Seriously though...choosing a tapas restaurant in Barcelona has not been easy! There are so many choices of amazing eateries, both "on and off the beaten path". How can a "foodie" decide in a pressurized environment like this, LOL??? In this case, we ended up at Ciudad Condal by accident, quite literally, as were on our way to a different restaurant for our first meal in Barcelona. As we were figuring out directions, I happened to look up and see this restaurant...and promptly checked for Yelp reviews (of course, ha!)...and was intrigued enough that we decided to stay. And, I have to say it was a good decision! There are some reviews that mentioned this restaurant as a "tourist trap", with long wait times. However, our experience was a terrific one. We were promptly seated, had a great waiter and ate delicious tapas throughout the evening. One thing to note, Ciudad Condal has ample seating in multiple seating areas, with multiple personalities. Depending on the experience you want...sit at the fish bar, high-tops in the front, upstairs seating, outside (great people watching spot) or back dining room. Either way, the food is bound to be good no matter where you sit! For our meal, we opted for the following tapas: Patatas Bravas, Shrimp "Al Ajillo", Beef Tenderloin, Mushrooms and Asparagus, Grilled Prawn Skewer and the "highly recommended" Crispy Camembert. We enjoyed each dish, but the standouts were the tenderloin and prawn skewer. All of this was washed down with the tastiest Sangria I've had in Barcelona thus far! This is one of those places that makes you wanna knock off a star from every other review you've written lately to ensure ppl know how good it is... Legit, unbelievably good, esp if you're into seafood. To top it off, it's reasonably priced! Fast, attentive service, English so everything was easy (minus the menu but I was able to just ask for the things I wanted w no problems), dark wood decor and a great ambience. More shockingly, they're somewhat central to lots of touristy action so reasonably easy access to it! ...on a busy street, def one of those places that you'd be suspicious is a total tourist trap, esp w what seems like an over abundance of great reviews. Thirty minute wait At 6PM on Sunday But, oh so worth it I probably should have written this review closer to the visit when my memories were fresher, but it was absolutely one of the favorite meals of my life. Our waiter's English was not the greatest, but good enough to get by. We mostly just took his recommendations, and he did not lead us astray. Everything was delicious: calamari, patatas bravas, steak sliders, french fries topped with runny egg, to name a few. Everyone in our group was in consensus: this is a five star place. Our family of four had an amazing time here! From the fantastic service to the super delicious food, this was our favorite dining experience in Barcelona. It was a 25 minute wait to get in, but that's not bad considering they told us it was a 40 minute wait. Tons of people trying to get into this place, which has two floors of seating and an outdoor section in the middle of the street. And all of them looking very happy with their selection. The server was very humorous and since tapas of the day was all in Spanish, or Catalonian, they let us order at the bar by pointing to what looked good and giving suggestions. Prepare for a long wait even super late at night. Who eats dinner near midnight? This restaurant was packed! We managed to snag a table near the bar and gladly swapped with a family of four that needed more space. Besides, who doesn't like bar seats? We got front row seats next to the friendly server. We basically pointed to everything our neighbors were eating. My eyes first laid on the lobster rice and I was drooling before I even took a bite. Can you imaging how big of a puddle I made after taking a bite!? Pure happiness. I then had the Shrimp kebab and the crab with shrimp that had too much mayo. I was too eager to eat that I dropped one of my dishes on my lap, tried saving it and dropped it on the floor. My neighbors saw complete disappointment as if I just lost my cell phone. Thank to Yelp, we discovered this place on our first night in Barcelona. We enjoyed a delicious dinner, a lovely restaurant and had an unexpected treat meeting two female fellow travelers, both from Turkey. The ladies took the same approach we did to the meal. Try a little of everything! Lots of delicious sangria, (get the full pitcher, the 1/2 will cost you nearly the same and you will want more), hard cheese and breads. Mushroom tapas that were to die for and many other choices, especially for meat eaters. While there was less selection for vegetarians, trust me I did not go hungry. This place is popular! I've walked by this place several times on my way to and from my hostel and it was always busy. Food: 1) Calamari - it was pretty good. They were lightly battered which is how I prefer calamari. 2) tenderloin sandwich - the steak was cooked medium but the taste was too mild. It felt that there wasn't enough seasoning. 3) 4 cheese melted over bread - if you like melted cheese, you'll like this dish. Very simple and delish. 4) chicken & ham croquette - Service: My server was so incompetent. She charged me for 2 extra items and continued to argue with me that I ordered it. On top of that I ordered an item and she didn't bring it out. English as a second language is no excuse for getting my order wrong when I clearly pointed to each item on the menu. We went in the afternoon, not too busy yet and we waited a long time for the waiter to take our order. Some of the food was very grease, the best plate was the crab salad. I found this place on Yelp and decided to check it out for dinner - the wait was about an hour and there is a wait every day no matter what hour it's opened. I can definitely see why! We ended up coming here two days in a row and we loved it equally as much both times! The first night we had a bottle of wine and the assorted tapas and was amazed at the freshness and flavors of the tapas and the wine was delicious! My favorite was the prawns! Cooked perfectly and the sauce was yummy and amazing! And they were so so fresh! The ham croquettes were also a favorite! This place was cheap and affordable and taste and service were just as amazing! We came the second day for lunch because we thought they served a different menu and would have paella - wrong! Same menu! But we liked it so much it was ok! We knew what tapas we wanted and what new ones we wanted to try! And this time we got the white and red sangria pitchers! Delicious sangria! MUST GO!! I loved this place. The reviews on here so not steer you wrong. NOTE: paella is only available at lunch from 2pm-3pm each day as long as it's not sold out. Not at dinner (we learned the hard way). We didn't make a reservation and came at 8:30 for a party of 3. They sat us in 30 minutes. Perfect! Be prepared to wait if you don't make a reservation because this place is constantly busy. They also have a terrace that might be quicker. We ordered the red Sangria and it was some of the best I had in Spain. Perfect mix of sweet and strong. We ordered a bunch of different tapas and just kept doing that and drinking. Tapas galore! First, you must keep in mind that there will be a wait. We waited around 20minutes for a table. Once seated, we were provided with an extensive tapas menu. It would have been nice if they described what was each item. It made it difficult for us to choose. We eventually ended up getting the sampler platter and cabreaos eggs style. The cabreaos eggs style is a must. Crispy, thin potatoes with fried eggs on top and some kind of sauce. Yummy! I'm very confused by the name of this place because the outside entrance and the menu says Ciutat Comtal..unsure. Anyways, this place ended up being my all time favourite spot to get tapas. I am willing to come here over and over again. Everything tasted beyond amazing! We got the grilled mushroom, prawn skewers, razor clams, cabreaos eggs style, beef tenderloin with foie, tomato bread, and cream catalana. Out of all, our favourites were the eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes bread, prawns....who am I kidding, literally everything was tasty and fresh. On our way to the restaurant district, our taxi driver worked in the restaurant business for 37 years and walked us through the intricacies of eating in Barcelona! And this place was at the top of his list! It's not too touristy, the prices are reasonable, and the taste is second to none! They have an need tenderloin with fois which might have been one of the best items on the menu, and I kid you not, I had 5 of them and they're €5 a piece lol. I'll let the pictures do the talking! You can put your name on a waiting list for a table or you can jockey for a counter table or seat at the bar most people do both like me. It seems the hosts are Filipino so you can order in English. A tourist trap. The waiters were fast and efficient, but the food was bad. Their fois gras was sold out, so we tried ten other dishes. The only dish that was passable was the Roman style squids. Everything else was worse than something it would have taken me five minutes to cook at home. We ordered the cod dish that everyone raves about. The cod was chewy and the sauce was over-the-top sweet. It was like someone poured a huge bag of sugar into the sauce. I don't understand how people can describe this dish as "heavenly". They must really enjoy ground up candy mixed into their food, or maybe the chefs just messed up a batch. The seafood was either overcooked (burnt) or undercooked, or both overcooked and undercooked in different places. It is possible that some dishes here are good, but if you order ten dishes from a place and nine are bad, that's a pretty bad sign. For an enjoyable dinning experience, look elsewhere. read more

Wow. Ate here three nights during my 2 week visit to BCN because it was that good. Eating here won't leave you disappointed, and there are some real standouts to try. First night we were unsure of the place, wondering if it indeed was a tourist trap, and second visit we ordered a ton of food and just went for it all, and third visit was to try all the stuff we didn't get to the night before, the menu varies somewhat daily but the most popular ones are available daily- my favorites, the real standouts, were the steak and foie gras - be sure to not skip the foie gras because it is that amazing and was so perfectly done when I got it (First time I skipped it and after looking at the reviews, decided to try it the next night and wasn't the least bit disappointed! Second visit I ate the foie gras on its own and gave the steak to my partner... I ate the foie gras and steak together in one bite and it was such a wonderful complement to the steak!) AND also the honey cod with the crusty baked top! The shrimp skewer was tasty too with sweet, plump and juicy shrimp, though not terribly unique. The razor clams were just ok, as were the steamed mussels and clams with marinara - I find that the Spaniards don't usually use much garlic, or if any at all, in their steamed mussels. And garlic in seafood is just a must for me. The mini hamburgers were a tasty surprise, as was the steak baguette with its very good bread. The fried seafood we ordered were all perfectly and lightly battered with just the right amount of salt and seasoning. I wish I had got to try the lobster rice (though I have a feeling that better paella would be had elsewhere, as I already had paella twice at the beach once at Xiringuito Escribà and once at Xiroi...and side note, might I add - despite Xiringuito's renown, I found in the end I like Xiroi's better). The grilled octopus was just ok, I had better and fresher seafood at the beach. Churros were decent and the potatoes bravas were one of my favorites when compared to other restaurants, though I did not care for their red sauce, so we asked for the sauces on the side. The fried potatoes themselves are soft and pillowy and perfectly seasoned. There are so many good things to try here at Ciutat Comtal, prices are more than reasonable and despite the random few misses here and there (ahem, looking at you, crab and shrimp toast), the hits make up for it - but isn't that just the adventure of eating your way through Spanish tapas? One of my top 3 favorite tapas restaurants in Barcelona. I've been here a few times now and the first time we were lucky enough to get seats outside. Usually there's a long wait, but this restaurant is worth it. I'll get either the razor clams, pan de tomato, fried cuttlefish and baby squids andaluz style, potatoes bravas, tapita de pulpo, or the langastinos. Basically anything seafood. Everything is really good here! Make sure to top everything off with their drinks like tinto de verano or a cava! Or if you're like my boyfriend he just gets una cana. Annnnd the tapas saga continues! This time, with Cuidad Condal. This was our first stop in Barcelona. Thank god for it being open until 1:30am. We rolled in at 12am after being delayed for 7 hours, so you know we had to get our tapas fix. Not sure if it's because we arrived late, but we weren't given a specials menu. With that being said, I preferred their sister restaurant Cervecería Catalana, where I got to try some bomb, fresh, daily seafood specials. Their menus are very similar, though. Perhaps if we went at an earlier time we could have had it. The regular menu tapas here are still good, however. The grilled cuttlefish was probably my favorite, the Spanish omelette flautas are HUGE (makes for a great breakfast the next day), and you gotta try potatoes bravas. A tad underwhelmed with the crema Catalana and almond cake desserts, but it was still good enough to finish. Solid place for tapas and def a must try in Barcelona! read more
