Dustin was our main point of contact and was extremely responsive and helpful. We had very specific stone we wanted used and a design pattern in mind and provided First Impressions with an exact example of what we wanted to replicate from a specific house just a block away from our home. Dustin's estimate for the work was in the middle range of 3 estimates we received and was exactly what we ended up paying for the job. There were several communication glitches along the way between our original discussion and agreement with Dustin and the apparent understanding of the crew that showed up to do the work. The initial delivery of materials contained a different stone than the one we wanted. The issue was quickly remedied by the crew foreman who returned relatively quickly the same day with a truckload of the correct stone. Then, once the crew began to lay the walkway, they put down a pattern different from the one we had specifically designated to Dustin. Luckily, we were watching their work at regular intervals and caught the mistake before any stones had begun to set. Communicating with the crew was difficult since their English was very limited. After a period of time, we did manage to contact a foreman who came to the job and we explained to him what we wanted and had requested in our original agreement. He seemed to know nothing of our original plan, but once he understood what we wanted, he communicated that to the crew and they dutifully started over to cut and lay stone to meet our request. So there were definite glitches in communication between Dustin and the crew. The glitches concerned issues that were central to the job and therefore were quite disconcerting. If we hadn't been home due to the pandemic and able to keep a close eye on things, the resulting problems could have been quite serious. That said, once the issues were brought to the attention of Dustin, the foreman, and the crew, they remedied the problems immediately and without question or hesitation. Most importantly, the work they did was superb. We have a lovely walkway, front porch, and new steps that we're extremely happy with. We've gotten numerous compliments about it and inquiries on what company did the work. We gladly refer them to First Impressions. A really first-class job of hardscaping. The crew was incredibly hard working, diligent and completed the job on time. Very good clean up as well. One other issue that arose and that I didn't notice as the job was being done. I had just assumed that in ripping up my old concrete walkway and installing the new one, the crew would ensure the new walkway would be level with my front lawn -- as the old one was. Instead, the new walkway is a few inches raised above the lawn, therefore necessitating a relatively extensive landscaping job that I still need to contract for. I can't now recall if Dustin ever raised this issue with me at the time of the estimate as a potential problem to consider. If he did, he definitely didn't emphasize it as something that I might need to remedy separately for another thousand dollars or more for the cost of raising and regrading my entire front lawn. By the time I did notice it, the walkway was done and it was too late. I didn't subsequently register this particular concern with First Impressions, but I'm doing so here. On issues of responsiveness, quality of work, value proposition, quickly correcting errors, customer service, etc., First Impressions did a 5-star job for us. The only reason I'm downgrading to 4 stars is my concern about the breakdowns in communication we experienced on a couple of critical issues between the front office and crew that I've described above. But they were quickly remedied, without delay or argument. As for the issue of the walkway being a few inches higher than expected, perhaps I should have been a bit more aware about seeking information on it while the estimate was being done. But perhaps First Impressions can also ensure that it's an issue they systematically point out and highlight to their prospective clients at the time jobs similar to mine are being discussed. It could be a way to avoid unnecessary disappointments with a job that in just about every other respect was wonderfully done.

The main project was to replace more than two dozen rotting boards and the steps on our 20-year-old deck, ensure the structural integrity of the deck, and jack up a corner of the deck that had sunk a couple of inches. He also power-washed the deck and the siding of the house that faced the deck. We also needed work done indoors. He repaired a door frame to a bedroom, fixed a broken storm door, replaced marble tile in our foyer, installed a missing sliding closet door, and procured and installed beautiful luxury plank vinyl flooring for a bedroom. He communicated clearly with us throughout every project, made suggestions when he saw something that needed improvement, and always checked with us when a decision needed to be made. In every situation, he did high-quality work in a very timely fashion. He always arrived when he said he would, made sure that the times were convenient for us, and always left the work area clean and organized. Luis is friendly, honest, communicative, reliable, trustworthy, polite, and highly skilled. We highly recommend Luis and his crew, and we would hire him again without hesitation.

The project manager, Jason, was on site every 2-3 days to ensure the work was proceeding as discussed. He was easily reachable by phone during the entire project. VKB was able to place 2 teams on site which allowed the work to be completed in 4.5 weeks instead of 6-7 weeks which would have been normal. The team lead on site, Walter, was easy to talk to and was very knowledgeable on all aspects of the project (demolition, prep, electrical, plumbing, fixtures, paint, etc.). He has an excellent team of workers that rotated across the various tasks in each bathroom. My wife and I were very pleased at the finished results. Everything came together very nicely. We would highly recommend VKB for your bathroom remodeling. With that said, I offer a few suggestions for potential clients to consider. Customers should make sure they know exactly what they want to do. While change orders can be made after the project is started, it costs more than if the project scope was defined from the beginning. Also, I recommend looking at www.build.com to pre-select the fixtures that are needed prior to scheduling the meeting with the designer. Trying to select all the fixtures for the bathroom within 60-90 minutes in the showroom can be challenging.

Following a devastating house fire that displaced our family, our homeowners insurance company informed us that its investigation determined that issues related to the fireplace installation were the cause of the fire. Had the proper permitting process been followed, the work may have been subject to county inspection before completion, potentially providing an opportunity for installation issues to be identified. The fire caused extensive damage to our home, which is expected to take approximately 12 months to rebuild. Beyond the financial impact, being displaced from our home and dealing with the aftermath has taken an enormous physical and emotional toll on our family. Based on our experience and the information provided to us following the fire, I cannot recommend this company. If you are considering a home renovation, I strongly encourage you to research everyone involved in the project, verify that all required permits are obtained, and confirm that required inspections are completed. A renovation should improve your home, not put your family's safety at risk or turn your life upside down for years.

They closed all the holes in the walls (no more air coming in) where the old convectors were located; they repaired the flooring so that it looked seamless; and they installed baseboards to mask the gaps left by the new convectors, which were a slightly different size than the previous ones. (The convectors were installed by a different company, so they coordinated with them nicely). They also installed a brand-new lighting fixture on the bedroom ceiling (lots of concrete drilling involved), hung a metal shelf in the bathroom, and closed all the holes in the kitchen left by the previous contractor when the kitchen was remodeled. No more mice! Wonderful service, punctual, and would happily call again for anything else I may need.

We were immediately ushered into a conference room where gentlemen from the building arm and the architectural arm sat down with us to find out what we needed. After a thorough discussion, they told us Don Moran was the "small jobs" (our jobs didn't seem small to us, but in the larger scheme of things, we understood why it did to them) supervisor and would be in touch. We were impressed with their time but didn't really believe we'd hear anything. Within a couple of hours, Don called, and our lives changed irrevocably and for the better. He arrived when he said he would, listened carefully and looked at our major renovations through the eyes of an expert and found things we hadn't noticed. He measured, estimated and within a week, we had accepted the estimates and had a contract and a schedule that met OUR needs and OUR timeframe. Once the work began, it was done with what we've come to know as Rule 4's typical behavior - on-time, on budget and on schedule with excellent results. Phase I took 6 days and Phase II took 4 days. We got 2 weeks in between to unpack the downstairs and pack up the upstairs - our request. In ten working days, we had our roof and siding repaired, deck and deck furniture stained, the outside power-washed, every wall painted, every ceiling re-blown, every floor recovered, new kitchen countertops installed including a new sink and disposal, new plumbing for all three toilets, two tub/showers re-grouted and re-sealed, all windows cleaned of dirt and mold, windows re-caulked and painted on the outside and inside, all outdoor trim and the front door painted, the porch pole replaced, new coach lights by door and garage, and innumerable small repairs made (leaky faucets leak no more, a light over the soaking tub that has been off for years is back on, a new sill for a window that leaked and leaks no more, new door stops, new front door hardware and the door fits again, a new lighted doorbell, etc.). We told Don our budget and he made everything fit. He provided sound advice on our selections for paint and flooring, always making sure we were happy with the choices. His integrity, honesty, sense of humor and knowledge of all aspects of the work were invaluable. We knew nothing and had to place total trust in him. We were not disappointed. The workers were friendly, considerate, helped with jobs beyond their scope (helped us move some furniture upstairs to downstairs that we couldn't move ourselves) and were absolutely skilled and trustworthy. And in every place I look, I see extras that Don noticed and provided - the sink 2 inches deeper than the one it replaced, the doorstops purchased to match the new front door hardware - on and on. His eye for detail and his commitment to our satisfaction exceeded all expectations. I have an insufficient vocabulary to adequately describe our experience or Rule 4's (Don's) performance - stellar, outstanding, painless, thorough, economical.... It barely begins to describe the experience. I was terrified to start down this road and now, barely 3 months after starting to think about it, I'm sitting in what amounts to a completely new home, no longer worrying about leaks whenever it rains, admiring and enjoying my beautiful deck, and proud to have people come to my home after years of avoiding company. And it took Rule 4 only ten working days to accomplish it all - who are these people anyway??? My super heroes for sure! I have no idea how much the service costs, as our builder footed the bill. It does work -- and works well, holding up under the massive amount of snow we had this past winter -- so I'm sure it's worth the going rate. If we develop another crack in the future, I'm definitely calling these guys. The stuff they use to fill the crack smells pretty bad. If you are sensitive to such things, you probably won't want to be in the house during the repairs and for a few hours after.
