Sorry to see how City Pets has becoming... This was not for me. I remember I came here a decade ago (now I remember why I hasn't been back). The employees never pays attention to whomever comes in. I was greeted by an ancient soda vending machine from last century. There were lots of customers. Most of them wore masks. I have to assume all employees were vaccinated because they didn't wear masks. I believe this store started with selling cat and dog merchandise, along with fish and birds. It is now shrunk to just half aisle in the corner of the store. The shelves are fairly empty. I only found one type of cat food and few dog food. I looked up and down several times for something to buy. I found litter box deodorizer. I grabbed one and proceeded to take a tour of store before check out. A giant cage is located in the back of the store. There were all kinds of exotic pets, not just birds in smaller cages in there. Fish tanks filled up most of store space. Lots of employees working to feed and clean the tanks. It baffles me as why those Asian employees shouting at each other. It was very unprofessional in front of customers. They should use walkie talkie if they don't want to walk up to each other. When I completed my browsing at store, I proceeded to cash register. There were 3 people waiting and one of them negotiating with an employee for a long time. A female employee walked to cashier looked like she was gonna open another register. But she didn't even pay attention to us waiting. There were no social distancing marker. Another customer breathing on my neck. I've had it. I put the item in the shelf and stormed out of the store. read more

This store is great for fish and comes with FREE fish lice!! I've been on the hunt for more fancy goldfish, the bigger the better, and hoped to support a local business rather than importing. I'd read good things about City Pets so decided the hour plus drive was worth it. Boy was I in for a roller coaster of emotions. Walking in I felt like a kid in a candy store there were SO MANY fish. I started looking from tank to tank picking favorites and ignoring any bottom sitters and bloody fins assuming it was due to over crowding. After seeing all the tanks a few times I slowed down to inspect the fins, body shapes and how well the fish that caught my attention were swimming. That's when I spotted the first one and then that's all I could see. Every goldfish/koi tank sprinkled with lice. So if you want lice 10/10 would recommend. Horrible treatment of animals There was a story years ago about them on the news. They were caught throwing away dying parrots in the dumpster like it was nothing. They also sold tattooed fish many years ago too, a practice that is considered unethical by many aquarium enthusiasts. No gravel in the fish tanks. Animals are crammed into small enclosures, especially the baby parrots. I've seen a dead rabbit in a cage before left with live rabbits. I myself witnessed a sick fish that was thrown to a full lobster tank for them to pick at while it was still alive. At least wait till the poor thing is dead! I understand that it's part of the circle of life and all that, but show some mercy and put it out of its misery first. read more

City Pets has a HUGE selection of saltwater and freshwater fish, so if you're looking for an addition to your aquarium, you'll likely find a good candidate here. Most of their fish seemed healthy, but I'm not a fish expert so I can't be sure. The tanks were all pretty clean, and the fish pretty active. It was well-organized, too. Like some other reviewers have noted, the service isn't too great, but if you can manage to catch a store rep's attention, you'll get what you need. In the back, there are several cages of birds like lovebirds, parakeets, cockatiels, and a few more exotic types. I saw a baby umbrella cockatoo the last time I was there, and I think several young cockatiels as well. I went to this store specifically to look for aquarium decor, so that's what I'm rating them on. Unfortunately, they didn't have anything too special. I've seen better selections at Petsmart. Just your run-of-the-mill pirate ships, treasure chests, and dragons here -- all dusty, too. Oh well! So, in conclusion: great selection of fish. Bad selection of aquarium decorations. read more

This place has an amazing selection of fresh water and marine livestock! They have a few plants and all of a hobbyist's needs. I especially like the fact they carry fresh water sharks. I saw a horned and zebra shark this go around. The only drawback of this place is the customer service. There is a huge language barrier and you practically have to grab someone to get their attention. This location is not good for asking questions because the staff seem rushed. So my advice is have in mind what you want before hand and don't expect to have questions answered. Still love the selection though! read more

Place isn't well put together. Not very friendly either. I know I'm a little behind on my review but better late than never. Was looking for puppies before the Covid situation and they had advertised on their website about having puppies but when arrived wasn't greeted when entering and when asked about puppies we were greeted with an attitude and looked at as if we were dumb for asking. Wouldn't give any stars because since we have to that's why they received only 1. They had some cool looking things for fish tanks but place smelled like dirty tanks which isn't cool. Went there to get a hamster after ours died at 2.5 of cancer ... I was looking for a fancy long haired teddy bear, and Petco & Petsmart only sell the regular variety. The hamster room was filthy... there were 2 aquariums with babies though and I asked for help - I mean I was only there for a hamster, right?. A creepy male worker came in and noticed the males & females were mixed and he started grabbing each hamster, flipping them over and they tossing them (about a foot away!) into buckets to separate them. I told him to be gentle with them; they were very just babies! I selected one (to SAVE it!) and it was thrown into a dirty used cardboard box (they have a stack on the floor that they sell their rodents in - I'm all for recycling but it's just gross)! I asked the lady at checkout if it is guaranteed for a week or two or what they guarantee? She replied, "It's alive now!" I raced to get that poor hamster out of there! After several weeks we noticed he was completely deaf (we even blew whistles etc. and he is stone cold deaf)... And now it's been about 6 months and he is blind. I think he can see if something is right in front of him (within 4 inches). He is very sweet, quiet (obviously!) and doesn't run on her wheel much or even a ravenous eater, but all in all that sort of makes for an "easy to care for" hamster. But I do feel sorry for it and I think it was injured or was from some defective genes. I will NOT return him; they would surely feed him to a snake. But when this one passes (and I'll bet it won't live to the old age of 3), I will not go back there for another hamster! UPDATE from yelper - Hamster only lived a little over a year; grew a large tumor in his chest at a rapid rate, stopped eating/drinking and died seemingly peacefully a week or so later. So sad; we really liked the little guy and our kids miss him. read more

Ok, so you know that trusty old hammer that you've had for years. Sure it's bugly (butt ugly, feel free to start using it), rusted, scraped up, and dinged, but it always gets the job done. City Pets does not look fancy nor should you expect it to be, but it gets the job done. You want a huge trophy fish for your 240 gallon? They got arowanas up the ying yang. I will say that City Pets does offer aquatic animals, birds and small animals are notably lower prices than places like Petco and Petsmart. Lovebirds and cockatiels are $49.99 and I believe they are around $100 or more at other mass chains. CIty Pets also has more than just a few of some of the pet offerings, which is distressing with all the finches, rats, and bunnies crammed tightly into a tiny aquarium. I realize some of these animals are sold as prey, so perhaps their comfort is not City Pet's first priority, but it makes me antsy and bothered watching them scramble and crawl all over one another. The few times I've been here, I have noticed that one or a couple of the rabbits or other small animals (the area is inaccessible contained within a small glass-windowed room unless you flag down an employee) always seem to have some sort of eye infection or other physical malady, which is upsetting . . . sigh. Also City Pets ALWAYS seems to have newly-hatched baby birds of a variety of species. A little curious . . . I would like to hope that they've acquired all these animals from a legitimate supplier, but I have my doubts. I will confess that when I was much younger, my gerbils multiplied into dozens of gerbils and I wasn't having any luck pawning them off onto friends. City Pets was the only place that would accept my gerbils because Petco and the like have their strict corporate policies and dedicated suppliers. That was a little strange in retrospect and I can only hope and pray the poor guys weren't offered as snake food or something - oh the circle of life. Freaking oversexed gerbils . . . ! Anyway, in terms of pet supplies, City Pets also offers a whole mess of stuff at competitive pricing. It's pretty much a one-stop-shop kind of place for all your pets' needs and then some. Like someone mentioned below, I can't say service is the bestest - persistence pays off. Tank filled with ick infected fish that were STILL FOR SALE. Other fish stores quarantine and treat their fish before putting them out for sale. This most likely means any fish you get from there is already infected with ick. If you don't mind doing their job for them then go ahead and spend more time and money on treatment that should have already been done. read more

If you have a salt water or fresh water tank, I highly, highly recommend you to stop by. Looks kind of dingy from the outside but don't let that fool you. I don't have an aquarium myself, heck I honestly didn't even care for fishes until I came here. I have my boyfrend to thank for that! He is obsessed with this stuff so I came along with him one day and after seeing all the beautiful tanks of gorgeous fish, I was sold! They sell sting rays, eels, and a huge variety of fish. I'm not really an expert on pricing but after seeing their selection, I can't wait to get a tank of my own! These guys have a vast selection of both freshwater and saltwater fish. They have tons of corals and saltwater invertebrates, too. Not so many freshwater invertebrates though. They also have aquascaping supplies such as dragon (ohko) stone, spider wood, Fluval's new aquascaping substrate, and a lot of other quality stuff. They sell filter parts, which is really handy because they are so small and cheap that they tend to be super overpriced online in order to make them worth selling -- then you may have to pay shipping on top of that. If you need anything for an aquarium and don't want to deal with the mystery of buying online, go here. I took off two stars because of a few things. They have "glass rock" (big chunks of glass) for sale as aquarium decor. Some of the edges of the "rock" are sharp and can seriously injure someone or their fish. They also sell "fossil rock" which is large chunks of calcite that will seriously mess up your tank's pH. Most of the tanks that contain their plants are contaminated with black brush algae, which is the worst kind of algae you can get in your tank. They're also selling a fully stocked, aquascaped aquarium (I think 5 gallons) for something like $300, but it is infested with the algae as well. The freshwater area also stank of that fish tank smell, but you can't expect them to keep all these tanks 100% pristine all the time. I was disappointed they didn't have any rainbowfish or gobies in the freshwater side. Also note: their red cherry shrimp are massively overpriced and not that high quality. Their panda shrimp are high quality, but still pretty overpriced. I wouldn't buy any Neocardinias here. Their woods are also quite expensive, but unless you can get a great deal on shipping online, then it might just be cheaper to buy them here. read more

Purchased a bunny from here, she only lasted over the weekend. Whoever the sales person was didn't give us correct information on rabbit care and only wanted us to buy buy buy. We fed her all the right foods, kept contact to a minimal with our kids around. Bought her on Friday, brought her back that following Monday. They couldn't give us refund, but an exchange for another rabbit. She lasted 6 months, she ate all the time, behavior was happy, she seemed content. But she never gained weight. She passed away last night, the vet told us she had E. Cuniculi and that she most likely obtained it from birth. These people don't care about the health of their pets, they just want your money. read more

After working there for over 30 years, I miss the customer interaction that soon became friends and family. I've seen people grow old with me as they came visiting. Before we introduced the fish to the tank, it was beautiful we had coral, reef ect. growing great, fish were healthy and loving their tank. This place has a good selection of medium end corals. Their cheap frag rack has a bunch of good selections. I've never bought an expensive coral here. I don't think I would take the chance. Make sure you dip your corals when you get home have seen many flatworms in some of the tanks. I have only bought a few fish here and haven't had the best of luck. Quite a few fish have ick everytime I've been in there. I know a lot of the systems are all connected. If you're looking for some deals on some frags this is a good place to go. They also have a large selection on fish. I would check out what you're buying throughly. read more

I've been a frequent customer at least twice a week for years and my face is familiar to every employee that has worked there for the last 3 years. So yesterday I purchased a small filter among other things and got it home and it worked for 2 mins tops as I stood there shooting a video for YouTube(Gatorpool Gators on Youtube) it suddenly stopped pumping, I tried it in a few different power outlets and no luck so I drive back not too far but definitely not walking distance so I wasted gas and time because even with the receipt the same guy who i purchased it from is the same guy who picked it out for me and is the same guy i came to the next day(Today) to swap and told me its not their problem to contact the factory.
