Dill was a nice touch. The steak part could have been a bit more seasoned but it was good. Potatoes seasoned well. The salmon avocado toast was good. Def squeeze the lemon on it. Saturday morning brunch spot I've been wanting to try since I moved to Hempstead. They had a multitude of dishes to choose from. Out of shrimp, so I had the avocado curry toast and black coffee. The coffee was rich and delicious. Breakfast was cooked perfectly. The hot sauce was a a perfect addition to the egg. *hot sauce was excellent and should be sold in the stores. Had lunch here the last day of work at the Elementary. Did not disappoint, we even gave the Collard Greens another go! My hubby had the Brisket Rueben, though not a bad sandwich, he wasn't prepared for a pan fried piece of meat. Great taste, would recommend to anyone to give it a try. I have the BLT and wow! I don't typically eat sandwiches, when I do it is a rare occurrence. I will order BLTs and French Dips when I do. This BLT with the Avocado and tomato relish was one of the best I have eaten outside of making my own. recommend this sandwich for luck. I'm not a big waffle fry person, so I got the tomato basil soup and it was the best idea I had all idea. Great flavor, creamy and seasoned perfectly. Last time we ate here the Collards were super salty. They definitely took note and changed that. Collard greens for sure is a great side! We will no longer be working in Hempstead, but we've talked about coming this way for our dinners out if we are not staying local in Brenham. Where we typically go to College Station or Houston for big celebrations, there is no need when this gem is just down the road! read more

Wow!! Is it really Hempstead?? We met family in Hempstead for lunch yesterday and I was truely shocked when visiting Citizens, (with all due respect to Hempstead) I couldn't believe a restaurant of this "quality" and ambience was found in downtown Hempstead. First class all the way! In the past to find an elevated dining experience you'd have to drive to Houston. There's a nice selection of entrees on combination brunch/lunch menu offered at 11:30 AM. So many great options it was really hard to decide, making return visit a must. I finally decided on the Shrimp and Grits after a strong suggestion. The dish as up there with the Shrimp & Girts from Brennan's, Eugene's, Rainbow Lodge and other high-end restaurants in Houston. Four colossal shrimp (15 shrimp or less per pound) were served in creamy grits with bits of andulle sausage and a mildly spicy sauce. Others in our party order the Citizen Hamburger, Challa French Toast, Chicken & Red Velvet Waffles, and Curry Avocado Toast. We shared tastes and each dish was worth raving about. After experiencing the great entrees we could resist some deserts. At the table we had Carrot Cake, Cream Brulee, Bread Pudding, and Coconut Cream Pie. Fortunately everyone was willing to share and we all got a taste of everything. The Carrot Cake won the contest with it's glaze d candied carrot crowning the large slice. Citizens is a little pricey for Hempstead, but the price is respective of the high quality. They have great wine list offering some great well known labels. read more

This is our fourth time to visit. Each time is the same experience, great food, good portions, friendly staff and a fun environment. So far from fish to steak to burger to pork chop and more has been very, very good. Some items rotate but the core seem to be always available. My first visit to Citizens was about a month ago on "steak night". I ordered a chicken fried steak and while a bit pricey, it was almost the size of the plate and tasty. Ample mashed potatoes underneath it as well. Returned last Thursday night with some new friends. Ordered the chicken fried steak again. This time it was literally half as big and the potato service was less than half of what was served a month ago. The price had increased $2 as well. A 14 oz ribeye is now $58. It was $52 when I was there a month ago and something like $34 on steak night. I learned from a friend that it had gone up to $40 on steak night but the restaurant has since then done away the the steak night special altogether. And lastly, you get NOTHING (bread, dinner salad, side vegetable etc. with your steak. I personally will never go back as these prices are simply unreasonable to me, especially in a small town like Hempstead. I will say that on both visits the service I experienced was excellent. If you want to be a Brunch location and the hours of operation on the front door says you are closed on Sunday and Monday but the hours listed on Yelp say open on Sunday, who is right? I went to this location at 10am on Sunday and there was no indication that the business was open. If you want 5 star quality food, coffee and customer service then this is the place to go. I have been twice and each time has been unforgettable. The food is amazing. I had the pork chops which are out of this world good. They pay attention to detail as the plating is straight off the cover of a magazine on every dish. Don't mess the chefs family recipe collard greens. My wife hates collard greens but tried these and loved them as well. It was funny as we were oohing and aahing about how good they were and both couples at tables beside us ordered them and were also impressed. The wait staff is very customer focused and the managers come around and introduce themselves which we appreciated. The cocktails are amazing and the coffee is brewed fresh on every cup. Really a neat place and the atmosphere gives it that extra touch. They have really done a great job decorating the place, even keeping the old safe as a dining room.
