Bought the perfect mountain bike for my 6 year old grandson and they said when he outgrew it bring it back for credit on a bigger bike

We've been through Bainbridge Island for years now, but I haven't realized that this shop was close to downtown until recently. It's worth a visit just to see the vintage road bikes that they have displayed on their walls. Only several from their collection are displayed on their walls at any given time, but you can see pictures and descriptions of their entire vintage bike collection on their Web site. Though I didn't buy anything on this visit or have any service done, the staff seems very friendly as well! read more

Echoing other reviews here: condescending and rude are just the tip of the iceberg. Was told that certain bike parts on my bike were "bullshit" and that I should swap them out for something less elitist. Note to the owner: these are just bikes - they're meant to be fun to ride and/or tools to commute - don't take everything so seriously and definitely don't take out your aggression on nice, paying customers. I have worked in several bike shops and know when something is off. Everything just feels off here. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. read more

All those 5-star reviews below about Classic Cycle are legit! I live in Silverdale but drove to Bainbridge Island because of the reviews alone. We went to CC exactly two weeks ago with open minds. We left an hour later with a road bike purchase and an incredibly enjoyable learning experience with Aaron. We never tried to hide the fact that I was a casual cyclist, and Aaron never made any assumptions of my needs. He asked a few specific questions about my lifestyle and what I'd enjoy doing most with a bike. He listened attentively and then went to town. I really enjoyed listening to Aaron as he explained and described different parts of a bike as well as their functions. It was really neat to learn so much from an obviously experienced cyclist who had absolutely no airs about him. And his sense of humor was utterly wicked! After he got a good feel of my budget constraints, Aaron showed me a road bike by Trek, and urged me to test ride it as long as I needed. I was never hurried into a decision. Aaron was patient and professional to a fault, giving me very helpful suggestions as he studied my form while I rode round and round the square outside CC. After a few more turns around the square with a smaller-frame bike, we finally found the right size for me. Because of the Fourth of July weekend, my bike would take a few extra days to deliver to the shop and I was cool with that. I picked up my bike a couple of hours ago, and got to meet the other folks who work at CC. Jaime was really nice and apologetic when we had to wait a few minutes (the shop is busy for good reason!). When I told her I needed to look at helmets, she gave me the lay of the land and explained how I'd know if a helmet would be a good fit for my noggin (side note: I learned just how big my noggin actually was. Woah.). Gavin took his time to fit my bike correctly as well as gave easy-to-follow instructions for cycling form, gear changing, and tire pressure maintenance. Good grief, is everyone just super humble, knowledgeable and sweet at Classic Cycle?! Thank you, Classic Cycle, for a well-rounded and satisfying experience! Really convenient because it's located right as you get off of the Seattle ferry, we rented bicycles to cruise the island with from our friendly host "Trevor" who lives on the island and outlined a good route for us to take based on our experience as cyclists. Nice! The bikes and equipment were good and worked perfectly through all of the terrain on the island including several steep climbs we didn't expect. Nice to know that there is a reliable business to use when cycling the beautiful Bainbridge Island! read more

I have had repeated maintenance problems here on my road bike. I'm not a bike mechanic but I logged 1500 miles in 2020, and I depend on - and I gladly pay for - quality maintenance help. Over the last 18 months: 1. very expensive gel pads were removed and discarded (without discussion or warning) when the handlebars and bar tape were replaced. 2. Front tire was remounted backwards (i.e., the bike computer tab mounted on the spokes no longer communicated with the relay mounted on the front fork; not hard to fix but incredibly inconvenient). 3. One week after a brand new chain was mounted for annual maintenance, part of an exorbitantly expensive tune-up, the master link exploded and the chain failed at high speed. Again, not hard to fix but incredibly inconvenient. Incompetence? Weird pranks? Who knows, but I won't be going back. read more

Amazing, full service shop right off the ferry on Bainbridge Island. They have one of the most economical youth trade-in policies that both my girls took advantage off as they outgrew their last bike. Experienced mechanics and Paul (one of owners) is modest about his riding history while being an amazing mechanic himself. Great clothing, accessories... and the museum aspect is truly amazing. You won't believe some of the classic frames hanging in this shop! They rent bikes too. Worth dropping by if you visit Bainbridge. read more

Super friendly! $25 for 2-hour rental. Nice bikes, comfortable seat, and awesome shift gears! A kickstand is kind of funny but the rack on the front or back is awesome. They have an awesome selection of gifts for people...including recycled gear picture frames, socks that say Classic Cycle, and return to Bainbridge Island if found, and last but not least, the bicycle pizza cutter! read more

Ok, so I never give 5 stars...well...it is a whole new me. Not only was I graciously greeted by the owner, but one of the mechanics (Galen or something) helped me with my saddle height. I thought I was good, but just a centimeter difference feels so much better. On top of that, I was trying to decide between what Sport Beans to buy and the guy at the register (ken, I think) opened up all of them and let me try before I bought. I give it 3 to be in the middle. I went here mainly to look at the museum part, but while there my girlfriend had some questions. The guy was a little pushier than I'd liked about what bike she should get. He was trying to convince her about some bike types that would be a comfortable ride for about 20 minutes, but anything longer than that or going on hills would be torturous for. He wasn't completely pushy, but a little more aggressive about it than I liked. When I contradicted him a time or two I got the impression he wanted to talk to her without me so I couldn't ruin his sales pitch. read more

Another five star rating, and I hardly ever give these out. What is happening to me? This place really goes the extra mile, though, and I know that after only two visits. I brought my bike in for maintenance, and because my ex walked off with my old speedplay pedals; the guys helped me get new ones picked out, as well as fit the bike with some new accessory equipment. When I came to pick it back up again a few days later, they helped me fit my shoes and adjust the tension on the clip-ins, and a woman there gave me some excellent advice for breaking them in safely so that I don't tip over and break my neck by getting stuck. Both times I was there -- dropping the bike off and picking it up again -- the employees were chatting with people who were returning rental bikes, asking them about their experiences and swapping stories. You can tell that they enthusiastically love cycling, and they enthusiastically love cycling here on the Island and in the area. That matters a whole lot. read more

So helpful! Not at all snobby! Awesome people, and customers too! My son was cruising around the store on his Stryder and would not stop, everyone was so sweet and supportive of his riding! Instead of being annoyed! And they switched out 2 bike tires, replaced one, installed a gyro wheel on another and just so fast and then barely charged anything! I was so shocked at the cost!!! I looked for a tip jar!!! I want to say it was Paul who finished the job and rang us up! So impressed, we will do all our bike shopping and repairing here! read more

Jeff (the owner) and the staff (from sales associates to repair shop) are ultra-friendly and knowledgeable. Had a bad experience trying to buy a saddle at BI Cycle so rode over to Classic Cycle and found great service and a nice saddle. Jeff went out of his way to help my husband find a new bike, including letting him ride his own Lynskey and picking up a customer's Moots bike for a test ride. Only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that they don't carry my favorite brand of wool clothing, Ibex. However, they do carry Endura wool jerseys and at least one other brand -- I'll plan to try them to see whether they fit me as well (I'm a bit short-waisted). I have begun to wage a campaign for them to start carrying Rapha (high-end British line for men and, just recently, for women). read more

This is a great shop with AN excellent supply of road and many mountain bikes. The staff are very friendly and even though they have forgot more (Former National Team Mechanics, Pro-Riders, Olympic Development Team, Etc, Etc, Etc) about bicycling than I am going to know they are not snobbish. I went in there during June-uary and the owner pulled out the close out stuff so I could compare Winter Stuff w/ Spring Stuff as I made a decision. GREAT Shop. read more

We were recommended this bike rental place by a local on the ferry. They were friendly, helpful and professional. They were about to close but still let us rent out the bikes for a couple hours (and a couple more dollars). I would definitely recommend this as a bike shop. It's also really close to the ferry which was great. However, I don't know if I would recommend bike rentals on Bainbridge Island. It was a fun way to get around the beautiful island, however(!), there are A LOT of hills. If you are not an avid bike rider, this might not be the activity for you. I wouldn't say this affected their service, but it's something to consider. read more

Winslow has a variety of on-Island offerings, and the best bike shop right in town would be Classic Cycle. They not only repair bikes, they provide excellent advice to the novice cyclist, have a decent inventory of weather-appropriate gear and bicycle add ons, and the employees are pleasant to speak to about our family cycling needs. It is quite endearing to watch children with their first bicycles or learning how to properly care for their equipment, and this store seems to be a great option for locals and the commuter population. read more

I am new to the Pacific Northwest and was initially pleased to find a knowledgeable and well equipped bike shop like Classic Cycle. However, I have had nothing but poor experiences there over the course of the summer. I purchased a like-new specialized road bike from them, but the rear wheel fell off while riding straight along the road shortly after leaving the store. They explained that the person that refurbished the bike only had experience with mountain bikes and subsequently installed a "mountain bike axle" or some other special part that, amazingly, is difficult to keep tight. I was uninjured so I went with it. A couple months later, I bought fenders from them to install myself. Frustratingly, the fenders did not come with all of the necessary screws and parts to attach them to the bike - something that I wish the employee would have mentioned when ringing me up. I had to go back twice for additional fender parts - each time they charged me without offering a discount on what should have been a complete set of parts. At one point they charged me $10 simply to install a screw. After this nickel and diming, life-threatening nightmare, I will not be returning to Classic Cycle. I acknowledge that they are a very capable shop based on the memorabilia strung around the shop and the conversations I heard while the staff worked, but it is not the shop for me - a lay person who just wants a hassle-free bike. read more

I love this shop! I purchased a road bike, that was perfect for my budget, I never felt I was being up sold, I told Paul my low and high end and he nailed it. Very knowledgable explained perfectly the differences between models. What was very nice, the staff understood I'm new to the sport and currently portly, and treated me the newbie, with great respect, no condescension period. What really stunned me was that Gavin the owner spent an hour fitting me on the bike with shoes, giving honest advice about accessories etc. I was blown away. Also the bike history on the sales floor with vintage bikes is worth a trip alone. Good job! read more

A full service bike shop (new bikes, parts, repairs) AND Museum. Jeff, the owner, is a serious bike historian who collects bicycling history including the racing bikes and jerseys of the famous bike racers of the early 20th century velodromes. He's even got the old racing bikes with wooden (bamboo) wheels. Amazing stuff! They also rent bikes just up from the ferry landing during the summer and on weekends. read more

I didn't have such a great experience at the shop. Went in wanting to check out a fairly specific set of bikes. They did have one of the ones I wanted to try (which was great - non of the other shops I have been to have any left because of the time of year). However, when I rode it, it was not well tuned at all - the breaks didn't seem to be making good contact, and the shifting mechanisms seemed less than great. Since I have been doing some shopping around, I know the hardware is completely capable of shifting like butter - don't think it was the hardware, but the way it was adjusted or maintained. When I mentioned this, his response seemed to basically suggest that I didn't know what I was talking about. Besides that, I was even told how to get on the bike (been riding for about 10 years on road bikes, and since I was little before that...thanks for the instructions...). When we asked about a bike stabalizer for our bike rack, the salesperson suggested we tie them on with rope (um...an expensive bike with rope? right.) Needless to say, I will take my business elsewhere (and suggest that my friends/family do the same). read more

Classic Cycle is great for repairs... no questions asked, they get it fixed in 24 hours, and sometimes less. Repair costs have been reasonable. The other cycle shop on the island will tell you it will take 2-3 weeks before the bike can be looked at; you have to know how to ask for a quicker turn around. Classic's location is great - they have just moved to a new location on Winslow Way. read more

I went in here looking to introduce my wife to cycling. I have to say the people here are the friendliest, most considerate, and patient people I have had to the pleasure of working with. They spent the greater part of a day working with my wife.... They took to the time to educate her on the styles, materials, costs, comfort of fitting a person new to cycling. I could not have been more impressed. This review is 12 months later and my wife is still pleased with her purchase (which makes me very happy). They also bought an old trade in bike of mine that was rode hard for several years and gave me a fair trade (even though it's not a brand they sell). I saw the my old bike for sale and i was impressed with how well they fixed her up. You can tell, after speaking with these people for a short time: 1. They love cycling 2. They would love to introduce the world to cycling 3. The take the time to understand your needs 4. They have the patience to make sure you are comfortable and happy with your decision. read more

I commute to Seattle every day and was sick of the buses. I hadn't been on a bicycle in 20 years, so was a bit intimidated. Jamie at Classic Cycle went above and beyond providing warm, thoughtful, and encouraging customer service. At first I rented one of their Felt Cafe bikes to try out for a day. It was a great ride, perfect for a 5 mile jaunt through the city. When I was ready to buy she spent an hour with me helping me choose the perfect bike, and applied the rental cost toward the price of the bike. No up selling, no pressure, just talking and listening and riding different bikes. I am 100% satisfied with the experience, got a great bike at a reasonable price and was treated like a friend. read more

This place has it all, a museum, great bike brands, and a friendly staff. I've gone in there for maintenance and also bought 3 bikes. 2 Trek mountain bikes and 1 trek road bike for my wife. I also got a used bike for my daughter which was reasonable and very well maintained. The shop is owned by a husband and wife team and the employees have been there forever so you know they treat them well. I would highly recommend a visit, even if just to browse. read more

We rented bikes here last Easter Sunday and biked half of the island. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. I wish I could remember the names of the 2 staff we dealt with. They definitely know the island and the best route to go depending on your skill level and the weather at that time. They also know bicycles! Right?! hehe. My husband and I had been contemplating on getting a bike since we live in Downtown Seattle and it was a really good way to test out hybrid bikes and they answered the questions we had. We loved Classic Cycle years ago when we lived here. We moved away for five years and are back, trying to get our salt-water rusted bikes ready for the NW rain. Jaime and Paul have been so helpful fixing up our boys' bikes, and helping me learn how to properly evaluate a used bike purchase so I don't end up buying a fixer-upper needing major repairs. We rented bikes in June 13 from the shed in the ferry carpark (on the left as you walk off the ferry). This location is seasonal and run by Jeff the (former?) owner of Classic Bikes. He obviously knows a lot about bikes and he was extremely helpful and friendly. He set us up perfectly on the bikes, gave us a good itinerary and excellent recommendations for food and shopping etc. We enjoyed having a long chat to him as well. Made our day! read more

I have now purchased 3 bicycles from Classic. I have been more than happy with all three of them. I have purchased a road bike, mountain bike, and a cyclocross bike. I got great advice with each purchase, being told the advantages and disadvantages of the bikes I was considering. Their recommendations balanced my budget with my intended use. I was participating in the Chilly Hilly on Bainbridge Island on February 24, 2014. I needed a place to stow some of my gear and went into Classic Cycle. The people there, were so considerate and friendly. Letting me and other cyclist leave their gear until after the ride. The store was prepared for riders, by having cookies and water available. They were also on hand to give advise about the ride and service for bikes. I was so impressed with their friendliness and willingness to help. I will definitely make future purchases with them.
