They're open till 4am on weekends! I'm glad I did. It was a far better option than Taco Bell. This hole in the wall had really good old fashion "soul food". Although it may be a converted house, this hole in the wall is about as hole in the wall as you can get. Definitely not going to score any points for décor or ambiance, but the folks are hospitable. The menu is extensive, but maybe too much for what I've always found to be a one person operation. Definitely mixed reviews on all the foods that we have tried, with the exception of very good catfish nuggets and frenchfries - - if you like limp and greasy french fries, which a couple of the people in our family do. After three attempts over the last couple of years, I am not very likely to return unless it is for the catfish nuggets and fries. We were visiting our son this weekend and 5 of us went to Clara's yesterday. I'm so glad we did-the food is home-style deliciousness! 1st I would like to say that I have ordered from Clara's several times and have even highly recommended them to friends and clients. The will no longer be a recommendation or restaurant used by anyone in my family. We ordered to catfish meals and an oxtail and rice through UberEats and picked it up at the front door as the delivery driver was walking away. After taking one bite my daughter found a fried dead beetle in her fish plate. I immediately went online and asked Uber eats to have my money refunded because we all were disgusted and none of us felt the need to eat our food after the experience. I was only refunded $27.06 of the $69.60 spent. Not ok in my book. The gesture is simply not good enough. Got my food fast. The meats are great. Got the fried pickles, my fav. Wife never liked fried pickles, this time she was begging me for more. The sides and pies need help. Cabbage is more like kimchi, expecting something a little more fatback and butter style. Wasn't bad, just not my expectation. The sweet corn.... Could not eat it. I didn't quite know what to expect when we got here tonight, but we decided to give it a try. Our order consisted of 2 rib plates, 2 fish plates, and 6 pieces of cornbread. We asked them to fry the fish hard to add a little more crunch. Maaaaaaan! This food was on POINT!! I was highly satisfied. The macaroni and cheese, baked beans, fries....ALL of the sides were good. The Mac and cheese was probably my least favorite which is not saying it was bad! The corn was delicious and I ate it all first because I couldn't stop eating it. My first visit was before they worked out their zoning issues, it was a Sunday at 1:10pm and they were slammed! They were polite, but super busy. It was warm and smoky from the nonstop cooking and very crowded. It took a while to even place our order since there was a line and their phone was ringing off the hook with call in orders. We were there 47 min before we left with our food. We showed up around the same time a few Sundays later and it was much calmer! Now that the zoning issues are resolved and they have normal hours (Wed - Fri 11am-8pm) it seems their orders are more spread out. They were very welcoming and friendly. We were the only ones in there at the time, but they took several phone orders and were also cleaning. We were there approximately 5 min after placing our order before they set a neat bag on the table in front of us and wished us a good day. After we placed our order, my eyes wandered to a weekday menu. I got really excited and they were very patient with my questions. I can't wait to try their take on chicken and waffles for my next visit. Apparently they deep fry chicken wings and add honey and powdered sugar afterwards. They had 2 tables and about 5 bar seats, so taking it to go is the safest bet. Calling ahead is clearly a popular choice. I'm most familiar with their Sunday menu which is plates (1 meat, 2 meat, etc) starting at $11.99. I looked through their weekday menu which seems to be sandwiches in the $5-7 range and baskets and 1 item plates in the $11-14. They make everything from scratch, including their desserts and corn muffins! They sell cans of soda (Big K, various flavors) for $0.99. I would sum the food up by saying it's very good home cooking. These are nostalgic and comforting meals that will remind you of a grandmother or aunt who was known to be the best cook in your family. So in rating it for what it is, and considering my take on small businesses, this model is always going to be 5 stars in my opinion. Perhaps someone will come along who can cook way better than me, who will deem the food or value 4 stars, but I keep finding myself thinking about my next visit, so I think that says something right there. On our first visit we ordered a 2 meat plate to share for $15.99. I also ordered some cornbread muffins, 3 for $1. We got two colas for $0.99, because it was so warm in there. I asked about the cake and was told it was praline and was cooling from the oven. I got a slice of that for $1.99. We ordered catfish and fried ribs with mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. On our second visit, we each got a 1 meat plate for $11.99 and since they didn't have cake that day (wah!) I got a slice of sweet potato pie for $2.29. This time my husband ordered the smoked ribs with spicy sauce, mashed potatoes and mac n cheese. I went with the smothered pork chops with cabbage and candied yams. I do want to mention that when you get a 2 meat plate, you get the same entrée sizes as each 1 meat plate. Also, they seem to give the same huge portion of sides, you'll have leftover sides with a 1 meat plate. I suggest going with the 2 meat plate and sharing for the best value. The catfish was crispy fried with a savory cornmeal crust and was light and tender on the inside. The seasoning had a strong flavor that I think would have been well balanced with some tartar sauce. I am under the impression that I should have automatically received some and they only charge when you ask for extra sauce. I was sad that there was none in there because I think they make their own. The fried ribs had an interesting flavor but after a few bites my husband said they were overcooked. He seemed to really like the smoked ribs from our second visit, though he said he didn't have enough sauce. I'm not big on sauces, but if you are, you should get extras. The smothered pork chop was cooked perfectly and was very tasty. The bone was huge, so it didn't feel like a big portion compared to the other things we tried, but I would still order it again. I really like their small, slightly sweet cornbread muffins. Reminds me of my childhood and they're really good. So far, I've liked all my sides, they've been well above average. One item to note is the mashed potatoes are not served with gravy. That's cool with me, but I know some people wouldn't like that. My husband said they were over seasoned the second time, but they were really good the first time. Their sweet potato pie is very good, but that praline cake is hands down the best thing I've tried. It was so delicious I was licking the icing off the saran wrap and I don't care who knows it. It was phenomenal!! I may make this a regular dessert stop! I'm all about supporting local. They are new and working things out, but I recommend stopping in and giving them a try for a good meal. Don't forget the cake! read more
