If my mom (who was neither Mexican nor good at cooking) attempted to make a Tex-Mex style dinner, this feels like what she would've come up with, using her trusty arsenal of store-brand white american cheese; off-brand Wonder bread; and the cheapest greying meat, from the cheapest grocery store, roused from its long slumber in a cling-wrapped styrofoam bed in the freezer. The tortillas did indeed taste like white bread, somehow. The cheese was an unidentifiable white cheese-like substance. The meat was completely flavorless and seemingly unseasoned, though, it did, at least, taste and look like it likely came from a recognizable member of the cattle family (rather than some other, less ideal, quadrupedal sources of red meat). The chips had the traditional shape and color of chips in a typical Tex-Mex restaurant. Despite the reassuring outward appearance, however, they were also oddly lacking in flavor, other than a strange movie popcorn-like aftertaste. The salsa unexpectedly seemed to have been fashioned from actual tomatoes, rather than the usual jarred mush found at most casual Tex-Mex restaurants. While normally this would be a good thing, here it meant that the salsa was being prepared in-house (or shipped in from the Chuy's warehouse of condiments). Though the salsa was acceptably mediocre, it benefitted from tasting a little better than other things on the table, which also helped me partially forgive its remarkable resemblance to gastric effluvium. read more

Stopped by Chuy's of a recent visit to the North Hills area. I was craving Tex Mex and thought it may just hit the spot. Parking can be a challenge. The parallel spots along midtown park are short term only, and I overheard staff mentioning parking enforcement does ticket if you go over. We ended up parking in the Harris Teeter garage and walking over, which was much easier. When you walk in you'll check in with the host and be seated. There are options to sit inside or outside. Given the weather and noise from kids playing in the park, we opted to sit inside at the bar. Service was inconsistent. When we sat down it took about 20 minutes for our server to greet us, and she only checked in a couple times during our meal. It seemed like the experience could vary quite a bit depending on who your server was. I ordered the queso compesto (Queso loaded up with seasoned ground beef, guacamole & pico de gallo and served with chips) which was cold but had good flavor. Next, I ordered the steak burrito with boom boom sauce and the green chili rice. The burrito was warm but the steak was extremely well done and had to cover the burrito in sauce to enjoy it. Overall, the experience missed the mark from a service and food quality stand point and I'm not sure if I'll be back. I may give the location in Cary a try before writing off Chuy's fully. read more

Came here for dinner with a friend and we both had a great time. We sat outside which was so nice- the patio is covered and they were playing great music. Our server was also very nice! Their chips and salsa are yummy- you get two dip options, both of which are very tasty. For my main I got the steak fajitas- yum! Perfectly cooked and really delicious. We both ordered chimichangas and it was delicious in a crispy roll with moist chunks of chicken smothered in a sauce with sides of refried beans and Spanish rice. The sour cream, lettuce, and tomatoes on the side was small and I should have asked for more. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. The decor was quirky, colorful, and fun with tire hubs on the ceiling and seating and tables in a 1950's theme. I loved it! There's street parking and also garaging with the first 2 hours free. Late Review, but Better Late Than Never We had dinner at Chuy's on Saturday, September 6th around 6 PM. The restaurant was noticeably louder than usual, likely due to a large number of families with small children dining at the same time--possibly after a nearby event geared toward kids. As a casual dining spot, I didn't have high expectations, but a few things still stood out. The noise level was excessive, and the floors were noticeably dirty, which took away from the experience. That said, we were seated right away, and the complimentary chips and salsa arrived quickly, which was a plus. We ordered Chuy's Chimichanga and Chicken Taquitos. The food was okay--not bad, but not particularly memorable. Being originally from California and having had plenty of authentic and flavorful Hispanic cuisine, I wasn't disappointed since I knew what to expect going in. Overall, Chuy's offers an acceptable dining experience if your expectations are modest. It's definitely not abuela's cooking, but for a casual meal (and especially for the chips and salsa), I might return--just not during peak family hours. read more

I visited here around 8pm on a Friday evening. I met up with a couple friends who arrived prior to me. When I got there, it wasn't busy and had several open seats. I was promptly greeted and allowed to go find me friends At the table, they had ordered a queso dip, which I ended up being the only one eating it lol. I regretted it later (lactose intolerance). Their cheese dip is yellow and I found white queso doesn't upset my stomach as much as yellow queso. Our waitress was friendly. I got a steak quesadilla and it was really delicious. I got full from the chips, so I only ate half of it and told the other half to go. The food came out in the right amount of time for the occasion. I did get two of their large margaritas with a $1 floater added. It was tasty and enjoyable. One friend got the cherry limeade alcoholic drink and they didn't like it as they said it tasted like medicine, lol. I liked how they have an option for you to pay online, which I did, twice. lol. I only got one drink but ended up getting another, along with one of my friends, after we paid the first time. The drinks are affordable, which is a plus! You can upgrade the liquor, which I did not because it's not that important to me (at any establishment), haha, as my mind will start to calculate cost of drink vs a cost of a bottle from ABC store, lol. I know I can't be the only one, lol. I've been here once before, but only got drinks. It was nice to try food this time. The atmosphere was nice, great for a casual meet up. They have a bar area and outside seating, which is great during warmer weather, which it was not during my visit lol. Parking close by is limited. You'll likely need to park in a lot about a block away, which isn't far. With so many businesses in the area, I'm sure it'll get packed on weekends and during warm weather. Went for dinner with our grandson, and it turned out to be a very good experience. He doesn't sit still long, so it was nice to be able to take him down to the market area in front of the restaurant's patio area, and let him play on the astro-turf. For dinner, he didn't eat very well, on his basic hamburger. But we both thought our meals were pretty good. My wife had the cheese quesadillas, and I had the creamy chicken enchilada, with a side of tortilla soup. The soup was really good, as was the enchilada. The enchilada had a little heat to it, which I enjoyed. Great place to take the kids for dinner or lunch, as it gives them something to look at. We're from Austin - where Chuy's originated so even though this location has never been as good as Austin we still like to stop in to get a (somewhat) taste of home. But every time we stop in our experience gets worse. I think we're done trying. This time our waitress was ok but definitely not friendly. Forgot to bring out waters and had to be reminded. Our bar drinks took FOREVER to arrive - and they weren't busy. So we ordered a second round when our food arrived - before we had even really tasted our first round. We finished our meals and were still waiting. When the waitress checked in we told her we were still waiting on our drinks. She went back to check k and told us they were never entered in. She returned about 10 minutes later to tell us "the bartender was now yelling at her" and we should "just cancel our drinks". So we did. And probably won't be going back. read more

It took some time for someone to initially come by our table, but once they did, service was great! Got chips and salsa and added guacamole which came fast! Please do not get your chuychunga without cilantro, as when they can out (my friend had gotten on too with cilantro), hers was the normal size and mine was half the normal size. When this was addressed, the server said that it was due to the original size is pre-made and when you customize it, they do it in a smaller size. I don't get it, but if you're going to give me half of what I ordered, at least lmk or don't charge me the full $15 price. My friend ended up wrapping hers up to take home, while I barely got a meal. I've been to chuys before in Nashville years ago and I remember a much more memorable experience. Highlights: Unlimited chips, salsa, and white sauce (apparently a sour cream base with jalapeño and cilantro mixed in with hidden valley ranch seasoning packet) - my wife loves this stuff Really nice location with the back patio overlooking some sort of square where events go down. It was a really cool atmosphere and the place was packed. Waitress and staff were very friendly and stopped to answer questions with patience despite the restaurant being packed Lowlights: The main entrees. I got a chicken quesadilla which granted is an appetizer but was so basic and flavorless. Also chicken inside was chewy! (No pun intended lol) Rubbery chicken is awful and made worse when every bite has chicken like that. I had the Chueylupa and it was fried perfectly but the chicken was a bit chewy which I don't think is why the restaurant is called Chuey's. Loved the refried beans. They weren't mush and were pintos. I had the "hot" green hatch Chile sauce on top and it was smokey and delicious but wasn't super hot. We also had an order of the Tex-Mex enchiladas and they were very good. Compared to dining-in quality and temperature of food (4 stars), your take-out service needs great improvement (2 stars). We wanted to try getting our food to go. We even went on-line to place our order, indicating that we would come inside and pick up the food at 7:00 pm. My husband got there on time, but still had to wait. However, we felt that the temperature of the food was less than even warm. So, we believed the food had been prepared WELL before 7 and just sat there in the bag (s). The quesadillas we ordered were supposed to be stuffed with cheese or sauce. Nope - very little of either. The tortilla shells were over-cooked. However, the added Fajita chicken was great (extra cost, no problem). My husband's Enchilada was also, not hot, and neither were the beans and rice. The best part of this take-out meal was the Queso and chips. Can't go wrong there. So, if you want food to go and you live near Raleigh, try San Jose's. If you want to dine in, you could give this place a try. We did several years ago and I found nothing wrong with the food, quality and temperature. Sorry, Chuy's! You missed the mark on this one . One extra star for the server who served our huge party of 12 adults and 6 kids that showed up with no reservation- she was so friendly and quick. I ordered the fried shrimp tacos and the combo fajitas, and I enjoyed them both! My friend ordered the grilled shrimp tacos and said it was a bit too salty, but the fried shrimp tacos were great! I liked the shrimp to veggie ratio in them, and the sauce helped the flavors come together. The steak and chicken in the fajitas were cooked well, and I LOVED the tortillas! I learned after the fact that they're made fresh when ordered, and I could definitely tell. I would order the fajitas next time too. The lettuce and guacamole that came with it were also very fresh. Appreciated the large interior with the extra outdoor seating too. If the weather was nicer we would have opted to sit outside which would have been perfect with our toddlers. This was our first time here. I grew up on the West Coast eating all types of Mexican food, but this wasn't a meal that I can recommend. The best thing I like about our food were the light and crispy chips that you get to accompany your order. The worst thing were the measley portions and the over abundance of salt in the salsa and ranch dip. In fact, my lips are still burning an hour later after eating. The Chicka Boom Boom Enchiladas was a disappointment. Enchiladas have always been a go-to favorite for me. I expected some type of shredded roasted chicken meat, not a tight chicken tender wrapped in a dry corn tortilla with a little sauce on top. Chuy's can be hit or miss for me. On this most recent visit, the food and service were both a miss. We sat on the patio which was nice since it was slammed inside. I started off with a grand ma's rockin' rita. I requested no salt but the rim had salt. The solution was to just pour it into another glass, that would not have solved the problem since some salt already got into the drink so I just drank it. For food we split the queso to start and for our main courses it was the chicka-chicka boom-boom for me and the custom enchiladas for my husband. You get to choose chicken, beef or cheese with a signature sauce for the custom, he chose beef topped with boom boom sauce. My meal was just okay, the filling compared to the thickness of the shell was not balanced at all. This place is an okay option in the North Hills area. read more

I've been here a couple of times and had a pretty poor experience the most recent visit. The prior visit was just average. The service is where my party ran into some issues this last visit. We were seated right around the quoted time when we put in our name (great!) and the hostesses were friendly. Our server wasn't that present throughout the meal, though. I try to extend some grace during this tough time for restaurant staff, but they should only seat as many tables as they have staff for. So it's hard to be OK with a server who isn't present. Worse than that was a situation with queso... a food runner brought queso to our table as we were waiting for our meals to come out. We ate a little bit, then the server came by and said, "Oh this was for another table." And picked it up. He then said, "You guys didn't touch it right?" Ummm I guess he was going to just give it to another person? Definitely not kosher with health codes (even if we hadn't eaten any), and especially questionable during a pandemic. We said, "Yeah," and he put it back on the table. He didn't end up charging us for the queso, which was nice (we would've be fine paying for it), but him trying to give it away still left a bad taste in my mouth. If I had received queso that was on a stranger's table, even if they said they didn't eat any, I would've been weirded out. The other issue was that two of my friends got shrimp tacos... and ALL the shrimp had tails on... and the tortillas were closed so one of my friends almost ate the tails before the other friend said something to her. They've gotten the dish before at Chuys and it's never been like that. So they had to rip off the tails by hand before eating the tacos. I got the ground beef burrito with ranchero sauce and it was good -- I had enough for leftovers. My boyfriend got ground beef tacos. Super annoying that on the menu it doesn't say how many tacos you get!! Everyone in our dinner group who ordered tacos got TWO tacos, not three as some Yelp pictures suggest. read more

I had used door dash so I parked there expecting in about ten minutes I would go inside and pick up my food. The food itself was good. It tasted fresh and I really enjoyed their burrito, definitely will have leftovers! Their queso was good but a tad spicy. I was blown away by how much they filled the bag up with chips! I didn't realize the meal came with chips but they filled the bag almost more than halfway which is rare from restaurants these days. Every time I go, I tell myself that I'll only eat half and take the rest home, but it's so good, I wind up finishing it. Sigh. Overall - recommended.
