So, I am absolutely shocked with my experience with this place and had to make sure no one else went through this experience. The doctor checked my number and said I had astigmatism. I've never had astigmatism and so I was surprised. I got the glasses made with them, I started getting a headaches with these glasses - because clearly I don't have astigmatism. I got my eyes checked at another optometrist and they confirmed I don't have astigmatism. I called 20/20 optometry back, they took another exam and still stuck by their prescription. Did not refund me for the glasses infact charged me again for the exam. I finally threw the glasses and got my checked at another optometrist and got my glasses made again. read more

I do not enjoy making or going to eye appointments or dentist appointments, however I've been here 3 times already and had such a great experience that I am writing this review. Across the three visits, I have never experienced a wait time. The staff are super friendly and transparent and Dr. Na is very clear in explaining his area of expertise to me, a lay person. I read the reviews of 20/20 Optometry and saw so many good things, so I decided to make an appointment here for my first eye exam in years! The staff here are AMAZING. They were incredibly helpful in getting me checked in and explaining my coverage AND they were so nice. Definitely left with a smile on my face from that interaction alone. The Doctor was also great! He really got to the bottom of some of the issues I'd been having over the years and did a great job making of explaining some of the likely reasons behind some of them. I recently saw Dr. Na for a routine eye exam and contact lens fitting. I have a very complicated prescription and Dr. Na took the time to go through multiple fittings and provided multiple trials lenses to test. I have never experienced this type of thorough, detail-oriented service with any other doctors before. I was also able to schedule a same-day appointment when I had a contact lens stuck to the top of my eye. Additionally, the two ladies at the front desk are very nice and friendly. I used to go to 20/20 Optometry, back in 2006. Dr. Tom was always very nice. The staff was not very friendly and not very organized. Then Dr. Tom left, so my reason for going there diminished. When it came time for my annual checkup I switched to Eyeworks on South B, which I love and have recommended to a few people. Since leaving 20/20 they have called me a few times to see if I would like to make an appointment. In late April 2009 I received a bill from a COLLECTIONS AGENCY for services from January 2006. I called immediately and requested the information. I have a discount plan through Blue Cross so normally pay a discounted amount at the time of service. The agency mailed me the information that they had. I called 20/20. I called my bank. I called my insurance company. I was never able to find record of the services. I don't think that I owe them the money. 20/20 Optometry never mailed me a bill until they submitted it to collections THREE YEARS LATER. Under protest, I just paid the bill. If I hadn't paid by the end of the month it would go against my credit. I was told by the agency that the company has five years to submit a bill. Evidently there are no consumer protection laws for this sort of thing. Ahh but there is YELP and the Better Business Bureau. Did I mention that they charged me 10% interest since the alleged service date in 2006? Yeah. read more

Major rip off.... Dr. Na asks too many personal questions - where you work, what you do, even if I was already hesitating in answering... Just to be polite, I gave some info on what I actually do.... The eye tests were thorough though... But when it came to charges - would you believe they charge the same price for whatever frame you choose??? I asked, is that true? So if I choose Juicy or Armani, its the same $300 like some unknowns like Tura etc....??? The lady there said - yeah, so its pretty easy for them to memorize how much they are? For their convenience, she said. Are they that stupid to use the same price tag for everything "so that its convenient" for them to keep in mind the prices?? Total rip off!.... I havent chosen/ordered my frames yet til my next visit... I might just ask for my diagnosis and purchase the frame/lenses some other place... read more

Summary: great doctor, horrible service and expensive prices Longer version: Went to Dr. Na since he was covered by my vision insurance and it was close to home. The actual examination was very good; Dr. Na answered all my questions and took the time to make sure his measurements were accurate. Was very satisfied until it came time to settle the bill. The contacts lenses exam was $100(!) in addition to the comprehensive exam (which was $200), and even with insurance I would have had to pay $60 out-of-pocket for that exam alone. In actuality I paid almost the full amount, since insurance could only be used if I opted to purchase contacts lenses through them at inflated prices, something that was not communicated to me at all. As for the glasses, they refused to provide me with a PD, which is required in order to purchase a pair of glasses at any location. This practically forces me to get glasses at their clinic, which only carried frames at marked up prices that my insurance would not fully cover. At the end of the day, despite having comprehensive vision insurance, I still paid $124 out-of-pocket, and can't even order glasses without another exam. EDIT: Bumping this up a star. After I made my dis-satisfaction known, I immediately received a call from someone trying to rectify the situation. In the end, I was able to get a PD by signing a waiver. But the prices are still ridiculous. read more

I have been a patient of both the 20/20 in San Mateo and also their other office in San Ramon. Both offices are welcoming and friendly with very personable doctors. The staff is great at helping pick out glasses and answering questions regarding contacts. Having been in the eyeglass business before I moved here, I can recognize great service. And I have had nothing but great service here since I moved to the Bay Area. Also, I just want to add that a contact lens training is necessary for anyone who has never worn contacts before. Yeah it may seem like a simple process but what if you cant get a lens out of your eye?? It happens. They show you how to remove the lenses properly so that you can be self sufficient....not to rip you off. read more

I absolutely love dr. Na. He gives a very thorough, detailed exam and have always felt very taken care of after seeing him. He's sensitive to my VERY high prescription and works so hard to make sure my vision needs are met, especially since I have to custom order contacts and glasses. The quality of service has by far been the best I've received and I've been seeing eye docs for decades. You get what you pay for and their quality of service is definitely worth it. First time coming here, and I'm satisfied! Don't hesitate because of the bad reviews; this place is great; I highly recommend coming here for your eyes!! I'd had my glasses for almost six years, so I figured I was long overdue for a visit. The receptionists and the doctor were really nice! It's pretty small, but it's clean and cute and there's comfortable chairs and magazines to read. I like how they let you walk around their office with (pretty strange looking glasses) so you can get a feel for your new prescription! I didn't have time to get my eyes dilated, so I really like that they let me reschedule my dilatation within a month still free of charge! The whole appointment took about 45 minutes overall, and they gave me a copy of my new prescription (the one for glasses though) right away. I'm definitely sticking to this place for my eyes! They also take a wide variety of insurance so your's is probably covered!! read more

I've seen Dr. Na for over 8 years, I live in SF and willing to drive to San Mateo because he and his staff are so excellent. Dr. Na is thorough, sensitive and diligent with details. He offers options for types of contacts and glasses products, costs and explains the differences. He is always concerned with my vision quality and constantly pays attention to my benign cataract. The staff are well informed with insurance coverage and helpful to select models of eyewear. I entirely recommend 20/20. read more

We have been really happy with 20/20. My husband and son wear glasses and have been seeing Dr. Na for a few years. The eye exams are thorough. Dr.Na takes time to answer any questions you have. And the staff seem to be very helpful and professional. The prices seem high. We have great insurance and we still pay a good amount out of pocket. It would be nice if they had the prices on the frames they have on display. Instead they are coded and you have to walk around with a person and keep asking "how much are these, how much are these?". I haven't price compared as of yet. But I might just to see how much less I would pay at an optometry dept. located in a large department store. I will update my review if I find a significant savings. Otherwise 20/20 are worth paying a few extra dollars. read more

I have been a fan of Dr. Na ever since his office accommodated me at the very last minute a couple of years ago. One day while at work I scratched my eye and had to see the nearest eye doctor right away. I called a couple places in the area but nobody was available to see me in such short notice. I then called 20/20 and I was told that they were booked that day but that they'd make an exception to see me given the severity of my injury! At first I was a bit skeptical due to some of the not so nice reviews however, once I got there I was greeted by the staff right away. After I filled out some paper work Dr. Na came out to greet me. Once he examined my eye I was relieved to know that it was "just" a minor scratch and although uncomfortable I would be fine after a few days! All in all I was in and out of the office within 30 minutes. Not sure why there are some negative reviews on Yelp. I take it that some of these were written before Dr. Na took over this business. Even though I live in San Francisco (and my go to eye doctor was in San Francisco as well) I have since switched to Dr. Na. Aside from the quality care that I get, I also love their selection of eyewear. They carry all the top brands and latest designs.... and in case they don't have them in stock they will order them for you! read more

Oh, 20/20 I hate you guys so much. You guys really deserve a 0. Every time I think about you I cringe. You guys are a rip off and treat patients so badly. Not only did you guys take more than a month to give me my contacts, but when I asked for new ones (as they are MONTHLY contacts -shame on you, you of all people should know better!), your really bitchy (excuse my french) receptionist rudely talked like she was the almighty. Then 2 weeks later, you charge me $40 again for god knows what before you would give me my contacts. You guys are jerks. Not only are you expensive, but you give out generic stuff so you can make more money off of us. I would rather go blind then go back to you. read more

San Mateo office: The absolute worst!!!!!!!!! I had changed providers and decided to find a local place to do business with. After setting an appointment, I show up early to fill out paperwork. They were unable to answer questions I had on the form, then I had to wait 15min past my sheduled time to see the doctor. He was in such a rush the exam was only 5min!!! AND he comments "Your eyes are aweful you should get bifocals" Well I was shocked as my eyes have never been all that bad. The plot thickens.... I go ahead with his sugestion and even select quality frames. 2 weeks later I am told there was a holdup and it will be 2 more weeks, then another week, then finally (you guessed it) the wrong frames came. During all of this I never got much in terms of customer service, just come back later. They even had sugested I take the wrong frames and see if they grow on me. What am I a plant!!!! This place is just not worth your time, better to go to Costco... I did go back to my doctor of 10 years and he said I just needed a slight upgrade and my eyes are doing just fine. BTW this is not the same as the Silicon Valley 20/20 sorry guys read more

Dr. Tom is as sharp as my eyesight has become since I started coming here about three years ago. The staff will always work with you to try to reduce the enormous financial layout required to keep your vision in focus when you have astigmatism, and they fix mistakes quickly and without question. I had a really bad headache back in 2008 that lasted for weeks. One trip to Dr. Benjamin and it's been fixed! As an eye doctor, he's got great skills! Kelly the assistant is great at helping you pick out glasses that fits your style. They do have some fees such as contact lens training that came to me as a surprise which I did not like. The trick is to make sure to ask them to tell you what are the fees before you agree to buy. read more

I finally found a great doctor! I've moved a lot and have been to many, many optometrists and I've always used gas permeable lenses. In the past, a lense would sometimes shift and cause the lense to suction my eyeball (really painful!) or a lense would fly out of my eye and I would be on my office cubicle floor looking for it... Dr. Na gave a thorough exam and answered all of my questions, and I am so happy with my new contact lenses he fitted me with! They are comfortable and don't shift around. I am surprised by all the negative reviews I've read here. I have been a patient for 10+ years (since Dr. Tom took over the business.) My family and I are happy with the service we receive from Dr. Benjamin Na. A few weeks ago, my six year old was sent home from school with pink eye. Alarmed, because I hadn't noticed anything wrong, I called 20/20 Optometry to schedule an appointment. The staff were able to fit us in that same Friday morning - their busiest day. When Dr. Na walked in, he immediately noticed that my child had redness in one eye. My son had an infection, but not pink eye. Dr. Na took the time (and had the patience) to answer all of our questions, including my six year old's on the various buttons and equipment in the exam room. The staff even called the next week to check on my son. Recently, his long time office manager left and the transition with the new staff has been an adjustment. While I find them to be polite and professional, follow up on paperwork could be improved. I expect this will improve as staff gets familiar with the office. read more

Short story: They ripped me off. I'm giving them two stars instead of one because Dr. Na answered all my medical-related questions thoroughly. Long story: I know this is super-cheesy, but I really did join Yelp (1) To give this place a bad review, and (2) To give my former landlords a good review, since I had a great experience with them (and they seem to get a lot of bad ones - they could use the help). Back to 20/20, I was impressed by the quality of care, but I am quite upset with them. First of all, the $160 eye exam fee was exorbitant. My insurance will only pay for $75, but I figured the $85 extra might be worth it since this place was recommended by one of my coworkers. Plus, it's totally my bad for not shopping around more. I would not have given this place a bad review were it solely for the extra $85 out-of-pocket (again, my bad for not shopping around). However, what ticked me off was the additional $125 that the staff TOLD me would be covered. Not only did they lie to me, but also the tests that made up this $125 were pointless. There was $25 for a contact "training fee." I could have figured it out by myself, but I was there, they told me it would be covered, no big deal. THEN there was a $100 "contact follow-up" appointment with the optometrist. He spent 2 whole minutes with me just to say "They fit you fine. Actually, they're a little off, but because they're daily lenses, there's nothing we can do." And charged $100. WHAT?! Well, my insurance company wouldn't cover it in the end, and looking at the codes, I actually don't blame them. (I've had my issues with the insurance company, but in this case I can assure you it is TOTALLY 20/20's fault.) Very valuable lesson learned: Truly assess whether the medical "care" is necessary, even if your insurance will cover it. You don't want to be a drain on the system, and you might wind up wasting valuable time and money too. read more

A couple of years ago I was looking for a new Optometrist. I have been to numerous businesses over the years and didn't really end up liking them for one reason or another. I inquired within my mommy and me group and was given Dr. Na's name. I've actually had appt's at both of his offices, and was really impressed with how friendly and efficient his staff is. Dr. Na is very thorough and quite funny! I suffer from terrible dry eyes and have difficulty wearing my contacts for any length of time. Eventually we found something that worked. He put plugs in, I had never heard of them before, but they made a huge difference!! None of my previous Dr's had ever recommended it. It has been such a relief not to have my eyes so irritated anymore from dry eyes. They also have a nice selection of frames, I am extremely picky and the girls there did a wonderful job in helping me pick the one that looked the best!
