Just like many of us finding someone to do our hair is a challenge.. we either love the cut and hate the color or love the color and hate the cut. I know, I know our hair will grow out from a bad cut or we can "fix" our color but nothing is worse paying a bunch of money and being unhappy! But on the flip side nothing is better than finding a salon where you leave loving both! I have found that here! First off the girls listen- so when I show them a picture or explain a haircut I'll get exactly what I ask for. They also will give their professional opinion- I mean they are the ones that went to school for this. So listen to their suggestions. I have paid a lot for hair, and gotton cheap haircuts I believe they are right in the middle. I also believe in "you get what you pay for" they have a menu on their website with prices so you know what to expect. I suggest making appointments as they are busy.. They always take their time and don't rush through so they can get to their next client. So keep in mind when you do make your appointment depending on what your getting- don't be in a rush yourself... it ruins the process of taking time for yourself and indulging in just you time. If you have been wanting a new "hair girl" or dying to color or tryout a new hairstyle pay a professional and use Citizen Salon. I believe the stylists here are contract workers so this review is a reflection of the stylist - Mary Elizabeth - only, rather than the salon as a whole. I just moved to Oceanside so I was in need of a new stylist to maintain my roots (I dye my light brown greying hair to a dark brown, pretty simple) and I also wanted to find a Davines salon to continue using the same products that I've been using for a long time. While pleasant enough to chat with, I did become a bit concerned when I noticed she was coloring my hair in quite thick sections, compared to what I have seen other stylists do over the many years I've been dying my hair. She was also using quite a bit less dye on each section as well. But.. I just assumed she knew better than I did (she mentioned her expertise a few times - despite talking as if she wasn't that interested in doing hair either, which was concerning), so tried not to focus on it. Because I generally leave the salon with wet hair, as I don't like blow drying, I didn't see until the next day that the color of my roots turned out at least one shade lighter than my hair, and there was plenty of grey that got missed. I paid the same price as I did for a premium salon in San Diego, so you can expect that I was pretty disappointed. I contacted her to let her know my disappointment and canceled my pre-booked appointment for the next session, and I never heard anything from her - not an apology, not an offer to fix things, nothing. I would recommend seeing someone who is more committed to their practice and as well to maintaining good customer relations... other stylists at the salon may be good, but skip this one read more

I saw a post here on Yelp as we were needing to find a new hair dresser for myself and my 12 year old and saw a post that mentioned how great she was with those who have thick hair. It dorsbt hurt when we find out she went to the same school my daughter currently goes to Mary was kind, patient, and a very wonderful listener to our needs. She did an absoutely amazing job with both my daughter and myself and bow cannot imagine going to anybody else! Both my daughter and I cannot wait to get our haircuts again! Had an awful experience here an my hair was butchered by Kelsey and the owners were no help. Lauren, one of the owners, convinced me that Kelsey was a good choice because she trained her herself. I went to my appointment with Kelsey and the reference photo was my own hair the last time I had it dyed 2 years ago with a brown on brown balayage. Kelsey saw the photo and informed me that it wasn't a balayage but highlights that I wanted (I never should have listened to her) . I made the mistake of trusting her. I made it clear though that I did not want my roots touched and wanted a fade in like a balayage with a low maintenance style. She went to the back and said we would pick the colors together from the swatch book. She then came out with mixed dye that the "girls in the back helped her pick." She was not open to my objections and went to work. She covered ALL my roots completely with something she said "would ease the transition." It turned out burgundy purple with my roots fully dyed. It was hideous. She immediately attempted to fix it with a re tone. It was worse. I left panicked since my job demands a "natural hair tone." I contacted Lauren but since all the stylists here are only "contractors" not employees she was no help. Lauren did admit it looked nothing like my reference photo and this was now a "difficult correction". I let her know I didn't want my money back all I wanted was to be seen for a correction by someone better than Kelsie and I would pay full price I just needed to be slipped in sooner rather than later since I moved out of state in 10 days. Lauren refused saying no one including her had the time and I was left with hideous hair to start my new job. Kelsey sent a refund for the approx $250 I spent. I ended up paying over $450 for the correction. I had it corrected at Textur one of the neighboring salons. It turned out wonderful and they spent a full 4 hours fixing it. When I came in and they started looking at my hair they called everyone over and said "look what Citizen did to her! It's a partial partial partial!" Apparently Kelsey only put one foil on the back of my head. Needless to say I absolutely regret going to Citizen. A total waste of time, money and stress. Kelsey is incredibly young and lacks the communication skills necessary to listen to clients wants and concerns; but I am more disappointed that the owners refused to help me be seen for a full price correction. read more

I have been seeing Kaitlyn for about a year and a half now (every 5 weeks) for highlights and cut. She is always professional and does an amazing job. It's hard to find someone who does blonde really well and she is really good. I came to her when my old stylist messed up my hair and tried to fix it and just made it worse. It was orange and gray from trying to tone correct and failing. Kaitlyn fixed it for me in time for my maternity shoot and I couldn't have been more grateful. She is really good at what she does and she's friendly. The salon is clean and modern and has great products. I'm grateful for Kaitlyn and citizen salon. But MOST importantly the blonde she did on me (Asian Blonde) is perfection. Blondes can be too warm, brassy, or just off on me, but this one was On Point. Couldn't be happier!!.
