We partnered with Clawes Carpets about six years ago to install wooden floors on our loft. They did such a good job, we recently went back to them to install carpet runners on my our main stairs to prevent falls. My senior dad lives with us and there's been too many scares of him falling -- as well for myself. Roy, the son of the original owner, came over to measure and provide the estimate - a friendly man who is deeply passionate and knowledgeable about floors. He is easy to work with and absolutely does not give pressure in using his company - I felt he just wanted us to be happy with the final product. Not only did Clawes Carpet continued to provide warm and professional service, but their Fairfax store allowed us to take few samples home to make sure the design was the best one for our stairs. Mike was the one who greeted us at the store and provided us with good options to consider. There was also a very nice lady (sorry I can't remember your name) from their team who called to remind us of our upcoming installation and answer any questions I might have. She was also very easy to talk to and professional. It's day and night difference in how Clawes Carpets treated me as a client compared to big brand stores. Edgar arrived on time, was very focused in completing the job and even went back to the warehouse to cut the carpet as it was snowing outside and he did not want to get the carpet wet. He even vaccumed after installing the carpet! Edgar's attention to detail, thoughtfulness and professional work continues to keep Clawes Carpets as one of the best business to partner with -- also, they're family owned and military friendly. I went to several local carpet stores and decided on Clawes Carpets because they have a larger selection and the staff is friendly. Other places, which I shall not mention, were trying to rip me off on cheap carpets that can easily be found at Home Depot and was being rude about me taking a sample home. The one I chose had to be special ordered and it took another month just for installation, but it was worth the wait. Edgar did an amazing job and did everything I had asked for. It really pains to me write this review because we had Clawes come to our place and do our floors and they did a phenomenal job. But just recently, we decided to have some more work done. The owner came out and gave the estimate. Very nice gentleman. We were given a date and all was set. We worked our tails off to have the place ready for them and they never showed up. So I call and ask if their guy is going to show. The employee says, he should be there so let me check. 30 min later he calls and says the guy told him that he's tied up and can't make it. (Record Scratch).....I said, excuse me, can you please repeat that? He said he's tied up and won't be able to make it today. I said, what's the point of making an appointment then? I took off the morning from work to be home and set them up as well as the previous afternoon to ensure the space they would be working on was prepped. And this is what they tell me...that he's tied up. To say that I'm disappointed is an understatement. I told them that I was thinking of canceling and requesting a refund of my deposit. One of them said the owner would call me. Did I get a call from the owner? Nope. Did any of them even ask what they can do to change my mind and earn my business? Nope! This is odd behavior for a company that is accustomed to getting great reviews but if this is how they are doing business now, it wouldn't surprise me to see if they go out of business. The wife and I wanted to redo the flooring in our family room. We measured up, and I started looking around at materials, figuring that I would do it myself. Everyone I talked to (Lowes, HD, Lumber Liquidators) told me that gluing hardwood directly to an at-grade slab would be fine. Then I talked to Roy at Clawes Carpet. He came to meet me at my work with a bunch of samples of different hardwoods and laminates. When he found out that the wood would be going on an at-grade slab, he cautioned me that yes, it can be done (and that they would do it if I had them install), but that the moisture on a ground level slab can be problematic and that they've experienced customers with solid hardwood buckling when glued down on a slab. We discussed the other options, for both a high quality laminate and engineered hardwood, and I found a gorgeous looking engineered hardwood that came in at a very competitive price installed (saving me the effort of cutting & gluing down the hardwood and getting it done in a timely fashion). Roy told me was going to double check the materials availability, and called me back later in the day to let me know we could setup an install within 7 days, and gave me an installed price. The day of the installation, the crew showed up early (which is rare with contractors!) and got to work immediately. The had the old carpet and vinyl tile up in under an hour, and had all of the hardwood glued down (including new baseboard and quarter-round) within five hours of them arriving. Even though we had moved all of the furniture out of the room prior to them arriving, they offered to move the heaviest pieces back in for us! The floor looks gorgeous - the color and pattern in the wood that Roy recommended is amazing, and we're definitely going to choose Clawes again when we're ready to do the next room! Oh, and they also are willing to sell you just materials, if you're a DIY kinda person. Long and short of it - top quality materials, great service at their showroom (or at your house/work as was my case), quick and efficient install, and a beautiful finish. read more

We had the old carpeting in the upstairs redone with hardwood, and while the folks in the store were friendly and the installers were great, I'm still very disappointed with the quality of the wood. We specifically said that we have a toddler and need something that will hold up well. We started seeing scratches immediately from things like plastic laundry baskets and hampers. I just found another significant one near our glider and it must just be from the movement of sitting down in the chair. We actually called them to ask about it a couple days after installation and were told that that's just how wood floors are but I've lived in houses with wood most of my life and never seen scratches show up this quickly. We had planned on redoing the whole house with them over time but now I don't trust their judgment. read more

I have been doing business with Clawes Carpet for over 20 years, made easy since we lived close by their store. When we moved to Arlington, I wasn't sure if Roy would come outside the Fairfax area. Fortunately he was happy to work with us, even in Arlington. In the last eight years we have replaced the carpeting in our bedrooms, and recently added plank flooring to the main living area. I love that Roy didn't try and sell us the most expensive floor, instead giving us advice as to the best floor for our home and backed it up with specific reasons why, showing how knowledgeable he was about the products he sells. We contracted with Clawes to do our entire upstairs with Bruce hardwood flooring, including a very-difficult-to-do rotunda area. Price was competitive and the crew of six showed up on time and did a spectacular job. They worked so hard - and I noticed they didn't take a lunch break, so at 2 p.m. I went and got them all Five Guys and set them up in the kitchen. They really appreciated that and even cleaned up the table when done. Their work is precision - and I've done many woodworking and flooring installs myself - and the accuracy is tremendous. They worked until 8:30 p.m. and got it all done, with an excellent clean-up as well. This is the company you want to use. read more

I needed new carpeting after being without a dog after 10 years, the carpet was showing its age. Of the research I did comparing Clawes to other "big stores" they by far were the cheapest overall. I was greeted promptly by Melissa (I think) I explained my needs and she gave me samples of different options of carpeting at different but still not overly expensive price points. One of the Clawes family members came out to do the estimate and give me more details about the differences in carpeting and padding options. Their installers took their time moving my bulky furniture and putting it back in place as well as doing the install. FIRST CLASS, what else can I say!!!!!! I can not give enough praise towards Clawes Carpets. This company is family owned and it truly shows!!! The very first time my wife and I stepped into their showroom (Fairfax location) we felt that family/relaxed/genuine atmosphere. Jimmy welcomed us into the store and made us feel completely comfortable and made two individuals who had no knowledge besides "yeah that looks nice" into two people who now have an abundant wealth of flooring knowledge. The best part of having Jimmy help us out was the honesty!!! We dealt with some other flooring stores and major companies and just felt they wanted us to buy the Taj Mahal of flooring and they wouldn't take "no thanks, that's not within our budget" for an answer. Those places kept drilling it into our heads that everything else is inferior and not to even think about it. This is the absolute opposite of Clawes Carpets!!!!! Jimmy showed us the whole spectrum of products (sorry forgot to mention we were looking for hardwood/laminate flooring) that they offered. And yes they do have the Taj Mahal of flooring options but they also have other levels to choose from. Feeling a bit apprehensive that we wouldn't get the same price as we would if we used their installers I was hesitant to bring up to Jimmy that we had a family friend that would be installing the floor for us and that we wouldn't need to use their installers. Jimmy's response, "No worries at all, that doesn't change the price one bit." Man was I relieved to hear that! When you are dealing with over 1,000 sq feet of flooring even adding cents to the price can cause 100's of dollars to your overall bill. Jimmy proceeded to show us products that fit our budget and not only that but he told us the truth about them, and I mean the absolute truth even if meant that a little cheaper product would be the better choice for what my wife and I were looking for. Before the Easter holiday I visited the Braddock location to arrange for getting an appointment for an estimate for removing carpet on our stairwell and replace with hardwood. I was told someone would be in contact after the holiday. After a couple of weeks I sent an email to same person asking for a follow up, but no response. read more

Update 3 and 4:. 5 stars. They showed up when promised and the owner came by twice as well to make sure all was going along properly. They did a fine job. Update 2:. 3 stars. They are working hard to make this right and will be working on a day off. Update 1: 2 stars. The owner, or one of the owners called me and apologized profusely. He said that he will look into how to rectify the situation tomorrow. Original review: Right now it's 1 star. If they fix the situation I will adjust it properly. I will try to remain factual without sarcasm. -I visited the store and got good info from a friendly salesman. -I set up a time for an estimate. I received 2 estimates for 2 separate jobs within the home. That all went smoothly. I went ahead with one order with the intention of doing the second job later to spread out the costs. There was a delay in the carpet coming in, still acceptable. -It came in and I set up an appointment about a week or 2 out for between 12 and 2 pm and asked for instructions on how to prepare the rooms. The scheduler offered to send an email which I accepted. No email arrived. -2 days prior to the appointment I asked left a voicemail for the same scheduler to send or resend the email. Nothing arrived. -1 day before, we spent all day moving small furniture, removing wall hangings, boxing up all loose items. -The morning of the appointment I left a voicemail in the general mailbox at about 8:10 am. No response. -I called back at 10:45(an hour and 15 minutes before the scheduled time frame started and told the person that what I had done for prep to see if it was good. She told me I was set for between 1 and 5 pm. Less desirable and would have been nice to know earlier but at least now I knew. She said the scheduler would call back if there was any question about the prep. No one called. -I waited patiently until exactly 5 pm. No one showed or called. I called and the salesman was obviously stuck in the middle and said the scheduler would call. I pressed him and he said he did not think the installer was coming. -She called, gave an excuse and said that she would reschedule me for Dec 8(2.5 weeks) . I gave her an earful about how my day was wasted, the cats are angry for being cooped up in a tiny room(snarky but true), and my house is in disarray(for nearly 3 more weeks she wants). I told her this is not acceptable and I'll be speaking to the owner or someone higher up tomorrow. -I want to stress that everyone was polite to talk to but they need to realize that time is important to people. I'm sure that they knew they were not going to make it by 5 way before 5. -The ball is in their court to make up for this. They have a looooong way to go to make this a 5 star. read more

This was the second time we had Clawes do some carpeting for us. First one turned out great and the service was good, so we decided to go back. First, they ordered the wrong amount of carpet. Not enough to do both rooms. It was a mistake made by the guy doing the ordering, so I let it go and they did come back a week later to do the second room. However, while they were doing the first room, they broke a glass lampshade. The crew admitted it and told me they would replace it, so I also let that go. Now we're putting the rooms back together. Evidently when they broke the glass lampshade it fell onto my coffee table. There's a big scratch on the top and a divot on the side. And then we found another lamp that is completely broken and we have to throw it away. They HID that lamp behind some other stuff in my garage. All of this happened IN THE GARAGE. WE moved all the furniture out of the rooms so they wouldn't have to do it. I will NEVER hire these guys again, even though the carpet is good and the price was good. The team they sent to my house was atrocious. Did they think I wouldn't FIND the broken pieces when I put the rooms back together? read more

We recently contacted the Clawes Carpets store located at 9541 Braddock Road and spoke to Roy Clawes about our desire to replace the wall-to-wall carpeting in our family room with hardwood flooring. Roy described various options for us to consider and then visited our home to obtain exact measurements. Roy quickly determined that our stone fireplace hearth would be a unique challenge in order to install the hardwood flooring. To install the hardwood properly, the installers would need to precisely cut a hardwood "picture frame" to conform exactly to the jagged edges of the surrounding hearth stone. There are very few craftsmen who have the ability and expertise to perform this customization. Fortunately for us, Clawes has several such expert installers. Our lead installer and crew were meticulous with every detail of their work. They worked diligently and precisely to create a "hearth picture frame." The team then removed the old carpeting, prepared the sub flooring, and installed the hardwood flooring. It was like watching artists at work as the installers determined the placement of the hardwood flooring taking into account the color and length of each individual board. The final result is now a masterpiece of flooring in our family room! We are 1,000% pleased with our new flooring. The quality and beauty of the new hardwood flooring and the precision with which it was installed is spectacular. Our experience over the years with Clawes Carpets, located at Braddock Road, has been superb. They provide outstanding products and excellent installation services! I was aware that Clawes is known for quality but wasn't aware they do carpet cleaning also. Upon calling I was given a date and time when they would come to my house, give me an estimate, and if I was ok, they would clean the carpet right away. This was surprising. I am not in their business but imagined that scheduling work like this usually doesn't work for businesses. I reconfirmed if I heard correctly, TWICE, and was told that I had heard correctly. On the scheduled date and time, they came over, and gave me a quick estimate. When I said that it was good and they could proceed, I was told that they couldn't do it then and there as they had another job scheduled. They understood my point, asked if they could come 3 hrs later, and came back about 2 hrs later. Up to this point - I wasn't too happy but was trusting all the good things I had heard about them. After that - when the work started, I could see their professionalism. I had already moved some furniture and made as much space open for them as I could, but they moved around the big bed and othe furniture at my request. They also cleaned a few rugs and a sofa for me. They were quick, courteous, and did a good job. I am guessing they aren't the cheapest folks to get your carpets cleaned but neither do I think one should look to pinch a few dollars on a task that typically happens once an year. Despite the initial scheduling fiasco, which could have gone horribly wrong as I took the day off to stay at home, I'd still call them again next year and recommend them to my friends - along with a warning to be careful about scheduling. read more

I went to Clawes because I am a busy working Mom and needed the job done right, not necessarily inexpensively. Clawes' install was good, though I did have to ask them to pull out a few defective boards they tried to hide in a closet corner. Overall though, I was happy with the install . . . until I needed them to get a spot fixed/replaced under warranty some years later. They were definitely not interested in taking care of that for me. So I had to keep calling Clawes and then Armstrong. In the end, I pretty much took care of it myself. So I'm not sure it was worth it to pay more money to get a more professional install. read more

After doing business with Clawes Carpets you will be wishing that all of your other business dealing were as pleasant. We just had the first level of our house along with stairs and upstairs hallway carpeted by these good folks. They arrived at ~0830 and were finished by 1500. Despite the size of the job they faced, it was all done beautifully...and that is no exaggeration. To put it plain, they have made our house look even more attractive than when we first bought it some 30+ years ago. This is our second experience with Clawes Carpet, and in both jobs we received world class customer attention, perfect professionalism from estimating the project, scheduling and then (our fault) rescheduling the work, and through the actual install. As you may guess, we can't recommend these folks too highly. As I said, Clawes Carpets sets the bar by which you can measure all of your other contractors. The did excellent work with the hardwood floor. There were some issues with the carpet job. In one case damage was done, but we were compensated by the company. The quality of the carpet was not what I expected, but that has to be on me, since I did not request a sample of the material. Finally, some of the finish work was not well done, but these were minor issues that I was able to fix on my own. read more

After shopping around extensively for carpet, we decided on Clawes. They were very pleasant to deal with and worked with us on the price of the carpet we wanted, beating the price of the same carpet at other stores. They even provided detailed advice on a tiling project I did myself to match the carpet they were going to install (tile adjacent to the carpet). The installers took their time and were in our home for more than 5 hours doing the installation (~900 sq ft). They did it right and didn't rush through it. We had floor and carpet replaced in our entire home. Mr. Bobby Clawes and his entire staff is very friendly, professional and pleasant to work with. I feel they have done an amazing job installing vinyl floor, carpet in our home. Esser and his team of three installed floors yesterday, Edger,Alex and their team of four installed carpet today. All of them were very careful in taking care of our personal belongings, moving them around in recently painted home. They were also very clean and careful of us being around. All our heavy furniture was moved and put back where we wanted after the project was finished. Both teams work very hard and finished on time. I will not hesitate to return to them any time if I need their services.
