This place is as if Willy Wonka decided to go into the hot dog business. Absolute weiner-Nirvana. I have to come back whenever I am in Richmond. There's no other place like it! read more

Had a delicious experience at City Dogs! No wonder this is a Richmond Staple. City dogs mainly serves hot dogs but they are so inventive with the toppings which makes their offerings so great. The hot dogs themselves have a good snap and are the perfect size for the buns they offer. My partner and I tried two different flavors of dogs each and shared a basket of tots which were huge, crispy and hot. My favorite dog that I got was the Indy Dog, topped with fries and sport peppers which made for a fun bite. The sport peppers offered the perfect amount of spice. Our server was really kind and the food came out very quick. I really dug the sports bar vibe and they offer indoor/outdoor seating which is nice, they could definitely accommodate large groups. This is definitely the place to go for a quick but good meal! The hot dogs are super nostalgic and the food is so reasonably priced, we were able to get 4 hot dogs with fun toppings and a huge basket of tots that we couldn't even finish for just under 25 dollars which felt like a tremendous value. Can't wait to come back and work my way through the menu! read more

I came here a few weeks ago for the first time and really enjoyed it. Don't really remember what I ordered but the hot dogs were really good and I like the options of toppings that they have here. Service was great and the restaurant was empty when I was there but I liked the atmosphere. read more

Small spot that was made for one thing, slangin' dogs. PNW dog was superb with the French onion dog coming in close second. Funk music blaring from behind the counter made the short wait in line fun. Friendly service. read more

Lots of options to choose from, not just hot dogs! Had the Philly dog and tots - the Philly dog was delicious, love the combo of peppers/onions/cheese. The inside was packed so we sat on the patio. I also love that they have a parking lot next door. read more

I will spend the rest of my life fantasizing about this meal. Took a trip out to Virginia and stumbled across city dogs at lunch time one day. Firstly, the service was awesome we had the nicest waitress. The building was nice and clean. Now, I'm not a big fan of hot dogs but this was one of the best meals of my life. The Fan Dog was my pick and it did not disappoint. The flavors went so well together and the dog itself was perfection. Our server recommended the Carolina Dog so we had to try that too and it was somehow even better than the first one. The cheese curds and fan sauce was great too! And the prices are insanely good. I will 100% be making another 16 hour drive just for you city dogs. If this establishment has no fans it means I am dead. I can't recommend this enough. read more

Food for pickup was made super quick! I got two soy dogs with ketchup and mustard and a side of tots. Total was 20 after tip. Workers are super nice and so are the patrons. During the day it's not super loud or crowded but I don't know about the evenings. I believe they have trivia nights. As a vegan, this place hits the spot as much as it needs to. I enjoy the vegan hotdogs and the tots. I am not a fan of the vegan chilli but that's just personal preference. Husband is not veg and enjoys this place as well. read more

If you want a hot dog, this is THE hotdog of richmond. The quality of the dog is so good and snappy, especially considering the price!!! The value of the drinks and dogs here is a rare find nowadays. The corndog nuggets are also great. They have traditional toppings and some that you would never expect but they work perfectly. When we went the service was pretty slow but they were busy, so take that into account. Keep in mind, this a bar with a dive bar type of feel, sticky floors type of vibe. But kids were present when we went at dinner time so use your best judgement. read more

Awesome selection of hot dogs. The two I ordered (Richmond and Carolina) were really good and CHEAP!!!! Hot dog itself had a ton of snap. Service was great and was a good spot to have a beer and watch sports. Super great bang for your buck spot. read more

The service here is terrible. Our waitress took over 20 minutes to come to our table, then served us straight attitude the whole night. The Honolulu dog was yummy. But my 3 bites of hot dog did not make up for the slow and unkind service here at City Dogs. read more

Hands down the best hot dog restaurant we've ever been to. The prices are extremely fair and the dogs are loaded with a variety of flavors and styles even with some fun monthly creations! Great place to spend a late night out or to just swing by for a quick bite. There's outdoor seating and stools at the bar to enjoy. It gets pretty lively in the weekends, but it's a great atmosphere and we will definitely be coming back again. read more

This is more than a restaurant...it's a bar for locals and carries that genuine atmosphere. I dropped my dogs off after our walk so I could try it out before my wife got back in town and lived it. Ordered Cinci and Coney Island hot dogs...both spectacular. Great servive, vibe, all of it. Cute patio you can get to after you go inside. I'll be back. read more

Once again I was in an outing with my family and we were trying to find something cheap. None of us talked about getting hot dogs but we decided to go anyway. I was surprised that the glizzys were catered so I just settled with a Louisiana Dog and Coney Island with Tater Tots. The chili dogs were pretty decent but not too special so I'll rate it a 7/10, the atmosphere for a small bar was pretty chill so I'll rate it 9/10 and the service was pretty good so I'll give it a 9/10. read more

Food & service was great. Dogs have great snap and flavor. I'd definitely plan to visit again soon.

Friendly and quick service! Menu has quite a few different hot dogs but also lots of other things! Today I tried Philly dog with onions, peppers and cheese that was crispy on the edges - yummy! Also had a basket of fries - huge order for two people, fries were perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft inside. We also ordered corn dog nuggets - not my favorite, a bit overly fried and oily but I was able to peel batter off and eat nice size hot dog chunks! Sorry I got no pics but we were hungry. Restaurant is not very big but there was plenty of tables and seats at the bar. There are few big tv screens with different sports channels on if that's what you fancy! read more

Is there anything better than lunch at City Dogs?? My husband and I being creatures of habit, I was alarmed to see that the Boston Dog was not on the new menu, but thankfully they can still make it! A cold beer and a basket of crispy tater tots and I was in heaven! read more

Tried their monthly special and a classic hot dog. Had some chili tater tots and onion rings on the side. Went for a pitcher of Blue Moon. The chili tots were so good, I'm craving them right now! Crazy good hot dogs. I had the Chicago and the Manhattan. Place was busy when I was there, but the server was attentive.

I've been to both locations, but this one is my favorite. The vibe is so fun and cool! I always receive great service from staff, and of course the food and drinks are good! I try something new every time I go. This time my son tried the steak and cheese and he gave it a rave review! The bartenders are experts! Every once in a while I'll get a mixed drink, which is always made perfectly, but I usually stick to my Triple Jam cider! read more

Average hot dog place. Only thing cool is the amount of different flavors/styles of dogs that you can get. I have been frequenting this place since 2012-2016 and was delightfully relieved when I saw it was still going strong when I moved back in 2022. As someone who is not vegetarian but has many vegetarian family and friends, I was surprised at how delicious the vegan dog/soy chili is. It is actually my go-to (Santa fe style). The jalapeños are fresh, not pickled, which is a HUGE plus for me. The fries are pretty good. I've tried the corn dog nuggets a couple times and they're a little over cooked or the batter is off. I also can't quite put my finger in why I'm not a fan of the ketchup, considering it's probably a generic/mass-produced ketchup. But it's definitely not a deal-breaker for me. There's a wide selection of styles so it's easy to find something for everyone. It doesn't have a ton of staff so waiting for food/drinks can take a minute, but it's worth the wait if you have time. read more

Y'all. This was my first time in Richmond and we were just walking around the area looking at murals and got hungry. Not being from the area, I thought City Dogs was "hole in the wall" kind of food joint - but you find the best foods in those places...so I wanted to try it. It was unassuming from the outside. However it was very welcoming inside - definitely not a "hole in the wall" joint...but we did find amazing food inside. The onion rings were delicious and my grilled chicken sandwich was cooked so perfectly. Definitely fresh ingredients! read more

Love the hot dogs here. I think they're so creative and so good. They are also so cheap so I come here very often

6/14/20 approximately noon. For some reason I have been craving hot dogs. I can go all year long under normal conditions and not even eat a hotdog. But lately I think in the last five days I've eaten hotdogs three, weird. Anyway, today I was craving a hot dog. When I googled where I could get a hotdog it took me to City Dogs. Since restaurants are not really busy because of the quarantine there was not anybody inside eating. However, there were a few people outside eating on the patio. The two girls that work there were very nice and helpful and answered my questions, really nice people. After staring at the menu and not being able to really see it without glasses I asked the waitress if I could just tell her what I wanted. she was really good at helping me out. I ordered two Coney Island hot dogs and added sauerkraut. Soooo, the hotdogs are tiny. T.I.N.Y. I would think in a hotdog restaurant that they have all kinds of different size hotdogs, but they don't. I'm trying to make logic of how tiny these hotdogs are. The only thing I could come up with is they have to be small so that you can get all the toppings in the bun. That's all I can come up with. Even if that's the case, I prefer my hot dog bigger. I don't know if y'all remember the Big 8 hotdogs but those were a good size for me. Whatever happened to them they're not in the store anymore? All this said, the hotdog was really good I just wanted more meat. Not only was it tasty, it also presented well. It's worth checking out. Ca read more

This is only the second time I've been here and definitely the last. We ordered right away and almost hour later we were still waiting on our three hot dogs. They had been ready for a very long time but the waitress would not pick them up. At one point the cook called out to her to pick up some of the many orders waiting to be delivered because they were running out of room to set them down and she made a face at him and stomped off clearly angry he asked her to deliver the food. The food just sat and sat until she came to give it to us and it was ice cold. We left. It was ridiculous. read more

What's unique with City Dogs is that they use snap dogs which gives them a different crunch than your typical hot dog. After 9pm (on weekends as far as I know) you have to show the bouncer your ID and order food/drinks from the bar. It's definitely not the healthiest option in Richmond but these hot dogs sure are delicious. read more

City Dogs is a great stop for a drink or a bite to eat, depending on your preference. They serve good, cheap bar food, and a dizzying selection of hot dogs. I got the Chicago-style dog, which came loaded up with classic toppings. The bun was a bit little stale and flavorless, but the hotdog itself was good. My main complaint was that they put whole spicy peppers on top, which made it hard to bite into. I also tried the onion rings, which were super crispy and delicious. The service was extremely slow. We didn't mind because we were catching up with some friends, but it was around 6 on a Sunday and we probably waited at least 30 minutes for our food. The bar was not very crowded, so I can't imagine what the wait is like on a Friday or Saturday night. Even so, the food was extremely cheap and filling! read more

Can't wait for Saturday because I am heading back to this place. Everything I had hit the spot. The price is definitely right. My plan going forward will be making my self a regular at City Dogs. Every Saturday I will be there and start trying everything in the menu. I highly recommend the corn dogs as your starter. The fries were cooked to perfection. Just the right crunch for both. This place also has burgers and sandwiches. Grab a seat inside or outside and enjoy the food. I wish I can remember our server because she really New how to juggle her tables. Popped in on a Saturday afternoon for a quick bite while waiting for my computer to be ready at the shop next door. The bar was full of VCU types watching basketball and the 2 bartenders were quite busy. Menu has an extensive list of hot dogs. I wound up ordering the Philly something dog and it was okay. Fries were good and the bartender was friendly and attentive even though she was busy. If you want a bar to hang out with friends that's walking distance to VCU, this place is it.
