This is a rare gem; locally owned and delicious! Everything was from scratch. We had meatloaf, chicken and chopped beef. All were so tender and flavorful. For sides we had mashed potatoes (homemade, yum), yams, Mac and cheese and hand cut fries. My picky eater was even in Heaven. Unfortunately we were too late to get some peach cobbler which was sold out but we will be back early next time. read more

The catfish here is so good amen. I also love the vibes. Would drive 30+ minutes to get here again. Also the tartar sauce was so good, these other reviews are wrong. read more

First timers and we left very satisfied! Brandy was awesome with the service and the food didn't disappoint! We had wings, fries, greens, Mac n cheese & catfish... all delicious. Absolutely will return for future meals. read more

Rib bones with no meat. Dried up over cooked catfish, cold yams that weren't edible, cold Mac & cheese inedible. Not great, I definitely won't be back. read more

This is a sorry claim for "soul food "! I ordered a catfish dinner and the best part was the canned soda! Potato salad was DISGUSTING and liquid like. The tartar sauce, which I made the mistake of paying an extra $0.50 for was yellow and overpowered with mustard. Let us not forget the stale bread. NEVER AGAIN!!!‍ The one star is only because I couldn't post without it. read more

Nasty,Nasty,Nasty I stopped in one day to have fried catfish and pork chops with some greens. The food was terrible. read more

I was in Denton for a work related conference and we were trying to find a place to eat a quick lunch. A coworker yelped this place and I KNEW I was going to be disappointed by the looks of the exterior. I never want to be a person to pre-judge anyone or anything. All I will say is that the place is DISGUSTING!!! I'm not sure how they are legally open for human consumption?!? The fish was very smelly and the fries were definitely cooked in old oil. Everything very dusty and dirty! I felt so bad so I still ordered. The green beans were placed in the microwave. Unfortunately I had to toss the food, and $13.00 wasted! Honestly the fish looked good, but I could not eat it based on what I could see and smell!!! The man working there was nice so I gave one more star for that alone. I will never forget that foul, old oil smell I wish that this business could clean up and do better. read more

Well I read all the reviews and looked through all the pictures before I ordered. First off I ordered through door dash and they didn't put all the items I ordered in the bag. I got the catfish plate with Mac and cheese and fries. The fries were good af. I may be biased as I like potatoes anyways. The Mac and cheese was NOT GOOD. Very bland and barely any cheese on mine. Wish it was cheesier and creamier. And lastly the fried fish... it was decent. Edible. It great honestly and for the price you pay you might as well go to cheddars or Texas road house and get their fried fish and get more pieces. Overall disappointed as I was hoping it would be better. May go back and get a link plate and see if it's any better. Also the drink options are super cheap and nasty. Just get water or something. I ordered pink lemonade and they gave me some nasty cheap Kroger fruit punch. Not a fan. Wish I could've tried the sweet potato pie but it was left out of my order ‍ read more

This was probably the best place I have eaten in a long time. Yes, it is a mom and pop restaurant but also it was a place that made me think of growing up as a kid. Im writing this review on the brinks of tears because I am pregnant and was craving soul food this by far was not soul food. I got two different plates one with ribs (they were the best out of all the rest) greens ehh ok and last was the baked beans it. But that indeed was the best plate out of the two. The second plate was wing plate (the wings were ok) Mac and cheese was completely disgusting it's like they made it from the Kraft box and tried to add something extra in it and the yams were in its own category not at all how I know of them to taste. Yes everyone has there own taste to things but there is no way that people are actually giving this spot 4 stars read more

I absolutely love everything about Clara's Kitchen. The staff are extremely friendly, honest, and very kind. They are knowledgeable about their menu items and patient in helping you choose the right food. Serving sizes are appropriate and prices are reasonable. The food is truly cooked to perfection and very flavorful. They definitely made me feel at home. I highly recommend Clara's Kitchen to anyone ! read more

I hate to leave subpar reviews, but alas here go. The red beans taste straight like ranch style beans FROM A CAN! I couldn't taste a difference between the 2 honestly. The cornbread didn't taste fresh. However, the catfish, yams, and cabbage were pretty good. I wouldn't order the boudin BALL not balls (multiple) as the menu says. They change over $3 for one. I may go again, but likely won't. read more

Their fried catfish & special sauce is to die for. Their fries are amazing too. Everything cooked & served with love, in a historic Southeast Denton location. read more

Food is very good. Very high in salt & the wait time on weekends can be up to 3 hours. People are friendly and the food is outstanding. Banana pudding has to be the best thing on the menu. read more

Clara’s Kitchen - Fried Chicken, Ribs, Mac & Cheese, Candy Yams, & Peach Cobbler. WOW! - Soul Food Near Me - Denton, Texas

Took 40 minutes to get one order of wings and I had to keep swatting flies away as I waited for my food. Jars of not sure what they were on the counter were nasty looking and hand sanitizer jar needed to be cleaned. Wouldn't want to touch it to get the hand cleaner out of it. read more

This place has THE BEST catfish I've ever had! The mild barbecue sauce still has a nice little kick to it and the sides are super flavorful! Just don't come here. I was excited to try it but it's a disappointment. I threw away more than half of my food and so did the people I came with. Links, dry. wings, a joke. Mac N Cheese, Kraft taste better and it's definitely not baked like the menu says. Fries, trashed them after one bite. Chop beef, decent. The Shasta soda is the crappy cherry on top. Save your money. On top of all of this, the guy working had such a bad attitude, you could tell he hated being there and didn't want us there either. read more

Food is always fresh and tasty! The oxtails are sooo good! The customer service is also always great!

The ribs were tough and the BBQ sauce was runny. The Mac and cheese was ok. The links were dry. They had warm drinks and out of bread for my sandwich. Not impressed. The fries were good. read more

I went here with an open mind and was severely disappointed. The food tasted old, and stale after one bite i had to throw it away. I am pretty sure what we were served had been sitting out for a couple days at least. Very unsanitary and nasty. read more

Our food took a bit longer to get out than my dad would have liked, but the food was great and nows the best time to support our community. Thank you for existing, I needed some soul food in my life! read more

Checked this out because of craving catfish but we knew it was a family operation in an old house, so we set modest expectations. Actually really enjoyed it because of it's basic homecooking soul food concept with no pretentious. Catfish was tasty, greens also satisfying but mash spuds I had doubts were from scratch. Banana pudding almost lived up to my childhood memories. Order at counter, don't expect ice beverages, and if you get music, count it as bonus ( thought their selections for blues were lovely). I got to enjoy a quiet booth to visit, so I felt like home...and that's the point. read more

I wanted to like this place so bad and really struggled to finally come leave a review, but the purpose of this app is to provide feedback, good or bad, so here goes. This is some of the worst food I've ever had. Got the 3 meat plate w/ smothered pork chop, meatloaf, and "catfish." Pork chop was inedible because it was waaaaayyyy too salty. I believe in seasoning, but this tasted like a whole bottle of Lawry's tipped over on it and no one bothered to wash it off. The meatloaf was ok. The "catfish" is what pushed me over the edge to write this review. My biggest pet peeve is restaurants saying they have catfish, but it's basa or swai. I am a catfish connoisseur and this, my friends, is NOT catfish. Sides were yams, greens and mac n cheese. Yams were ok. Had a marshmallow taste, if you like that. Mac n cheese was ok. Needed more flavor. Greens were not available. So, I grab my order (after waiting way longer than quoted) and get in the car and half the order is missing. I state what I'm missing, which includes the greens, and I'm told they don't have greens and I should have gotten cabbage as a sub. Never heard of being given a sub that I didn't ask for and may not have wanted, but ok. The cabbage is also the reason for the review. Worst cabbage I've ever had. Mushy and tasted like it was boiled in unseasoned water that had a ton of pepper settled in the bottom. Zero taste or seasoning. They needed to transfer some of the salt from the pork chop. Cornbread was not very good. Also got a rib sandwich. Very shabby cuts that tasted like they were warmed in the microwave and slathered in bbq sauce. I feel so bad because I can tell these are good folks trying to run a business, but I would never eat from here again. read more

This is a small business that has great food. I have gotten their fried catfish a few times and the proper corn meal coating is always crispy, never greasy, and the fish is never dry. Their fries are home made and well seasoned, their yams are sweet and tender, and I love their greens. Right now you will want to call your ahead because they may take a minute but their food is definitely worth the wait. I love to support local businesses and these people definitely deserve it, on top of the food being great the owners and staff are very friendly. read more

Some of the best fried fish I've ever had! Also, I don't usually like tartar sauce, but their version is pretty good. For $11, I got the fish, two sides and a drink. The sides are pretty good, but I was disappointed that I didn't get to try the cabbage or yams. read more

Absolutely loved my experience at this black owner business. The food was delicious and fast! Catfish was crunchy but not salty. The seasoning they put on the fries reminds me of wingstop BUT BETTER. Definitely will go again to get the Catfish Plate (3 pieces, 2 sides and sliced bread) for only $11! read more

The fish I had was amazing! Seasoned to perfection and so crisp, they also have this out of the world tarter sauce that I couldn't get over!! Everything was so good! Awesome down the earth spot. Tammy was super friendly and gave us some fries to eat that she was testing out a new recipe. Great spot, very hole in the wall, looks like a house but a must try. Will be coming back here next time I'm in town read more

One of the best lil hole in the wall family run restaurants in Denton. Homemade Southern style catfish, ribs, wings and bbq. Manny and Tammy treated us like family. The only time we stopped talking about how delicious everything was was when we were putting more of it into our mouths! The light breading on the flaky catfish was hands down the beat I've ever had! Open Wed-Sundays until Sept. 15th when they go 7 day/week. Seriously good food. read more

Fried catfish and fries were absolutely crazy good I love it I will most definitely be back and recommend friends

Ordered food for the first time wanted to try something different. Will never order from there again. Not sure how they thought that was ok to serve. read more

Got the Link sandwich and Mac & cheese... Mac & cheese had good seasoning. The sandwich was soggy and mediocre at best. After eating I felt sick along with a coworker who ate with me. The smell from the "restaurant" and the food was terrible. Never felt worse and I've had food poisoning from other places. The exterior for this places unfortunately shows the interior as well. Even if I needed soul food to live, this place would be the last on my stop. read more

The staff was super friendly. I went on a Thursday afternoon so there was no wait and my food was ready very quick. Their fried catfish was the best I've ever had not too greasy or heavy at all. Local treasure. We are addicted to the fried catfish which reminds me of the way catfish used to taste at places like Red Carpet in Frisco 30 years ago when you drove long ways for the best catfish. The chicken in waffles is so good it should be against the law or served at the State fair. Smothered pork chops great as well. I'm sitting here thinking about the green beans, collards, cabbage sides that taste like your grandmother used to cook if your grandmother could really really cook. Good takeout option as the seating is tight. The Sunday soul food menu is fantastic. It's busy on Sundays but we usually try and put a supper order in Round 4 pm for takeout. read more
