With only one free night in central Indiana, I was so lucky to happen upon Gather Around BBQ's brick and mortar location. Dinner there was the unexpected highlight of my trip. I ordered the half-rack of ribs, which were impossibly tender and flavorful. Jalapeño Poppers and Mac and Cheese were out of this world. We also ordered a BBQ'd pulled pork sandwich. The bun was perfect and the meat was out of this world. Service was fast and oh so nice. The ambiance perfectly suits the food, charmingly no-nonsense yet warm. 100% will go back any chance I get. I wasn't just expecting to find great bbq in Martinsville, but there it was highly recommended by my friend Richard Walton on Yelp. Their cute little restaurant is across from the post office. I wanted a sandwich to go and they had $13 lunch specials that included a selection of sandwiches, a side and drink. I selected the brisket sandwich with spicy bbq sauce, cole slaw and I grabbed a unsweetened ice tea. The clerk was friendly and I had a short wait. The dining room is neat and tidy with old photos of Martinsville and subtle pig decor. Outside is a really nice covered patio where pets are welcome. My food came out quickly in a paper bag with my name on it. The BBQ brisket was phenomenal. The sandwich had several generous slices of thick brisket with slightly burnt ends, but moist and tender inside. The meat melted into the bun, which was soft and fresh. This was the best bbq sandwich I'd had in a long time. The spicy sauce, came on the side, was really delicious, too. The cole slaw is prepared in-house, finely chopped with a sweet vinegar dressing. We typically visit 2-3 times a month and over the last 2-3 visits I can say that the service has started to slip first . The service is so far from what it used to be that it's a disappointment , and they aren't that busy . Second the food has started to slip , I think this comment speaks for its self . This restaurant is what Yelpin is all about. A small local family business that is top notch. I am glad that I have the opportunity to share my experience. It dereseves all of the praise that it is getting and then some. The restaurant is located in an up-in-coming area of downtown Martinsville. The area was dead, less than a year ago. It looks awesome now though. I placed my order online, through their website directly. I found that the Grub Hub website had higher prices for some reason. I will probably call my order in next time. I ordered the baked beans, 1/2 slab of ribs, 3 slices of candied bacon, and fries. Quick tip, don't forget the sauce. The food was amazing. The candied bacon was heavenly, perfectly cooked, the fries were tasty, the beans were perfect and the ribs were so good that I eat them so fast that I did not even get a picture of it. The service there is awesome. Carol was great. She was extremely helpful and stopped by my table and made sure that everything was good. I seemed like she personally knew everyone that came in there by the personable way that she conversed with them. After I was done eating, Carol came over and had a chat with me. She told me about the restaurant and suggested that I call my order in next time because there are some menu items that are not put up online, most notably the candied BLT sandwich (made with their candied bacon). Yes, please. I am definitely getting that next time. It sounds absolutely delicious. The restaurant has free street parking out front. It is very clean a spacious. They even have a heated patio area with the retractable plastic walls that can be raised when the weather is good. I was very impressed as to how clean the place was. I do not know if it is a law or not that you must visit this restaurant when you are near Martinsville, but if it is not, it should be. I highly recommend this restaurant. i placed an online order through their website. ordered the loaded nachos with no bbq sauce, no pork and two sides and then a brisket sandwich with two sides and then two extra sides of mac and cheese. when i opened my order it was missing the sandwich altogether and the nachos still had the bbq sauce on it but the worst part of it was when i took a bite of the nachos i bit into a chicken bone. i would have went back to let the store know but they were closed already since they closed early that day. the only saving grace here was that the staff was really nice when i picked up the food and the mac and cheese is amazing but those other things are what caused my rating. hoping they do better next time :( read more

First thing you need to know is that you can dine indoors in their dining room. The Yelp app will not give me dine-in option to update their dine-in service so you will know it is available! We came to get carry out and were pleasantly surprised we could eat here. For lunch on a Sunday we were able to distance ourselves appropriately since only four tables were occupied. I ordered the Half-Rack BBQ Ribs and she got the Hot (Cold is available too) Pulled Chicken Sandwich. We both ordered the Potato Salad side. The potato salad was excellent. This is the kind I grew up with and the real deal in my book. Every one seems to try to change it lately but this potato salad is what I prefer and perfection. Although I was unable to finish the half rack, I did put three empty bones on the plate. These were some of the meatiest ribs ever. You sure can't buy them like this in the grocery store. I paid $10 for a store bought bun and dry pulled chicken!? Had I seen this before I got home I would have demanded my money back. (Takeout order) I got home after they handed me my "sandwich" and noticed what I really got. This place is a rip off . The sandwich came with no sides, NO BBQ sauce and I waited 10 minutes. It was cold, dried out chopped chicken...not juicy and not worth what I paid. How do you call yourself a barbecue place and then you give me a pulled chicken sandwich with no barbecue? I've been to this place twice, I tried the pulled pork sandwich and it was subpar, but it did have BBQ sauce..., I've tried now the chicken sandwich and it's terrible. I have mixed feelings about this place. We ordered ribs, 2 side of brisket - 1 shredded, 1 sliced, cheesy potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, blueberry cobbler and frosted brownie. Meats - I really liked the ribs a the sauce that was on it. They were very tender and nicely smoked. The wife felt like the sauce was a little heavy with vinegar. She had the shredded brisket. She felt it was very salty l. We both thought the texture was just too soft for our preference and we definitely preferred the sliced. It really was well prepared. Sides - She loved the coleslaw where as I thought it was a little on the bland side. The cheesy potatoes missed the mark for both of us. Hands down the baked beans were the star of the show. These were amazing! Multiple types of beens cooked perfectly with bacon, onion and seasoning. This should be available in a large to go pint or quart. Half a pan is $46. Wish we had ordered the fries , large hand cut & seasoned. Next time they will be on my plater. Desserts were also hit and miss. The brownie was under cooked and had hard bits. Wife through over half of it away. I wouldn't take a second bite. When is a brownie not a winner? The blueberry cobbler was severed warm. We just love this place! We there quite often but today my review is for their catering service. We used them this weekend for a rehearsal dinner for our son's wedding. It was so good and everyone enjoyed it so much. We knew our bbq would be great as always but the Mac n cheese was over the top good. People kept going back for it! But for me the star of the show was the apple crisp dessert. Wow! You really need to stop in and try this. I'll be getting this on a regular basis now! On our hiking day we wanted a quick yet hearty meal before heading back home so stopped in to try this local spot. I have a thing for food trucks so decided if they started as a food truck they were bound to be good - and I was right! You order at the counter then they bring it to your table so a pretty simple procedure. They didn't have our first choice so we opted for sides of green beans, mac n cheese, potato salad and tater tots with a loaded Mac n cheese for my husband. It was pretty fast coming out and had delicious flavors! I must admit my favorite though was their house made Barbeque sauce used on the tater tots! It was just the right sweet to tang ratio and made a perfect compliment to the heaviness of the meal. We loved every bite and would definitely try those or other sides again. The owner asked what we ordered and he said they gave us a half order and went back to the kitchen to fix the mistake. We would of never known. That's going above and beyond and shows me that he cares about his business. The girl that took our order was very helpful and explained everything nicely. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. Parking was easy at 2:00 p.m. along the street in front of the restuarant. My friend requires handicapp parking and we still had to fight passing traffic to get her out of the vehicle. It was frightening as the traffic lights changed with the oncoming traffic coming inches from us. As you enter you're instructed to place your order at the counter, pay, then select a table. We chose to grab a table, 4-tops or high-tops, first so my friend could sit down. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with lots of wood, minimal wall decor and delightful sunlight coming through the windows. The menu was on the wall above the cash register. They offer all the standard BBQ options from ribs to pulled pork sandwiches plus numerous sides. By the way, everything on the menu is ala cart. We both ordered the pulled pork sandwich which was plentiful, good sauce and lean meat. I also ordered the cheesy potatoes and green beans. Both were very good and I'd order again. I ordered 3 slices of candied bacon and my friend ordered 6, expecting to split with me. The bacon was perfectly cooked, not burnt or overly crispy from the sugar. The bacon is a $1.00 a slice and worth every penny. Our friends highly recommended the ribs and I'd like to try those on our next visit. This place deserves ZERO stars. Tonight we had a terrible experience. Our server was not friendly or welcoming. I was denied getting a kids meal. Due to dietary restrictions I never get an adult meal. I can eat 6 oz of food at a time due to having stomach surgery. We got our meal about 45 minuets after ordering. Food was cold, pulled chicken was very tough. Mac & cheese was awful. Very bland and cold as well. Our server never returned to the table to give drink refills or check on the food. I made eye contact with the server hoping she would bring the bill over but she waited longer. I found dried food on my cup. Brought it to the servers attention and she didn't act one bit concerned. Never was offered another drink in a new cup. That is NASTY! I was also charged $1.00 extra for "hot" food... I went there to eat? I didn't know I had to pay for hot food at the restaurant. When I asked the server she said "oh yeah it's for getting the food hot"... who wants cold chicken? Ironic enough I was charged $1.00 for "hot" chicken that was cold. This place has went so downhill. Been there a few times in the past and it was decent. That was a while ago. Just went tonight. What a difference. First, if you walk in the door and see lots of customers, turn around and leave. It takes forever and a day to get your meal. Tonight, it took 50 minutes to get a damn fancy hot dog with toppings. And when we got our food, it was lukewarm!!! Like it had been setting someplace 10 minutes. I watched the cooks. Never before have I seen cooks move so slow and with zero sense of urgency than I saw tonight.
