If you are looking for something unique to do with a group of friends, in theory, this is a great idea. I realize that Class Axe is relatively new and they have A LOT to learn and improve on. Once the changes are made this could be a really awesome place. Our axepert was very nice, laid back and made lots of corny jokes. The games that we played were creative and have the potential to be more fun than just regular throwing axes and adding up points. However, before this can be five stars the following improvements need to be made: 1. When you arrive at the "meeting location" don't expect to stay there. I honestly have no clue in the world what the point of meeting there is other than to annoy everyone. They tell you you have to be there 15 minutes early but I recommend not following that because then you just stand around forever waiting for some direction. When you sign up online they send you a link to sign a waiver. IF you don't follow instructions and sign the waiver online then you can sign it at the meeting location. Otherwise, you literally have no reason to be there. Even if you didn't sign the waiver yet, why wouldn't they just bring an iPad or something to the warehouse and have you sign it there?? Makes no sense. After standing around forever, they pass out little cards with directions to the actual location. My recommendation is that they just email those directions directly to everyone and skip this step of meeting at a completely irrelevant place. To be fair, the two places aren't far away, but again, what's the point?! Not to mention, the least they could do is make sure the two places are on the same side of the train tracks, they're not (we got stuck behind the train for forever after waiting forever to even get the night started at the meeting place--not fun). 2. Someone needs to get them the weather app because apparently they think they are located in Alaska and it's okay to not have AC. The second we walked into the warehouse we felt a heat wave hit us hard. You instantly start sweating. To put it in perspective, at the end of the night when we walked outside it felt cool (and it was in the 90s!). This is dangerous. One of our group members had to leave early because she got super sick from the heat. It took away from the experience, half way through we were checking our clocks to see how much longer we had to suffer through the heat. 3. What is this wood?!?! I knew right away during the safety spiel that this was going to be different than my previous axe throwing experience because she said that the axes frequently bounce back at you. What?! Why?! When I did this at another location, as long as you followed instructions, your axe would, more often than not, stick on the board. I did not have a single axe stick this entire time, that was the same situation for the majority of the group. This is huge. The reason that axe throwing is fun is because you start competing with yourself (and others) to get better and better scores like darts. If your axe never sticks on the board it just feels hopeless and frustrating. Rather than getting excited to have another chance you start feeling like, "oh it's my turn again? Ugh. Okay. I'll put my beer down and go throw an axe at the ground." 4. Safety. If you can spend an entire night here and not have one moment of questioning whether or not you will end up at the hospital then you are my hero. It's hard for me to fathom how much the insurance for this place must cost. There are no cages behind the axe throwing, the tables where you sit and watch are super close to the people throwing and it's a free for all of people just walking around and doing whatever. Anything can happen at anytime, especially when you throw alcohol in the mix. Beyond my fear for my life while I was watching it also made me feel super uncomfortable when I was throwing. I was so paranoid that I would swing it back and someone would be walking by me that I couldn't fully enjoy the experience and I kept looking behind me not giving it my full force in fear of accidentally murdering someone. 5. This is more of a suggestion rather than a complaint. BYOB is nice because it's cheaper and everyone can decide what they want. BUT maybe they could have a bar and use that money to buy something essential that they are missing such as AC. Other than that. Decent idea! Until these changes are made, I don't recommend. Once the changes are implemented, five stars! read more

Our instructor, Bruce, aka "Professor Axe", kept the competition going between teams and was great in giving a few pointers. Will definitely be doing this again with a group of friends! My sis treated the family to Class Axe Throwing on New Year's Eve. This being our first time, I was not sure what to expect and was a bit apprehensive about the experience. I was also concerned over safety. I have to say, Boss Axe Beech was amazing! She walked us through how to safely throw an axe, and with finesse! I appreciated her watchful eye and critique on my form. It really helped. The games we played were so much fun and entertaining. We definitely plan on returning! This place has axe puns at every corner! A new event, in fact, the first one ever in San Antonio! Dress light as there are fans but no a/c. You will sweat in a warehouse! Safety is taken seriously there and if you even look intoxicated you'll be forced to leave. A fun event where you'll be taught one handed and two handed. Loud, but not ear shattering. A great series of games are played to give different levels of competition with the team as well as one on one! Not recommended for children, but for those adults ready to play give it an extra UMPH! Visited here this afternoon. It is different. Definitely a unique experience. Ya get to throw an axe at the target. There is instruction on how to do it 2 handed or single. They help ya with grip and form. It's not just picking it up and throwing it. Tip of the day, adjust your distance from the target to make sure the axe is at the perfect end of its revolution so that it sticks into the target. Overall had a great time and made some new friends. Just FYI, it's not air conditioned, there are fans, but plan accordingly. It unfortunately wa very warm today. The axe throwing was a great adventure! My husband and I had a lot of fun. There were pros and cons, so I'll go over the cons first. Finding the place was difficult as you start in one spot and move to another. It's not a long walk, but with the heat we decided to drive. The axe throwing is in a warehouse. This wouldn't be a problem except for the lack of air. They did have large fans, but I do wish it were cooler. Everything else was fun. You make up silly names, get a lot of opportunities to throw the axes, and get assistance with your technique. All in all, I would recommend this place. I will likely be going back, but I'll be waiting until it's a bit cooler out. read more

This had to be the coolest Yelp Elite event I've ever gotten to be a part of. Before coming, I was thinking, "oh, we will probably just throw it a couple of times and that's it" but boy was I wrong! We played so many different games with our group. This place is easily missed because there's no signage or anything, it's basically in a warehouse, WITH NO AC, mind you. So come dressed prepared to be hot if you're going in the summer. The instructors are fun and really get you excited to be a "Bad Axe". I love that you create an "axe name", it just makes it even more fun. Mine was "Axe-tra AF!" I knew going in that it was going to be hard, but I didn't realize it was going to be so much fun! I don't know if they don't have air conditioning or if the day I went (July 4th) was just an off day or something, but it was so disgustingly hot that I couldn't even really enjoy the experience. I've been to two other axe throwing places and had a great time, but between the AC issues, meeting at a different location then having to walk or drive to the actual axe throwing location (in a horrible rain storm,) and the equipment here just really seeming to be kinda crappy, I was less than impressed by Class Axe. It was a blast! I'm not terribly coordinated and figured I'd spend the whole time picking the axe off the floor. But with some instruction and practice throws, my wife and I were throwing like pros! OK, we were constantly hitting the target. The games are fun and a staff member stays with you coaching and keeping score. It's BYOB so that's nice. Huge axeman is not the greatest axepert. 20 people were limited to one lane. We had no chances to throw. I've been here multiple times before where multiple lanes were open with only one axepert. They advised us we could park in the back if we'd like. We did, the street was lit there were plenty of other cars parked there. The staff was super understanding and accommodating. Our instructor, Joe, was a gem; he really took the time to walk through all the games, show us the proper technique, and take group photos for us. Registration was easy, but this place was hard to find. This is located in the same building as the 13th floor haunted house, which is also an escape room. There's no signage, you have to figure out you're at the right place by looking at the building number. Once you check in, you have to walk or drive about 2 blocks to Alamo studios where it's actually located, so don't park anywhere you have to pay to check in. Once there it was a lot of fun. This is a great new activity here is SA! It's a long time since I did something completely new. Somehow I've gone my whole life without ever throwing an axe and now I cannot figure out what took so long. Class Axe has a great staff that is very patient and a lot of fun. Throwing an axe is not as easy as it sounds. It definitely takes practice getting the axe to stick in the wall and especially difficult to be accurate. The staff encourages everyone to have as much fun as possible while being as safe as possible. They all have a great sense of humor and appreciate a good pun when you come up with your lumberjack name. This is a fun place to take your friends, family, date or coworkers to.
