I came in unannounced on Saturday September 27th as I had two pairs of reading glasses in which the hinges had come out of the frames. Calvin promptly started working on them and said he would not accept any money. As he had other customers, I agreed to return on the following Wednesday. He was successful in fixing one of the two pairs of eyeglasses. I very much appreciate him doing that as these glasses have this problem and gets expensive to buy a new pair each time. The optometrist was fine, the young girl helping was fine, the fella who helps with the glasses frame selection is just the worst. I will never go back here, already looking for a new optometrist. The lack of recent reviews looks sus, I would never ever support this place again. I paid $900+ out of pocket after insurance, the anti-reflective has a pit on it but I couldn't see this when picking up because they put my $900 lens order into a dirty demo frame. When you buy here make sure to tell them DO NOT GIVE ME THE WORN OUT DEMO FRAME, you are paying for new glasses not dirty old glasses, tell them you saw this review and you know what they are up to. The frame was dirty and greasy, then the genius clerk tried to adjust the frame and bent the hinge, it is loose after I got them home. Now what am I supposed to do, go back here for warranty coverage from Mr Taco Bell hands? Hell no. This place is all fake, they pretend like they are some luxury boutique but they are just a VSP Essilor Luxxotica churn and burn kiosk. Originally I chose Clear Optometry because it's part yogurt shop, part optometrist. It was such a strange combo that I was like - why not - but I kept coming back because the service was friendly, and I liked the optometrist. It was also walking distance from where we lived at the time. Having just had a really bad experience with an optometrist who up-charged me for an x-ray, tried to set up a second appointment for a eye dilation and tried to add in anti-glare and a bunch of other things to my bill, I appreciated that Clear was very straightforward. In the times I visited I never felt up-charged or pressured into add ons beyond the transition lenses upgrade I always asked for. Clear was always fairly busy whenever I came in, so sometimes I'd need to wait, or the receptionist would be occupied, but I always appreciated just having the time and space to look at frames on my own, and not feeling hovered over. I do wish we lived in this area still because I always found them easy, if not busy, to work with and I'd recommend them if you live in the area. read more

This review is long overdue! I had such a great experience with Clear Optometry! I've purchased glasses here in the past and each time was very pleasant. I went for my annual check up last month, and was on the hunt for new frames. They had very safe measures for Covid, the optometrist was sooo nice, professional, informative, and thorough. And Calvin, the sales person who helped me find my glasses was also super nice, professional, and really good at finding the perfect glasses to fit my face! Most people have a hard time including myself but everything he chose looked great! He was so patient, honest, and attentive. Poor guy skipped his lunch break to help me and all the other customers! Talk about going above and beyond for customer service! He also replaced the padding of my my old glasses l that I purchased there a while back!! They have an amazing selection of glasses. Wasn't going to place a review, but saw another review with almost the exact same experience as I, so I wanted to add my experience as validation. On my fourth pair of Mykita's, a German brand and with progressive lens, about $1k each pair. Having moved to San Mateo from LA, I needed new glasses source and optometrist. My only experience here was to check them out and ask if I could buy new nose pads. Their response, same as what I see elsewhere here, was "did you buy the glasses here." No I said to which they replied "then we can't help you." Terrible service. They seem to think consumer engagement means adding yogurt or espresso. I contacted the executives at Mykita USA, advised them of this dealer's attitude, and they sent me new pads at their cost. I added that I thought Mykita might be better served by a new, better dealer. I see no reason for this eyeglass dealer to exist. read more

I received my glasses, which I paid ~$700 for, almost 3 months after my exam. I told them I needed glasses for reading and working with computers, but I ended up with glasses that could only be used for computers. My vision got worst after using them for a week, so I stopped using the completely. The woman who gave me my glasses told me to bring them back any time if I were to ever had an issue with it. When I called a year later, the technician told me I only had a 4 months period for modifications, and that I needed to come in for a new exam to get the glasses checked. What a lousy bunch! Never again, and I'll report them to the BBB soon. read more

Reminds me of businesses in Asia where you can get married, get a divorce, and get a massage upstairs with a few frills (if you know what I mean). :p Froyo here was fantastic. I got the Sampler size with free toppings. My dog "Jackson Louie" and our resident foster dog "Nathan" join in the "lickin" too! Yummy froyo! They only have two flavors: original & the other one changes daily, but you won't be disappointed. I've been here twice this week! hehe I've had the mango froyo with rainbow mochi & the lycee froyo with strawberries. They give you a whole lot for three bucks (starter size). Don't let the name fool you, the starter size is huge, it's 8 oz and they give you so much froyo and a choice of one topping. The mango and lycee flavors pop out and the froyo is creamy & doesn't melt too quickly. The mochi is great too & the strawberries were sweet enough. Not in the mood for froyo? Get some organic ice cream or gelato. They also offer delicious looking Satura cakes (so close to buying one today) and cupcakes from That Takes The Cake in SF which make great cupcakes. The clean aesthetics of the store is really nice with its modern look. Besides the sweets, stopping by the store may make you tempted to spend more money then you intended because they carry some nice glasses and shades here (like Tiffanys). I was craving some lychee gelato, so I searched it on Yelp and Clear Optometry came up. Must be some kind of mistake... I don't want to see an optometrist, I want lychee gelato! But I was curious, so I clicked in. I then saw the pictures and the reviews and not only was it a optometry place, but also a place for ice cream/froyo/gelato and drinks! From the moment I saw the pictures on Yelp with all the toppings and mochi flavors, I had to try it. The first two times I came here, the same lady was working. The first time I got lychee gelato with green tea mochi and mango agar, the second time I also got lychee gelato, but with rainbow mochi. They sometimes have a honey lavender flavor that I want to try, but somehow I always end up getting lychee. For $3.25 you get a single scoop of gelato and it costs extra for toppings but it's definitely worth it. The scoop the lady gave me was pretty big too. Hands down, the best mochi and gelato! I would give this place 5 stars, buuuut, the third time I came, the lady wasn't there, but a man came out from the back to take my order. I ordered my usual, single scoop gelato and instead of the usual cup the lady uses, the man scoops my gelato into a cup that is 2x smaller than the one they usually give me. (Mental picture: the cup the lady gave me, i hold it with the palm of my hand, but the cup the man gave me, i could hold it like an ice cream cone.) For $4, it was a super small scoop and I got about... 10 pieces of mochi on top that could barely fit. I was not very happy. I think I'll only come when the lady is working... Aside from that, the atmosphere is very nice and it's cool how one side is the refreshments while the other side is for optometry. There is also a lounge area where you can sit. I really like this place and would love to give it 5 stars, but because of that one incident, it gets 4 stars. read more

So, I am hanging out in San Mateo for the day with my sister-in-law and family. We decided to drive down to have one of our usual "foodie days". She pitched that after lunch, we could either get gelato for dessert or maybe have some tea. She says there is a really good tea shop in the area. Tea, it is! After lunch, we look for parking and find a spot in the nearby garage. I ask her what the name of the tea shop is, and she goes, "Well... it's this optometrist... with a tea bar." Say what? We get there, and the place looks high class. Tiffany and Prada frames, shiny high white gloss, bright lights, orchids. It turns out that the owner was inspired by high end optometry shops in Los Angeles, where the stars could enjoy refreshments while having their eyes checked out. Sure, why not? I'm down. Actually, this reminded me a little bit of the kind of service I received while living in Japan -- where you step into a hair salon thinking you'll get a wash/cut/style, and end up leaving with that PLUS a massage and an iced tea. I was surprised by the menu. Local roasted coffee, frozen yogurt, Ici ice cream from Berkeley -- they even had the cones! They had a sign up that mentions they no longer serve Blue Bottle, due to they are cutting back on their wholesale business. I ended up going for Ici's Malted Vanilla Cherry in a cone. Great service and selection of frames! They have everything from Prada to Paul Frank and Salt! The optometrist Ann was very friendly and thorough during my appointment and was very helpful with every question I had. The staff were very friendly and I usually go to Angela but the other associates were patient in helping me pass time picking out frames and also giving me price quotes. Outside of the array of spectacles they have here, their frozen yogurt bar also has HOMEMADE MOCHI! Yes! I'm not going to say that I didn't give this place an extra star because of the frozen yogurt bar inside because i probably did. This place is so hip and necessary in San Mateo! Next time you're in need of a new frame or prescription I suggest checking this place out :) Parking can be tough out here on the weekends but no other real complaints! read more

You would never be able to tell that this was a place with icecream, froyo, coffee or cupcakes from the outside! It makes you feel really cool to be in-the-know hehe. The store is very unique. While some may consider it kind of gimmicky or just plain random to enjoy a froyo amidst cases of glasses (and people requesting to try them on), Clear is able to pull it off well because of the quality of their desserts/drinks and their very classy and minimalistic decor. Froyo is the item that this store is known for, so I tried that. You can get a Sampler (10 oz) size with 1 free topping for $3.25 or you can get the Starter (16 oz) for $3.75 which doesn't come with free toppings (toppings are 95cents for the first topping and 50cents after that). I went with sampler of Lychee froyo with homemade mochi. The froyo was creamy and very silky. The lychee flavor was not too sweet, which was good. I think I usually prefer my froyo more tart though so next time I'll probably get icecream, gelato, or a drink. The homemade mochi was really awesome - you can definitely taste the difference! It was also superrr filling, especially after having a large bowl of ramen for dinner. If I lived closer, I would want to come here with a laptop to work! The environment is very calming and their drink selection (they have Blue Bottle coffee) looks quite good and their icecream and gelato flavors are pretty interesting. Sure it's a place you can buy designer prescription glasses, but did you also know that Clear Optometry is an ice cream/gelato shop? WHAT? I know! It's such a weird combo but such a genius idea that I obvi had to stop in. I'm not in the market for new glasses yet, but I still shopped around and saw some super rad pairs in great colors that makes me think this will be my spot when I am due for new specs. The gelato side wasn't fully functional when I went. No coffee, no frozen yogurt, I don't think they could do toppings either and they were out of 80% of the things their menu led me to believe they had. I wish they didn't over-promise and under-deliver there, but I did love the double scoop I got of Lychee and Guava gelato. Super refreshing and even thought $5 double is enough for 2-3 people, I polished it off all my lonesome. They're severely understaffed right now. They're not taking new customers either as they're down to only one optometrist. I asked to get on their waiting list but they said it's so long it's best if I just go elsewhere. I was able to order glasses through them with my current prescription. When I picked them up, I found out they offered computer glasses but no one bothered telling me this was an option... I only complained about having to flip my glasses on top of my head as I work at a computer all day... While the woman was new and it was an oversight, now I have to either give them back to have them swap out the lenses, or order new frames and have those fit with the prescription. Bah, this could've easily been avoided. All in all, the people there are nice, but they're just trying to get you in and out since they're so understaffed. I've been wondering about this space for the past few months; they had signs that it would be a new froyo place. Today it was open and there was a sign on the outside that said Frozen Yogurt but when I looked inside on the right hand side was a whole wall of sunglasses/glasses. Wait......am I missing something here? I stepped inside and asked about the frozen yogurt - the friendly gal who helped me pointed to the left side of the store and said that was a frozen yogurt place as well! Sunglasses and froyo?!!! I am so there!!! They had 2 flavors, Tart and Kahlua. I tried a sample of the tart (I was stuffed from lunch), the flavor was nice and tart but a bit on the icy side. However the piece de resistance was the different flavored mochi toppings! Lemon, Strawberry, Chocolate, Green Tea....ooohh....yummers. I LOVED the flavored mochi so I much I couldn't even remember what other flavors they had in the toppings but I'm planning on going back ASAP (maybe tonight after dinner!) and updating my review. The space was beautifully designed with dark wood, dark brown leather couches and lots of white. v.v.. posh. Wow, having two businesses partner into one place: a frozen yogurt place and an optometrist under one roof are an interesting combination. I guess, medical research do say, "that eat a daily bowl of fro-yo can improve your vision." We'll see! When I first enter this place, I thought I was in Bebe, Kenneth Cole or some of the other fashion designer places. Since I was here, and I made the use of both businesses, but first I need to feed my belly with some fro-yo. The fro-yo side had two flavors: the lychee and the plain tart. I had a sample of each flavors and; The plain tart was very sweet and creamy. And the lychee tasted like lychee-cream slushie. Both flavors are very unique and really creamy. With only two sizes available, I had the starter size for $3.75, which is an 8oz bowl and medium container in most fro-yo places, but the smallest here. And both flavors being very sweet and creamy, I asked the lady to do one of each flavors in my upcoming 8oz bowl. Also, a yelper told me there were 5 different flavors mochi balls, and I chose the Green Tea flavor as my lone topping for an additional $.95. These ladies don't mess around and are not shy to give me a mountain-size treat. My treat was quantity-wise very heavy and filling. If I go to some of the other self-serve fro-yo places and build my own that fro-yo can easily cost twice as much. I enjoyed my treat on the comfortable leather sofa, which can be mistaken for seats from a Nine-West store. As I was walking around browsing at the displays of designer glasses while enjoying my treat, the friendly lady from the optometry side flirted with me. Coincidently I needed a new pair of glasses and contacts, but the lady told me that they will accept the VSP (Vision Service Plan) program in a few weeks after their contract has been approved. Stay tune for the info. Also, since the frozen treat is Cash only, I hope the VSP plan also covers my bowl of fro-yo. (That won't last long). Understandably, I see finding space is hard to find and the lease is pricey these days. I don't mind a fro-yo places sharing with an optometrist, just as long as the fro-yo place don't share with Weight-Watchers or Jenny Craig. read more

Whoever thought to open an optometry that sells frozen deserts and treats?! Because that person is obviously a genius. I always dread going to my eye doctor for checkups, but if this were my optometry, I would actually look forward to going! Only for the food of course. They usually only have one flavor of frozen yogurt (like mango or lychee) at a time, but I always find them to be really good, especially with the homemade mochi! They have flavors like green tea, eyeberry (don't know what this, but it's a pretty blue), and raspberry, which is my favorite. I usually get the sampler which comes with one topping and get mochi since it's super fresh and chewy. They also serve Ici ice cream, which I love love love. It's great because I can get my ice cream fix even when I'm home instead of in Berkeley. One more thing, the Blue Bottle New Orleans Iced Coffee is amazinggg. I've ordered it from other restaurants and from a Blue Bottle kiosk itself, but none can beat the one that Clear Optometry brews. They have it down perfectly and it always is consistently delicious every time I go! i applaud the creative use of space and unique business model for this optometrist's office. come in, see the eye doctor, then have a cup of ice cream or froyo while relaxing on the leather chairs. or, if you're not the patient, then just come on in and enjoy a frozen treat and relax. i'd been here in the past, but not for a few years, so i was eager to see if there was anything new on the menu. aside from their usual ice cream, gelato, and froyo offerings, they have added cupcakes (regular and mini) to their menu. since i love both cold treats and baked goods, i decided to get one of each: **small cup of coconut thai tea ice cream ($3.25) - delicious and refreshing, with sweet coconut and thai tea flavours mixed in. would have been nice if the single scoop was bigger, but the ice cream was great. **miniature red velvet cupcake ($2.25) - moist red velvet cake, with a light cocoa flavour, topped with silky smooth cream cheese, and garnished with a blue sugar flower (guessing gum paste since it tasted better than fondant). good cupcake, but a little overpriced considering this was a mini. i really love the layout and seating area as it is spacious and relaxing. staff is polite and friendly. although a bit on the expensive side, their products are solid with crowd-pleasing flavours. read more

I came to visit during my spring break last week, and was blown away by how amazing the froyo and mochis were! Hands down to the best froyo I've ever had! I have recently become a froyo-lover, and when I first got in town to visit my sister living in San Mateo, I asked her if there were good froyo places around. And then she said to me, "Oh there's this glasses store that sells really good froyo." At first I was like... "Glasses?! With froyo?!" I was quite suspicious. After a huge lunch at Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot right across the street, I was feeling very full and slightly sick from my meat overload. As we were walking back to our car, I saw this classy, design-y sign and asked my sister if this was the eyeglasses store that she mentioned earlier. So of course I had to go in and try their froyo despite how full I was. It turned out that the froyo there was the PERFECT thing to have after such a heavy lunch. It tasted amazing. I ordered a sample size of original yogurt with one topping.I love mochis and they had a variety of different flavored mochis to choose from (I was literally standing there for 30 seconds not knowing which flavor to choose). After taking advice from my sister, I went with the green tea mochis. To gonna lie, they were a little scary looking, because the colors were much darker than the normal shades of green tea. However, it was a perfect choice, and the mochis along with the froyo was a perfect combination of taste. The froyo itself tasted amazing too - not too creamy or icy, not too sweet and not too sour. It was JUST SO YUMMY! Not to mention, the interior design of this place was wonderful. If I lived close by I would definitely bring a book or my laptop here everyday and just to enjoy the clean and fresh atmosphere. Plus the staff is nice too! AND they serve Blue Bottle Coffee here... even better! okokok 5 stars!! - Cheap for the quantity they give you. $5.25 will get you a heaping quantity. - Definitely not for the tart icy froyo lovers, it's creamy/dense/milky but not traditionally sweet like Yumi Yogurt. - Mochii variety is excellent, custom flavors are super fresh and soft (Plain mochii is generic because it's not purchased from the same vendor as their flavored mochii, not really a fan of the consistency and flavor). - And if you're a guy getting dragged to froyo places by crazy froyo addicts, the servers are cute and always dressed nicely. I stumbled upon this place when I saw a huge sign saying "Frozen Yogurt". First I saw rows of eye glasses.. I frowned, and kept going until I saw a subtle dessert bar on the left. The owner is definitely embracing the new trendy "Pinksberry" hype. PS. you can ask for a small special for $4.25 with 3 toppings which is definitely not a small portion. It's a very smart concept, where you're bringing more business in by attracting them with the dessert bar first, and as people are enjoying their dessert, they're also browsing the eyeglasses. With "Clear" being its name, the essence of simplicity emanates throughout the store, the business card, the customer interface, and the whole brand. Now I know why they get really good reviews. At first my boyfriend and I thought this was the funniest concept for a store: glasses and fro-yo. We finally decided to stop in. The BF made an appointment to get his eyes checked. Luckily, they do appointments on Wednesdays and Saturdays so if your schedule doesn't allow you to come in during the week, this is a good choice. They also give you a card so you can get a free yogurt after your appointment. We stayed there for awhile looking at glasses afterward. So, he ordered Paul Frank glasses, we got fro-yo and his eyes checked all at once! Not a bad deal at all. The fro-yo here is tart flavoured, normally I don't like the taste but the ones here that I sampled were actually quite good. The servings are heaping and the price for a sampler size is $3 including one topping which is a decent price considering the amount you pay for yogurt at other places. They also have pastries from Satura, as well as some other refreshing treats from Ici at the refresh bar. The staff in both the optometry section and the fro-yo counter are really nice. I'm sure we'll stop in again, if not for the glasses/sunglasses, definitely for the treats! We also stopped by their awesome one year anniversary party and were greeted with the same friendly service as usual. read more
