We came here after a massive shopping trip and were quite hungry. It was that weird in between time of 3:30pm where we hadn't eaten anything for lunch and it was super early for dinner. After looking up stuff in the vicinity, we found this spot. First off, it's a nice space with plenty of other businesses surrounding the area. There is ample parking, and they have plenty of indoor and some outdoor seating. There is a separate bar area (it wasn't in use when we visited) but I wouldn't mind stopping in again to try out a drink or two. The menu was posted and they also had a section where you could order seafood to go (take home and cook). The special happy hour menu was posted for the day and is from 3-5pm Mon-Sat and included deals on oysters, tacos, ceviche, beer, wine, etc. We opted for the Chef Choice Hand Roll, Ceviche as a tostada, Crispy Fish Taco, Uptown HH Taco, and Po Boy along with a white wine. The service was pretty quick and the food quality was top notch. The ceviche was a nice personal sized portion, as well as the po boy. The tacos were what I would consider remained street tacos and I probably could've had at least 3 or 4 tacos alone if I just ate the tacos, since they were the perfect size. For the hand roll, it honestly looked like a work of art and was quite delicious, and came with a nice sauce (part Wasabi part soy, etc from the taste). Presentation was excellent and the service was pretty quick. I had no idea that they have multiple locations in Uptown Phoenix and Scottsdale, with ebolrsalr options in San Diego and cannot wait to try them out elsewhere in the future. PAPI CHULA This is the daddy of happy hour seafood. Chula has an amazing happy hour opportunity everyday of the week, with HH all day Sunday. That being said, my group ordered several entree's from the the happy hour selection for sharing in this happy hour tasting. KATSU SAMMY- was a Katsu Saddy. I am sad to say that this sammy was a sad let down. It was not a traditional Katsu pork, I believe it was tuna steak that was breaded and fried, so the outside was cooked with the inside raw. To me it was kind of bland. CALAMARI PO'BOY- Oh boy, the calamari was po'ly seasoned. Unfortunately, the seasoning lacked through out. It definitely needed some hot sauce or other condiment to give it a boost. The ingredients were nice and a good bread was used, but was kind of flat in flavor oerall. It just needed more spices to overpower the all the bread components. SNAPPER CRUDO- This was excellent. The sweet citrus sauce to go with the bits of mango and herbs on the delicate fish was such a bright and refreshing bite. This would stand up to any high rated sushi restaurant. This was by far the favorite bite. The inside is a nice big space where it is sectioned off with a bar area. You can watch a sports game or just hang with a group. The staff is very friendly, but the menu display did not do them any favors. It would be nice if the menus were more descriptive to take some of the load off the staff from sitting there explaining each menu item to the customers. This could help the wait time to order too. Some of their dishes were promising but were a bit underwhelming. The fact that they control their whole process of fishing all the way to distribution of the seafood to the restaurant is a plus. It really speaks to the quality and freshness. However some of the execution fell short in the restaurant, itself, and did not do the fish justice. read more

I have been to Chula before and I do like their fish entrees however their price point are only for those with Jansen Huang type of money so my piggy bank is usually saved up for when they have happy hour. I usually can't make it to their 3-5pm happy hour, but today, I made it to their all day Sunday happy hour! Yvonne, at the bar, was superb! She made me a great cocktail margarita and provided good service. The cocktail margarita was excellent and for $8, was truly a steal! I ordered their island poke and also their katsu burger special. Island poke was good, they use a salsa macha (which I love - TJs also has this and its great on vanilla ice cream - I had a taste at TJs and was like wow - I have to recreate this at home except can't digest certain lactose! I put salsa macha in my noodles). This dish also has watermelon radish (I love this veggie), grilled pina, and other veggies and the flavors were really popping with the tuna. At 4oz, this is more a starter honestly, and for $14, its worth it! The "katsu" burger was just OK. I actually thought this was a meat katsu, but I wasnt thinking fast enough to ask Yvonne which fish was being used for katsu, so when I saw pink when my burger was brought out, I was a little confused. Now, I think its probably seared tuna, but I guess I won't know, as the menu also didnt say. I am glad the jap jam and QP slaw was on the side because I cannot tolerate SPICY and it was spicy! Came in yesterday for the first time. Had a cod po'boy and some raw oysters. My wife had the Hawaiian poke bowl with spicy tuna. My cod po boy was excellent and well priced on happy hour. The oysters were also good but the mignonette was insanely vinegary. And I like vinegar but even a couple drops made it so overpowering. I ended up finishing the rest of my oysters with no "dressing". My wife's poke bowl tasted fantastic and was well balanced. I did feel it was rather expensive for what it was. Additionally, the last part of this review I feel is likely an outlier (hence why I'm still giving 3 stars), but I need to mention it. First time at Chula Seafood. I read that Chula was the best seafood restaurant in Arizona. We arrived at 5 PM on a Sunday for my wife's birthday. The restaurant was about 1/3 full, so we had our choice of tables. We ordered at the counter and then took a table at the window. My wife ordered a plate of grilled shrimp and a glass of wine while I got a 2pc fish and chips plus an iced tea. In all, it came to $56.03 plus tip. Our drinks arrived in ten minutes and our dinner arrived about 10 mins after. The grilled shrimp plate had seven sizable guys on it (with chimichurri) plus a bowl of dressed salad. My fish and chips had two small sized golden fillets, batter-dipped and crispy, atop some wonderful French fries, plus a small bowl of Cole slaw and a dill tartar sauce. For my meal, most everything was fine. The tartar sauce was VERY dill-forward, to the point where my wife, who loves dill, didn't even like it. The fries were actually the best part. Our dinner was fine, the service was fine, the price point was fine. The best seafood in Arizona? Definitely not. I've had much better at multiple restaurants, but at a much higher cost. read more

I had been wanting to come here for a long time, and was happy to finally make it in. I wanted to love it, but, sadly, I was very disappointed. The place is nice and enough--definitely not fancy. Hubby ordered the grilled salmon with a cup of clam chowder. I thought the chowder was fine, but he did not like it at all. It did have a taste that seemed like a cross between sweet and vinegary (like Tabasco, but not hot). He did, however, really like the salmon. So did I. It was perfectly cooked and quite delicious. I ordered the blackened white fish with sides of fries and a Caesar salad. The fries were fine - - just regular fries. The Caesar salad was pretty good - - The dressing was kind of unique and I really liked it. But my white fish was not only small, but somehow it was super dry and mushy at the same time. It was clearly way overcooked. I love fish and have never left fish on a plate, but I did leave this fish on my plate this time. It's a little pricey. The prices would be fantastic for a full service place, but not so much for a place where you have to order at the counter and go get your own extra napkins and hot sauce in little packets. We liked around 50% of our meal--my caesar salad and hubby's salmon were really delicious, but he did not like his clam chowder, and I really, really did not like my overcooked white fish. We both did really like the yummy dill sauce that came on the side, but i don't think we will give this place another try. read more

It's a moderately quiet place, pop in for lunch or dinner or catching up with friends. The staff was attentive and polite. I had the grilled salmon, shrimp skewers and oysters. The grilled salmon had so much flavor you didn't even need the sauce, the charred parts did give a bit of a bitter taste but i just took those parts out. We got Korean Poke with half spicy tuna and half spicy scallop, this dish was filling and the combined flavor of the gochujang sauce, refreshing cucumber, sweetness from carrots was perfect. What can I say that hasn't already been said? Chula Seafood at Uptown Plaza has been on our radar for some time. Chula is hands down our favorite local sea food restaurant in the Valley. It's not just the fact that everything tastes like it was just unloaded from their boat. It's the fact that the menu is so damn creative! My wife and I have enjoyed a variety of clam chowder offerings from other sea food restaurants. Chula's is the best! The difficulty here is that it's hard to remember to try something new. We've become a creature of habit and one of us inevitably orders the Hatch Chili Tuna Melt. Holy cow is this good! I branched out recently and tried the Tuna Burger. It was similarly excellent! So, stumbling upon @chula one day was the best surprise! Chula started in San Diego and eventually realized that other desert dwellers, like me, wanted fresh seafood too. Chula has three locations in AZ. I stumbled upon the Uptown locatio, but they are also in South Scottsdale and Grayhawk. This upcoming Saturday their south Scottsdale location, called Rosie, is celebrating 8 years. Stop by for two buck shuck oysters, prizes, and more. The other two locations will be doing the two buck shucks as well! Check out their website for the daily menu at each location. My sister enjoyed her poke bowl and I took the suggestion of trying the popular California burrito with shrimp. It was amazing!!! The freshness and flavor was mouthwatering. Not sure if it was overcooked or a little freezer burnt. The simple salad was a bit too oily and I didn't finish. Maybe a light ginger sesame dressing would be best. I was a little hesitant with the mention of seafood in a landlocked state. I am so glad we decided to try this place on our last day in phoenix. We were greeted right away as we approached the counter to order. We eyeballed the menu up and down for a minute before deciding we'd get the hot lobster roll, spam musubi and a cup of clam chowder. The roll was full of fresh and plentiful lobster seasoned to perfection with old bay. The roll was soft, crispy and buttery. It also came with a side of drawn butter to soak that lovely lobster in. The clam chowder was the same way, seasoned to perfection with wonderful chunks of clam. The consistency wasn't that of a normal chowder, but I think it's just personal preference. I like the thicker type chowders as this one was thin, but it did not take away from the flavor at all! And last but certainly not least was the soma musubi. You don't this very often in the states so when you see it, get it.. well don't if you don't like nori, rice and spam haha try it anyway actually. read more

Initially tried this place a little bit before and during the pandemic. They made online ordering and pick up easy during this time and even now. Finally getting around to doing a review and this is a good go to spot to getting some comforting seafood dishes including a California burrito, fish n chips and poke. Food tastes fresh, the staff is always friendly and a couple years ago they expanded and added a bar area which is already great to bring in people who just want a drink. The craft cocktails area alright but reasonably priced. Haven't had an item on the menu that hasn't been delicious, but the prices are a little high, which is understandable since seafood is more expensive. As someone with extensive experience in the service industry, I understand that people have bad days. But what I experienced was beyond that--rude, aggressive, and completely unnecessary. I stopped by on my day off (Thursday around 5:15 PM) and left feeling disrespected and unwelcome. I tipped well--$15 on a $70 order--and simply took a moment to decide whether to buy two pounds of scallops to go. Instead of providing basic hospitality, the employee aggressively told me to move because of a line, treating me like an inconvenience rather than a valued customer. Rather than diffusing the situation or offering even a basic level of courtesy, she continued stomping around and making me feel uncomfortable. A good approach would have been something like, 'I see you like the scallops--would you like to take some home?' Instead, I was badgered and rushed out the door. The result? I lost my appetite and left without making the additional purchase I was considering. If this is the new standard of service here--pushing paying customers away rather than treating them with respect--I won't be back. Luckily, there are better options: Mekong Palace for seafood, Nelson's for high-quality fish, and Buck & Rider for oysters that are both better and more affordable. A restaurant's success isn't just about food--it's about the experience. And today's experience was enough to turn a once-loyal customer away for good.
