I'm a Texas man, born and bred...even though I'm currently residing here in Indiana. So I miss good ol' Texas smokehouses. Thank goodness for City Barbecue! They do it right. When you get a hankering...they can absolutely scratch that bbq itch. The service is always great and they are consistently fast and efficient, even when it's busy. Everything on the menu is worth trying, but we definitely have our favorites, like the corn pudding and the baked beans. We always have to have a variety of meats, cuz it's too dang hard to pick just one! My wife loves their (super moist and tender) brisket sandwiches accompanied by their original bbq sauce. We also tried the Not A Sloppy Joe sandwich and the brisket chili with all the toppings...both were great . I have an awful sweet tooth, so we never leave without having dessert. I'm a banana pudding junkie and I love their addition of caramel sauce to my old favorite...but the peach cobbler is top notch too! I love city barbecue, specially their chicken quarter entree. I get it with 2 sides and a drink for like ~$15 It's very juicy and works great with any of their sauces, we love trying all of their sauces every time, we love their hush puppies too This is a quick service restaurant so you order on the counter and they bring you out their food, they're friendly and fast This particular location doesn't have much tables but we haven't had to wait for any tables, I think most people order food and get it to go. Very good barbecue place on the southside. It's part of a chain, and the food quality seems to be similar at all of the different city barbecues that we have gone to. This one had some very nice staff at the front counter and got us our food relatively quickly. The food was all hot and fries were just made. Hush puppies were just made. The food tasted good. This was probably the worst barbecue I've ever had. The mac & cheese tasted really cheap and bland, and the brisket was super stiff and hard to eat. The pulled pork was soggy and didn't have much flavor either. The sauces were OK, but they couldn't save the food. The fries were actually pretty good, they just needed a little more salt. I don't patronize City Barbeque as frequently as I used to. While their service quality and speed of delivery is excellent, the consistency of their brisket sandwich (my favorite) is never the same. On some occasions the meat will be fall-off-the-bone tender. On other occasions it will be rather dry and chewy. Perhaps its the different qualities of the beef they buy that's the culprit.. Perhaps it's cooking times. But if I could rely on the brisket always being fall-of-the bone tender, I'd certainly be back there a lot more frequently. read more

Three natural gas powered smokers operating behind City Barbeque, with a few sticks of wood laying next to the smokers. Those sticks of wood may have been laying there for years...unused. This was my first time dining in but I have ordered catering and delivery many times. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but the decor was very rustic and woodsy. We ordered and got our order quickly even though it was pretty busy. The food was good. I just started eating mine and forgot to take a photo. The cornbread was my favorite part. I also love the swine wine, vinegar based sauce. After you order, they have a drink station and a very well-stocked condiment station. What a stellar introduction to Hoosien barbecue. The City Sampler and those smoked and fried wings - we had a ball with this seven or so restaurant chain. Everything tasted like it took some time in the smoker. My wife couldn't care less about turkey from any barbecue joint and she happily tolerated this version. The corn pudding also gets an upvote from her. It was her first time having some, but a bad batch of it would still make for a striking first impression. My absolute favorites were the sausage and the wings. The pork casing and seasoned beef filling - think I could eat the sausage consecutively for a long time without getting tired of it. And the wings...that brine made for such a satisfyingly tangy bite to the well-done exterior of the chicken. All of the meal elements were quite indicative of a place that has actual smokers onsite and pitmasters in place to make sure the quality of the meats they serve taste mighty close to the neighborhood spot I pray you've had the pleasure of knowing at one point in your life. The kind of place that's only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, which makes visiting such a trek because of the hours long wait it takes to get a plate of anything. City feels like the best restaurant version of that. Clean presentation. Genuine smoked flavoring. Coming from the land of LA, there can be a lot of half-stepping with the pretense of authentic barbecue. The food is fresh and quickly served casual style where you place your order at the counter, get drinks at a fountain yourself (which means refills too) and then they call your name with your order. It is served on a fun metal tray with colorful parchment paper underneath. They have vegetarian sides, a salad and then for those meat lovers all the variety of delicious meat. They have a ton of barbeque sauces to choose from so you can try a variety! Their other sides are home cooked good like corn casserole, green beans cooked in pork, baked beans with brisket pieces and not to be forgotten their hand cut French fries! City BBQ on the southside of Indy is conveniently located just off Highway 31. My family and I have dined there several times over the years, and we've never had a bad meal. This past Thanksgiving, we decided to order a smoked turkey and some sides, and I'm happy to say the turkey was absolutely delicious - moist, fresh, and full of flavor. The sides were equally great. Although there was a small issue with our pickup time, the manager, Andrew, went above and beyond to make things right. He's one of the most professional and humble people I've ever encountered and truly deserves a mention. Came here Saturday after a workout since my friend was craving barbecue. Not my first pick after an ab punching work out but I figured I'd get something light. I was tempted to get some hearty barbecue after walking in as the scent of meat just smacked me in the face but I stuck to my guns. So many wonderful options on the menu, I decided to go with the smoke house salad with smoked chicken, ranch dressing. It was amazing! The portion was huge that I shared with my friend and she shared her beef brisket. The beef brisket was tender and flavorful. They offer a variety of barbecue sauces that is self serve when you dine in. The barbecue sauces are on the sweeter side, I liked all of them but the more runny vinegar based was my fave. Cleanliness lacking! We sat in the glassed- in room off the main dining room by the outside windows. The elbow height ledge hasn't been cleaned in what looks like a very long time: dead bugs, food crumbs and dirt over the entire surface. This was my first visit to a City Barbecue. One would think based on the size of the building from the outside they might have table service but it is all self serve meaning your order from the counter and pick up from the counter. The line starts immediately to your right upon entering through the main door. There is a sign hanging from the ceiling with this indication. I arrived just five minutes after 12 noon and there was no waiting in line. In fact, there weren't more than three people in line at any one time from what I could see. I was very happy to see the number of calories listed up on the big menu sign. It caused me to change my side from Potato Salad at 450 calories to Green Beans with Bacon at only 90 calories. And the green beans were superb, just like grandma used to slow cook them too. I think there were the best restaurant green beans I've had in the last two or three years! I was also very pleased you could order Ribs by the Bone. I can't finish a half rack and left overs never taste as good as they do the first time in the restaurant, right? So I ordered three bones. They come "dry" which is fine. There are eight different sauces available. I went with the Sweet that included chunks of onion according to the little sign. I wanted to try the Original and should have got both in hindsight. But the Sweet BBQ sauce worked great for me! I wish the people manufacturing plastic cups for sauces would make them bigger or even in the shape of a rib bone. It would make things simpler. That goes for the little ketchup cups at other places too. I also loved that there were several Diet Soda selections instead of the usual one. Diet Dr Pepper and Diet Mountain Dew or Zero, were available as well as the cola one. Just so long as there are diet soda choices instead of just one so Kudos for that in of itself. Plenty of parking is available at this location. I did not hit the restroom so can't speak to it's condition. As somebody who used to love City BBQ, it's not only depressing to see how the quality of the food has gotten notably worse, (Especially the fries with cheese and bacon) but also that the cost skyrocketed at the same time in recent years still. It's obvious that the fault is with the chain itself and not just the location as some items are also now either missing nutrition information or has conflicting information now. I really hope this chain takes action to correct this as I'm not the only person who's seen the massive downgrade. read more

First time trying this place. I ordered the brisket and peach cobbler. I should have know it was not going to be good when they did ask if I want lean, moist, or mixture for my brisket. The brisket was dry and salty. Ended up giving the rest to my dog. The peach cobbler was not good either. Also, I was frustrated they didn't fill the container. I got the container 2/3 full. There is no need for me to ever go back to the place. Maybe other stuff might be better but I'm not going to continue to spend my money there to find out...lol. read more

We ordered the sampler with 3 meats and 2 sides. The meats we chose were chicken and brisket. Both the chicken was cold and the brisket was barely warm! The brisket was almost non existent, two tiny thin slices mostly fat. The macaroni was dry, chewy and cold. The fries were the only item that was hot. This is the second time our food has been cold like this. We thought the last time was just a fluke but we discovered this visit that nothing has changed. This used to be a great place to eat but now it is just not worth the time and money! I waited a long time at the counter to notify staff about our food but they were too busy so we just left and will never return again! read more

We ordered carry-out online and they got the order wrong. I ordered a sampler and instead of getting sausage, ribs, and pulled pork, I received sausage, brisket, and pulled chicken. Receipt had it right so not sure how they got it wrong, unless they just don't care. The pulled chicken was absolutely disgusting and could not be eaten. Finally, customer service was not helpful. The person I talked with on the phone (after waiting 20 minutes on hold) had little empathy. I visited for lunch over the weekend with family and it was delicious. I tried the side platter which comes with 3 sides for $7.99. i had mac and cheese, bacon cheese fries, and hush puppies. I split an order of the chicken tenders with my sister in law. The chicken was tender and juicy! The employees were very kind and even brought us a large order of the bacon cheese fries since they took a little longer than the rest of the food. This is one of my favorite restaurants, so it pains me to realize their standards have dropped. The food is still good and the staff are polite. The service has dropped in quality. Three of my past orders were incomplete. It didn't matter if the order was online for carryout, or in person. They gave us some extra food or rewards bucks to make up for two of them. For the remaining visit they completed a to-go portion of an order as we were leaving (and I asked a few times already) after dining in. The cleanliness has also dropped as of late.
