I was shocked to find a great selection remaining at 2pm when we stopped in on a whim. There was a variety of freshly baked bread and rolls, donuts, and other items. I was also can't get over the reasonable prices! We've had various things from City Bakery over the years. This time I took home one of the pretzel rolls, a few donuts, and some breadsticks - everything was really good, and the staff were friendly and helpful. read more

Very much overrated when it comes to the 'hard rolls'. As EU born, those are the least desirable ''Brötchen' . The speciality breads may be the real thing but has yet TBD. The Bakery's prices are affordable compared to others in the area. Our new favorite! My family and I sample bakeries all over the state, and this one is a true hidden gem! We tried a cruller, pineapple filled doughnut, Fritter, bread, and cherry/cream coffee cake. There just aren't many bakeries like this one anymore. Once as common as Buffalo Nickels, bakeries were a fixture in every town and the source of "...our daily bread." Sadly, local bake shops and Buffalo Nickels have all but vanished. But Sheboygan is lucky to have this gem. I think I gained three pounds just walking in the door and taking a deep breath. The aroma is amazing and instantly took me back to my childhood, when my mother worked at the long-gone Militzer's Bakery. Case after case temps you with goodies of all kinds, and loaves of bread that you'll never see at a supermarket. After deliberation, while waiting in line, I opted for a cherry Danish to go with a fresh cup of coffee in my car, and I took along a loaf of Müesli bread. It has an astounding flavor that explodes when you bite into it. (Not to mention its health benefits!) I know that, from now on, any trip north on I-43 is going to require a detour into downtown Sheboygan for a visit to the City Bakery! read more

It's okay. The donuts and breads are good enough, but nothing really to write home about. The issue for me lies with the staff. They were super rude and condescending when I came in. We said something about having never been there before, and she rolled her eyes and was like "It's not like we've been here for 82 years or anything." (I honestly don't remember the actual number, but you get my point). Great! I'm glad that you've been around for decades, genuinely. But believe it or not we don't all live here. I'm from Illinois. And there's a famous resort 10 minutes away, golf tournaments, or even just the invention of cars that let us move from place to place. There's no need to act like a jerk about it. I won't be back, when Johnston's Bakery is down the block and closer to where I'm staying. read more

During our visit to Sheboygan, we explored the somewhat unusually tranquil main street shopping district in late March. On the fringes of the shopping area on Michigan Ave., the City Bakery stands out as one of the most distinguished buildings on its block. We stopped in to see what they have. Their display window is rather boring for a bakery, with some plastic bunnies and somewhat tacky decor, but once inside you see what they are all about. Breads of all kinds, cookies, brownies, apple pie by the sheet pan and rolls. There's a separate case they have on display just for all the different types of breads that they offer so you know what they look like. Above the bread counter on the wall, there is even a framed wooden model of the bakery storefront made from assorted pieces of colored wood. We came around 8 AM to get a loaf of raisin bread and a seeded whole grain bead, which is my favorite thing when I buy it at a farmers market. To our disappointment there were few breads available since they were still too hot to cut or still in the oven. The lady asked what we wanted and took our names down. When we were done at the resort and on our way out of town, we came back to the bakery. Sure enough, they set aside the loaves of bread for us. I also got a peach fritter. The bread was just the way I like it and not too heavy like some whole-seeded breads. The fritter was good but I've had better ones elsewhere. And my younger son got a plain vanilla long john, which was maybe 1-1/2 times the size of a Dunkin Donut equivalent. City Bakery had a constant stream of customers each time we came in here. They got a good product and it's made fresh, so no complaints there. If you're looking for fresh bread in Sheboygan, this is the place. read more

When I first started going to City Bakery, I was new to the area, and really, had no idea of where else to go. I was content with runningin, orfering a few connamon rolls and leaving. Well, twice in the last 3 times, I stood there and was floored at the conversation behind the counter. When one customer left, the one lady said "shes like that every time she comes in!". Then, as I wasnt standing in front of the sweet roll counter, they continued to gossip. The 2nd time was about a coworker who had the AUDACITY to come out to the front (so she must work in the back) and as it was crowded both behind the counter and in front of the counter) and get some donut thing. Look, I work hard for my.money. If you want any of it, give me a reason to patronize your business. Gossiping and backbiting employees who dont care who they talk about is NOT the key. Best bakery around and they know it which means your not going to get friendly helpful customer service. You get what you get and don't throw a fit because there are 10 people in line behind you that will gladly take. The folks answering the phone are downright nasty.
