This is a solid tapas bar near Placa de Catalunya. It shares the same owner as Cervesaria Catalana and Vinitus. My favorites are the eggplant chips, and the shrimp and asparagus tempura. The eggplant chips were crispy and had a nice sweet drizzle on top. I have never dipped shrimp tempura in romesco sauce before, but it was nice, kind of felt like it was a Japanese-Spanish fusion tapa. The torrija (Spanish French toast) was good too. Service was pretty fast. Given the number of tourists in the area, I am sure they would want to turn over the tables as soon as possible. Thought we would have to wait a bit to get seated, but there's a lot of seating both indoor and outdoor. Even with so many customers, their service was rather fast and efficient. Once we got seated, they wasted no time and asked us if we were ready to order. We ordered a few traditional Spanish tapas, which we were all very delightful CALAMARI ANDALUSIAN: Loved this! The batter was very thin and the calamari were all very thick and bouncy! These were so easy to eat and the citrus from the lemon cut the oiliness from the calamari. CROQUETTES: Crispy on the outside, soft and buttery inside. I loved the croquettes and could probably inhale a ton of these. PAPAS FRITAS: I'm not a huge papas fritas fan, but my boyfriend is and he loved the sauce and seasoning on the potatoes. The potatoes were crispy on the outside, but soft and pillowy inside as well. TENDERLOIN AND FOIE GRAS MONTADITO: I didn't love this as much especially for what it's worth. The tenderloin was hard to chew through and the foie gras just seemed a little extra on top of it. Nothing about the flavors really stood out. But the one item that deserves a category of it is own is the TORRIGA QUEMADA DE STA TERESA. Oh my goodness! This bread pudding was amazing! Absolutely amazing!!! We found this place on a whim, down the street from another bar. We sat under the tents near a firepit. We ordered several tapas and they all tasted AMAZING. The service was fantastic. They were on point and always took away our empty dishes quickly. We ordered 7 tapas and ALL of them were amazing. The sangria was good as well. We had our first meal and our last meal in Barcelona here. Both times we were seated almost immediately, but we did see lines when we left. Timing is everything. Service was fast and the two waiters that we had were both friendly and brought our food quickly. We liked the asparagus and mushrooms so much that we got it both times. The patatas bravas and the churros with chocolate were also repeats. The flan was very good and the squid tentacles were delicious but sold out by our second visit. First, I want to say that the food was amazing. This is the second time we visited Ciutat Comtal. We are from California. We visited last June by happen-chance. We loved the lively atmosphere and the fact that most patrons were enjoying in boisterous conversations. That first night in June 2025, it was mostly a 20/30's crowd bc it was after 11 pm. This visit to Spain we stayed at a hotel feet from the restaurant. I was so excited when I saw the familiar awnings. I had planned to Come by anyway but this was a great surprise. We invited two friends also visiting Spain to join us. I told my husband that I wanted to visit everyday before we leave. I was joking half heartedly. Other guests chatted us up while we waited to be seated and for our friends. We were thoroughly enjoying ourselves, Friends came and we began catching up on all things. AT SOME POINT, I noticed a table two away with two women one slightly older with a large beak and across the room staring at us/me. Glaring and dirty looks. We were dressed in our best and actually made an attractive group. 45 minutes into our meal our waitress (middle aged Asian lady) came over and said to me "I'm sorry but that lady said you are talking too loud." I was shocked. Mind you we had other tables near us. The waitress apparently ASSUMED the lady with the beak nose was right the way she said it. I said we were going to continue to enjoy ourselves and thank you. I was very embarrassed as she zoomed in on me. As a lawyer, I know what is right and wrong for behavior and I was absolutely acting appropriately. I can only believe that the lady with the beak/nose did not like or appreciate my presence or joy at seeing me with my husband and friends. I believe as the only BLACK woman at the table she targeted me. Though we ordered probably 10 -12 tapas and 3 bottles of wine, my embarrassment stayed. They (the beak lady) left. We stayed an hour more paid, tipped and left. I really wish that if I was so much of a problem that a MANAGER would have came over to speak to both TABLES. I was made to be at fault and because I did not want to make a big deal with our friends I didn't argue the point. The waitress has a superior to report to and she should have handed the situation off. I did not feel supported at all. We won't be returning as a result of this experience despite my intention to be a regular in my short time here. Please do better for your guests especially those who present differently. I am so disappointed and upset at this experience. Use my experience as a cautionary tale for those like me. read more

Ciutat Comtal was a recommendation from a friend and I had it bookmarked for our last lunch in the city. We arrived around 12:30pm on a Saturday and there was no wait. It's actually a really big space, so they sat us upstairs in a quiet corner. We had grilled razor clams, octopus Galician style, duck with apple and oporto sauce montaditos, grilled scallop and prawn montaditos, and the tenderloin and foie gras montaditos. The razor clams and the octopus were the highlights, along with the grilled scallop and prawn montaditos. I actually ended up ordering another of the scallop and prawn montaditos. The food was really, really good and I am recommending it to all my friends moving forward. If you're looking to have lunch here later than 1pm on a Saturday, be prepared to wait. When in Barcelona, as I was a couple of months ago, I like to go to Ciutat Comtal for breakfast. I typically have a flauta de jamon and an espresso. I enjoy the atmosphere of the front room. The place is vast and seating elsewhere is, for me, less interesting. I haven't had other meals at Comtal so I can't comment on their dishes. I recall, back in 2012, that the front room had a different appearance. Sandwiches were on display as were tapas, on the long counter. Searching through photos of the interior on Yelp, I see pre-pandemic (2017/2018) pics show how this looked and I enjoyed that atmosphere more than the current one. That's the only reason I've taken away one star (I'd prefer to remove only half a star but can't). The vibe has been reduced by taking that off the counter. One thing I'd like to say, which is a message to all places I've been in Barcelona and Comtal...you folks need to make improvements to your espresso/coffee. Nowhere in Barcelona that I went to had decent espresso. Why?! I make better at home...oh well, I need my morning caffeination! See you folks at Comtal for breakfast next time I'm in town. read more

Dropped in for a late meal at around 10:30pm after walking around El National. We first tried the Cod in honey. I didn't expect it to look like that but it was good. It had a nice sweet tomato sauce. Crab with prawn: it is prawn, pickle and imitation crab over bread. It reminded me of a California roll temaki due to the amount of imitation crab. Foie gras and tenderloin over bread: the Foie gras is so rich and melts in your mouth. The tenderloin I wish was a little bit overcooked. I seldom do that because there's just way too much to try. Maybe Buttery Company (Quezon City) and In N Out (Cali) - I've gone back twice during a short trip/vacation. For starters once again, the receptionist and all the wait staff and bartenders all speak fluent English. My high school Spanish only takes me so far but you don't have to be concerned here. As for the food, I checked out the previous reviews and pics and I zeroed in on 1) the Foie gras on sirloin (so rich and juicy) on a slice of baguette and 2) the Saint Teresa's divine dessert (sponge cake/creme brûlée combination). And Everything else was icing on the cake!! The sangria was perfect after logging 20,000 steps, the fresh seafood, calamari, spicy shrimp, figs topped with Iberian ham. Our server spoke perfect English but wasn't attentive. There was no "today's tapas" sheet included with the English menu. - Copa blanco casa (2,85€) - house white was drinkable. Likely a Sauvignon blanc. - Vermut de reus (3,35€) - decent. - 13 pimientos de padron (3,20€) - 13 fried hot green peppers. Not charred much. They sprinkled salt flakes on top, but quite plain. - Xampinyons i espàrrecs planxa (6,15€) - grilled asparagus and mushroom. Asparagus was very plain. Mushrooms slightly better. Reminded me of when I cook vegetables at home. - Anchoas del cantabrico (6,95€) - anchovies were incredibly salty. Must have been canned. - Bacalao allioli miel (13,45€) - codfish with honey aioli. Best dish of the night. Cod was tender, melt in your mouth. Live and learn. Honey over cod tapa was the bomb! I would not get the steak with fat on bread. Not worth it. Red wine sangria was better to us than the sparking sangria. Beef tenderloin came out first, I loved how the beef was cooked. For some it could be considered rare or even raw. They did not ask us how we would like it to be cooked. But that's how I like the meat cooked but my mom did not so she did not even try. However, it was incredible. Codfish with honey was really good but to me it was a little to sweet because of the honey. I think this is one of the most popular dishes at this restaurant and I could see why. Overall, beef tenderloin was amazing, codfish with honey was good, too but a little too much honey to me. Our waiter just picked out the most popular tapas for us and we did not disappoint! Came at around 6 pm on a weekday in December and no wait! I heard from a friend in Barcelona that you don't need a reservation as long as you come before 8/9 ish. But there were lots of people inside. It's a very big restaurant that is super nicely decorated. Great ambiance. Our waiter was funny, nice, and had great recommendations. We got the cod with honey, pan con tomate, patatas bravas, fried calamari, and Spanish omelette. All were amazing but my favorite was probably the omelette. One of our questions to the lovely lady who checked us in at our hotel (Kimpton Vividora) was where the locals go for solid tapas. Here is the top place she suggested, and we understood why. Great service, a multitude of options, menus in Spanish and English, excellent service (for the most part), and superb food at really great prices. We enjoyed the octopus (pretty solid), bravas potatoes (incredible), beef tenderloin slider style montadito (okay), loaded fries (incredible), and chicken croquettes (pretty solid). Nothing was bad, but naturally, some were better than the others. However, their desserts are phenomenal, especially that St. Teresa cream concoction; we went back on our last day in Barcelona and waited in line for a spot at the bar just for it. On that note, go for a spot at the bar. It generally means less of a wait time, and we found the service at the bar to be twenty times better than the one time we were seated at a table, which in all honesty was terrible and rude. We weren't really sure what quite to order, and expressed this to the waiter... who surprisingly took our menu for us and helped us order. Thankfully we trusted him with our meal and he served us the most popular dishes in the restaurant: codfish with cheese & honey, razor clams, fried potatos with eggs on top and we opted for an additional dish wish he ordered us a small seafood platter containing mussels, and other shellfish. Sangria was strong and food came out quickly. The codfish was our favorite dish as it was both savory, sweet and very unexpected.
