more

Do I review the yogurt or do I review the optometry? Hmm... Yogurt. It's surprisingly good for an optometrist. LOL. I'm a sucker for lychee yogurt and as far as San Mateo goes, they probably have the best. I like it better than Yogurtouille. To go with my yogurt, I usually pack on some lychee jello with some lychee bits. I said I liked lychee, didn't I? The biggest downside to Clear's yogurt is that I've grown accustomed to DIY yogurt. They make the yogurt for you so often it's more than I want -- usually I just want a small fix. But I guess by not being DIY, they are trying to target a more upscale experience. Dr. Lok Chan is very thorough in her exam. Plan to spend at least an hour here. It's more like 30-45 minutes unless you want to get your eyes dilated. Then definitely plan for an hour. You'll also want some time to look at frames since you're here anyway. Oh and eat yogurt. Both Cindy C. and I ended up getting sunglasses here because we had some VSP and FSA benefits to use up. The staff here was really nice. They offered us free yogurt while we shopped. Granted we were about to plunk down about $400 each here so it's probably the least of their worries. A friend introduced me to it and to date, it is the best tasting frozen yogurt I've ever had. The portions are huge. I've been coming here for over three years now, and I think I should share the wealth by writing a review. This is the best optometrist I've ever been to. Not just because the space is beautifully decorated, the staff is super professional, not to mention they have an extensive dessert/tea bar in the front (serving Ici Ici from Berkeley, Sibby's cupcakes, delicious froyo and boba drinks)--but you will get a very comprehensive and patient exam. In the past, when I've been to an optometrist, I usually expect to wait past my actual appointment time and then a cursory exam where the optometrist seemed like they were just going through the motions. Premium luxury brands are generally expensive but when you add VSP coverage then you can chop off about half or more of the cost. Also, this place has FROYO?! During one of my regular visits to Quickly, I noticed the inviting atmosphere of Clear Optometry. "Come in..." it beckoned, "we have beautiful eye glasses and also delicious frozen yogurt..." "What?!?!?!" I thought. But they had a sign in the window showing that they accept VSP, and I need a new prescription, so... I was intrigued. I had to find out more what was going on in this place. Like a shipwreck survivor stumbling into a foreign land, I warily approached the lady behind the counter and proceeded to grill her. She was wonderful, helpful, tolerant, and knowledgeable. My skepticism disappeared. I made an appointment for the same week. My appointment with the eye doctor was very long & thorough (more than 1hr- I actually got a ticket because my meter expired!) Despite needing to try a zillion different kinds of contact lenses before finding the right ones, she was reasonably patient. AND, she hooked me up with complimentary Fro-Yo with their CUSTOM MADE strawberry mochi- so delicious! I didn't get any glasses, but they did help me to work the best deal out of my insurance &rebates, and their prices did beat online contact vendors. Overall, a pretty great experience. I can't really recommend the optometry part of this store. I don't wear glasses but things at a distance are blurry, so I thought I'd get a check-up. The doctor gave me an exam but wasn't that personable and told me there was nothing wrong with my eyes. Another optometrist in the past had told me I had an astigmatism, but I couldn't afford glasses at the time. Anyway, the doctor's manner at clear optometry isn't that nice. I wouldn't go here. Here's a good one: if you don't purchase a frame from them, even if it's a well-regraded international brand, Lindberg, they will neither service it nor sell you a part for it, such as a nose pad. Why? Liability. Perhaps there is concern that one might swallow and choke on a nose pad? It's about the size of a small crumb, so I'm certain that is not it. Not only would they not even sell me a nose pad, but they were smug (the store manager) and completely unhelpful. Go back to where you bought it, he says. I would, but the store is in Philadelphia, I respond, and you are an authorized dealer in the Bay Area I responded, to which he replied: "I'm sure you could send it and they will mail it back." I can't imagine service being much better, otherwise, if they can't help a prospective new customer with something as basic as a nose pad. read more

I was here mainly for the cafe portion so I can't comment on the optometry side of the business. It was my one and only experience here but the drink was good. So if you're aiming for review strictly on taste and service, this would be a solid 5 star. Otherwise, read on. Pros: I got a large mango lychee ice tea I believe. As mentioned above, the drink is actually quite good. The decor wasn't bad (pretty modern) and the environment was pretty nice. It was a hot day and they had air conditioning. Service was stellar. Their bathroom is quite clean and nice. Cons: Cash only, no wifi, and no place to plug in your electronics. Seating configuration not great. This was mainly why I came here. Overall, would rate 3.5 stars if I could but between the two, opt for 3 stars mainly because the cons were more important to me overall. Since when was there a cafe in San Mateo that served blue bottle?! I peaked in the window and saw that it was not a cafe. It was an optometrist. Wat. I was in disbelief so I went to yelp to check, and sure enough, yes, there is an optometry that served coffee, fro-yo, Ici ice cream, boba, and glasses. What a time to be alive. After having lunch in the downtown area, I went over here to grab a coffee. Oh man, the whole time I was ordering, I was just in awe. As I was ordering my coffee in the modern space, there was someone sitting behind me getting fitted for their glasses. I wish my optometrist served blue bottle and ice cream, Geez get it together, Lenscrafters. Just kidding. Kind of. I ordered my usual New Orleans Iced Coffee. While I waited, I checked out their other selections. My boyfriend looked at their glasses. I had recently tried Ici for the first time in Berkeley, so I was tempted to try it but I just had a tuna sandwich. I was trying to be "healthy" I guess. The coffee was great, as blue bottle usually is. The staff was friendly, and I knew I was going to come back. How could I not? I've been here twice so far--once to get their delicious froyo and the second to get Blue Bottle without going all the way to the City. They have two options for Blue Bottle--the single-drip or the New Orleans Iced Coffee, which is what I was looking for. Perfect to take to the library down the street to study with. When I first saw the grand opening sign months ago I did a triple take. But yea, its true -- an optometrist AND a yogurt shop in one! I hear somewhere that they actually make more $$ from the yogurt than the glasses. Sometimes it doesnt hurt to think outside the box! Their yogurt is very delicious. I gotta say, before they opened, I thought it was just going to be a fro yo shop (cuz that's what the sign advertised!)...and then it opened and it was an eyewear store...i was disappointed. And later, they started selling fro yo as well. Strange combo! I still think so. It's just so random. Normally, I like random, but I thought it was too weird a random for me. Later, my friend kept telling me to try their fro yo. She was all about it! She loves it. So I finally tried it. I liked the ordering experience. The guy who helped us out was very friendly and patient. (the rest of the staff was friendly too) He even gave us samples of fro yo and the chocolate cake that you can get as a topping! He recommended the home made mochi and man, was it good! We got half a cup of original tart (which wasnt so tart afterall) and the other half mango (which was good, but also not all that tart) and then home made mochi on top. It was delish! The only thing is that it's one size. So you have to eat that much, not like it's a problem... and its $3! what a deal! 2 flavors plus mochi in a cup that size anywhere else would be $4 and up. read more

I'm actually reviewing this place prior to trying either of its services, but only to let people know what (I believe) the premise of this place to be. I love great design, and it's immediately obvious that the owners of Clear have a great eye, as well as sense for a successful business model! The interior is clean and modern; a well-lit white oasis with dark brown seating accents and a refreshing splash of green. On one wall is an impressive array of glasses done by well-known fashion houses/designers, which is immediately tempting to me since I've never found such a comprehensive, beautiful display of them. They will accept VSP members starting in August for optometric services, and I'll definitely be back to see how they are. I talked to one staff member, and was enlightened about the unique "refresh bar" + optometry combination. The owner has an optometry practice, but she also recognizes the value of making it a luxurious experience by offering a secondary service, which comes in the form of refreshment. In this crazy-fad frenzy of frozen yogurt, they've set up a great frozen yogurt offering (I tried a sample of the lychee and enjoyed the fact that it was not as tart as other places). But here's the best part. They've specifically named it a "refresh bar" so that they can change the edible spread over time - it's NOT purely a frozen yogurt place. So when it's in the dead of winter and people are looking for something warmer than an icy treat, or after the fad has passed, they can adapt/update their refreshment(s) similarly. Furthermore, the treats (yogurt and tea, when I browsed through) are complimentary for their customers while waiting! That just tickled me pink because it elevates an already nice experience in a well-designed environment into a true pampering session. In this consumer-centric age of services and image, this really stands out. Of course, the refresh bar is also open to the general public, for reasonable prices. I am SO impressed by the business model of this place. You can tell how much thought went into its establishment, and I hope that it will be successful. Was at Shabuway across the street and spotted a sign that said froyo. First thought...froyo in an optometry? This got to be interesteding. Went inside with my girls, and each of us ordered a froyo. I had a sample of the tart and lychee flavored. The lychee flavored was super sweet. The tart wasn't too tart but at least not as sweet as the lychee, so I went for that one. The texture for both flavors was quite icy and dense. Clear Optometry also likes to put the toppings in the "hole" of the froyo. So you don't really get that much of toppings but you get lots of froyo. The pricing is okay since you do get a lot of froyo. This place also offers different flavor mochi, which I think is the best thing they have. The surrounding and decor are okay. Comfy couches, but just weird because the sales from the optometry look at you sit down and when you eat, probably hoping you'll look at glasses and buy them or something. read more

When the TenRen on 3rd Ave closed down about a year ago, I was not too surprised. The pearl tea there had sucked for a few years, and the foot traffic was lacking. Immediately after the closing, I was very intrigued to see what would replace it in this prime location. I must say, I am utterly confused by the store that just opened up. Is it an optometry shop or a FroYo place? I really have no idea. There has been a proliferation of optometry stores recently in downtown, so maybe this is a differentiation point. But, I just don't understand the FroYo as lead generation for high-end glasses. I did try the FroYo (did not drop a paycheck on a pair of glasses). The smallest size for me was too expensive (over $5 with toppings) and too large as a dessert serving. I really wished they had a size I could eat in one sitting for $3-$4. The toppings were fresh. Store markets themselves as high-end optical shop. However, I bought a pair of glasses at a cost of over $850. Within months, the frame kept getting loose. I had to go back 3 times in the first year to get a screw put back on and tightened. Despite my initial protest that the frame be replaced, they said no. I finally insisted. "T' did it, claiming to "do me favor." They replaced my glasses. I am on month six of the second set of glasses when the frame literally fell off the lenses and fell on the street. It is just junk. "T" is wiling to send it back to manufacturer, to see if they will replace the frame. Why would I want a frame that is constantly falling apart? And be without glasses for weeks...and the time it takes for me to constantly be calling and/or running back for repairs? "T" wants me spend another $600 for the progressive lenses for another pair of glasses. He actually said to me that I wasn't wiling to buy the more expensive frame. Perhaps so. But, I do expect any frame that is sold in a shop to be worthy of buy lenses for. So, its my fault for choosing a less expensive frame? Shouldn't every frame last more than a few months without constant repairing and replacing? A store selling at these prices should not be selling junk and if they make the mistake and do, they should do right by me and eat the cost of a pair of glasses, and if there is a cost difference on the frame, then I pay that cost, but not have to buy my lenses again. You cannot take the lenses and use them for different frames. It is clear THEY DO NOT CARE whether they have happy customers - and need to make a profit on every customer. They put this on you - the customer - as your problem that the frames cannot handle normal daily use. I have outdated glasses that are over 15 years old. Insanity. One pair of Airlocks didn't make it a year. Clear Optometry would not make this right. read more

I must say I love this place. The yogurt and all of the toppings are fresh and the amount you get is overwhelming. It seems expensive until you see how much you get. I am also attracted to the cleanliness and comfort of the shop. I know only the people serving are handling the food as opposed to a self serve where anything goes (maybe in your food). They now offer Ici ice cream and sibby's cupcakes in addition to their popular yogurt. I tried the earl grey and the honey lavender ici ice cream and it was great! Yogurt's good here, but I've never gotten glasses. Desserts: they have cupcakes from bakeries, tart yogurt, other little cake things, and various mochi topping for your yogurt if you are a mochi love (i am not). Glasses: they have many brand name glasses here, so if that's what you need this would be a good neighborhood place to go to, especially if you want to keep your kids or other adults occupied with dessert here Atmosphere: i like the leather sofas they have and the counter with high stools to divide the space between the desserts and the glasses. very classy and nice, and the yogurt isn't overpriced for the atmosphere that this is read more
