Stumbled upon this charming winery. Friendly owner, "homey service". Wines aren't cheap but absolutely worth taking some home, the membership is a great deal. You can tell they have loyal members coming frequently to hang out and enjoy wine in a laid back, nonfancy setting.

Wines served recently seemed to be past their prime. All had a sour, acidic, short finish.

Learning more about Locatelli Winery during the Pleasant Valley Wine Trail Twilight Tasting made me appreciate Paso Robles even more. A family winery rooted in old-world tradition, generational storytelling, approachable hospitality, and a THIRTY YEAR anniversary party coming this September that already sounds dangerously fun? Honestly... Paso is doing life correctly. I especially loved learning about the Locatelli family history and Louie's connection to his Swiss great-grandfather Cesare, who helped inspire the family's winemaking legacy. And connecting with GM Raynette Gregory only reinforced the warmth and personality behind the winery itself. But what really stayed with me was learning more about the Pleasant Valley Wine Trail collective -- wineries genuinely supporting one another while also giving back through scholarship and agricultural education efforts benefiting the local community. THAT is what makes Paso different. The people here still feel connected instead of competitive, and the wineries still feel wonderfully authentic. Looking forward to seeing everyone again at the Under the Estrella Sky Charity Gala in August -- and hopefully raising a glass at Locatelli's 30-Year Anniversary celebration in September as well!

I explained I had been to a few other wineries on the San Miguel side and he said, you know, we're part of the Pleasant Valley Wine Trail (13 wineries on the San Miguel side). I didn't even know about that, but come to find out some of the wineries I previously visited were part of the trail. I was thankful to Pedro for this, as it helped me plan out the rest of that day on the trail. This particular trip to Paso was a few days before the Labor Day holiday weekend. I wanted to get away, but also wanted to be as safe as possible, by going at a time where I felt there would be fewer people. In the morning a few hours before my visit, Vicky called to confirm my appointment. I appreciated that and I'm sure she did too. Vino Vargas is on the far end of the trail, so it's a little bit of the beaten path, but so worth it. Because appointments are highly recommended during this time of COVID, I happened to be fortunate enough to be the only one at the winery at that time. It was such a great experience. I was able to have a great (socially distanced) conversation with Vicky. Learned so much about her and Pedro's wine-making journey, and the wines they make. I suspect it's not something that would happen with much regularity on any non-COVID style scenario where tasting rooms are typically full or busy. The wines were also delicious. I'm not much of a white wine drinker, so I passed on that option on the tasting menu and went straight for the reds. I wound up buying four bottles - 2017 Toro Tinto Tempranillo, 2016 Rio Ruso Pinot Noir, 2017 El Taxi Cabernet, and Paso Rosa Rosé Dessert Wine. I was very luck to have gotten one of the very last bottles of the Paso Rosa and I was thrilled, because it is absolutely delicious. If you can make Vino Vargas part of your Paso Robles adventure, I would highly recommend it. Pedro and Vicky are the nicest and so love what they do. Their wines speak so much about the care they take in making them.

We planned a trip to see his farm on the last day of our trip. I sadly can't drink right now, so what else is there to do outside of family activities and wineries? Olive oil farming! It was a great way to end our time on the central coast. Richard started by telling us about his story of becoming the Olive oil man. He helped us learn about Olive trees (we had brought a branch from our tree), the olives themselves, and the milling process. He brought us into his tasting room, and we tried various oils and a vinegar, as wells as a few flavor pairings. We really have a new appreciation for not only olives, Olive oils, and farming, but Richard and smaller, non-commercial farmers. Every bottle is a labor of love crafted by him, his wife, and even his dog. The visit felt like we had visited an uncle, and we did buy oils (he definitely doesn't ask you to, but after tasting then and knowing the process, you definitely want to.) We were going to send some as gifts, but it's hard to appreciate something as much unless you've experienced it. We experienced the San Miguel Olive Farm and we're better for it. Thanks again Richard! We definitely will try to come up one October to experience the harvesting to complete the journey.

It is owned and operated by Mr. Dennis Degher, a kind experienced gentleman who knows how to show his guests a nice time. Wine tasting is $30 per person, waived with the purchase of wine. Wine tasting is by appointment only. We made an 11 am appointment for a Thursday morning. There is an automatic gate at the bottom of the hill and you call to have it opened when you arrive. Mr. Degher greeted us when we arrived at the top of the hill. He has an indoor and outdoor tasting area. It was such a beautiful morning, we did our tasting on the patio outdoors. We tried several wines, including a Viognier, Chardonnay, a couple grenaches, a few cab blends, and a beautiful unfiltered port. All the wines we tried were very good. After tasting wine, Mr. Degher took us for stroll around his property. He gave us cuttings of rosemary, lavender, oregano, and bay leaf. We bought 4 bottles of wine, which waived our tasting fee. Mr. Degher is also an accomplished musician who has composed and performed many songs, which he has recorded and can be purchased on CD. Don't miss an opportunity to visit this beautiful little gem at the top of the hill!
