But hey, next week when that doubles to 80 miles, at least Lake County Indiana will know I'm not polluting their air! What a joke. Just make sure you are NOWHERE NEAR a national holiday when you come in, and you should be fine.

I got mail the other day informing me that my plates were due to expire soon, which necessitated a trip to the nearest Illinois Air Team to (hopefully) give my ride a clean bill of health. I visited the one in Joliet at noon on a Friday when the estimated wait time was 4min. The emissions tech was nice; that job must get old in a hurry, so kudos to him for staying upbeat and getting me on my way. There's a small side building off to the right where you can renew your license plate sticker, and that's where I headed. Five people were in front of me, one of whom was arguing with an employee over their failed emissions test. Hey man, it's not THEIR fault your car is a jalopy held together by air fresheners & bungee cords! This guy got pretty worked up and the mood in that tiny space became tense, at best. Should you choose to get your sticker here instead of through Secretary of State, they'll charge a $9.50 credit/debit card transaction fee. Since plastic is the ONLY thing they accept, there's no way around this surcharge of ten bucks (by say, writing a check or paying in pennies). * TL;DR * This review could be broken into two parts: the actual emissions test, and the license plate sticker renewal process. The first part was great, a solid 5*. The second part took a while and drags the overall down to 4*. That side building gets surprisingly hot in the summer, and I'm not a fan of the whopping $10 processing fee....I have enough taxes and sh*t in my life, I could do without this. The website depending on the location, will say wait times but it just has a number like 1 or 4. I wished it would have been more specific like say min or hour. The numbers indicate mins, if you see a 1 then it's just 1 min. The Addison location was easy to find and only one car was in front of me. This was at 12:45 pm on a Wed. Avoid going on Mon and Fri-Sun. When they open it might be hectic because like the DMV, everyone will have the same idea. It's best to go towards the end of lunch, and late afternoon. I came around 4:30 pm and it was dead. The employee that did my testing wasn't rude, just kind of nonchalant. She had me sit on the chair for a minute or less. The whole process was quick.

There were four lanes open and each had three to four cars waiting. I got into the shortest line - three cars and as soon as I pulled up, the first car left. I probably waited five minutes before I was in line to be tested. The test has gotten shorter over the years, probably due to improved technology. You still have to get out of the car so they can complete the test and it was mighty cold out that day. They have an enclosed room where you can wait, but I was not offered the chance to go inside. I imagine it's because the test is so fast now. The car passed inspection. The person who did the test thanked me for coming by - she was very pleasant. This location also has a place where you can renew your plates. My plates are still up to date so I didn't have to go inside but I have used them before and was pleased with their service.
