We tried a plate of Iberian Montaditos, or sliced bread with toppings, including Iberian ham, loin, chorizo, and Idiazabal cheese. From the salad selections, we had the Seafood Cocktail Salad (chilled shrimp, octopus, calamari, imitation crab) and "Greek salad" made of cheese, tomatoes, and olives. The Cabreaos-style Eggs (or "angry eggs") was a unique dish made of fried potato sticks topped with two sunny-side up eggs and paprika oil, and everything was mixed up into a delicious creamy, crispy mixture right at the table. Seafood abounded on the menu as well, and we had Al Ajillo Shrimps (shrimp in red garlic oil) and Grilled Galician Cockles (similar to clams). But some of my favorite seafood dishes included the Grilled Razor Clams; Grilled Red Prawns, Clams, and Mussels; and the best-selling Codfish with Honey "Allioli," a tender, meaty fillet of cod topped with a creamy, slightly sweet honey sauce, baked to form a crusty outer layer. I now have a new favorite destination whenever I am visiting Barcelona. Ciutat Comtal is located in the heavily trafficked area by tourists, not too far away from the Plaça de Catalunya, which is the main artery where many of Barcelona's visitors first head to. I chose Ciutat Comtal because of two factors: one we were looking for authentic Spanish tapas served in a lovely setting, and two when I was able to use my Yelp app and search for what was ranked in the top ten in terms of restaurants according to my fellow Yelpers, Ciutat Comtal came out on top. Since the restaurant was so close in terms of walking distance from Las Ramblas, our entire party was sold on making the short walk out there. Thankfully, we arrived early enough to get a table for three on their first floor without any wait. It helped that we got here at about 7 p.m., which in Spanish time, was actually early for dinner time. Although they have an extensive dinner menu, all my party had to do was look at the "Tapas Del Dia" menu or the "Tapas of the Day" section of the menu to know what we wanted. Our first go round, we ordered their Beef Tenderloin with Foie, the Cod Fritters with Romesco Sauce, Grilled Jumbo Shrimp, Fried Calamari to wash down my meal I wanted something different than the atypical Sangria and our server suggested the Tinto de Verano, which was a play on the Sangria with a more fizzy twist. As we watched diners at other tables receiving their meals, my mother noticed a unique salad that passed us by and had to order it, it turned out to be the Seafood Cocktail Salad, which unfortunately was a real miss because it was literally combination of too many things, including an odd mozzarella cheese and tomato salad in addition to an immigration crab meat salad, a chicken salad, and tuna salad. Thankfully, there were four slices of their pan de coca con tomate to keep us satiated, which was their toasted flatbread with tomato, and a signature dish in Spanish cuisine. Our time at Ciutat Comtal was so enjoyable, as we never felt rushed despite the fact that the crowds started growing as the evening wore on. We were so enamored of our time at Ciutat Comtal that a second visit was in the horizon a mere two nights later, as we again were shopping around the Plaça de Catalunya area and the only thing that really piqued our interest was more of these well-prepared tapas dishes. So we made it back on our fourth night in Barcelona, and we got so lucky as during this night the place was packed but the hostess at the front remembered us from the evening before and sat us at a small table on their second floor almost immediately. This time, we ordered two servings of their Beef Tenderloins with Foie, Fried Cuttlefish "Andalusian Style", Grilled Shrimp, and their Grilled Asparagus and Mushrooms platter. We loved everything about our experience at Ciutat Comtal, from the food to the libations to the ambiance to the service. Clearly it's obvious as who else would eat the same place in such a city as vast and cultured as Barcelona in a mere three days? What we loved was that the menu was so varied, with their wide variety of tapas, in addition to menu items as unique as salads to baguette sandwiches. You better believe that Ciutat Comtal is a place that my family is going to make regular appearances at whenever we are in Barcelona, which may not be many times, but a place where at least one visit while we are in Barcelona is a must. Our first meal in Barcelona got us started on the right track! How can it be this good?! The value is great, flavors are great, and even though it's really busy, the service was great. Our server was a gentleman probably in his 40s or 50s, super appreciative that we were trying to use our Spanish learnings from way back in high school. He guided us through the menu and insisted on a few of his favorites, which were amazing. Clean, fast, fresh, and goooood. Worth a visit for sure. My faves were the huevos estrellad (as so requested by the server), pan con tomate, solomillo ternera, calamarcitos malagueña, and churros con chocolate. There were already plenty of people when we arrived, but we were prepared to wait... even with empty stomachs. Tapas are snacks in Spanish cuisine served in small plates or portions. It was a delight to have tried pintxos for the first time the other day, but we've had tapas before so we pretty much knew what was in store. The Andalusian-Style White Anchovies were divine. Simply prepped with olive oil, they were so tasty. We wanted the Malagueña-Style Baby Squids, but they were only available as part of the Assorted Fried Seafood because their inventory was limited. Of course, the bodies and tentacles of the squids got top billing, but the anchovies and the rest of the supporting casts would not be outdone. Everything on that plate was seasoned and fried to perfection. We had an extra dose of the fried anchovies as they were part of the Assorted Tapas, too. The grilled prawns were our favorite as the heads were very flavorful. It wasn't all seafood that day as we also tried the Beef Tenderloin Montaditos. The two pieces of grilled-to-order medallions were delicious. We started the day on a high note thanks to a pleasant brunch at Ciutat Comtal. It can get pretty crowded though, because people tend to wait in that same area. The restaurant has 2 levels, plus an outdoor seating area in the plaza. The waiters here work so hard to get the food out quickly. We ordered a bunch of tapas. We were disappointed that the pulpo and scallops mondadito were sold out, but the razor clams and cockles made up for it. The seafood is super fresh and all you need is a squeeze of lemon over the top. The stars of the show were the tortilla espanol, foie and tenderloin and the desserts. We tried the Cabreos eggs and could've gone without it. We ended up ordering 4 desserts and they were all yummy. Plus, 4 desserts came out to about 12 euros!? That's the price of 1 dessert in some places in NYC. Everything on the menu is reasonably priced.
